Chapter ⚔ 97

Chapter ⚔ 97

Ellie’s heart skipped a beat, her senses heightened by an unfamiliar warmth that surged up her spine. She felt a swirling energy enveloping her head, focusing on her ears. With a strange popping sensation and a flicker of warmth, the echoes of sound returned to the world around her.

"How the hell are you guys?" Karn's voice cut through the newfound clarity. Hope, the young girl trailed behind him, looking rather sheepishly around.

Still in awe of the miracle, Ellie gasped as her gaze locked with Charles. Words eluded her momentarily as she struggled to comprehend reality. "Uh, um," she stammered, her voice trembling with disbelief. "I can. I can..."

Charles froze, his eyes darting between Karn's book, Ellie, and Karn himself. Optimism tinged his voice as he asked, "Did it work?"

Karn's brow furrowed in confusion. "Did what work?"

A radiant smile lightened up Ellie's face as she nodded eagerly, tears of joy welling in her eyes. "It did. I... I can hear again," she declared, her voice filled with a mixture of wonder and gratitude. The weight of the world lifted off her shoulders as the realisation of her restored hearing sank in.

Hope's arms wrapped tightly around both Karn and Charles, a surge of strength and gratitude flowing through her. Karn's expression revealed his surprise at her newfound vigour.

"What on earth happened?" Karn inquired, concern etched on his face. "Are you alright?"

Her laughter filled the air. "I am now," she replied, a mixture of relief and joy resonating in her voice. Karn chuckled and offered a comforting pat on her back.

As they the three held each other, a few curious Kraven warriors approached, drawn by the commotion.

Meanwhile, Alec, now reduced to his tiny size, perched smugly on Charles' shoulder.

"Good to see you again, kiddo," Alec greeted him with a smile.

Returning the grin, Karn replied, "you too, mate."

Finally, they’d all come together, overcoming all the hardships and battles that marked their journey.

The ground beneath them groaned as the weight of the roots caused the stone foundations to strain. Karn's eyes widened as he caught sight of Scarf.

“What that?” he asked.

Ellie smiled as Scarf bounded towards them with a fluid grace looking like Ellie watery twin. With precise mimicry, the watery Elementelet waved at him, perfectly emulating Ellie's unique characteristics.

“Why does she look like you?” he asked.

Ellie frowned. “That I’m not quite sure of.”

A falling stone threatened to disrupt the moment, but the watery creature effortlessly caught it within its membrane and redirected it harmlessly to the side.

“Her name is Scarf,” Ellie swiftly introduced her, who bowed gracefully in acknowledgment. A silky voice echoed in Ellie's mind.

"What's this one called; I wonder?" the voice whispered.

Startled, Ellie turned to face the watery creature. "Did you just...?"

Scarf's watery visage displayed confusion. "Can you hear me?"

Ellie nodded, excitement lighting up her eyes. "I did!"

The three boys exchanged astonished glances.

Charles broke the silence with a question. "What's going on, babe?"

"I can hear her, can't you?" Ellie replied.

Karn shook his head. "No, we can't."

Alec mumbled briefly, then closed his eyes in concentration. "Say something, youngling."

Scarf moved forward and spoke softly, "Something."

Alec's eyes shot open, his gaze fixed on Hope. "You heard that?"

She nodded. "As clear as day."

Alec shook his head in disbelief. "I could only hear a whisper. Bah, I must be getting old."

Karn, perplexed by the exchange, interjected. "Hear what?"

Alec chuckled. "I think our little friend here has just gained something incredible."

"Gained what?" Ellie questioned.

"The book has healed your ears, but it seems it has also bestowed upon you the ability to sense Elementelet’s," Alec explained.

The group turned their attention to the rock creature, awaiting further explanation. Alec continued; his tone gravelly. "It's a power we are all born with, but not all of us excel at. Yet, you can hear Scarf as clearly as the best of us."

Ellie's brows furrowed, a hint of concern surfacing. "How’s that possible? Did the raw power of the book do this?"

Karn shook his head. "Um, about that..."

All eyes turned to him, anticipation hanging in the air.

"The book isn't just a mere object of power," he began, pausing briefly to gather his thoughts. "It is a gateway to an entire world, its own universe."

"What the fuck?" Charles blurted out in disbelief.

Karn smirked. "I know it sounds crazy, but I've been inside. Walked through its cities and climbed its mountains." He focused his intent gaze on Alec. "I even met BalDrakkus."

The stone creature gasped audibly, the significance of Karn's words sinking in.

"There are forces at play within this book that even BalDrakkus doesn't fully comprehend," Karn revealed. He glanced up at Ellie, his expression serious. "I believe someone or something other than the White Dragon is reaching out."

"How can you be so sure?" Alec asked.

Karn shrugged, a faint but resolute sense guiding his words. "I can feel it. It's subtle, but it's there."

A sharp clapping reverberated through the air, capturing everyone's attention. Their gazes turned towards the figure clad in a dark robe, striding into view. A visible unease swept over Karn as the Kraven warriors raised their bows, ready to lose their arrows.

"Nice work, young man," the figure's voice echoed hollowly, poison lining each word.

Sensing the intensity of the man's stare, Charles positioned himself in front of Karn, his body tensed. "What do you want?" Charles demanded.

A bark of laughter emanated from beneath the black hood as the figure continued, his robe shifting to reveal a bony, ancient arm pointing towards the still-growing tree.

"A gift this world has needed for a long time," he sneered. "Hope!" The word stung, feeling as though hope itself was reserved solely for him.

Confusion clouded their minds as they turned to look at the tree. Amidst the towering trunks, a tiny white gem shimmered, its significance lost on them.

The man swiftly produced a book from under the folds of his hood, its cover as black as the darkest nights. They instinctively took a step back, but the Kraven warriors acted swiftly, releasing a shower of black arrows towards the man.

They struck the man with a resounding thud.

Suddenly, the robe ripped free and fell to the ground, revealing the man to be nothing more than a clay statue.

As the figure, now skewered by the arrows, took a step forward, its form dissolved into lumps of clay. Karn flinched beside Ellie, a glimmer of recognition in his eyes as he murmured, "Beware the trickster."

Within moments, the clay mass crumbled away, leaving the book bouncing on the ground, skidding to a halt. Silence enveloped them, the Kraven warriors still poised with their bows at the ready.

Taking a tentative step forward, Karn gripped his book tightly, determination lighting up his face as he moved. He stretched out his book, its red cover contrasting against the darkness of the corrupted the clay puppets book. As they touched, ink spluttered and oozed from the black covers. With an unexpected surge of power, the corrupted book tore apart, dissolving under Karn's control.

The Kraven warriors watched in awe, their gazes now filled with reverence towards the wielder of the Book of the Known. Small twigs sprouted around the colosseum, signs of movement from the tree roots below.

"I think we better go," Karn stated.

They all agreed, swiftly making their way out of the massive structure, cautiously manoeuvring around corners, unsure if the battle had finished. Ellie listened with her renewed sense and couldn’t discern sounds of conflict.

Upon entering the streets, Ellie's eyes caught sight of the aftermath of the massacre. To their surprise, many soldiers had discarded their armour and weapons. The army had dispersed, some weeping in the streets over their actions, while others cradled lifeless bodies, their faces bearing the marks of the inhumane treatment they had endured.

The tall Kraven warrior, Valon, stood by their side, regarding Karn with reverence. "The forest is reclaiming this place. We must all leave before it reclaims us as well," Valon said.

True to his words small shoots were spreading through the streets, many quickly clinging and climbing the buildings around them.

Karn nodded, then turned his attention to the wandering warriors. "What about them?"

Valon eyed them with disgust. "They will become nothing more than soil for the roots."

Karn shook his head firmly. "That won't do. This was not their doing. Someone needs to help them."

Valon scrutinised Karn's eyes, a flicker of understanding passing between them. Surprisingly, the stubborn Kraven nodded. "I'll do what I can," he pledged.

Ellie stared at the two in confusion, perplexed by the Kraven's swift change of heart. All she knew was that it had something to do with the newfound respect in their gazes when they looked at Karn. The Kraven now looked at him like he was a long-lost saviour.

As Ellie scanned the battlefield, her eyes caught sight of a few new figures emerging through the streets. Clad in armour adorned with a distinct brown sash by their sides, they moved with purpose, offering aid to anyone they encountered. The weapons that once gripped tightly in their hands were now forgotten, their focus solely on providing assistance.

These men seemed to have a mission of compassion, their determination to help overshadowing any thoughts of further conflict. They moved swiftly, approaching wounded soldiers and civilians alike, offering support and comfort. With each encounter, their presence brought a glimmer of hope amidst the devastation.

Their presence added a new dimension to the battlefield, a stark contrast to the previous violence and destruction. It was a reminder that even in the darkest times, acts of kindness and selflessness could emerge, shining a light on the innate goodness within humanity.

In the distance, a group of gold-clad women huddled around one of their fallen comrades. As they approached, they noticed the severity of the woman's wounds, blood staining everything around her. Hope rushed ahead, shouting, "No!"

"Damn it," one of the Feldreken swore. "We're losing her."

"Ralina!" Karn called out, rushing to her side. The young woman’s face was smeared with blood, and a deep gash stained her neck.

Murmurs circulated through the crowd of Kraven as Ellie overheard discussions about how little time Ralina had left.

"Ralina, can you hear me? Hang on!" Karn pleaded as he knelt beside her.

With trembling hands, he placed the book firmly on her chest. "Come on!" he implored.

Ralina coughed, blood splattering the book's cover.

"Come on!" Karn repeated desperately.

Nothing happened.

Ellie's breath caught in her throat, her body trembling. The young girl had only moments left.

Karn screamed at the top of his lungs, the sound rippling through the crowd, morphing into a thunderous roar. They all stood frozen in silence, watching the scene unfold before them as a strange power filled the air.
