Chapter 2: Random???

Chapter 2: Random???

"Woah I've never seen so many people and buildings."

"For real? Where did you grow up?"

"In a church with just my adoptive mother."

"Eh sounds lonely, but peaceful. It can be really annoying and loud in the city here. There you see it? That's the adventurer's guild."

With horses and people walking up and down every road. Stalls with food, kids running, homeless sleeping in the corners.

Venne had sights and smells that were novel to Eve.

As Eve and Albert entered the guild hall there were adventurers of all shapes and sizes with a multitude of different weapons all before them.

Some looked towards the two of them, but quickly lost interest. Albert pointed to a lady behind a counter along the wall.

"Two new adventurers here to sign up."

"Of course. May I have your names, and party name please?"

"Albert and Eve. For our party name let's see....."

"We're not a party. 2 separate individual sign ups please."

As Eve butted in looking annoyed.

"Ah I'm sorry to have assumed. Well then, as newcomers I highly recommend you party with 2 to 4 people at least for your first couple adventurers.

The morality rate for first timers are very high, especially since you two seem to be so young."

"How long and how does one look for party members?"

"Usually people look for each other in the guild hall. Other than that there is a sign up sheet. But that usually takes a week or two to find a group from my memory."

Albert cupped his chin with his hand, and gave a sly grin while looking at Eve.

"Fine. I guess I'll party with this guy."

"Very well. May I get a party name please?"

"Party name? Hmm...."

"Sign us up as Elbi Messengers."

Albert looked over at Eve with a confused look.

"Very well. Thank you. Now please, right this way to assess your abilities."

As the lady hinted as to follow her Albert and Eve started making small talk.

"What's up with that name?"

"I told you I was on a religious mission as well right? This way it'll make my job easier."

We were soon brought out to the courtyard. There were previous signs of wear and tear on the field from repeated usage of adventurers' abilities.

"Usually we have the ability assessment done in private, but seeing as you two are a party would it be an issue?"

"Fine by me."

"Me too."

"Well then. We will begin the physical then magical examinations. If you do not possess one please say so then we will exempt you from that test.

"Lady Eve, if you will please show us your skills."

"Sure. I'm a ranger, and can use magic."

"Then if you will please hit one of the targets, after we will proceed to the magical evaluation."

The target dummies were wooden with a steel core holding them up.

Eve took out her longbow, and shot.

The shooting motion was too smooth and fast to be considered taking aim.

In one non stop motion she shot four arrows each under half a second, needless to say they all hit their target.

She then proceeded to swap the longbow onto the other hand and shot 12 arrows in the same fashion across all the targets in the courtyard.

"Wow marvelous! I have never seen such speed and technique. Now then for your magic test please touch this crystal ball. This will measure how much mana you have, what types you can use, and name your talents."

As Eve held her hand above the crystal jewel it started to change colors.

Then on the board it showed light, dark, fire, water, earth, lightning, wind.

The talents listed were marksmanship, rainbow mage, and God's messenger.

Feeling smug she looked over at Albert with a gleeful smile.

But Albert was picking up the arrows stuck on the target dummies without a care in the world.

Eve's smile quickly turned into a face of annoyance as she wanted to brag how skilled she was towards Albert.

"My my, what wonderful stats. You have the makings of a B tier adventurer."

"So am I a B tier adventurer then?"

"No, unfortunately not. Adventurers are Divided into F, D, C, B, A, S, God tier.

While you have the assessment skills of a B tier adventurer, I'm afraid the highest I can bestow upon you the rank of D, since you are new.

Strength is a big part of what makes up an adventurer, but trust, reliability, morals, ethics, and a lot more is what separates these ranks from the others."

"Oh, I see. Hey Albert! You're next!"

"Ah, coming!"

"Even though you never told me by the looks of it you're a swordsman?"

Eyeing Albert's longsword on his waist Eve guessed.

"Yup. I'm a magic swordsman!"

"Well then, sir Albert please demonstrate to us your abilities. You may use whatever you wish to showcase to me how highly I should evaluate you."

Albert lined up the target dummies in a row in a straight line facing us.

"Uh, should I showcase my swordsmanship first?"

"However you wish."

"Well the thing is I sometimes fight with pure swordsmanship, and sometimes as a magic swordsman. I have two different fighting types."

"Why don't you showcase both then?"

"Sure."

As Albert nodded he separated one of the target dummies, singling one out.

Then he took a deep breathe.

"Okay I'm done. with the swordsmanship part. Moving onto the magic swordsman demonstration."

"Huh?"

"Hah?"

Both Eve and the guild receptionist said with bewilderment on their faces.

"Like I said I performed my swordsmanship part so next is th-."

"Excuse me, but what exactly did you do?"

"Yeah! You didn't do anything."

"Well miss, I'm sorry I didn't get your name yet."

"It's Clara."

"Clara would you go over and nudge the singled out target dummy?"

As Clara walked over and nudged it the dummy collapsed. The wooden dummy with a metal core slid off as if it were being upheld by invisible hands.

Even the metal was cleanly cut. At least 20 different cuts made the wood and metal slide off of each other.

"Wha?"

Bewildered both Clara's and Eve's mouth opened in astonishment.

"Okay so for the magic swordsmanship par-."

"Wait! Was that not the magic swordsmanship already?"

"Huh? No. That was pure sword skill. I just took out my sword and whipped it back and forth really fast. Now if you will move back behind me to the safe spot. Miss Clara if you will hold this sword for me."

"Huh?"

Confused Clara looked puzzled, wondering why would the swordsman ask the guild receptionist to hold onto the very sword he was supposed to use.

"It's part of my magic. Now square your shoulders up. Good. Left foot forward. Raise the sword."

It looked like Albert was coaching a newbie on proper sword motions. As he was holding and guiding her shoulders from behind.

"Now look at the target dummies and swing from top right to bottom left. Good. Slowly bring down the sword. Good!"

In the event of this demonstration took a little over a minute. With the actual sword swing taking 15 seconds for one whole swing. It truly was like coaching one who never held a sword before.

But just then.

Every single target dummy had identical cuts from top right to bottom left across the middle, and the tops slid right off.

"Huh?"

"HAAAAHHH!!??"

Eve fell face first into the dirt as she got out of her chair.

"WHAT HAPPENED?!"

"My my, I've never seen such a thing."

"Y-y-you! What did you do?! It's got to be a trick. Yeah! You touched all those dummies while retrieving my arrows. Yeah! Hmm. That's probably what happened!"

Eve shouted so hard her throat began to hurt.

Albert just shrugged. and put his hands on Clara's shoulders again.

"Alright miss Clara once again. Do you see the symbol of Elbi on top of that church over there?"

Albert pointed to a nearby church with the religious symbol at the tip of it's roof.

"Now slowly raise the sword. across the roof. Ah you let the sword drop a bit too much. Ehhhhhh.... Just follow through slowly.

Drag it straight left! Not down. Ahhh!! Follow through! Eh... Good enough, I guess."

And at that very next moment we heard a loud crash as part of the roof structure of the church collapsed.

Shortly after screams from townsfolk could be heard, panic soon ensued.

Both Clara and Eve stood still for a good minute blinking.

"Well that's the magic swordsman demonstration."

As the two women looked at each other, it was a non verbal agreement that the two of them would keep quite on this matter.

"Ahem. Sir Albert then would you please place your hand on top of this crystal to evaluate your magic."

"Ah I don't think that's necessary. My magic is random."

"Excuse me?"

"Like I said it's random. Even I don't know how to exactly define it."

"Well guild procedures say you must or you cannot be an adventurer now that you have proclaimed some magic proficiency."

"Sigh. Should have never mentioned the magic swordsman bit."

As Albert walked over he placed his hands on the crystal ball.

The board showed that he had 0 mana.

The types of magic he could use was ???.

His talents were swordsmanship and ???.

"I-I've never seen these results before, aside from the given swordsmanship."

"I told you. My magic is random."

And with that team Elbi Messengers skipped F and were given the rank of D.
