Chapter 20 - [Source of the Original's Death]

Chapter 20 - [Source of the Original's Death]

In the game, Wilhelm’s death is treated carelessly. It was only used for the purpose of giving the players a sense of how the game was going to be. However, some things can be known just from that alone and that is the place of death and the time Wilhelm died.

The place where he died is located in the Capital City of Count Axelane. The Crown Prince and the Count tragically died due to Thalion Cultist attacks. There was not even a trace of both of their corpses and it was not just them but also the entire capital city of Count Axelane. All the citizens there also died.

Later on, there was a small sub-quest that is honestly not quite important but Wilhelm, who is an addict who tried anything to get to the Epilogue, also did the sub-quest. It was the investigation of Count Axelane's territory and the ruined city and it is found there that there are traces of Thalion Cultist bases and traces of a great ritual.

This is why Wilhelm knew that the Thalion Cultists were planning something in Count Axelane but he is not sure whether the Count is in cahoots with them or not. This is why he asked Iris to investigate using her own information group and though he hadn’t received a full explanation yet, before this party, Iris clearly stated him as an enemy.

‘Which means this son of a bitch in front of me is probably a Thalion Cultist.’

“My goodness, Your Highness. You have gotten so big the last time I last saw you.” The Count said.

“Haha, you as well, Count.”

“Haha! This is my belly of happiness.” The Count said as he patted his plump belly, and drank a glass of wine.

“Burp.”

The Count burped making the nobles around him frown as they looked at him. The Count’s way of speaking and acting is getting on their nerves, even Wilhelm’s mouth twitched.

“Ahaha, sorry, sorry. It seems like I had too much to eat. Ah, right. Your Highness, is it correct that you will be going to the Eldoria Academy next year?”

“Yes, you’re correct.”

“If so, why don't you stop by my place? I have a ton of delicious food there. The food that made my belly go all round hahaha!”

The Count truly didn’t seem like a Thalion Cultist, he didn't even seem like a Count. He looked clueless and incompetent. Perhaps that’s why the Original Wilhelm trusted him. He thought the Count wouldn’t be of threat to him.

‘To think that is all calculated, how terrifying.’

Wilhelm got shivers down his spine. He really would’ve gotten killed if he didn’t know the game. But that is if he didn’t know.

“Sure, I will take you up on the offer.”

‘Though the thing you will be eating is an iron sword.’

“Hahahaha! Great, then I shall prepare the best feast for you. For now, let’s celebrate with a glass of wine!”

The Count went away, grabbed a bottle of wine, and went back to Wilhelm.

The other nobles behind him, looking for a chance to talk with Wilhelm, twitched their eyes as they glared at the Count.

Wilhelm just smiled and accepted the Count’s pouring of wine.

‘...What are the chances that this would be a poisonous wine?’

Wilhelm thought, and the chances are most likely pretty slim. There are too many eyes to poison him right now. If there is poison then it is slow-acting poison, which on the other hand would be a bit troublesome.

‘I would rather not have the cultists know that I have the [Anti Poison Physique]...Hm, actually, no. They might think that I consumed an antidote of some kind…Besides, why would they bother planning on killing me one year later if they are just going to poison me now?’

Wilhelm drank the glass of wine and chatted a bit with the Count before excusing himself. He was tired and needed some rest. The other nobles seemed disappointed but it was not his problem.

Once he was away from people’s sight. Wilhelm breathed out. Wilhelm was quite tense and on guard around the Count. It made him worried that the Count would notice it and think something was wrong.

‘...He didn’t notice anything right?’

At least it didn’t seem like so.

Iris who finished chatting with the noble ladies came up to him.

“Are you okay?”

“I was just talking to him so of course I'm okay. Though he gives me the creeps.”

“I agree. Honestly, his acting skills are quite noteworthy. If he were an actor, he might’ve gotten an award.” Iris frowned.

“Right, you had investigated him already. When are you planning on telling me what you found?”

“What about right now?”

“Now? Here?” Wilhelm looked around. Since the party was almost over there weren’t that many nobles left. The ones left are either the alcoholics currently drinking and eating their hearts out or the desperate that are trying to connect with everyone at the party. None of them are paying much attention to both Wilhelm and Iris, but it is still risky to talk about it here.

Iris shook her head.

“Not here, of course. What I mean is let’s sneak out and go somewhere private where we could talk about it.”

“Ah, I see.”

It wouldn’t be a problem if Wilhelm and Iris left right now, in the first place, most people had already left. But they needed to sneak out if they didn’t want to be caught in the horde of alcoholics and desperate nobles. However, there was a problem.

“I didn’t bring any invisible scrolls, heck, even if I did bring them they would be detected by the Magic Detector Artifacts and I’m not confident in sneaking out without any spells. I’m not an assassin.”

Wilhelm didn’t have anything special in his spatial storage ring, it only contained his sword and other useful miscellaneous items. Iris, however, grinned in response.

“Did you forget what I have?”

Soon after she said it, a pitch-black robe manifested from her spatial storage ring. As Wilhelm’s eyes widened at the sudden action, Iris grabbed his hands and made them grip the cloak and the cloak immediately turned him invisible.

‘Amazing.’

Wilhelm recognized this robe, it was the [Shadow King’s Cloak] that Iris wore in the past to follow him. It was one of the best stealth artifacts in the game and one of the Felles Family greatest treasures with a variety of powers.

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

Wilhelm smiled.

“To think that the magic detector tools of the Imperial Palace couldn’t detect that robe, how fascinating. That robe is better than I thought.”

“It is one of our family’s most prized artifacts after all. It not only conceals our body and mana to the fullest, but it also has its own sound-blocking magic. Stealthiness alone, it is second to none!”

“Any plans on selling it? I will even give you a tip if your customer service is great.”

“Sorry, but this one is not for sale. Perhaps you would like to take a look at our other items, customer?” Iris grinned, and Wilhelm laughed. Honestly, he was serious about buying it if Iris sold it to him.

“Now it would be easy to sneak out,” Iris said and they walked out of the Imperial Palace with ease. Most of the strong people who could somewhat sense them including the Emperor and Archduke Felles had already left, and even if they were here it would be hard to sense them clearly. The [Shadow King’s Cloak] is just that good.

“By the way, where should we go?” Iris asked.

“The Emerald Palace is close by so let’s talk there.”

“Oh my, inviting your Fiancee back to your home on the first day of engagement? What wicked thoughts are you having dear Wilhelm?”

“How rude, my thoughts are 100% pure, unlike a certain someone.”

“Who is that certain someone?”

“Look into the mirror and you will find her.”

Eventually, Wilhelm and Iris arrived at the Emerald Palace, Wilhelm’s home.

“Welcome home, Your Highness.”

Wilhelm could see Gaius there. He too was invited to the party as a squire, Abraham did it so that he could make some lower-ranked noble friends before he went to the academy. As well as to introduce him as Wilhelm’s squire. Wilhelm also agreed so that Gaius could get used to nobles.

“Hello Gaius, did you enjoy the party?”

“I managed to talk with some lower-ranked nobles around my age and made a few friends but...It was quite uncomfortable so I left early.”

Gaius scratched his cheek.

“Ahh, I see. You did well, attending such a grand party for your first time in the world of nobility and enduring it.”

There must’ve been a lot of discriminatory gazes from the nobles because he is a beastman. Though no one would try anything since he is the Crown Prince’s handpicked Knight.

“Thank you, but is it okay for you, Your Highness? People will insult you for having a beastman as a knight.”

“It’s fine. It doesn’t matter even if people try to lower my reputation using you.”

‘I mean, what the hell can they do?’

His influence has skyrocketed as the Chosen One of the Marriage Vow. His faction went from the weakest to the strongest because of the Felles Archduchy and the Archduke’s neutral allies also joined with Wilhelm. By this point, there is not much they could do to wrench the crown prince position, at least politically.

‘If I was dead, it would be different though.’

“You are worth more than the opinions of those nobles.”

“...Thank you, Your Highness.”

Wilhelm nodded and went inside the palace with Iris. They entered Wilhelm’s room and Wilhelm activated the sound-blocking barrier to ensure their conversation wouldn’t be heard outside.

‘...Wait, isn’t this bound for a misunderstanding?’

If someone is looking at this from the outside, they would’ve thought he and Iris are going for a steamy hot night.

‘...Well, I can take care of false rumors later. It’s not hard to prove purity.’

If he remembered right, there was a magic tool from the Holy Kingdom to prove purity so he wasn’t worried.

“Well, let’s start the discussion…What are you doing?”

“Exploring my fiance's bedroom.”

Iris was looking through gaps, opening drawers, and exploring everything and anything inside his room.

“Oh? This looks important.”

In Iris’ hands are a small vault the size of a box. It was where all of the information of [A Hero’s Tribulations] that Wilhelm knew was located. It is essentially a book of prophecy written in the Indonesian language.

“It is very important.”

‘I bought the safe for an extremely high price to get the best safe possible. No one knows the password, and even if it managed to get stolen it's fine since no one can read it. I also set it to explode when forcefully opened.’

Even if the book got destroyed, Wilhelm can just create a new one. The safe won't open normally unless it's Wilhelm’s mana so it's basically safe.

‘Though how did she find it so easily? I thought I hid it somewhere good and also used invisible magic. Is her senses just that good?’

“Stop messing around and come here.”

“Fine.”

Wilhelm had prepared a chair and a table inside his room. It was a very big room so even if he brought a chair and a table it didn’t feel cramped. Iris put the vault down and sat in front of Wilhelm with her legs crossed.

“So what did you find out about the Count.”

“I investigated him as you said and found that there were indeed buildings and traces of a magic ritual created with Thalion’s Powers.”

Iris said with disgust on her face.

“Your predictions were right. That city is basically Thalion’s playground.”

“Is the Count also involved?”

“He is, I told you before.”

“Do you have proof?”

Wilhelm believed in Iris but he needs proof for his plan of destroying the Thalion Cultists.

Iris nodded.

“Natasha, who is my servant, said that there was a hidden base underneath the middle of the city.”

“A hidden base?”

‘Is it the one below the statue?’

“She couldn’t get inside but she managed to see the Count opening a base hidden underneath the middle of the city right below the statue of the First Count Axelane, even if she is not a priest, she could sense a thick Thalion Energy coming from it. It's probably the core of the ritual you mentioned.”

As expected from Natasha, she is a top-class assassin and probably has the best stealth abilities in the game. She is the reason for the in-game Iris’s wide source of information.

“I guess that’s the evidence then?”

“Yes, it is.”

“Alright, that’s enough. Good job.”

Wilhelm leaned back on his chair and stretched his body.

“...You’re quite relaxed, for someone who is supposed to be targeted by the Thalion Cultists.” Iris said.

“I don’t have a reason to be nervous if I knew everything that they are doing.”

“You got a plan or anything?”

“I do.”

“What is it?”

“I will tell you later.”

Iris frowned but it couldn’t be helped, there were a lot of things he needed to prepare first so he would only tell Iris once it was all prepared.

“Oh, look at that view.” Wilhelm got up from his seat and walked to the windows. The sky is full of glittering stars lighting up the night.

“It’s just a regular nighttime. What’s so special about it?” Iris said.

“It’s quite special to me.”

It was because there were no such things as nighttime stars in Indonesia. He didn’t know whether it was because of pollution or something else.

Either way, now the chips are all assembled, and he had roughly less than a year to train, set up his plan, and aim for the best ending. As he thought about it, he looked at Iris who was already next to him at the window.

Despite saying that it was a normal nighttime, she seemed to be enjoying looking at the stars. Suddenly Wilhelm felt a bit melancholic.

‘Are the people back on earth doing fine?’

Moses had no close friends back on Earth but he still had some people he cared about.

‘There’s no hope for my business so it will become bankrupt but…I hope the rest of them are doing fine.’

“Hey.” Wilhelm said.

“What is it?”

“Please take care of me for the future.”

“Sure, you’re my fiance after all.”

Wilhelm and Iris enjoyed the night sky until it was time for sleep, of course in separate bedrooms.

And then roughly one year passed by after the engagement party.
