Chapter ⚔ 112

Chapter ⚔ 112

Karn's heart raced as the old man introduced himself. The Master of the University. He hadn't anticipated encountering such an influential figure so soon. He had to be careful; he wasn't sure if this worked to his advantage or disadvantage. He took a deep breath, reminding himself to remain calm.

"It's an honour to meet you, Master Theodoric," Karn said, bowing slightly then introduced himself in kind. "I apologize for my ignorance. My friends and I are..."

Theodoric gave a knowing smile. "I had my suspicions. No one born in Ren Daral would not recognize me or my status. But tell me, what brings outsiders like you to our land?"

Karn hesitated, debating internally how much information he should divulge. He chose a safer route, "We're in search of knowledge and understanding. My friends and I have been through a series of events that we can't explain. We thought the University might have answers."

Theodoric's interest piqued. "You seem different from the other potential students I've met. The page's reaction to your touch is evidence of that. But it's not just about the magic in you; there's an aura around you that I've never seen before."

Karn's apprehension grew, but he put on a poker face. "We've encountered things and beings that we didn't believe existed. It's been... a journey."

The Master leaned back, eyes still sharp but with a hint of amusement. "You're a curious one, young Karn. I would like to know more about this journey of yours. But first, let me offer you a place at the University. With your potential, you could become one of our finest event casters."

Karn blinked in surprise. "Just like that?"

Theodoric chuckled. "Your potential is undeniable. And while the test was a mere formality, you've impressed me. Besides, I have a feeling that we can learn as much from you as you can from us."

Karn pondered the offer. He didn't want to get entangled in commitments that would keep him away from his duty, but the University could provide the resources and knowledge they desperately needed.

Seeing Karn's hesitation, Theodoric added, "Consider this a mutually beneficial arrangement. You have access to our resources, and in return, you share your experiences and knowledge with us. Besides, with the magic returning, we need individuals like you who can help us navigate these uncharted territories."

Karn's thoughts raced. The offer was tempting, and he felt a strange sense of trust towards Theodoric. Perhaps joining the University was the best way forward.

"Alright," Karn agreed, "I'll join the University."

Theodoric grinned, "Excellent decision. Welcome to the University, Karn."

The Master's acceptance gave Karn hope that he was on the right path. As he settled into the vast expanse of Ren Daral's most prestigious institution, Karn was determined to uncover the mysteries surrounding the Book of the Known and, hopefully, the secrets of his own past.

In the dimly lit room, as the air held a mixture of old parchment and polished wood, the Master turned to Karn, his aged eyes narrowing slightly. "It seems the Lady Amber has graciously offered you and your companions’ accommodation."

Karn nodded, "Yes, she has been very generous.”

“This will make things easier. Our dormitories at the University are full enough as it is."

“She did say we could stay for as long as we like.”

The Master chuckled softly. "That's rather fortuitous, Karn. You see, while the University is a place of learning and growth, it's also home to youthful pranks and mischief. Some students, given the uniqueness of your group's entrance and abilities, might find it in their interests to... meddle."

Karn raised an eyebrow, absorbing the information. "It's that competitive here?"

The Master shrugged. "Let's just say, with magic in play, and the vibrant energies of young mages, it's quite an animated environment. However, staying off-campus with Lady Amber might just be your shield against unnecessary distractions. She is, as I often mention, one of the good ones."

Karn smiled, appreciative of the heads-up. "I'm glad we have her in our corner then."

"Indeed," the Master continued, his tone taking on a hint of excitement. "You should prepare, Karn. Enrolment begins at the start of next week. You'll be among a hundred eager students, each with their own tales and talents. It promises to be quite the experience."

Karn's heart quickened at the thought. New beginnings, a hundred peers, and the mysteries of magic waiting to unfold.

Karn took a moment to let the master’s words sink in.

After a time, Karn stepped out of the dimly lit room, leaving Master Theodoric behind as Ralina took her turn to face the old scholar. The faint hum of whispers from his companions reached him. Taking a seat on a nearby seat, he caught his breath and looked at around at the others.

Hope and Ellie were deep in whispered conversation. Hope’s anxious face lit up when she saw Karn, her green eyes searching his for clues. Ellie, on the other hand, seemed more composed, but her gaze bore the weight of expectation.

"Well?" Hope began, but Karn held up a hand, signalling her to wait.

“What is it?” asked Ellie. Her vibrant red hair now woven into a tight braid, she tossed it over her shoulder. As the fiery strands caught the light, they seemed to glow even brighter. She looked at Karn with a raised eyebrow, her gaze filled with curiosity. "Something wrong?" she asked.

He cleared his throat, "I've been offered a place at the University. The Master believes that with my potential, I can be trained to harness the returning magic. He also believes that our experiences and the knowledge is valuable."

Ellie’s eyebrows shot up in surprise, "Just like that? They're letting you in?"

Karn nodded. "It seems they're as curious about us as we are about them. The Master spoke of a mutually beneficial relationship. But more importantly," Karn lowered his voice as he spoke to Ellie, "he doesn’t know we're not from here. Planetary speaking."

Ellie inhaled sharply, "What did you tell him?"

Karn shook his head reassuringly, "Nothing that would compromise us. But he's shrewd. I think he suspects more than he lets on."

From the corner of his eye, Karn noticed Lady Amber, a vision of grace with a goblet cradled in her hand, warmly observing their interaction. The gentle rustle of her elegant gown could be heard as she stepped closer. There was always a comforting familiarity about Lady Amber, and now her caring presence seemed to reassure them.

Ellie followed Karn's gaze, her expression softening. "She genuinely wants to help, doesn't she?"

Karn nodded, touched by Lady Amber's dedication. "She has been nothing but kind to us. We owe her a lot."

Hope added, "Sound like she's always been there for her city. With the food shortages they've been facing, she sees magic as a beacon of hope for them all."

Ellie smiled gently, "If magic can indeed bring prosperity, it would not only uplift her but the entire city."

A soft voice called out, redirecting their attention. Ralina emerged from the room, her face a mix of wonder and contemplation. She joined the group, sliding into a seat next to Karn.

Their collective gaze turned to Ralina, eager for her account.

As they waited, Lady Amber approached with genuine concern in her eyes. "So,, what insights did the Master share?"

Karn spoke up, "We chatted about the return of magic, the event books, and the profound changes the world is undergoing."

Lady Amber's eyes sparkled with hope. "The resurgence of magic might be the key to revitalising our lands and our people to its former glory. It's time for a new dawn."

Ralina, her voice tinged with excitement, shared, "He extended an invitation for me to join the University. He feels my connection with ancient spirits holds promise."

Exchanging hopeful glances, the group realized they were on the cusp of a new chapter, right at the heart of the University.

As evening draped the manor in shadow, Karn grew more comfortable with the nightly rituals. The sun dipped behind the imposing walls of the sector, ushering in a crisp coolness. The grand dining hall now bathed in the warm amber light of hanging lanterns. A long mahogany table stood at the centre, adorned with exquisite plates, gleaming silverware, and sparkling crystal glasses while the enticing scent of roasted meats and freshly baked bread wafted through the air.

Karn found himself seated between Hope and Ellie. Across from him sat Charles, his face a mix of envy and mischief, as he playfully stuck his tongue out at Ellie, who rolled her eyes in return but held his hand under the table. To Karn's right, Maze took slow sips from his goblet, his eyes filled with a distant look, clearly lost in memory.

Lady Amber, seated at the head of the table with her husband, the General, on her right, looked at Karn and the girls. "We've heard of the exciting opportunity that awaits you three at the University. It truly is an honour," she said warmly, casting a glance at her daughter and newly adopted son, Cody, both of whom sat wide-eyed, taking in the stories of the adults.

Charles huffed, "Yeah, yeah, some of us weren't that lucky." He looked at Ellie, "But at least I have the best consolation prize," he winked, earning a playful shove from her.

Ellie smiled. "The University isn't everything, Charles. You have other skills. Besides, someone needs to stay behind and ensure we have a home to come back to."

Hope ran a hand through her dark brown hair. "Charles, remember that our paths are different. Each with its own challenges and rewards."

“You sound just like Farlen.” Maze chuckled as he gave Charles a conspirator’s glance, "I've been around for too long to join such institutions now. But I must say, youth and magic combined can be quite the combination." He raised his goblet in a toast, "To new beginnings!"
