Chapter 3: The Hob Goblin General.

Chapter 3: The Hob Goblin General.

"Like I keep saying my magic is random! Party tricks! A hoax! A scam! I don't even know how to use it. No same magic works twice in a row!

"And I keep saying that's impossible! There's no way! I've been studying magic all my life! From one of the best magic caster in this country! What's your trick!?!"

It's been like this ever since they left the guild with their first D rank mission.

The task was to hunt some monsters and collect proof of their work.

Most people collected teeth, left ears, right thumbs of their targets.

Today's task was to hunt 20 goblins, wolves, orcs or any variety of demi-humans that threaten nearby villages and farms.

"Listen all known magic as we know is classified into 8 categories. Light, Dark, Fire, Water, Earth, Lightning, Wind, and Godly. With the exception of Godly I know the fundamentals of every type. So how were you able to cut part of the roof as slowly and cleanly as if a hot knife through butter?!"

"Geeze you're so annoying and talkative. I liked you better when you were pissy and quiet."

"It's impossible! Show me another one of your magic skills."

"Okay here. You see that apple tree?"

Albert pointed to a nearby tree with ripening apples.

"Mmhm."

Albert reached out and in his hand instantly an apple appeared.

"See?"

"Wha-How-Mi-Gyaa?"

Eve was squeezing her face at this. In all 16 years of her life. Never has she been this frustrated. It was taking all of her brain power to try to understand the mystery behind Albert's magic.

"Was that teleportation? Do it again! That's breaching into the godly realms. I refuse to accept this."

"It's not teleportation. It's perception manipulation. See that orange tree?"

Albert pointed to a different fruit tree.

"I can't use regular magic like you can. I can only cheat. And everyone can use my magic. Here I'll show you."

Albert put his arm around Eve's shoulder and held up her left hand.

"You see that orange tree? Open your hand straight. Hold out your arm. Bend your elbow. Now pretend as if you're gripping a sword's handle. Good."

"What's this. I feel something weird."

"That's the tree's trunk. Now hold it and shake forward and back."

As Eve has done so, following Albert's instructions the tree nearly 50 feet away started swaying madly, dropping countless oranges onto the ground.

"Eeeeeek!"

Eve shrieked as she jumped back. A spine tingling chill ran down her back. Cold sweat started to form on her forehead.

She looked at her hand. Opening and closing it. Looked back at the orange tree. Looked back at her hand. Repeated this about 6 times and still couldn't believe what just happened.

"See party tricks."

Albert casually said as he kept moving towards their destination.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN?! THIS IS CRAZY! GIVE ME AN EXPLANATION!"

"Gahh, please. I told you already I don't know. Can I just get some peace and quiet for this quest?"

As they trotted along Eve's non stop rapid fire endless questions kept the pair's journey lively.

"Eve can you be quiet? We're actually starting to enter a cave now."

Albert gestured towards the noisy Eve.

"There's no way. Wind magic can explain the force needed to shake the tree violently, but the guild assessment said Albert had no magic.

But that feeling of wood. Did he manipulate the winds perfectly to give a tactile feel of wood against human hands?

No but that would require the precision of a god. Maybe Albert was in cahoots with the guild receptionist all along.

This is all one big scam to trick me into believing Albert has no magic power. Yeah that's it. He has an unbelievable amount of magical reserves."

"Oi."

"Please teach me how you did that. Please, I'm dying to know."

"Like I said it's random. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't."

They were making progress through the cave but still making tons of noise.

In the darkness goblins who were lying in wait were sneering waiting to pounce on their unsuspecting prey.

"Listen the music changed."

"What music. Are you going crazy?"

"it's part of my magic."

"I can't hear any music."

From the nearby hidden opening in the ceiling the goblins dropped down with pikes aiming for Albert's and Eve's head.

"Ghwaaghh!"

The goblins shouted trying to strike fear into their new dinner.

"Like I for the 17th time. I don't know how I cast these magics. It's most like a skill at this point."

Albert casually said as he slashed the goblin in half from above.

"Did someone teach you this magic?"

Eve replied as she headshotted the 2 remaining falling goblins.

"No I was born with this curse. Ah, don't we need to collect their ears or something?"

Albert reached down to cut away the goblin's ears, and proceeded to put them into his little pouch.

"You don't even believe in the god, Elbi, and to be gifted this much talent."

Eve slotted in 3 more arrows and pierced the head, head, heart of 3 goblins lying in wait in the darkness.

It was pitch black but the two walked along as if it were complete daytime.

"I'll talk to you about my magic a bit more if you buy me dinner."

Albert said as he smirked.

"That's not fair!"

Just then the hob goblin boss stepped up.

Angry from being woken from his slumber. Disappointed in his minion's ability to stop the intruders he reached for his club.

The club was 2 meters in length, and he stood 3 meters tall. He has been through many battles. Both newbies and veteran adventurers.

The hob goblin wore full armor. Many adventurers fell victim to thinking they could trade blows. In the darkness it made it immensely difficult to fight for humans who were used to broad daylight.

But this cave was the hob goblin's home. He had no issues seeing in the dark. While lesser demi-humans would shout a frightening roar to throw their enemies into disarray, the Hobgoblin swung his club.

From his past experience a surprise attack was worth a thousand times more than foolishly declaring his presence.

He has seen this scene countless times. The goblin general grinned as his club was about to hit Albert's head.

"I'm not going to talk any more until you buy me dinner, and I'm eating. End of story."

Albert gave his final opinion on the matter as he swung his longsword.

The hobgoblin's arm fell to the ground along with his club.

"Fine. I'll buy you dinner. Can you please just explain what you meant about the music? Hello?"

Eve lifted her finger and shot out a lightning bolt that pierced the hobgoblin's heart. Through his armor, rib cage, heart, bone, flesh, and out the back plate of his armor.

The hobgoblin general fell in two attacks from this nonchalant pair of adventurers.

"Let's go to dinner right after this! Albert? Okay? Yes?"

Eve cast a stationary fireball on her fingertips to get a good look at Albert's face.

His lips were sealed.
