Chapter 2 - [Adaptation]

‘With that said, where should I even start?’

It was then that Wilhelm heard a knocking noise on the door.

“Come in,” Wilhelm said.

Since Wilhelm got the entire memory of Crown Prince Wilhelm, he could act like a prideful prince easily.

‘I would’ve preferred to act more polite but that might arouse unnecessary suspicions.’

Hendrick came in with a trolley full of breakfast. There were eggs benedict, fruits that he didn't recognize, perfectly toasted bread, sausages, and more.

Wilhelm's eyes widened at the feast before his eyes.

“Here is the breakfast, Your Highness, and this is the mirror you asked for.”

Hendrick handed Wilhelm a luxurious-looking hand mirror. Wilhelm grabbed it and put it on the bed. Right now, his mind was set on the breakfast in front of him.

Wilhelm grabbed the sausage with the forks provided and ate it. The juice flowed out from the sausage, it was well-seasoned and chewy. Wilhelm then ate the eggs benedict, the runny egg yolk coated the soft bread, creating a harmony of flavors.

‘I guess being a prince is not that bad.’

Hendrick smiled seeing Wilhelm enjoy his meal and bowed his head.

“I will wait on the outside so if you have finished please ring the bell to call for me.”

Wilhelm nodded and Hendrick left.

Wilhelm started to think about what to do right after he left.

‘The first thing is of course.’

“Status screen.”

An opaque blue screen appeared, showing the status of the body-not. Nothing appeared whatsoever. Wilhelm tilted his head.

“Status screen? Status window, wait fuck, attributes window!”

Wilhelm shouted every synonym of the status window that existed but nothing appeared whatsoever.

‘Fuck! I don’t even get a status screen!?’

Wilhelm dropped the fork and ran through his hair, tugging at it. In a way, it's quite obvious. If this is reality, there is no way a gamelike screen will appear, the problem is, he desperately needed that status screen.

‘How would I even proceed without a status screen?’

Not only did he get transmigrated as a character he knew nothing about, but he didn’t even get a status screen that can give him the data for the most effective growth.

Wilhelm let out a sigh and grabbed the hand mirror.

‘So I don’t even know what traits this dude has?’

Wilhelm thought as he looked at the hand mirror that reflected his current appearance. Soft golden-colored hair cascaded down, perhaps because he had just gotten out of bed his hair was somewhat messy but even that looked good on him. He had blue eyes reminiscent of the clear summer skies and a face that looked both handsome and beautiful. He would’ve been a supermodel back on earth with this kind of face.

Wilhelm felt a flicker of guilt. If he was here in the Original Wilhelm’s body then where would the Original Wilhelm be? Is he just erased or is he transmigrated back into Moses’s body? Wilhelm then let out a dry laugh.

‘What would worrying even do?’

Wilhelm also erased the lingering guilt he had. It was not his fault therefore he didn't need to feel responsible or have unnecessary guilt.

Wilhelm dropped the hand mirror back onto the bed, finished the breakfast given and rang the bell.

Hendrick came in with some servants to drag away the trolley. He then asked Wilhelm.

“What would you like to do next, Your Highness?”

The Original Wilhelm would do work right after breakfast and he would continue until night time. He would do that schedule every day without rest and fun, Moses thought the Original Wilhelm was quite crazy.

Of course, Moses had no intention of doing that.

“I will be taking a break this day.”

Hendrick’s eyes widened.

“...A break, Your Highness?”

“Yes, a break.”

As if hearing the word ‘break’ for the first time, Hendrick’s expression is like that of a newborn baby first learning how to speak.

“Uh, what about work?”

Wilhelm smiled.

“You guys can take care of it. Just leave the most important paperwork and signatures to me and do the rest.”

In a way, this is a boss dumping his work on his subordinate but Wilhelm didn’t care. Isn’t a boss supposed to be like this? With his servants working, the boss should be playing around. Of course, Wilhelm didn't plan on playing around. He just had other businesses that were more important.

‘I feel a bit bad for Hendrick but-hm?’

Unlike his expectations, Hendrick seemed a bit touched instead of annoyed.

‘Why?’

“Everyday, I worry about His Highness's health due to overworking, in fear that you might collapse, I considered forcing you to take a rest but to think that His Highness would be the one to say it first. Looks like my prayers have reached the Goddess.” Hendrick said in a emotional tone of voice. He then bowed his head.”I will ensure that every task is completed perfectly to avoid interrupting your break, so please rest as much as you can.”

Hendrick said with a slight smile and a tone of relief.

‘Looks like he cared for the Original Wilhelm quite a bit.’

“...Right, sure. Thank you for that.”

“Then, excuse me.”

Hendrick bowed and left, it seemed like he intended to work straight away.

Wilhelm scratched his head and then moved on.

Wilhelm would be taking a break for many days starting from now but he didn't plan on abandoning his work. Now that he had become the Crown Prince of the Heinberg Empire, his ‘position’ as the Crown Prince would become a powerful weapon. To keep that position, he had to work, but right now there are many things more important than work.

‘I first need to organize the knowledge inside my head, both the knowledge of the game and the knowledge of the Original Wilhelm.’

Wilhelm went towards the table with a quill on top and opened a drawer near it. There he found stacks of empty books. At first, the Original Wilhelm brought the books here for a diary, but since he didn't have time, he decided to abandon the plan for the diary and simply left the empty books here for no reason.

However, these books now have a purpose. Wilhelm grabbed the stacks of books, each of the book covers was made of leather, with high-quality animal skins as its paper. In this world, paper was already invented, but higher quality books still used animal skins that are a lot more durable than paper. After all ‘animals’ in this world differed from animals on earth.

Wilhelm opened the book and grabbed the quill placed above his desk. It seemed like they didn't have a pen here, but it's not a problem for him since a quill is similar to a pen.

What he needed to write was all the things he knew about [A Hero’s Tribulations]. Literally, everything he knew, from histories, items, exploits, battle strategies, timeline, and every other details must be written.

This shall be the Wikipedia for him. Later, he would buy the safest safe he could and lock the books there. Of course, he would also write them in a language that this world’s residents wouldn’t know.

‘I can write them in English, but, to be extra safe, I should write them in Indonesian.’

It would be a lot of writing, so Wilhelm asked the servants for more ink before beginning.

‘Now, shall I get to writing?’

Wilhelm wrote down the first sentence and felt a strange sensation. Even if he knew much about this world could he truly survive here? In this dangerous place when he had never even gotten into a fight before?

‘Maybe I should just run aw-’

Before Wilhelm finished the thought, he took a deep breath.

‘Never did running away solve my problems. This time is also the same.’

Wilhelm reminded himself of that and continued writing.

And so he did.

For 5 days straight.

He only stopped for meals in between writing sessions and, other than that, he spent all the time writing.

That’s why he could finish writing them all in just 5 days, despite it being a lot.

‘I will need to hide this somewhere.’

“Have you finished writing, Your Highness?”

Hendrick’s face looked haggard. He had to juggle his work as a butler and the Crown Prince’s work, so it's no wonder, but he never complained and it seemed like the work still got done regardless.

‘This guy is pretty high spec, isn't he? Is this common for the crown prince’s personal servant?’

“Yes.”

Wilhelm felt a bit sorry for Hendrick, the current working system was very inefficient and there were a lot of unnecessary work that can be easily delegated to other servants or just cut off entirely.

‘Is it because although its a magic world its still the medieval times? The working system is trash.’

Wilhelm had actually planned on fixing it right after his writing session however something else came up when he was organizing the original Wilhelm’s memories. Something great that he didn’t expect.

It was not the Goddess’s gift, while he was writing he also tried to find the so-called gift the goddess gave him however he didn't find anything in his room.

‘That damn goddess is a fraud!’

That was his conclusion.

“Then would you start resting from today?”

“I’m already resting though?”

Hendrick’s mouth twitched.

“Your Highness, I do not think anyone would consider writing for 5 days to be resting.”

“I consider it as rest though?”

Hendrick wanted to say something more but he just bowed his head.

“...Then what would you like to do for today?”

“I'm going to the training grounds.”

“The training grounds, I shall lead you there, Your Highness.”

“Sure.”

Wilhelm got up and began following Hendrick to the training grounds.

During the 5 days, Wilhelm confirmed that this is currently around 1 year before the Main Storyline started and before the time of his death. This is very fortunate for Wilhelm since it meant that during this time he could try to get as strong as possible and also gain allies before he went to the Eldoria Academy, and hopefully overcome his original death in the game’s prologue.

With that said, he thought the road to strength would be quite tough.

Wilhelm Von Heinberg was a character that appeared only in the prologue of the [A Hero’s Tribulations] and even in that prologue he didn't even appear directly. It was from a scene when the main character looked at the breaking news in the Eldoria Academy, that news was the only time he was ever mentioned.

[The Crown Prince Wilhelm Von Heinberg who resided in the Axelane County had died because of an attack by the Thalion Cultists.]

The news also described the city of the Axelane County where Wilhelm resided being completely destroyed, every living being there including Count Axelane.

Perhaps the game developer’s intention for the news was to give out a sense of theme about how the game is going to be as well as a hint for who the main villain of the world was. Either way, Wilhelm Von Heinberg was only used as a tool for the story of the game. That’s why Moses didn't know anything about Wilhelm.

Since he couldn’t even open the status window of Wilhelm he truly didn't know jack shit about his capabilities and traits. The only thing he could rely on was circumstantial evidence and the memories of the Original Wilhelm.

In terms of circumstantial evidence, Moses had judged Wilhelm to be mere fodder. It was because he died before the prologue even started. Usually, those kinds of characters are treated as throwaways with little to no capabilities. He was an extra that didn't even appear for a single minute in the game.

Not to mention, the other princes aside from Wilhelm were severely lacking in talent and had bad personalities to boot. Especially the Second Prince, Moses detested that guy. If his brothers are like that Moses couldn’t imagine Wilhelm being that different.

However, what he discovered from Wilhelm’s memories says otherwise. Not only was Wilhelm considered a genius swordsman different from his brothers ever since he was a child, but he also had a certain ‘trait’ that might just put him at the same level of talent as the Main Character.
