City life
As the sun began to set, Galen and Alexander approached the towering city walls. The imposing gates were guarded by two armored sentinels with focused gazes and long halberds. The guards only sprang into action when Galen's carriage drew near.
"Good evening, Galen," greeted the guard with a deep, friendly voice, "returning from another trip?"
"Hello, Haldor, Torrin!" Galen replied with a cheerful wave.
"Who's your friend?" Haldor asked, sizing up Alexander.
"This is Alexander Reyes," Galen introduced him, "he saved me from bandits in the woods. And sweet Alma here as well," he said, patting the lumin's neck.
"Then you have the city's gratitude, Alexander," Torrin said, "Galen is a respected member of our community, as well as a personal friend"
"It was nothing," Alexander replied modestly, "I saw someone in need and acted. Anyone would have done the same."
"I'm not so sure about that," Haldor said, his reassuring tone making Alexander feel at ease, "it takes more than the power to act. It's the instinct and drive to help that sets people apart."
"What about magic?" Alexander asked, "Doesn't that level the playing field?"
"If you can afford it," Torrin replied, a tinge of sadness in his voice, "Magic is expensive. But it can do wonders for those who can wield it."
"I wouldn't know," Alexander admitted with an awkward chuckle, "I come from a place where magic doesn't exist. At least, not that I know of. I'm still getting used to how everything works."
"That's hard to fathom," Torrin said, looking perplexed, "Magic is ubiquitous in Avendor."
"Do many people in your city use magic?" Alexander asked, changing the subject.
"Not many," Haldor said, "mostly artisans and craftsmen. But the city guard employs a few mages."
"That sounds great!" Alexander said, "I'd be happy to learn as much as I can!"
"Well then welcome to our humble city, Alexander," Torrin said with a smile. "And thanks again for bringing Galen back. Let's have a drink when you have time!"
After making their farewells, Alexander and Galen continued into the city. The streets were bustling with people finishing up their workday, while others were just beginning their evening. They saw many shops and businesses lining the streets, with vendors calling out to potential customers. Alexander was fascinated by the variety of goods being sold, ranging from food to clothing and even magical items.
As they made their way through the city, they gradually moved toward the wealthier part of town. The buildings became grander and the streets wider. Eventually, they reached Galen's shop, which was located in a prestigious part of town.
"This is my shop," Galen said proudly, gesturing towards the ornate building, with the sign reading "Galen's Gallant Goods."
"It's quite impressive," Alexander remarked, admiring the intricate stonework and gold accents. "And I like the name," he said with a chuckle.
Galen led Alexander inside, where he saw various pieces of gear, weapons, potions, and several herbs on display.
"Here we are," Galen said, gesturing towards the selection of goods. "Feel free to take a look around."
Alexander scanned the shelves, examining the various weapons and equipment. He noticed a spear that looked similar to the makeshift saber tooth spear that he had made. He picked it up and felt its weight, noticing that it felt good in his hand.
"This spear is nice," Alexander said, twirling it in his hand. "It feels familiar."
"That's a fine piece of equipment," Galen said, grinning. "I acquired it myself. I call it the Fang Spear."
"It's quite fitting," Alexander replied, admiring the craftsmanship. "How much does it cost?"
"Cost?!" Galen replied, almost looking offended. "You will not spend a copper here my friend. Take anything you need."
With a smile, Alexander held up the spear, his mind made up. "In that case, I think this will do nicely."

"Might I also recommend some armor?" Galen asked cheerfully.
"What'd you have in mind?" Alexander replied.
"With that spear," Galen continued, "you will want to stay mobile. So I recommend something light but durable. I have some fine leather armor over here if you want to take a look."
On the other wall was a rack filled with different types of armor. Most were leather, but Galen also had a few choices that were full plate. "Do those adventurers you mentioned come by here?" Alexander asked.
"They do!" Galen said with a smile. "Other than some of the guards and different travelers, they are my main clientele. You should look into becoming one yourself, after seeing what you can do."
"I'll have to think about it," Alexander said with a contemplative look. "It definitely seems like an interesting lifestyle."
"It absolutely is!" Galen replied. "I dreamt of becoming one myself in my youth, but alas life got in the way."
The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
"As it often does, Galen," Alexander said forlornly. "Now, which armor should I pick?"
"If you asked me, I think this would suit you best," Galen said, grabbing a set of leather armor from the rack. The armor was expertly crafted from supple leather, fitted to form snugly against the wearer's body. The leather had been dyed a rich, deep brown, and there were metal buckles at the front and sides to secure it in place. The armor also had small metal plates sewn onto it for added protection, particularly around the shoulders, elbows, and knees. The leather was soft to the touch but looked sturdy and durable. Overall, the armor appeared to strike a balance between flexibility and protection, making it ideal for someone who wanted to move quickly and quietly while still being well-protected in battle. "It is a great set to start with. As you grow and learn what you like you can exchange it with what fills your needs!"
"Galen..." Alexander said slowly and slightly in shock. "This is amazing. I can't just take this, though."
"Nonsense!" Galen said immediately. "I would be dead if it weren't for you. I will never hear another word about it. Now, you will also need some basic potions to start you off with. Here's a couple of mana, stamina, and health" he said, handing Alexander the small rounded glass bottles. "I will also get you a room at the inn just across the street as a token of gratitude. Take some time to look around the city and when you are ready, talk to Mrs. Loren at the inn and mention me."
Alexander was taken aback by Galen's generosity. "Thank you," he said, bowing his head in gratitude. "I will never forget your kindness."
"Anytime, my friend," Galen said with a warm smile.
As Alexander left the shop, he felt grateful for his chance to encounter Galen. After leaving the shop, Alexander stepped out into the busy street, taking a deep breath of the warm evening air. The smell of roasting meat mixed with the fragrant aroma of blooming flowers wafted through the air. The sound of music could be heard in the distance, and the chatter of people filled the streets.
Alexander walked down the street, admiring the colorful buildings and the hustle and bustle of the city. As he walked, he noticed a store with a sign reading "The Hunter's Haven." Curious, he made his way inside.
The store was filled with various animal parts, including hides, bones, and meat. There were shelves lined with jars containing different types of animal fat, herbs, and other ingredients. The aroma of the store was earthy and musky, with a hint of dried herbs and spices.
"Hello there," a burly man with a thick beard greeted him. "What can I do for you?"
"I was just passing by and noticed your store," Alexander said, looking around at the various animal parts. "What do you sell?"
"Everything that a hunter could want," the man replied with a smile. "We trade in animal loot. We buy and sell anything that hunters bring in, from hides to bones to meat and everything in between. These can be used for crafting or potions, armor, and weapons!"
"I see," Alexander said, looking around the store. "Do you have anything interesting?"
"We have all sorts of exotic and rare items," the man said, leading him to a shelf filled with different types of animal teeth, claws, and horns. "These are some of our more unusual items. They come from creatures found only in certain parts of Avendor."
Alexander examined the items, admiring the intricate designs and patterns on each one. "These are amazing," he said, picking up a particularly sharp-looking claw. "What kind of creature is this from?"
"That's from a Skarn," the man said. "A vicious creature with razor-sharp claws and a thick hide. They are difficult to hunt, but the rewards are worth it."
"I can imagine," Alexander said, wondering what kind of animal could produce a claw like that. "I'm Alexander, by the way."
"Rufus Walder, at your service!" Rufus said with a merchant's grin.
"Could I sell things I've looted to you, Rufus?" Alexander asked.
"Why of course sir," Rufus said, smelling a deal. "What do you have on you?"
Alexander reached his hand in his satchel and produced a handful of the scales he had plucked off of the small six-legged reptile he had eaten. "What do you think these are worth?" he asked.
"How in the world did you get those?!" Rufus asked dumbstruck.
"A small creature in the forest. Some kind of reptile." Alexander said, surprised at Rufus's reaction.
"The glowing serpentine hopper, aye," he said mindlessly as he stared at the scales, "but they're extremely rare and even harder to kill. Quick little buggers."
"Are its scales worth anything?" Alexander asked, himself smelling a deal coming.
"Oh aye..." Rufus said slowly, "they make a very potent experience potion. If you know the recipe, that is. I will offer you 3 gold for all the scales you have, assuming it was only one creature."
"Yes, only the one," Alexander replied. "I have no idea what 3 gold could buy me, and I am probably being ripped off," he thought to himself, "but I need at least some money."
"I'll take the 3 gold for it!" he said, laying down his handful and any other scales still in his bag on the table in front of him. "Now how about this," he asked Rufus as he set down a 7-inch curved tooth that came from the cat-like beast. "Wasn't easy to get," he said with a chuckle.
"I can imagine," Rufus said looking at the tooth with interest. "Felissian sabertooth from the look of it. Do you have the pair? They go for more as a set. Makes a nice pair of daggers."
"I do," Alexander replied, pulling out the long spear he fashioned with the second tooth. "Let me just remove it from the shaft." Untying the tooth, he handed them both to Rufus as he examined them closely.
"These are not as rare as the hopper's scales, but I can still give you one gold for the set," Rufus said reluctantly.
"I'll take it!" Alexander said with a smile. It was bittersweet for him to destroy the first weapon he had in this world, but just as on Earth, he needed money if he wanted to accomplish anything. "At least I have the new spear Galen gave me," he thought.
"That is great my friend! I will retrieve the gold now." Rufus said reaching under his counter. "Will you need anything else tonight sir?"
"I think I'm alright for now. I did just acquire the crafting skill, though. I think we'll be seeing each other a lot," Alexander said chuckling.
"Very well sir, you have a good night!" Rufus said with a friendly wave.
As Alexander walked out of the store, he was interrupted for the second time that day by the growling of his stomach. He scanned the street, trying to pinpoint the source of a mouth-watering aroma that had been teasing him all day. Just then, he felt something scurrying from inside his shirt and heard a small voice in his head yell, "Hungry!"
"Hey there, little buddy," Alexander said to the small mouse now perched on his shoulder. "Let's go find something to eat, shall we?"
As he made his way down the bustling street, Alexander took in the sights and sounds around him. The air was thick with the scent of roasting meat and spices, while the lively strains of music filled his ears. People bustled about, haggling with vendors and chatting with friends.
As the night grew darker, Alexander finally arrived at the inn Galen had recommended, clutching a plate of assorted meats and cheeses. Mrs. Loren greeted him warmly and showed him to his room. He settled in, feeling the weight of the day's events on his shoulders. After unloading his satchel and setting Aurum on the bed, he asked, "Do you want to change back, by the way? It can't be very fun being a mouse all the time."
"Very much," Aurum replied in his head, his child-like voice brimming with happiness.
"Okay, hold on, buddy," Alexander said with a laugh, watching as the small mouse jumped around with excitement. "Let me cover you up. We can't have everyone seeing the bright light." He covered the mouse with a blanket, but the bright glow still seeped through the sheet as Aurum's body expanded. When the light subsided, a happy dragonling poked his head out from under the covers, a playful look in his eyes.
Aurum stretched his body and wings, reminding Alexander of the dog he had grown up with on Earth. Suddenly, the dragonling rocketed off the bed, circling the room faster and faster with each passing second. Alexander couldn't help but laugh as he watched the happy little dragon, his mind subconsciously cementing the fact that he had to keep Aurum safe.
With a yawn, Alexander settled into the sheets, finally feeling comfortable for the first time that day. Aurum noticed him dozing off and made his way into the sheets, curling up under Alexander's arm. He made a purring sound, almost like a cat, and Alexander felt a calm feeling wash over him as if he was exactly where he was meant to be.
