I don’t really even understand what happened, I didn't get the chance. I wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary. Simply driving home from work one afternoon. The same road, the same time that I’ve taken almost every day for the last 20 odd years. That’s when it happened. That’s when the sky opened to swallow me. All I knew before it went black was the freezing cold as I was thrown into deep space.

I tried to open my eyes, I was just so tired, I just wanted to rest. I just wanted to...

I was alive, I didn’t know how, I was sure I was dead. Maybe I’m in heaven? No this couldn’t be heaven, not this empty blackness. Maybe I’m in hell and I was destined to be here forever. Maybe the life of Sam Ward really was over.

I couldn’t hear anything, couldn’t feel anything. It was almost like I didn’t have a body. But that couldn’t be possible, could it?

I don’t know how long I stayed like that, unable to move, stuck alone with nothing to keep me company but my thoughts.

The darkness had long since become a comfortable constant in my life. It was slowly becoming all I knew. It truly was all consuming, at this point, I can’t even remember my name.

After what felt like an eternity, and truthfully might have been, I felt myself start to move, felt myself being pulled away from the inky blackness. Even as I drifted away, I felt a little bit of that darkness coming with me, it had become a part of me after all the time I'd spent in it.
