Don't You Remember? [ISEKAI LITRPG]
Chapter 1: Did he just push her?

Chapter 1: Did he just push her?

Marcus Thompson had always prided himself on being the least serious person in any room. Whether it was cracking jokes during math class or debating why pineapple belongs on pizza—spoiler alert: it did—he lived life with an air of whimsy. So, when he found himself face-to-face with an ethereal portal pulsating with shades of blue and gold, he could hardly contain his enthusiasm.

"Would you look at this thing?" he exclaimed, nudging the person next to him with a playful elbow. "It's like a magical disco ball! I half expect a wizard to pop out and flash us his magical wand!"

The girl beside him rolled her eyes, her stoicism cracking just enough to reveal a hint of amusement. "Maybe don't mess with it? Not every portal is an invitation to a party, you know."

"Oh, come on, it's got to be more fun than—"

Suddenly, Marcus pushed the woman into the portal. As soon as he crossed into the portal himself, the fabric of reality warped around him, expanding and contracting like a kaleidoscope. His senses blurred, and with a jolt, Marcus landed on a soft surface that looked suspiciously like a grassy field, his body tingling with an unfamiliar energy.

[System Notification: Welcome to Everrealm! You have been chosen as a Defender of this realm. Your journey begins now.]

Marcus's eyelids fluttered open, his vision blurry and unfocused. Blinking slowly, he tried to make sense of his surroundings—an ethereal landscape of swirling blues and golds, pulsing with an otherworldly energy.

"Where... where am I?" he muttered, his voice echoing strangely in the vast expanse.

Gingerly, he pushed himself up into a sitting position, his hands sinking slightly into the spongy surface beneath him. A groan sounded from nearby, and Marcus turned his head to see a dark-haired young woman in a gray jacket stirring a few feet away. She sat up, rubbing her temples, her brows knitted in confusion.

"Hey there," Marcus called out, trying for a friendly grin despite the strangeness of the situation. "Guess we're in the same boat, huh? Any idea what this place is?"

The woman regarded him warily, her dark eyes sharp and assessing. "No clue. Last thing I remember is..." She trailed off, her face scrunching up as she tried to recall. "I don't know. It's all a blur."

"Yeah, same," Marcus sighed. "Well, I'm Marcus. Marcus Thompson." He stuck out his hand.

After a moment's hesitation, the woman reached out and shook it briefly. "Zara Chen."

[System Notification: You have met your fellow Defender, Zara Chen. Your destinies are now intertwined.]

As their hands made contact, a booming voice suddenly filled the air, resonating from everywhere and nowhere at once: "WELCOME TO EVERREALM, DEFENDERS!"

Marcus and Zara leapt to their feet, instinctively moving back-to-back as they scanned their surroundings for the source of the voice. But there was no one else in sight, just the shimmering portal and the endless expanse.

"Defenders? What the fuck is going on?" Zara demanded. "And where are we?"

"You have been chosen," the voice continued, "to serve as guardians of this realm. A great danger threatens the very fabric of Everrealm, and only you can stop it."

"Whoa, whoa, hold up," Marcus interjected, waving his hands. "Chosen? Guardians? Look, I think there's been some kind of mistake. We don't even know where we are or how we got here, let alone how to defend... whatever this place is."

"Your past lives are irrelevant," the voice declared dismissively. "What matters is the present, and the role you must now play. The Memory Echo System will guide you."

"Memory Echo System?" Zara repeated skeptically. "What are you—"

Her words were cut off as two glowing orbs suddenly materialized in front of them, one pulsing with a warm golden light, the other with a cool blue radiance. Mesmerized, Marcus and Zara each reached out hesitantly to touch one.

[System Notification: The Memory Echo System allows you to manifest your own memories and experiences as powers and abilities in Everrealm. Choose wisely, as your initial selection will shape your path as a Defender.]

As Marcus's fingers brushed the surface of the golden orb, a jolt of energy surged through him and a rush of images flooded his mind—fragments of memories, emotions, experiences. Laughter shared with friends, the thrill of adventure, the warmth of companionship. And clearest of all, an overwhelming sense of loss, centered around a young man with kind eyes and an infectious grin.

Gasping, Marcus staggered back, his heart hammering in his chest. He looked over at Zara and saw his own shock and confusion mirrored on her face.

"What... what was that?" he managed, his voice shaking slightly.

Before Zara could respond, the voice spoke again: "Now choose your opening power."

Marcus and Zara exchanged uncertain glances and then turned their attention to the orbs, which had shifted subtly, presenting symbols.

[Memory Echo Selection: Choose one]

[Joyful Presence - Enhances charisma and social skills, allowing for easier interactions and persuasion.]

[Whimsical Spells - Allows the user to manifest unpredictable and creative spells based on joyful memories.]

Marcus couldn't help but chuckle at the descriptions. "Look at these options. I can pick 'Joyful Presence' that enhances charisma or 'Whimsical Spells' that... oh, definitely this one."

[Marcus has selected Whimsical Spells as his initial Memory Echo power!]

Zara raised an eyebrow. "Fitting. Very fitting, Marcus." She studied the symbols in front of her.

[Memory Echo Selection: Choose one]

[Tactical Insight - Enhances problem-solving capabilities and perception, allowing the user to foresee possible outcomes in dynamic situations.]

[Precision Combat - Boosts physical capabilities and combat prowess, enabling precise strikes and enhanced reflexes.]

"Let's see... 'Tactical Insight' that enhances strategic thinking or 'Precision Combat' that boosts physical capabilities... Tactical Insight it is."

[Zara has selected Tactical Insight as her initial Memory Echo power!]

As they activated their chosen powers, a surge of energy filled them. Marcus felt a playful warmth course through him, while Zara experienced a razor-sharp clarity.

[System Notification: Congratulations! You have unlocked your initial Memory Echo powers. As you progress and gain experience, you will be able to enhance and expand your abilities.]

"Now go, Defenders. Your quest awaits," the voice commanded. A shimmering path appeared before them, leading off into the distance.

Marcus and Zara exchanged a long, dubious look. "I don't trust this," Zara said flatly. "We have no idea what's really going on here."

"True," Marcus acknowledged. "But what choice do we have? It's not like we can click our heels together three times and go home." He offered a half-hearted grin. "Besides, aren't you curious to see where this yellow brick road leads?"

Zara rolled her eyes but fell into step beside him as they started forward.

[Quest Update: The Defenders' Calling]

[- Objectives completed: Unlocked initial Memory Echo powers]

[- New Objective: Follow the path to Riverhaven]

Despite the strangeness and the looming sense that they were in way over their heads, a small thrill of excitement sparked in Marcus's chest. As they walked, the dreamlike landscape began to morph. The swirling blues and golds slowly transitioned into a more tangible world—a landscape of green fields, distant mountains under a twilight sky, and the occasional flicker of firelight from what Marcus assumed were homes.

"I have to admit," Zara said after a while, breaking the silence, "this place is... mesmerizing."

Marcus nodded. "Yeah, it feels like we're walking through a dream."

Up ahead, the silhouette of a village emerged through the soft mists. The path led them to the outskirts of the rustic settlement. Weather-worn wooden buildings with steep roofs huddled together around a central square with a gurgling fountain. Lanterns hung from eaves and posts, bathing the scene in a comforting glow. The architecture was an eclectic mix of medieval European and East Asian influences.

[System Notification: You have reached Riverhaven, a quaint village in the heart of Everrealm. Explore the area and gather information to progress your quest.]

"Guess this must be Riverhaven," Marcus remarked, glancing at the luminous map display hovering over Zara's high-tech bracelet. "Looks cozy enough."

Zara traced a finger over the projected map, zooming in on various notations. "There's an inn near the center of town according to this. We should head there and try to gather some information."

Muffled sounds of chatter and clinking glasses drifted from up ahead, along with the tantalizing aroma of roasting meat. The inn appeared to double as the town's tavern. Marcus and Zara quickened their pace, eager to find some answers and perhaps a warm meal.

[Quest Update: The Defenders' Calling]

[- New Objective: Investigate Riverhaven and gather information about the Beast]

They entered the inn, where the murmur of conversation grew louder. The interior was warm and inviting, with wooden beams and a large hearth crackling merrily against one wall. Villagers sat at tables, enjoying their meals and drinks, oblivious to the newcomers.

Marcus approached the innkeeper, a stout man with a bushy beard and twinkling eyes. "Excuse me, we were hoping to get some information about this place... and maybe something to eat."

The innkeeper gave them a friendly nod. "Welcome to the Riverhaven Inn. We've got plenty of food and drink. As for information, what are you looking to know?"

"Well," Marcus hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. "We were just wondering if there's been any... unusual activity around here lately."

The innkeeper's expression darkened slightly. "Unusual activity, you say? You must be talking about the Beast."

"The Beast?" Zara asked, her Tactical Insight already processing the implications.

"Aye," the innkeeper said gravely. "It's been terrorizing our village for the past fortnight. Striking at random, leaving bloodshed in its wake. Three villagers already, and now we're all on edge, waiting for the next attack."

[Quest Update: The Defenders' Calling]

[- New Information: The Beast has been terrorizing Riverhaven, claiming the lives of villagers.]

Marcus and Zara exchanged a worried glance. It seemed their role as Defenders was about to be put to the test.

"Is there anything we can do to help?" Marcus asked, his usual playful demeanor replaced by determination.

The innkeeper studied them for a moment before nodding. "If you're serious about helping, you'll want to speak with Captain Thorne. He's the head of our village guard and has been trying to track the creature."

"Thank you," Zara said sincerely.

As they moved to leave, the innkeeper called out, "And be careful. The Beast is no ordinary creature. It'll take more than just courage to face it."

[Quest Update: The Defenders' Calling]

[- New Objective: Speak with Captain Thorne and learn more about the Beast]

Marcus and Zara nodded, their resolve strengthening as they headed out into the night, ready to face their first challenge as Defenders of Everrealm.

They reached the central square where they found Captain Thorne issuing orders to a group of wary-looking guards. Tall and broad-shouldered, with stern features that spoke of years of hard-won experience, he turned to them with a questioning look.

"We heard about the Beast," Zara began. "We're here to help."

The captain's eyes narrowed. "And who might you be?"

"We're the new Defenders," Marcus explained. "We want to help end this threat."

A flicker of hope crossed Thorne's face. "Defenders, you say? Then perhaps there is a chance," he murmured. "Meet me inside the inn. We'll discuss this in private."
