Chapter 2 - Unexpected Encounter 2

[Warning! Hunger is below threshold]

[Starvation (Minor) debuff has been acquired]

[Fatigue (Minor) debuff has been acquired]

[Frozen (Minor) debuff has been acquired]

[Congratulations! 'Exhausted' state removed]

Feng Long woke up to find the various text obscuring his vision. The momentary fogginess of his mind soon dissipated and instead he was overwhelmed with the painful rumbling of his stomach. His limbs were stiff. His body almost frozen to the touch. The sky had already started to dim and even the sound of roaring in the distance was gone.

The only light was from campfire he'd 'established' before losing consciousness. Unable to stand up Feng Long began to drag himself towards the fire only to collapse near it. The fire had already started to go out. The bits of twigs and branches he'd started the fire with were mostly ash. He had no idea how long he'd been out for but he was thankful that the fire was still going. Even if it was a pitiful fire.

Every few minutes he would try to pick himself up from the ground only to find his body was still stiff and unwilling to cooperate. Feng Long was feeling resentful and bitter. The axe he'd almost died to acquire was amazing, it had cut through the tree like it was a piece of paper, but the 'Exhausted' state afterwards had terrified Feng Long.

He had no idea if the axe was the cause but he was hesitant to use it again. Especially when so much time had been wasted and he was no on the verge of dying because he'd taken a dirt nap in the snow.

Was he going to die from freezing to death? Surely, he wouldn't be the first Hero to die like this.

Right?

He could already hear that 'Shitty Goddess's' laughter when she found out he'd died of freezing, or starvation.

[Congratulations! 'Frozen(Minor)' debuff has been lost]

Feng Long had been laying by the fire for more than twenty minutes when the next text finally sprung into his field of vision.

"No way.."

Feng long muttered as he began to stretch his limbs, finding that they were cooperating with him once again. Gradually he lifted himself up, to his feet, peering down at the fire.

The reason his entire body had been stiff and he'd been forced to drag himself across the ground was all because of the 'Frozen(Minor)' debuff!?

"That's.. absurd."

If a 'Minor' debuff had taken so much out of him what would have happened if it had been worse? Feng Long didn't know what grades the debuffs had but, surely, if there was a 'Minor' there had to be a 'Major' debuff as well? What would that mean? Would he be a solid statue of ice unable to move or help himself?

The very thought caused him to go pale, his back instantly drenching with sweat as he remained the pain of his limbs being stiff and the fear of freezing to death.

"Too s-scary.."

It was practically a cheat. He had no way of resisting the minor debuff and the moment it fell on him, or anything worse, almost his entire body would stiffen up and no longer cooperate? Didn't that mean that the entire area was a death trap?

He wanted to curse the Goddess until he went blue in the face but there was just no time!

His face contorted as he felt a wave of hunger pangs. Feng Long got to his feet started to pace around, the light bit of movement only helping briefly alleviate pangs of hunger.

Then there was the fire. It was almost out. After experiencing just how terrifying the cold could be, especially if he was put in that wretched 'Frozen' state.. the fire was just as much of a priority to him.

Feng Long reluctantly tore himself away from the fire and made his way back towards the tree he'd cut through. The axe was still laying where he'd dropped it when he'd fallen unconscious but Feng Long was reticent about touching such a dangerous weapon.

He looked over the trunk of the tree, finding the razon thin cut that the entire tree seemed balanced on. He pushed both hands against the trunk of the tree and started to push. It held firmly, at first, but with every shove from Feng Long the tree creaked before finally giving way and tipping towards the side.

There was a crash of branches from all around as the large lumber came toppling down and broke the branches of opposing trees. Feng Long had a satisfied smile on his face as he began moving towards the felled top of the tree. He would have cut through the trunk and turned the tree into large pieces of log and timber.

But there was no way Feng Long was going to risk using the axe. Not until he was certain that there was no immediate danger and he could afford to go into the 'Exhausted' state.

So instead he just tore off branches and twigs from the felled tree. He made over a dozen piles of small wood that he could periodically feed to the fire. After feeding an entire pile of sticks to the dimming embers the fire was now large and inviting.

Feng Long decided to take a short rest by the flame, long enough to warm himself up, before he'd start making his way through the forest. He still needed to find something to eat if he wasn't going to starve.

Logically Feng Long knew that as long as he had water, he would have been able to last a few days without food. After experiencing the effects of 'Frozen(Minor)' Feng Long was afraid of having the 'Starvation(Minor)' debuff progress.

Already the hunger pangs were gradually increasing in intensity and even the simple act of breaking branches off the felled tree had left him tired and sore.

After another five minutes around the roaring fire a new set of words appeared in his vision.

[Warm (Minor) buff has been acquired]

Just as the text appeared in his vision Feng Long body felt a bit lighter. Much of the stiffness from the cold was gone. Even the cold breeze had little effect on him compared to when he'd first arrived in the snowy forest.

'Does this mean I can get a greater buff by building a larger fire?' He thought while mulling over the text that had started to fade from his vision.

Feng Long cast his gaze towards the piles of twigs and branches he'd created. An eager expression on his lips to test the theory.. which immediately dimmed as he started to mumble to himself.

"No point in being warm if I'm starving.."

Feng Long reluctantly looked out towards the forest before making his way over to one of the piles he created. He grabbed a rather small branch from the pile, wrapping some of the leaves around the thicker end, and made his way back to the fire.

He let the end of the branch like a make-shift torch and then started to make his way through the dim trees. After walking for some distance in one direction he glanced back, pleased to see that his fire created a decent source of light that would let him find his way back.

Though he had to be mindful about not going to far away from the fire and that he didn't end up losing track of where he was lest the light be obscured from his vision. He'd have to thick of some way to mark the trees so that it would be easier to find his way back.

He immediately thought of the axe, before dismissing the idea. The axe was sharp enough to fell an entire tree with little to no effort. If he accidently ended up cutting down another tree and had the misfortune of activating that exhausted state he would only be bringing about disaster.

He'd originally thought that the axe was his jackpot. It's sharpness had certainly been a surprise.. but not all surprises were good. In this case the axe was no better than a double-edged sword. It would make things easier for him but at a cost.

Feng Long simply wasn't willing to pay that cost right now.

After dismissing any thought of using the axe he started to wrack his brain trying to come up with a solution. He started to feel resentful that he hadn't watched more survival or wilderness shows in his previous life. The few things he did know didn't see to be all that helpful for the situation.

Things like where the sun rose, and set, were practically useless to him now. He had no idea if the sun rose or set in the same direction on Avalon as they did on Earth.

During the day he hadn't been able to see the sun through the thick layer of clouds!

He kept mulling over idea while treading through the forest. He came across a few small berry bushes which he checked out, and then eventually dismissed. He had no way of knowing if the berries were edible.

Feng Long wasn't going to shove them into his mouth to see if he could eat them. What if ended up poisoned? The very thought of another (Minor) debuff caused him to sweat.

The more he thought about his situation; the more dispirited he became.

'What kind of situation did the other Hero's end up in?'

The Goddess had only ever spoken about the very unlucky Hero's that arrived in the territory of the demons. She never mentioned anything about Hero's that ended up in uninhabitable terrain!

That alone was alone was enough to make him grumble to himself as he continued to walk along. Finally, he struck fortune. He caught sight of a rabbit nibbling on the berries that had fallen from a nearby bush. Rather than rush out to start harvesting the berries Feng Long kept himself hidden to watch the little white creature.

While hunched over behind a tree, watching the ball of fur nibble on berries, Feng long longs mouth involuntarily opened. A bit of dribble leaking out the corner of his lips while the rumbling in his stomach grew more intense.

He would have been fine carrying on without seeing food, even seeing the berries hadn't roused his hunger simply because the chance of poison had sobered his starvation. But now he could see real food in front of him. Something he could eat.

It wasn't just the berries that Feng Long had his eyes on. It was the lethargic rabbit that was pigging out on the berries. All he needed to do was capture it. Hit it. Anything. At least then he'd have something to eat.

Feng Long got out of that crouched position, carefully making his way behind the rabbit. The torch certainly made sneaking up difficult.. but Feng Long wasn't willing to set it down in case the snow put out the flame or it ended up catching the tree on fire. One would have been terrible for him. The other would scare away his prey!

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

After mentally preparing himself Feng Long lunged at the rabbit, striking down at it with the torch while taking on a heroic posture!

Only for the rabbit to easily jump out the way as the torch smacked into the ground and Feng Long ended up with a face covered in snow.

"Hehe.."

He pulled his head off the ground, wiping off the snow, to see the rabbit looking at him from a few feet away. That sound..

Did the rabbit just snicker at him!?

Looking at the rabbit now Feng Long could have sworn that he saw the creature gloating at his misfortune before it suddenly turned in place. He watched, dumbfounded, as that ordinary looking white rabbit became a blur of white that skidded away into the distance!

"W-What kind of ability is that!?" Feng Long screamed in frustration at the injustice.

This was a cheat! A scam! He was a powerful hero summoned by the Goddess of this world! How come a measly rabbit could escape him!? How could it be so far!? It was faster than a car from his original world!

What sort of scam ability was that!?

[Warm(minor) buff has been lost]

The words appeared while he was in the middle of lamenting his fate and cursing the Goddess for creating such a cheating rabbit.

"Ughhhh!" He could help but groan his frustration as he set his head back down in the snow.

Thirty minutes later Feng Long was sitting back at the fire. The 'torch' he'd brought with him had been tossed into the fire and slightly off to the side was a small pile of berries that he'd brought back. He'd considered grabbing berries from the other bushes on the way back but, despite how similar the berries looked, there were enough differences between the berries that had scared Feng Long from taking the risk.

The 'Frozen(Minor)' debuff hadn't returned on the way back so Feng Long had returned with little impediment. Without the 'Warm(Minor)' buff he'd certainly been slower but it was basically the same as when he originally arrived in the forest.

It did make him wonder exactly how long he'd been passed out due to the 'Exhausted' state. But Feng Long could roughly guess how long it had been when forest went from dark to dimly lit.

The sky was starting to dim when Feng Long had taken the axe to the tree and he'd woken up while it was still dark. He could guess he'd been passed out anywhere from six or seven hours. But that estimate only really worked if days were as long as Avalon as they were on Earth.

It would have been great if he could at least see the sun.

Feng Long grabbed another batch of berries from the pile and swallowed them whole. Not long after the familiar words crossed his vision.

[Hunger is now above threshold!]

[Congratulations! 'Starvation(Minor)' debuff has been lost]

[Congratulations! 'Fatigue(Minor)' debuff has been lost]

Feng Long let out a pleased groan.

Feng Long stood up and stretched. The loss of the debuffs was certainly gratifying. His body no longer felt as exhausted and the hunger pangs had finally passed. Since that handful had pushed his hunger above the so called 'threshold' he knew that he would need to continually eat. He took another small handful from the pile, idly chewing on the berries, as he glanced across the pile of twigs.

Feng Long had acquired the 'Warm(Minor)' buff about five minutes after sitting by the fire. He'd taken two piles of twigs and branches and tossed them into the fire pit to see if the increased heat would have any effect. Even after another twenty minutes the 'Warm(Minor)' buff didn't change in anyway.

He was disappointed but since he wasn't in as dire straight as he had been a few hours ago it was only minimal disappointment.

It wasn't long after the sun rose that the familiar sound of roaring could be heard in the distance. Feng Long glanced in the direction, clearly surprised.

'Those two are still going at it..'

Feng Long wasn't tempted to return to the battlefield. At least not when he could still hear the two dragons fighting. Now that he knew the two took a break during the night.. he resolved himself to return to the charred clearing during the night to see if he could find any other spoils amongst the corpses.

Thanks to his experience with the axe Feng Long was skeptical as to whether or not any boons the tools provided would come without risks.

Feng Long would at least need to make some preparations. Plus, since he was reluctant to use the axe, he needed some weapons in case he came across another rabbit or any other animal.

'Would be nice to run into another deer..'

Feng Long regretfully remembered the sight of scampering animals from where he originally landed. They had been quite some distance away from where he was now and Feng Long was reluctant to leave behind the fire and scarps of wood he currently had.

He took a few larger branches out of the piles of wood, the branches that had slightly sharper edges. They weren't exactly the most reliable of weapon, more like a flimsy spear, but they would at least be helpful. He doubted that even with the range of the spear he would have been able to kill anything like the white rabbit he saw earlier.

Just remembering that 'haughty' little creature got his blood boiling in annoyance. He was thankful no one had seen it otherwise he'd be spitting blood in shame for years over the experience.

While 'recanting' the strange creature Feng Long suddenly turned his head to an unfamiliar approaching sound.

Squish.

Plop.

Squish.

Plop.

It was a small round green creature with a pointed head. No bigger than a bowling ball. A green slime that was slowly jumping its way towards Feng Longs camp.

"Looks like the fire attracted it.." Feng Long had a slightly sour look on his face before he cracked a smile.

While he was worried the fire might attract something more dangerous in the future a single green slime wasn't anything for him to be worried about. If anything, such a small creature provided him with an opportunity to test out his spears!

Feng Long picked up one of the longer spears, holding it with both hands, as he approached the smiling bouncing creature.

"Sorry little guy, it's you or me!"

Feng Long thrust the spear forward. The pointed edge easily slimmed into the slime's amorphous body leaving him clearly pleased.

A direct hit!

He'd been worried the slime would scamper about like the rabbit making it difficult to him.

The green slime was still, for a few seconds, before the spear lodged in its body started to melt. Feng Long watched as the part of the spear buried in the slime just disappeared. As he drew back, away from the slime, and examined what was left of the edge it was a cleanly melted stump.

The green blob wasn't letting him get away though. No longer interested in the fire it began quickly jumping after him as Feng Long stumbled back. The green blob clearly hit him in the chest, dissolving parts of his shirt while striking him in the chest.

There wasn't any pain! It seemed like the slime wasn't able to do any damage to him!

Feng Long had his eyes closed when the creature first struck him. He had been bracing for pain. Now he was both pleased to find that other than a slightly melted shirt the slime hadn't done anything to him.

"Haha! Little guy, you're just a slime. Know your place! This Hero will take care of you."

The more confident Feng Long had a smile on his face as he taunted the creature, waiting for it to jump again before his fist slammed into the face of the slime and sent it back a couple of feet.

[You have taken 5 damage.]

The words appeared just as a light pain coursed through his hand.

'W-What!?

The slime that had just been 'blown' away was bouncing in place with wide open eyes and an open mouth. An incredulous look on it's face that mirrored the one on Feng Longs.

The slime had immediately expected death when the human hit it. It had seen humans hundreds of time before and they had eliminated its family with no effort. But this human had barely damaged it!

It was to be expected. This little slime and its family lived in one of the most dangerous forests in Avalon. The only humans that ever shown up were skilled adventurers and heroes who wouldn't even pay attention to the slimes unless they got in their way.

That was why the slime had only half-heartedly headbutted the human before. To express its frustration before it died.

For the first time in its life the slime had encountered a human that was weak!

The slime was ecstatic with joy. It would finally get revenge for it's fallen family! Encouraged by Feng Longs weak punch the slime charged at him again, striking him in the chest while he was still in a daze and sending him tumbling around in the snow.

Once the human went flying the slime started to jump up and down, celebrating its good luck!

Feng Long, however, was lying face-down in the snow for what seemed like the hundredth time since he'd arrived into Avalon.

[You have taken 15 damage.]

The words appeared in his vision just as he forced himself up to his feet. He started to curse in utter frustration. His entire body aching from the blow.

"W-What is this bullshit!? A fucking slime is stronger than me?"

Feng Long didn't even have a clue what 20 damage meant and he'd just taken it? What kind of crappy system was this!?

His face went pale, however, as that bouncing smile suddenly looked at him and began bouncing towards him again.

'Oh crap…'
