Chapter 19
Lena sat in front of her master grooming herself again. As a non-corporeal manifestation of a skill created by the ‘Overseer’ she didn’t really need to groom herself, but she could see that her master found it cute.
She couldn’t remember her old name. She couldn’t remember what she looked like or any details from her previous life; the only thing she did remember was the fact that in her previous life: she was a teacher. She couldn’t tell you what she taught or why she became a teacher, the only thing she could tell is that she WAS a teacher and she didn’t even really remember it. Oh, and that she died. That makes the only two things she knows about her past life.
The first thing she remembered was waking up on a little island of glowing white stones in a sea of darkness. After she had discovered a pathway she began to follow it. After just 5 minutes of walking she encountered another little island, where she was confronted by a voice telling her that she died and won the ‘Martyr’ lottery. She was offered the chance to go to another world and for her gift she asked for two things, both of which, were granted.
The first thing she asked for was to forget everything from her past life. According to the Overseer that was the very first time that anybody had that request. It had to do with the concept of losing that sense of ‘identity’ to be terrifying, which was why lottery winners were automatically allowed to keep their memories.
Lena didn’t remember why she wanted to forget…that’s kinda the point, but she did remember the emotion she had during those moments: grief. Soul-crushing, heart-rending, agonizing grief. During her entire conversation with the Overseer she’d wanted to do nothing more than curl up into a ball on the ground, and fade. She may have already died, but she no longer wanted to exist.

The second thing she had asked for was to be a teacher again. She wanted to be a teacher for a student who would hang on her every word and for the knowledge she was sharing to be of the utmost importance to this eager student, even if she could no longer be human.
The Overseer had told her about another lottery winner, like herself. A boy who had died in a car accident at the age of 16 and had asked for knowledge instead of a flashy ability. He told her that she was in the perfect position to get her wish and the boy’s wish granted.
She had agreed without delay.
When Lena met her new master for the first time she couldn’t help, but think of the story the Overseer had told her, about this formerly crippled boy. He had found her ‘adorable’ and ‘cute.’ He had hung on her every word as the system that made and sustained her body fed her all the information and allowed her to compile it to explain it in her own words.
It hadn’t taken her long to start falling back into old habits that she never remembered picking up: like waving her hand in the air as she was explaining something. He had listened intently to every word she had spoken; she could almost see him committing every word to memory. She also noticed that he would often restrain himself from hugging or touching her during her little ‘human-esque’ actions.
The more she noticed that he found her ‘cute,’ the more she wanted to actually act cute; just to see her master’s reaction. She’d even picked up little habits that were completely unnecessary.
As Lena’s master was about to sprint by her again as he did another lap around the training field, she did a little sneeze from the dust he was kicking up. When he saw this happen he became so distracted that he tripped at full speed. Instead of hitting the ground directly he twisted and rolled on his side for a few feet. She quickly hopped up and ran over to him to check on him. He would be alright after his health regen checked in, but he would be sore until it finished.
Her master slowly sat up and reached out for her, and she willingly went into his arms as he hugged her.
“I’m not sure whether to thank you or curse you Lena. You're just too darn cute.”
“Thank you master!”
That’s right! Lena loved serving her new master, teaching him new things, and just talking to him. Plus she was glad to be of help to him, even if it was by accident.
