Chapter 09 - Gnawing to Victory
I woke up to slaps administered by a furious Shikman.
“What the Seven Hells do you think you are doing, you have been out for 20 minutes. Did you just consume some loot without asking about consequences ? Your are our carry, you can’t just go to sleep like that. And we have just been having a swell time turning your oversized body over to get the armor off, while the divine stormlord took his beauty nap, start using that big head of yours already”.
I looked around, getting used to the tirades from Shikman.
Yes it had been stupid, and I should stop assuming. And I was prepared to say that, but as I looked about my eyes caught Scooter licking the insides of my discarded armor pieces.
I sure hope he won't get too much of a taste for my blood I thought to myself, then sat up and gave an apology to Shikman, very briefly promising that I would heed his wisdom and council in the future.
I then cut off his no doubt long winded counter reply and stated that we had to get moving fast, and all saw the immediate wisdom in that, except Scooter who had to be told by me quite explicitly to quit licking the inside of my crotch armor piece and get along.
We set a pace where everybody was hard pressed, and Shikman had to make us slow down once in a while, but generally kept a good jog in the tropic bog.
We moved at a fast rate, moving north, and could now see valley cliffsides starting to tighten, we would soon be out of this swamp, but from what Kerthax had explained, it would be a brief stint of plains, then a rocky trail and back to swamp territory.
After several hours, the first rays of morning light had pushed away the dark, and now the heat of the sun started to warm up the swamp, another day in paradise.
Age of the Godlings - Year 0 - Kroonensnoob - Day 6
I judged that the risk of complete exhaustion, mentally and physically, was more severe than the risk of the Terrorherbist gang catching us.
I sensed that I would have to be firm, we were riding on several adrenaline highs, and were coming down and getting tired and surly.
“We need to camp, this seems like a good spot. But first the excising of our wounds. Kerthax, lie down, and Shikman will see if he can scrape anything out of your wounds, after that grab some food if you can, otherwise go to sleep, we will wake you up when its your turn for watch”.
Kerthax got down, with a nervous look on his scaly face. But Shikman worked deftly in the light. I healed him afterwards.
Shikman started working on me, and after several agonosing minutes he happily exclaimed “I just got the Anatomy skill, this is something I have never tried my hand at before, marvelous”.
I just kept staring at Kerthax, while Shikman was at work on my wounds.
Kerthax pulled a smoked fishfrog out from his inventory and sat down, finished it in 30 seconds and was off to sleep after yet another 30 seconds.
Scooter sniffed at the remains left behind, then began to chew the bony remains and get all the good stuff.
I noticed Scooter had a wound as well, Shikman would have to work on that as well, that could be difficult, but the Ghostfur hyena seemed loyal enough.
“Scooter come over here” I called. It walked slowly towards me.
“Listen buddy, the little guy needs to scrape the bad shit out of you, it hurts like fuck, but we don’t want to have any eggs growing inside of you. “.
While talking I motioned to Shikman with my eyes while cuddling Scooter and holding him in a firm grip, and spoke on “If you had seen the movies from my planet, you would know that it’s no good to have alien monsters living in eggs inside you.”
Scooter howled as Shikman dug in, and instinctively tried to bite him, I kept his head locked, and kept up my calm talk, with the other hand I pinched Scooter hard on a muscular hindquarter, if his nervous system was slightly like Earth mammals then it should help to generally overload his nervous system and dull the pain a bit from the excision.
Then it was Scooters turn for a [Minor Heal]
Shikman worked quickly and stepped back, holding his hands out, while Scooter glared murder at him. I cuddled Scooter, and told him that Shikman was such a good doctor and had made him better. Just the same Shikman went on the other side of Kerthax, so he would not be lying asleep in the vicinity of Scooter.
Scooter had calmed down now, and with his omni-tool that he most often used to probe and taste with, he was now cleaning the wound, or something.
I definitely would not consider that tongue licking anything as cleaning, and would have to respectfully decline any further attempts by Scooter to sample my juices in person.
I got up, and walked around our little camp, stretching my muscles while keeping an eye out for any predators. There was 4 racial sets of blood, sour sweat and stress wafting in the air, it would not do to become a 4 course buffet just now.
I thought about fiddling with my new skill and character sheet and all, but I was too distracted by all the menus and stats to be guarding at the same time, it would have to wait, and I was way too tired to do it, when my guard shift was over.
So I walked around, gnawing wood to pass time. Only gnawing wood seemed very different now, and a menu popped up into my head.
You have learned Rune Magic through the skill of Rune Gnawing.
Your skill in Rune Gnawing will determine your Rune Magic skill.
At your current skill level you know 2 runes.
* Storing - A receptacle for magical energy.
* Activation - A trigger for a runic enchantment
I starred in amazement, but I had already become too distracted and had to close the menu, I was no good guarding while playing MMO in my head and burning the midnight oil.
Finally I reckoned that 3 hours had passed, and I awoke Kerthax, who got up, with his usual cheery morning disposition and started eating smoked fish frog.
Somehow the smell or the sound of him eating woke up Scooter, who stretched and came over to look at Kerthax eating, which could be understood as his food being prepared.
He had been a very good doggie though, so I handed Scooter a smoked Fishfrog, and he greedily dug into it. I rubbed his head and scratched his ears.
I asked Kerthax to wake me and Shikman in 3-4 hours, and then crashed into a dreamless stupor of sleep.
I woke to Kerthax gently shaking me awake, he looked a bit paler green than his usual self, but it had been a hard time on all of us.
We got up and about, and moved at a more steady pace through the rest of the day, it wasn't more than a couple of hours before we got to the end of the valley.
I decided that we needed to gain strength, and not fall during night in some treacherous slippery cliff mountain pass. So we camped again, took turns keeping watch, and I even let Shikman have the first 2 hours, which Kerthax seemed very smug about.
I now had energy to go through my character sheet, and my new Rune Gnawing skill, and could practice gnawing at the graveyard shift later tonight.
I tried the Rune Gnawing thing again, and the menu came up again.
At your current skill level you know 2 runes.
* Storing - A receptacle for magical energy.
* Activation - A trigger for a runic enchantment
I asked Shikman, who was on guard duty, and after the usual hysteria of me unlocking another cool ability which rune magic apparently was, he calmed down and explained at least part of what he knew.
I’m not entirely sure if he was holding something back, but I just have a feeling. Still I learned quite a bit.
Rune crafting is usually done on metal or stone, but can also be burned into wood.
It is a form of enchantment.
And as with other enchantments a very defining quality is the material of the object which is enchanted, as each material has a certain capacity for enchantment, defining the upper limit for what kind of magical power can be harnessed by the material. However some materials may be more suited to contain the magic from certain schools. He mentioned other variables as well. The ambient mana level, which was explained as the degree of natural mana in the environment.
The overall workmanship quality of the object will also have a significant impact on the enchanting capacity of the object.
Shikman gave an example of an Auspicious quality level which is a tier of 10/13, compared to a Meager quality level, which we were able to make stuff of, if we really worked hard and with our superior iron tools. Meager was tier 4/13.
The creator god nerd also thought that Rune gnawing could be used on a variety of objects never before subjected to Runic Enchantments.
But again the advantage that gave, didn’t necessarily weigh up the drawback that I wouldn’t be able to enchant stone or metal weapons, unless I somehow got superteeth, which considering everything else couldn't be ruled out.
But then again wood, leather and vegetables would be available materials at our tech level, so it could perhaps be turned into an early start advantage which would later be nothing more than a cheap gimmick.
Well time would show.
Shikman said that he didn’t know any runes, and that if a person luckily had unlocked this through their loot. Then they would presumably learn new runes through that skill, when advancing it at certain thresholds..
The only practical way to learn it was from a master.
When I got to level 50 of the skill, I would be able to teach it to others with the help of some system skill master ability.
Shikman said that almost all skills worked like that, with the exceptions being esoteric racial abilities etc.
So it would probably be something restricted to Hipponians, which was okay with me, it might that it could be extended to some other races if their mouth gives them some advantage in chewing wood.
Shikman had however warned me that focusing too much mana into an object could cause the object to detonate and the force of that explosion would be in proportion to the mana invested in it.
Also I could fail to do it properly and it would also detonate inside my face.
Shikman didn’t know how much mana would be used to fuel a runic enchantment, nor how much would be too much for our materials.
He did however know that the offset of being able to create many runic enchantments, was that it required large quantities of mana to imbue each enchantment.
Armed with a bit of knowledge,I got a bit away from them, and tried not to think too much about a piece of rune magic going haywire and detonating inside my mouth.
It didn't seem totally without danger.
However my IT experience told me that I could possibly devise a test protocol, with a cautionary approach.
If somehow possible I would try to make a runic enchantment allowing 1 minute of Electro-Metavision, that would be a base mana cost of 2 MP, unless enchantments could be made with decimal mana points.
This would be about double the theoretical minimum amount of mana points conceivable to power a spell or enchantment, and the severity of the risk should thus be mitigated.
I tenderly put a piece of wood into my mouth and the menu appeared, focusing on the menu, next to it a picture of the piece of wood appeared in my mind.
And I selected the storage rune, and was then prompted to fill it with a known spell, I selected Electro Metavison, and next to the cost a slider appeared, and the cost would scale with it.
I set the slider to 1 minute, as expected the cost was 2 MP.
I could then move the storage rune around on the wood piece.
Next thing up was the Activation rune.
As soon as I selected that, a spread of new information was displayed.
Activation Rune - Known variants:
* (3) Destructible : An item that unleashes the enchantment when the item is destroyed.
* (10) Command word : A certain word must be selected when creating the enchantment.
Okay, I will go with Destructible in this case.
Another rune appeared in my mental image of the wood piece.
Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.
The base cost of this runic enchantment is 5.
2 - Electro-Metavision - 1 minute
3 - Destructible activation
Rune Gnawing skill is at 2.08 - Mana cost to power enchantment is at -1%.
Total cost to power enchantment : Base cost 5 x 10 x 99% = 50 MP (49,5)
I fiddled around, and was able to remove the Activation rune, and then placing it again now with a command word variant.
The base cost of this runic enchantment is 7.
2 - Electro-Metavision - 1 minute
10 - Command word activation
Rune Gnawing skill is at 2.08 - Mana cost to power enchantment is at -1%.
Total cost to power enchantment : Base cost 12 x 10 x 99% = 119 MP (118,8)
Going for the minimum option I switched back to destructible activation. Maybe those 70 MP could mean the difference between my head blowing into two or more pieces, and me being blasted but having a sliver of health left.
Next came the gnawing part, I aligned the piece with my teeth using my tongue and started working on it.
The mental image persisted while I gnawed and I saw rune elements light up, as that particular part of the runic gnawing was completed.
My manabar was also steadily decreasing.
As both runes were near completion, I nearly bit the piece in two when Shikman startled me.
I held up a hand to ward of any verbal avalanches, and focused on chewing the last part in small measured bites.
The 2 runes were completed now, and my mana had depleted by a considerable amount.
And wait for it, 1, 2 ,3 no explosion.
You have crafted a Runic Enchantment of Electro-Metavision on a Ebbelpron wood piece.
Quality : Downright shitty
I took out the glistening piece of wood, and wiped saliva off it on a nearby plant's leaves.
The thing was I was pretty sure that whoever broke this stupid little piece of wood would gain Electro-Metavision for 1 minute.
But if the risk was my head blowing up from some mana feedback, then this was not worth it.
At least not until I had found my favored people.
Then at least it would be a quick death, and then respawn, in theory at least.
I was too tired to have a conversation with Shikman, but necessity made me.
“So Shikman, can I show you something very godly intimate ?”
He looked at me “what are you up to ?”
“Grab this wood piece and break it, then see what happens”.
He grunted, took the wood piece, and easily snapped it.
Then looked up at me in surprise, and ogled at the general world with a wide eyed view.
To be fair it did get quite dark here in the swamp jungle, and with Electro-Metavision all surfaces with organics on them, and even some inorganic materials showed up, providing a sort of rainbow disco night vision.
The rainbow stuff was all very distracting at first, but once you became a bit used to it, there was a pattern to it, and the colors started to convey information, or at least I speculated that it was such.
Shikman was very impressed with my vision skill, and also when I explained more about the rune-gnawing, though he could definitely see the problem of suffering a catastrophic mana backlash from an object in the runegnawers mouth.
He said that his aura could help with this, but that runegnawing seemed like an innately dangerous crafting skill, and he needed time to think of any mitigating solutions.
While I liked the idea of making some kind of Stun or Soothe the Beast runic wand, I was quite attached to my new Hipponian body, and the thought of my huge jaw popping off while the general front of my face exploded, didn’t really set well with me.
While imagining this scenario my brain also kept flashing images of the Stygian Octodile with sudden spikes erupting from its head from the iron antlers.
So no more runegnawing until I find my favoured people, and then I will show them my party trick of headsplosion.
I still had one notification icon, this one with the Party Leader icon, oh 12 points to spend, I focused on them, and they expanded into a list.
Party Leader Perks :

Well that was easy, as I didn’t have enough points to buy anything.
With weird magical business concluded or at least postponed I went to sleep.
Morning came…
Age of the Godlings - Year 0 - Kroonensnoob - Day 7
I stretched and yawned.
Then got up from my little pond near the camp and waddled over.
I saw Scooter a bit away, poking at something. Perhaps he had found some rodent, we all gave Scooter the privilege of privacy during mealtimes, and today was no exception.
The smoked fishfrog supply would soon run out, but we ate our fill, and got moving.
A slippery muddy ravine was in the middle of the pass, and we moved through that. The sides of the pass quickly became so steep that there was no other choice than waddling through the mud, which of course was sloshing downstream agains our direction, fast in the middle, but more like lazy slush ice in the sides.
I had lifted Shikman out of the mud, and put him on my shoulders, he had been thigh high in mud, and I was up to my knees.
We sloshed on. Scooter spelunked at the steep sides rather than sloshing through.
I saw him going flat and ears back before I heard his soft growl. My lovely little carrion radar had triggered again !
With a hand I motioned for Kerthax to stop, and tried to put Shikman gently down.
Moving slowly forward while activating my Electro Metavision, I passed around a wavy bend in the mud dike we were walking in.
Something immediately lit up differently in my vision, it had green, brown and red tendrils intertwined and pulsing with a vibrant force I had not seen before.
Which was kinda weird because from this distance and slightly obscured by vegetation, it looked like a greenish cow. Well maybe a sort of green and black armor plated cow, or maybe even a bull with a natural scale armor of oxidized copper.
What is it with me and monstrous metal creatures ? First the iron bird, and now a green copper bull.
Moving as silently as a ninja, or at least trying to. I got back to the others.
“There is a big four legged monster, with horns and green hide, it looks tough and dangerous”.
“A Gorgon” Kerthax whispered, and started explaining.
“It can exhale poison smoke, and is very territorial. They move in herds, so this may be lost from the herd, or a young bull in exile. I dare say that with only the ravine to move in, it would be tantamount to suicide, to try to sneak past it.”
“Kerthax, me and Shikman have a timed quest to find our people, we can’t just wait for this poison gas cow to stumble and break a leg, we have to get ..”
“Oh my Perun, thats an excellent idea, we build a trap, lure it into it, then run past it.
If it gets sufficiently dazed or damaged by our trap, we can consider if we want to risk killing it, that would mean both XP and probably valuable materials. If not, it only needs to be dazed for a couple of minutes and we can get on our way.
I listened to Shikman speaking, even if he did always interrupt me, he made sense.
Dammit.
“Ok Shikman, thats the plan, which trap are you thinking about ?”
Kerthax stood watch while Shikman first explained trap, then location, then mechanism, then we got into an argument.
“Would you two please keep it down, there is a Gorgon just up the lane. Stop the discussion, and start doing stuff”. Kerthax hissed at us.
I motioned for everyone to be quiet with a hand sliding across my throat, they got my point, and I thought for some moments, then I whispered to Shikman, and motioned also for Kerthax to listen
“Look, I feel you, with the whole getting this XP and loot, but it's too risky. We don’t have anything which that beast won’t tear to pieces.
I will try to distract it. You will slip by, walk on a couple of hours, then light a fire while there is still plenty of daylight.
Along your way drop twigs which you break in two places. I will try to find your route. Kerthax, if I am not at your campsite, after a full day and and night, you must lead Shikman on to the gnome tribes. Assume I have died and respawned someplace. And lets try to meet at the river after the waterfall.
Now head up to that side of the ravine, and when it comes after me, run as fast as you can“.
I motioned, and Kerthax looked a bit dubiously, but Shikman seemed happy enough with the arrangement.
I watched them move up the side of the ravine, and into hiding.
I pulled out some stakes from my inventory and mounted large chunks of octodile meat on them. That at least was a small chance, I was pretty sure that our pointy sticks would have zero chance against this foe.
I looked at Scooter.
“No crazy stuff, if anything happens we both scoot”
Maybe he understood me, he was often just looking at me with tongue lolling out of one side of his mouth.
I was sort of confident that we could move faster in the rocky terrain of this ravine than a bull, which I guessed would be more sorted for the plains Kerthax described.
I moved to the other side of the ravine, and awkwardly climbed with my hands full of octodile kebab skewers.
I made quite a racket, and the Gorgon looked in my direction, and immediately started huffing, and exhaling snorts of green gas fumes while scraping the ground withs its front hoof.
“Oh Green Gorgon Cow, have a goofilicious Octodile skewer” - [Soothe the Beast]
The same as last time, I moved in a little jig, almost as my words brought me childish joy.
Only this time, the beast didn’t seem soothed at all, and started its bull charge, exhaling furious spurts of green gas, which passed alongside of its flanks as it build speed and momentum.
I screamed and ran away, fortunately I had come far enough that I would run in the right direction. But judging by the sound it was approaching too fast. I dared a look, and oh hell, it had cleared half the distance, and was thank god, losing some momentum on the ravine slope.
I ran as fast as I could, while Scooter yipped stupidly while running next to me.
I could feel the ground shaking now, and scampered up a rock, hauling Scooter up besides me, when he slipped. I got us up another ledge, but then we were stuck.
The Gorgon moohed in dismay as it slowed down, seeing its targets using dirty tricks. Such as climbing.
It started to walk in circles around the ledge, huffing the green gas out.
We couldnt stay here, but I judged we would be reasonably safe from the poisonous gas at this elevation, as long as we were not standing here for hours.
After 10 minutes, I re-evaluated my opinion, my throat had started to burn, and my eyes were watering profusely.
Scooter was also whimpering.
I continued my focused chewing. At least this should give Kerthax and Shikman good time to get ahead, which just left me and Scooter in a pickle
Evident by the continued stench of chemicals and audible rummaging of the Gorgon, I was confident that it was still present. While chewing I looked at the short distance where we could run, and then presumably get on a rock, then a ledge, and then on a path where we could move all the way up to the end of the ravine, and where the Gorgon could not follow.
I focused on chewing, and trying not to let my mind wander, it wouldn’t do to blow my head out right now.
The throat burning has gotten worse now, but I was ready. I grabbed Scooter in one hand
“I know you don’t understand shit, but are you ready?”
Scooter bobbed his head, tongue all curled up, not lolling at all.
“Whatever” I said.
Then I took the piece from my mouth, waited for the right moment, and then threw it at the Gorgon.
I scampered down the rocky ledge with Scooter in one arm, taking quick strides.
It heard a small clack and then a zap.
I couldn’t resist looking over my shoulder while running.
The Gorgon was keeled over, and lay spasming on the ground. It tried to get up, but its legs were too jittery, it locked eyes with me and stared. Then I hit the cliffs and scampered up, as best my stocky hippponian form could manage, hauling Scooter along with one arm, and flinging him up on the ledge, then heaving myself up.
The Gorgon was now moohing with a most baleful and indignant sound. Cheated of dinner and electrocuted, how sad for the gas cow..
I laid on my back panting, and did not feel sorry at all for the Gorgon. It should have gone for the Octodile kebabs.
I slowly moved with Scooter up the path, while the Gorgon continued its rageful mooing.
It turned out that my contingency plans hadn’t been needed, at the end of the ravine, Shikman and Kerthax were waiting, having heard all the moorings, and a single scream.
To my dismay they had both seen my little taming dance, and Shikman did a little parody of it. But as they both expressed, they were very grateful that I had volunteered to be diversion.’
We came out into the plains, there was still plenty of day left so we pressed on.
Usually it was me setting a firm pace, and telling mostly Shikman to pickup the pace.
But with all the new plants in these plains, I went botanist with electro-metavision, ogling at the all the new flowers and weeds.
But they were right, I could always finish my quest, the journey was more important.
[You have inspected 103/500 lifeforms with Electro-Metavision]
We saw several herds of Gorgon, and wisely kept a large distance to them. Kerthax said that they are herbivores but very territorially aggressive. Which only made me feel even more stupid, given that I had tried feeding it octodile kebab. However what go to me the most was the innocent way Kerthax said it.
We camped and Scooter found a particular nasty rodent, which he caught in the middle of our camp, after knocking everything over. He then proceeded to gnaw its head of, and then just gulp it all down, apart from that, nothing notable happened that night.
Age of the Godlings - Year 0 - Kroonensnoob - Day 8
We broke camp, and got on our way, moving fast. We found what Kerthax claimed was the correct path that lead to the great mudflats, and the waterfall.
Through the course of the last days, especially after the battle in the ant hive, we had gained some more camaraderie in our little party, and often a bit a banter was starting to get tossed back and forth, this was one such time.
“Perun, If I have to hear about your increased height giving you a higher vantage point and allowing you too see through the foliage of the hill and spotting that Antarian hive one more time, I might commit deicide. Only thing is, I’m uncertain if I should end my suffering or yours.”
Shikman was quipping while we walked through the sparse swampbrush.
“Just because you are higher doesn’t make you some kind of genius general or like those commandos you talked about the other night. You have your moments, you are an excellent brawler and a opportunistic diplomat. But it was sheer luck we made it through that hive, those Terrorherbists could have done us in, and you know it”.
I was about to formulate a snarky reply, but wait I could actually see something in the distance, if only Shikman would shut up.
And oddly enough that was when the system decided to slap Shikman in the face with a lukewarm dickcheese sandwich.
