Chapter 4 - Veil of Memories

In the aftermath of the creature's demise, Edén found himself surrounded by the remnants of the chaotic battle. Alchemical elements, fragments of the creature, and mystical artifacts were scattered across the ancient halls of the sanctum. The oppressive darkness had lifted, revealing the scars etched into the very walls of the sanctum.

Taking a moment to center his mind and feeling his body freed from the potion that had made him strong and brave, Edén now felt the resurgence of his fears. A realization dawned that the sun’s light had vanished, leaving only the small shimmering light from the artifacts spread on the ground and the moonlight filtering through the massive windows that adorned the walls.

With a quick look around and only the sound of the wind blowing through the halls, Edén stepped closer to the artifacts to inspect them. He noticed a small jar of light and picked it up, prompting his system to display information about it.

Essence of Life

This ethereal substance, contained within a small crystal vial, glows with vibrant, life-affirming energy. The Essence of Life is a manifestation of the life force that permeates the mystical realms. When channeled, it holds the power to mend wounds, restore vitality, and even amplify the life essence within living beings. Its properties make it a coveted and potent elixir for those traversing the unpredictable and perilous landscapes of the mystical realms.

Edén considered the myriad possibilities for its use but chose to store it in his inventory for the time being. Turning his attention to the other things around him, he saw a small pile of coins. They looked like gold, but the light could be deceiving. Picking one up and examining it closely, he noticed the image of a lion on the front. Indeed, the coin was made of something else — silver. Realizing it was the first form of currency he had encountered in this world, Edén pocketed it.

Looking back, he noticed many more items that resembled those he had gained from within Azalor’s realm, such as fairy dust and water bloom. He swiftly gathered them, and standing up again, Edén felt a sense of safety now that the monster was gone and its oppressive darkness had dissipated.

As Edén took another look into the sanctum, he spotted the altar he had visited before, now glowing with an ethereal light. Approaching it cautiously, he peered into the room and noticed that the altar had more text on it. It seemed like a diary.

Entry 21

"Forgive our faltering faith, oh sanctum of mysteries. The blood-stained rivers and withering crops paint a lament of abandonment. The heroes, bearers of divine strength, are gone, and our prayers echo in an empty void. Is this the test of our resolve, or have we been forsaken?"

Entry 34

Entry ????

"As the last whispers of our people fade into the silence, we offer this final plea. May the sanctum become a beacon once more, a guiding light for lost souls. And if the gods have abandoned us, may the new guardian who claims ownership bring forth a dawn that dispels the lingering shadows"

As Edén stood there, absorbing the echoes of a forgotten time within the sanctuary's ancient walls, a sudden whisper of wind brushed against his face. The sanctum seemed to respond to the entries, resonating with the tales of abandonment and loss. He felt a subtle shift in the air, as if the very essence of the sanctum acknowledged his presence.

The diary entries hinted at a once-prosperous city enveloping the sanctum, a haven built by wandering people who, at some point, had lost their way. The unnamed god, once a beacon of hope, had vanished, leaving behind a void that the heroes could no longer fill.

Driven by curiosity, Edén couldn't help but wonder why this sanctum remained intact while the city around it had crumbled into echoes. What forces had conspired to erase the prosperity described in the diary entries? The questions hung in the air, begging for answers that seemed just out of reach.

Motivated by an insatiable desire for understanding, Edén decided to delve deeper into the sanctum's mysteries. The altar, now more luminescent than before, beckoned him closer. As he approached, the inscriptions on its surface seemed to come alive, casting ethereal light on the surroundings.

Edén hesitated for a moment, recalling the quest that had been presented to him by the mystical interface within his mind. The Sanctum's Guardian, an invitation to claim ownership and unlock the dormant potential within. The diary entries had spoken of a guardian, and Edén felt a strange connection to the role.

Quest: Sanctum's Guardian

Objective: Claim ownership of the sanctum and guide it into a new age of gold.

With a resolute nod, Edén extended his hand and placed it on the pulsating surface of the altar. The surge of energy that followed was slight but with purpose, and the sanctum responded with a flash of visions, forced upon Edéns very being.

Images of the city in its golden years danced in his mind – bustling streets, towering spires, and the laughter of a thriving populace. The unnamed god bestowed blessings upon its people, and heroes undertook quests that shaped the destiny of the once-wandering people.

Yet, shadows crept into the city, casting doubt and fear among its denizens. The heroes, once revered, embarked on journeys from which they never returned. The god's voice, once a soothing melody, faded into an ominous silence. The city descended into madness, and the sanctum became a silent witness to the unraveling of dreams.

As the visions subsided, Edén found himself back in the sanctum. The altar's glow had intensified, and a new prompt appeared in his system.

Quest Updated: Sanctum's Revelation

Objective 1: Explore the memories embedded within the sanctum and gain its powers to claim true ownership of its halls.

Edén felt a renewed sense of purpose. The sanctum, a repository of memories and forgotten tales awaited its guardian. With each step, he could sense the threads of destiny weaving around him. The diary entries had painted a picture of a glorious past and with Edén’s help. He would make that past come true once again.

As he moved around in the sanctum, the air crackled with ancient energy. The remnants of the past whispered fragments of stories, and the walls themselves seemed to breathe with a life of their own. As he was once changed by Azalor’s magic, now the sanctum starts to change to him. Feeling his magic drain from him, the halls and walls change with it. The ones scared walls turn bright white with murals of a new history, of his fight with the dark monster that inhabited the walls before and his victory over it.

Even though Edén thinks the mural took it too far, for the fight did not look so glorious and he had to admit that he was not fearless from the start. The mural pictures him as some sort of god, a being that one would pray to and look up to. As the whole building starts to change, even the floors and furniture mold into new shapes. Edén even recognizes a lot of them; many are from his home, and he even sees what would only be described as a lab in a part of the sanctum.

Everything has changed, all but one door. Far in the back, stored away from onlookers' eyes. Once again, Edén, now the new guardian, embraced the role thrust upon him, determined to unravel the secrets that clung to the very essence of the Sanctum. Stretching out his hand to open the door, a bright light comes from the cracks… Blinding him...
