Chap 2 Classes
Devon pulled up the class selection list and looked through the options.
Brawler (Common)
You have struggled before. Continue on this path, and pummel your enemies.
+4 Strength/Level, +1 Dexterity/Level, +3 Vitality/Level
He got a very thuggish feel from this class. Or... maybe a gladiator? It didn’t seem like it was for him, and he couldn’t remember any time he had really fought someone, but maybe everybody got offered this class and “struggling” was just metaphorical. It was interesting to see the stats, but he was sure there were better classes.
Tribal Warrior (Common)
You have come of age, and it is time to serve your people. Protect your tribe, and hunt the monsters that surround you.
+2 Strength/Level, +2 Dexterity/Level, +1 Vitality/Level, +1 Intelligence/Level
Again, a feeling of pride, and a protector. He was beginning to suspect this was coming from the system. The stat gains were even worse than Brawler, but he was sure there were other hidden benefits.
Lost Beginner Mage (Uncommon)
You have the makings of a Mage, but not the instruction. Exploration will be your teacher, and your spells will be your creations alone.
+2 Endurance/Level, +1 Cunning/Level, +2 Dexterity/Level, +1 Vitality/Level, +3 Intelligence/Level
Magic! This was enticing, and while he didn’t want to blindly choose magic, being a high fantasy wizard appealed to him at least a little bit. There was also the feeling – definitely system induced -- that he could be special, and mysteriously powerful, protecting the world from evil. The other feel from this class was amazement, and a drive to learn. It did seem like it meshed better than the other classes with him, but that wasn’t a high bar to clear.
Hmm... Devon paused, and mentally subtracted a point for this class. He knew he would never look good in a beard. Perhaps some sort of cosmetic skill would help? He still had no idea how skills worked, so that’s a definite maybe.
Anyways, he was starting to notice a pattern in the sentences. The first would be the requirements for the class, while the second described the path the class took. This was his frontrunner, certainly. It was worth keeping on looking though, especially as he glanced down and saw a lot more stat gains from the other classes.
Traitor (Humanity) (Rare)
You are surrounded by your natural enemies, and you have the aptitude to choose to fight; or take the darker path and offer yourself to them. Use your knowledge to hunt your own race, and ally with others to betray your race and wipe them out.
+1 Endurance/Level +4 Cunning/Level, +3 Strength/Level, +3 Dexterity/Level, +2 Vitality/Level, +4 Intelligence/Level
This... was probably not the path he was going to take. It also offered a warning for Devon, one that suddenly became a lot more present as he felt his own exposed position in the cave.
If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
He stilled his breathing, straining to hear whatever his “natural enemies” were. The cave answered back with the same silence that had only been broken by his arrival. He realized that he could do nothing at the moment except... pray?
He had been an atheist in his past life, not swayed by his more conservative relatives' constant evangelization, but maybe there were actual gods in this world. It wouldn’t hurt to curry some favor with ultrapowerful beings, so he sent a brief prayer to the god of not panicking. That was a thing, right?
He wasn’t a genocidal psychopath like the... feel that he got from the class, so he quickly dismissed the class. Surprisingly, once he affirmed his decision not to take the class it disappeared from the list. Interesting... he wondered if—Wait! There were enemies around, no time to experiment.
Arachnid Hunter (Rare)
You have made it into their lair, and that is an accomplishment to be rewarded. Hunt them, and kill their offspring.
+4 Endurance/Level, +4 Strength/Level, +6 Dexterity/Level, +3 Vitality/Level, +1 Intelligence/Level
Well, now he knew. He was surrounded by spiders. It could be large or small, but he was tending towards large just because of the game-like system he found himself with.
Giant spiders were common in fantasy and were always portrayed as creepy-crawlies, but he wasn’t particularly scared of them. They might move fast, but he always felt like as a bigger creature they weren’t a threat because of all the ways to kill them (crippling them, getting under them...).
Of course, literally a scratch could probably kill him if he didn’t see it, so his opinion didn’t particularly matter. The class was specialized which he technically didn’t like, but this was his life on the line. He couldn’t afford to minmax. Devon started moving a little faster through the list, aware of the danger.
Shadowed Stalker (Rare)
You have spent your entire life in darkness, surviving by staying hidden. Turn this into your greatest strength, and strike from the shadows.
+2 Endurance/Level, +1 Cunning/Level, +2 Strength/Level, +5 Dexterity/Level, +2 Vitality/Level, +4 Intelligence/Level
This one was interesting. “You have spent your entire life in darkness”. Did the system count his life as starting from when he was transported? When the system started up? When the feeling washed over him, though, he understood what it meant. His entire life he could have been something more, and this class gave him that opportunity. It wasn’t literal, but it did encapsulate who he was.
This was his second choice after Arachnid Hunter anyways, with high stat gains, and maybe the option to sneak out of the... cave? Probably a cave. He meshed pretty well with the feel the class gave him, too. Slowly gaining power and information solo, but this seemed too political for him.
That got him thinking. This was a new start, even in an extremely dangerous world. No job, no obligations at all, and nobody around. He wanted to decide his fate. However, his decision couldn’t be too influenced by wanting freedom in his new life. Though while he wanted a choice that felt more like him, he still needed to survive this.
World Traveler (Rare)
You come from another world, the magic that brought you here having had a great effect on your soul. Use this class as a stepping stone to something greater, and influence your next class by the actions you take.
+3 Endurance/Level, +3 Cunning/Level, +3 Strength/Level, +3 Dexterity/Level, +3 Vitality/Level, +3 Intelligence/Level
This class looked very appetizing. It was obviously there specifically as a starting point, but it might not immediately be helpful in terms of getting out of the cave. He knew what it would entail, but it might end up giving him a class like Tribal Warrior if he screwed up.
Though, World Traveler did have two more stat points compared to the other viable class. It was a relief to know that this wasn’t the only class choice he would have if he didn’t die, but that didn’t factor into his decision.
While he could choose World Traveler, he felt that Shadowed Stalker was definitely better to survive. It would probably let him escape the wilderness as well, maybe letting him live a quiet life wherever he was. But, fully confident in his decision, he focused on the menu and picked his class.
He immediately felt a little better and checking his status he saw that his stats had gone up. Standing up, he looked around. He was in a dark cave, but everything seemed a little bit lighter. He smiled and stretched. Looking back at the window, the addition of several new skills was another reassurance. He was going to get out of this cave.
