Chapter 1 - The Runaway Farmer

Chapter 1 - The Runaway Farmer

In a certain rural place where a small village could be located, crops grew everywhere while a couple of men are tending to them. The men who were tending the crops were sweating buckets, showing how severe the heat of the sun is. In one of the fields was a young man who looked angry and finally fell into the dirt with his butt.

“AHHH! I’m done with this! The weather is hot! This work is annoying! I hate this place, damn it!” The black haired boy shouted in a voice that ringed through the entire village. The men who were working, the children playing and the women walking stopped what they were doing and looked at the source of the shout. One of the middle aged men started to walk towards him and scratched his head.

“Oi Sig, what are you doing?” The man said while staring at Sigvorn who shouted loudly recently. Sigvorn looked at the man with an angry expression and replied.

“You f**king old man! Ever since mother died you’ve been forcing me to go your ways! I don’t want to be a farmer!”

“And what? Become an adventurer? Don’t make me laugh, a naïve, weak, young child travelling the world? What could you possibly accomplish? This work is for your future and you should forget about that little dream of yours and start tending the crops!” The surrounding men were laughing as Sigvorn’s father made a harsh remark. Sigvorn looked at his father with discord, slowly stood up and clicked his tongue.

“You, making fun of me. I’ll make you regret it someday!”

“Yeah, yeah, I’ll gladly wait for it.” Sigvorn ran towards his house as he saw the surrounding filled with people who looked at him with eyes of mockery.

That night, the village was peaceful as the dark sky reflected to the rivers showing a perfect crescent moon. A could be seen inside Sigvorn’s house.

“I have water, 50 gold coins, a dagger, and few pieces of bread. I think I’m all set.” Sigvorn muttered to himself while smiling. After he finished packing his bag with the things he required Sigvorn went outside the house and started to walk away, he looked back to the house and thought to himself.

‘I’ll make you regret everything you said.’

In the middle of the road, a young man with a sword in his waist, walking with a carefree expression appeared.

“Hmmm, if I remember correctly I should reach the town of Hazelbury if I continued walking this road. I should be able to reach the town at dawn.” While walking, he looked around at the peaceful scenery which was available to him. After a few minutes of walking he heard a few rustling sounds in the tall grasses surrounding him.

“Hmm? What’s that?” Sigvorn stopped to fill his curiosity and looked at the rustling grass. After a few seconds, his breathing stopped accompanied with a surprised expression, what he saw was a group of small monsters with green colored skin, holding a knife in their hands.

“Goblins!” Sigvorn instinctively said as he saw the goblins which amounted to 5. He immediately unsheathed his dagger and held the weapon as how an amateur would. Sigvorn charged with all his might and stabbed the goblin. One of the goblins shrieked in pain, Sigvorn seeing this smiled as he defeated the very first monster he encountered, yet he had forgotten about the other 4 goblins, which leaped at him with their knives ready. Sigvorn widened his eyes having no time to react, closed his eyes to brace their weapons.

But the awaited attack never happened, he slowly opened his eyes, expecting the goblins. But what he saw was not goblins but the back of three humanoid figures, two male and one female, confused, Sigvorn slowly opened his mouth.

“W-What… Who are you?” Seeing the back of the three made him realize he was saved from his doom, the day he departed and the day of his doom would have been the same day if those three didn’t come.

“Hmm? We are just adventurers. Good thing we managed to help you before you could have become one with those knives.” Sigvorn hearing they were adventurers, He could not help but become interested as he looked at the three with sparkling eyes. His hands were trembling in excitement as he saw a genuine adventurer in front of him.

“Adventurers!? Then, could you please take me to the Adventurer’s Guild in Hazelbury!?”

“Oooh, are you aiming to become an adventurer, boy?” One of the three asked, Sigvorn faced towards him and nodded. The man gave a heartwarming smile and fulfilled his wishes.

“Very well, come with us. We are just on our way to town after all.” Sigvorn smiled and gave his thanks to the three and started to walk towards the town of Hazelbury.

It was already morning when the four of them reached Hazelbury. The town itself looked lively, adventurers walking around, stalls could be seen at the sides and the people of the town were smiling joyfully. It was truly one of the peaceful towns in Esloria. The four of them reached the guild and sat at one of the tables and introduced themselves to one another.

“My name is Sigvorn Coldblade, nice to meet you!” The three of them returned the introduction. The man around his thirties first named himself.

“I am called Eustace Stargaze, an adventurer.” Sigvorn’s eyes sparkled once more as he said the word adventurer. Seeing this, the other young man introduced himself.

“Then I’m next, my name is Kristoph Amberheart. Nice to meet you.” He introduced himself in a knightly manner, Sigvorn piqued his interest but decided not to ask.

“T-T-Then, I am Eryviel. I am an adventurer from the Elf race.” Sigvorn showed a shocked expression when Eryviel introduced herself as someone from the Elf race. Sigvorn had never seen an Elf before and it was one of his dreams to meet one in his adventures. She unveiled her hood and showed her pointy ears at Sigvorn, looking down with her cheeks

being red. Noticing how embarrassed Eryviel was, Eustace stood up and stretched.

“Well, how about we register you as an adventurer now?” Sigvorn immediately stopped examining Eryviel and went to the guild receptionist

“Good day, How may I help you?” The receptionist asked while giving a charming smile, Sigvorn who saw this blushed.

“This guy right here wants to register as an Adventurer.” Eustace said while giving Sigvorn a glance, seeing this, Sigvorn stood forward.

“I’ll be in your care.” The woman observed Sigvorn for a little while then took out a plume and paper and smiled.

“Very well, then please write your name in this space provided.” Sigvorn began to write his name in the piece of paper, after finishing, Sigvorn handed the paper to the woman. The woman bowed and went into the back room, after a few minutes of waiting, the woman came back and handed Sigvorn some kind of card. Sigvorn then proceeded to ask the woman about the card.

“This is?” Seeing Sigvorn’s confusion, the woman gladly replied to his question.

“That is an Adventurer Identification card. With that you will be able to accept quests from the guild. The card shows information about your name, age, and your rank.”

Seeing this, Sigvorn could not help but be amaze by the card. It was proof that he was now an adventurer. After a few seconds, Eustace began to talk and brought Sigvorn back to reality.

“So what are you gonna do now?” Sigvorn stopped and thought for a while. Then Sigvorn breathed as if making is decision.

“I think I’ll be going around town for a while.”

“Is that so, well then, let us meet once again.” Then the three of them left the Adventurer’s Guild.

“Well, time to explore around.” Sigvorn went outside and immediately went to the shops around the town. He first visited the weapon shop to obtain a decent weapon. The weapon shop had a wide variety of weapons ranging from swords to quarterstaves. Sigvorn approached the man in behind the desk.

“Hey old man, could I get a decent weapon with a budget of 20 gold coins?” The old man noticing Sigvorn’s question replied in a stoic tone.

“My weapons at around 20 gold coins are mostly rusted and chipped. But I can get you a decent sword for 40 gold coins.” Sigvorn pondered for a while, he only had 50 gold coins so he needed to conserve. But without a decent weapon he couldn’t go out and fight monsters. After a few minutes of doubt, he decided to buy the said sword.

“Okay then, I’ll take it.” The old man hearing then went to get a sword from one of his displays.

It was a fairly normal long sword, a brown colored hilt and black scabbard. When unsheathed, the blade shone as it was made with iron. Sigvorne eyes widened in amazement and questioned the old man.

“Hey, this sword seems too good to be sold for only 40 gold coins.” The old man realizing what Sigvorn meant replied.

“Well yeah, but I can’t help it. People say it’s cursed. I can’t sell something that people won’t even bother, at a high price.” The old man sighed thinking Sigvorn will not continue his purchase, but his expectation was shattered when Sigvorn replied.

“Cursed or not, I’ll be the judge for that!” The old man was surprised at how he said those words with eyes full of strength. The old man sat down and smiled.

“Then it’s all yours.” Sigvorn gave the man exactly 40 gold coins. The old man then bowed as while muttering the word ‘thanks’. Sigvorn left the shop to go back to the guild.

“Ah, even though it’s a long sword, it doesn’t actually weigh much.” Saying this, Sigvorn was actually quite glad it was a weapon he could carry with his strength. While continuing his trip to the guild, he have been hearing voices ever since he got the sword. Sigvorn thought about what the old man said about the sword being cursed and went to confirm it by himself. He went to a dark alley In town and unsheathed his sword, only to discover the voice was coming from the sword itself.

“Ah! Finally I’ve been freed from that prison like place!” A childish voice was coming from the sword. Sigvorn tried to confirm the voice’s origins.

“Umm, you, the sword, is talking, right?”

“Isn’t that obvious? Idiot!” Sigvorn was surprised by the sword and its manner of speaking. Sigvorn continued his barrage of question.

“Huh…. How can a sword, like you, talk?” The sword went silent for a while, and with an angry voice, replied.

“I’m a magic sword obviously, you idiot!” Sigvorn stopped for a while, gathering his thoughts.

“Eh?”

Silence was filled in the dark alley. But that silence was immediately destroyed by a scream.

“EHHHHHHHH!?”
