Chapter 2

As the door to the Riverhaven Inn creaked open, a comforting wave of warmth and light washed over Marcus and Zara. Stepping inside, they were met by the soft glow of lanterns casting flickering shadows across rustic wooden beams. The heavy scent of spiced ale and roasting meats mingled in the air, but despite the inviting atmosphere, a palpable tension lingered among the patrons.

They weaved their way through the crowded room, where low murmuring filled the space. At the far end, a stout innkeeper engaged in a heated exchange with a stern and battle-scarred man. The man's gray eyes, as piercing as his gravelly voice, commanded attention—this was Captain Aldric.

"There's no telling when it'll strike again," Aldric growled, his tone rough and bitter. His presence was as imposing as his weathered armor, and he spoke with the authority of someone who had seen far too many battles.

Excited by the promise of something interesting, Marcus nudged Zara with his elbow. "Looks like we've found the town tough guy. Think he makes house calls?" he whispered with a grin.

Zara rolled her eyes, but couldn't suppress a small smile. "Maybe we should find out."

Approaching confidently, Marcus cleared his throat. "Excuse me, Captain Aldric," he asked, adopting a casual tone that was at odds with the gravity of the situation.

Aldric swung his gaze toward them, narrowing his eyes with a mix of suspicion and curiosity. His hand instinctively rested on the hilt of his sword.

"We're Zara and Marcus. We're... the defenders you met before," Zara said, choosing her words carefully.

Aldric's gaze hardened, scrutinizing them as if weighing their souls. "New to town, and you show up just as the Beast attacks again? Highly convenient," he remarked, his tone dripping with skepticism.

Sensing the need to break the ice, Marcus couldn't resist a joke. "Think of us as your friendly neighborhood troubleshooters. Travel tip: don't book the Beast for after-dinner entertainment."

Aldric's eyes narrowed into slits, and the innkeeper glanced at them uneasily.

"JK, I'm just Rowling you bro." Marcus added.

The captain continued to scowl.

Undeterred, Marcus continued, "Look, we don't have all the answers ourselves. We woke up here with no idea how we got here. But if there's a problem, we want to help solve it."

Zara shot him an appreciative glance, silently thanking him for some seriousness. "Captain, we mean no harm. If there's a threat, we want to help."

Aldric's scrutiny did not waver. "Defenders," he muttered as if testing the word. "You woke up in a strange place with no recollection of how you got here, and claim you're here to help?"

"That's the gist of it," Marcus said, leaning back on his heels and crossing his arms. "Think of us as fate's inconvenient gift."

Finally, sensing they posed no immediate threat, Aldric relented. "Very well. Follow me," he said, leading them to a quieter corner of the inn.

Gesturing for them to sit, he remained standing, his imposing figure casting a long shadow. "The Beast," Aldric began, "has been a thorn in Riverhaven's side for weeks. Glowing red eyes, matted fur, and razor-sharp claws. It strikes in the dead of night."

Zara leaned in.

"Have you noticed any patterns in its attacks? Specific times, locations, anything?" she asked.

Aldric looked impressed by her question. "It preys upon the outskirts, rarely venturing into the heart of the village. It's smart—exploiting fear, always striking where people least expect."

Marcus, ever the opportunist, seized on this information. "So, it's not a dumb brute. It has a game plan," he mused. "Which means we need one too."

Aldric nodded, appreciating the seriousness in Marcus's tone. "Indeed. That's what makes it so dangerous."

Feeling their resolve harden, Marcus broke the silence. "Alright, let's not just stand around then. We have to do something. We were brought here for a reason. If this Beast is causing trouble, maybe it's our job to stop it. "

Aldric's gaze warmed slightly. "You speak with conviction. Perhaps you're more than just lost travelers."

Recognizing the weight of Aldric's words, Zara added, "Thank you, Captain. We'll do everything we can to help protect Riverhaven."

Marcus couldn't resist one last barb to ease the tension. "And if nothing else, think of us as the village's newest pest control."

Aldric watched them carefully but didn't refute them. "Very well. But take heed. I'll be watching you closely."

With that, Captain Aldric led them to a few of the guards and some villagers who had encountered the Beast.

Gathered around a small table, villagers shared stories with hushed voices, the fear in their eyes evident.

As they left the inn once more, Marcus frowned, his mind swirling with worries. He couldn't shake off the inexplicable sense of inadequacy that had taken root since they had arrived in Everrealm. Sure, humor came easily to him, but courage in the face of deadly threats? That was uncharted territory.

"Don't worry. We'll figure this out," Zara said, sensing his concern.

Marcus flashed a brief smile. They walked mostly in silence toward the outskirts of Riverhaven when Marcus felt a flicker in his mind, a hazy image surfacing from the depths of his forgotten memories.

It was a fragment—a flash of a moment where he'd made someone laugh, someone whose face he should know but couldn't place.

Zara noticed Marcus slowing down, his eyes distant. "What is it?"

Marcus shook his head. "Just... a memory, I think. I made someone laugh—really laugh." He described the snippet he recalled: a vibrant scene of playful banter and heartfelt laughter. Marcus could feel a warmth in his heart, a genuine joy he didn't fully understand.

Quickly changing the subject, Marcus returned his focus to the beast. "Alright, so we've got a Beast with a strategy," he began, breaking the silence, "which means we need an even better strategy. How about I use my Whimsical Spells to create distractions, confuse it, while you set up some tactical traps?"

Zara leaned against a wooden post, her face contemplative. "We need more than just distractions. We need to study its patterns in depth, and understand its next move. My Tactical Insight gives us an edge, but we'll need something more... physical to stop it."

Marcus grinned, feeling the excitement bubbling up inside him. "Maybe my spells can set up illusions—make it see things that aren't there. Things it's afraid of. And you—your precision could guide it right into a trap."

Zara's lips curled into a rare smile. "It could work. Measures combined with counter-measures. This Beast won't know what hit it."

They set out, determined to gather more information and formulate an airtight plan. Marcus couldn't help but crack another joke. "You know, if all goes well, maybe we'll change careers. Be the Everrealm's first Beastbusters. Got a nice ring to it."

Zara chuckled, a sound that was both rare yet comforting. "Let's focus on saving Riverhaven first, Marcus. Then you can think about branding."
