3 - Jungle Fever

Age of the Godlings - Year 0 - Kroonensnoob - Day 1

A grey foggy morning in a smelly tropical swamp, frogs and other wildlife has already been noisy for some hours.

Sudden wind disturbs the long plant stalks, lightning begins to flash with increasing intensity until coalescing into a sphere, and with a final blinding flash disappears, revealing the lumbering form of a naked kneeling Hipponian bull.

He slowly rises, looks around, then abruptly emits a deluge of vomit on the ground and a fair bit on himself.

I groaned, but it felt so weird, even just groaning. I had been a fluffy soul for an undefinable time, then suddenly realized I was the corporeal aspect or whatever and got sucked down the mindtoilet again, For a brief moment of naivety I thought this was all some weird dream, then I realized I was a not in a human body but in body of a Hipponian, a hybrid of human and hippopotamus.

And all this snout stuff and big body, thick limbs felt, well really weird, but throwing up in hippo-man form made it all worse.

In my Hipponian interplanar magnitude hangover I keeled over into the mud, and the mud felt so good. Well okay mud baths was a thing on Earth as well. But not just rolling around the closest fetid swamp hole.

But I didn't really feel cold, sure the mud was cool and nice, but not cold. I looked at my leathery gray hide, matted with black clumps of mud with strands of rotting vegetation in it.

It wasn’t hot yet, but the sun sure did burn, so it would probably be humid hell later in the day.

Could this kind of skin sweat, perspire ? or did I have to cool myself externally with water, or maybe respirating with open mouth, like a dog, to evaporate moisture from the mouth.

Looking at the environment, it looked like a vast tropical wetland.

Other thoughts came to me, and felt sort of defining for my identity. I felt with a hand between my legs, ok check mark on flaccid cock. I emerged from the mud and took a deep inhalation. It was a bit hard to feel with my also big leather hands, as I got up, I saw that I was indeed divinely endowed.

And wait a minute.

Had I just been holding my breath, more or less unconsciously for 4 minutes while rolling in the mud ? I didn’t have a chronometer, so it was hard to tell.

Ok, I was about to check out my tabernacle, better get on with that. Gray, wrinkled, darker in the deep folds and, well massive.

The next thought came somewhat unbidden, but it was a logical extension, maybe I would find Hipponian Females attractive.

After trying to get up several times only to lose balance, and keel over, I opted to get on my knees and try to survey my surroundings and calm myself a bit.

And yes I even had a queue of notifications blinking at me in the corner of my vision.

“Bleerh”, I wiped my snouty weird face with the back of my bigass hippo hand. That sucked.

I looked up, and while I was indeed in a swamp though it was clearly some kind of valley swamp, with green brown cliff sides in the distance rising up into the clouds.

The Godling Volkran the Vivisectionist is the first to suffer a respawn. He and his chosen people gain the “Revenant’s Wrath” talent

So the first godling, had suicided or had been killed almost upon spawning, and for being the first had gotten a talent for himself and his chosen people, maybe I should try making some firsts as well.

I crawled towards a knobbly tree and looked to see if something could be made into a club.

Even with my debuff, I could easily debranch the tree, and I sat down using the tree stump as a rest for my back, and started inspecting my branches, my immediate to be divine tools of creation and destruction.

Okay, at the moment I had improvised weapons, I could make them better, but time for a bit of navel gazing. I thought on character sheet, status or something similar, and after a moment I had apparently gained some mastery of the mysteries of this realm, because a translucent wall of text appeared in front of me.

Ok, so I have magic and can shot lightning out of my arse, but I have no general or combat skills, and no idea of how the actual fuck these skills work, do I think about activating them, or do I have to make some weird hand movement.

As my scrotum had mentioned, the beginning was probably bloody, so I needed to ride this learning curve, and learn the specs of my magical abilities, but first I needed to make my improvised weapons a tad bit better than just broken off branches.

I sat there for quite a while, 2 hours, if the debuff timer didn't pull pranks on me. During that period I made 2 clubs, and 3 stakes, or maybe extremely short spears, which I had sharpened by gnawing with my big teeth, putting this new body to good use and suddenly getting a suprise.

[Felicitations, through hard work you have learned a new skill.

Skills are the butter of civilizations!]

[Your skill in “Woodgnawing” is now 1.16]

Skill gain that was nice, it just seemed like a very primitive skill, but probably very applicable to my present situation.

While I had been gnawing the wood, I had plenty of time to think a bit ahead.

What would be the most rational strategy for waiting out this damned debuff timer. It wasn’t like this swamp had some giant multistory tree that I could hide from predators in.

Also this body probably didn’t evolve from monkeys, and was definitely worse at climbing than a human.

What would Terry the supernerd have done in my situation, apart from watching me die slowly without giving two fucks. Oh well that was my earlier life.

What would he do if he was playing my Hipponian ass in one of those weird RPG games he was always ranting about.

What would Master Sergant Kurinov have done, I hadn’t even finished that thought before my mind made a knee jerk reaction : “Observe, Evaluate, Act.”

If I put myself in one of the deep swamp pools, I should be out of immediate range of most land-based predators, and thus only need to worry about the aquatic, and possibly semi-aquatic predators as myself.

If memory serves me right, Hippo’s can sleep underwater, and rise up to breathe. So I could sleep it off, and then when the debuff went away I would be ready to start searching for other Hipponians.

So after cleaning my teeth with a small piece of leftover wood, I waddled into the brackish water, trying to find a deep spot.

It mostly went well, keeping underwater I emerged to breathe every 5 minutes, this was pretty instinctual.

But if I started to consciously concentrate on it, then it was just like human breathing. You almost had to have something distract your mind to start subconsious breathing.

“Just think of something else you big seacow” I thought to myself.

Master Sergant Kurinov and Ăźbernerd Terry would both agree that I need to practise my spells until they were second nature.

I summoned my character sheet and focused on my spells, mentally squinting at the spell section.

Suddenly it expanded with a confusing deluge of information regarding my spells.

Damn, that didn’t seem simple, and not what I would expect from a newbie character sheet, but then I was a godling with an extremely annoying mentally challenged ethereal aspect who somehow thought of himself as a scottish dwarf, I hoped that my celestial aspect would be less weird.

Even if it was already quite weird, as she was a female sort of version of me.

Never mind my crazy situation, moving forward is what counts.

And the most straightforward of these spells looked to be Electro-Metavision, as it was activated by will, and didn’t require a target.

My head broke the surface of the murky waters, and I tried willing my super vision power on.

GONG!

- World Announcement -

The Godling Infernus the Burning is the first to kill a monster using spells. He and his favored tribe gain the “Arcane Slayer” talent.

It seems my fellow godlings are in a race to become first, and best. I sure hope I can keep up with them

It took some time to use my will correctly and activate the spell, but suddenly I could see delicate pulsing fluorescent filaments in plants and insects around me, I looked around with wonder.

The stumpy trees in the swamp also had the filaments, and focusing on one, it seemed like there was a correlation between the color of the pulsing filaments of the tree and which branches were healthy.

This was pretty amazing, as of yet the specific interpretation of each filament and its properties was beyond me, but I would get there in due time.

Suddenly the semi-tranquil buzz of mosquitoes, gnats and frogs were disturbed by a screech coming from above.

I willed the distracting Electro-Metavision to stop and instinctively looked up and saw 2 abominations of nature, flying above me.

They looked like big eagles, but had the heads of very aggressive cannibal deer, complete with shiny black antlers which glinted in a weird metallic way when catching the light.

Their plumage was different, one of them being flamboyant with blue and green feathers and the other brownish. If Glenhalla had the same general laws of biology, then the flamboyant one, would be the male, and the brown the female.

I submerged in the water again, pulling out a club and a stake from my resting place where I had impaled them in the soft mush of the swamp pool bottom.

Squatting I moved closer to land, and then broke through the water surface, weapons in hand and screaming a defiant warcry at the eagledeers.

They didn’t seem scared, the supposed male swooped low and fast above me, its razor claws were the same black material as the antlers. I swung my makeshift wooden club into the claws, better the club than me.

I’m reasonably sure my swing struck with enough force to break a human spine, but the eagledeer seemed unaffected. That was bad.

And it got worse when my back erupted in pain, the other eagledeer had taken advantage of me being distracted.

You have been raked by Peryton claws for 15 damage.

I ducked down under, this was going out of control, and my life as a godling Avatar could end up being as short lived as a bottle of Vodka in the hands of a hobo.

These eagledeer or Perytons had some cunning, attacking me from both sides.

And I could not stay submerged for long, unlike a Typhoon ICBM sub. They could finish me off in fewer than 10 strikes, and they hadn’t even been using their evil antlers.

Club didn’t seem to work, time to try something else. I emerged again from the water, sure the male came again claws ready, I threw my club at its face, then spun around facing the female Peryton which was, now, unsurprisingly coming at me from behind, claws ready.

It was however not ready for me being ready. My arm shot out and my fist closed like a vice. Grabbing its hindleg above the claws, and then twisting hard until I heard a loud satisfying pop from the leg.

You have inflicted 17 unarmed damage to Peryton.

I pulled it closer and rammed my stake into its body, at least I tried to. But a fucking feather deflected my mighty pointed stick, a feather ! What were these Peryton beasts ?

Then the male dove into my left side, black spiky antlers first, I screamed and let go of the female, who flew off with a shriek, one hindleg dangling unnaturally behind it.

You have been impaled by Peryton antlers for 27 damage.

Bleed effect 1 hp/s for 30 seconds

I looked down into the male Peryton’s mad eyes, and saw my own battlelust reflected in them.

I grabbed its ugly deer head and painfully twisted the antlers out of me, fresh spurts of blood sprayed out of my side.

Its claws found my thigh under the water and started to shred it.

You have been raked by Peryton claws for 12 damage.

I grabbed it tight, and screamed

Stun

at it, and electric energies coursed through me and into its body, which went limp as a noodle.

Knowing that it would probably last under a second, I dunked the stupid eagledeer into water, holding it with both hands around its neck.

I wasn’t sure if the female would be back, but I wasn’t taking any chances. Lets see how long this eagledeer can hold its breath I thought, as I pushed it deeper into the middle of the pond, where I could submerge myself with it.

Under water the battle changed to my favour, I used my considerable bulk to control it, as it resumed its struggle. My somewhat stubby legs went around it, and sizewise I was sort of a newborn baby piggybacking a large parrot.

This way my arms were occupied with controlling the head, making sure it was under water, and not antlering me. My legs wrapped around it, ensured it could not keep up its carving of my divine body, it simply could not reach me from that position.

Having regained the upper hand, I let time work with me, the male Peryton’s movement became more jerky, then weaker, after 2 minutes went noodly again, just like when I stunned it.

Notifications with different icons started piling themselves in the right of my vision.

Not wanting to take chances I stayed under for as long as I could, while reading the notifications.

A whole lot of information, but where was my quest reward, in my inventory, wait, do I have an inventory ? ‘

I though inventory, and to my delight, grid came up into my vision, it was a 5x5 grid, and one of the squares had a sandal icon in it.

The Lightning Masters left Sandal

Next to it was my Glenhallan entry souvenir.

Azure Peal - Freshwater molluscs from the Schilmeere mudbanks can make pearls of beautiful hues. Used for crafting or magic.]

My attention went back to the left sandal.

Apparently I mentally focused on it for too long as it suddenly blinked and was equipped on my foot.

It exited in the same manner of my character sheet, the mental equivalent of shutting a book. It seemed thoughtful intent carried much of this world's interface.

I had priorities other than fiddling around anymore with my newfound inventory for the moment.

I surfaced, still keeping the limb form of the Peryton under water, which could easily be done with one hand now..

The female was nowhere to be seen, but I could hear its distant cries. So much for their happy little family. Based on the whole Nemesis deal, I had a feeling we would meet again.

Looking down at myself I had lots of claw wounds, but the antler attack on my left side had gone in deep, I was afraid that I might have suffered organ damage, and that I might possibly be heading for a serious infection with all that swamp muck.

I swaddled up to the edge of the pond where a clump of rushes stood, while clutching my side with one arm.

I didn’t know if they were poisonous, so I tried touching one, with no reaction. Then I ripped off a few of them and made them into balls and stuffed them into gashes on my side caused by the antlers.

That should take care of the worst bleeding. I remained at shore, what if I passed out while being in the water, I was semi-aquatic not aquatic, and could die from drowning as well as the Peryton had.

Having taken care of the immediate situation, it was debriefing time, with no handler and no backup, I just had myself to talk to, but it was a good habit and worth keeping.

Being semi-aquatic and a big strong Hipponian seemed to have saved the day.

The Stun spell, which I had cast under pressure with no training hadn’t done much difference in terms of damage.

But maybe it had saved me from one round of raking and allowed myself to get into a position to deliver a slow jerk coup de grace.

I had reacted to the threat, and used the environment. I could probably have been better at countering their wolfpack tactics, but the usual tactic of lining up multiple enemies, so they are blocked by their own allies was not feasible against flying creatures, which I had no previous experience fighting against.

But the worst, that damned feather, no feather should have been able to deflect a strong strike like that. Definitely a learning point. This was a genuine fantasy world with magic, and so monsters would have real powers, otherwise they wouldn’t be monstrous.

I must have fallen asleep, when I woke, I guessed it to be early afternoon, and I didn’t feel the planar hangover anymore.

Checking on my injured side, it seemed way better than what could be expected, and the wound didn’t smell foul.

Probably still best not to get too much swampy goodness on my insides though. I remembered my character sheet stating I regenerated 2 hit points per hour, and had a total of 133.

So theoretically I could be at 1 HP on the brink of death, and then 66 hours of simply existing and my own body would repair itself back into shape amazing.

The Peryton was floating arse up in the pond. I waded into the pond, taking care not to get my antler wound under water, and dragged the corpse onto shore.

First of all I plucked a feather, which was quite hard. I then held it up in front of me and activated Electo-Metavision. The world was suddenly awash with the glowing filaments. Though the feather and the corpse had filaments they were not pulsing, I guess that made sense they were dead.

The antler and claws had very tight woven white and black filaments, and looked the same in metavision. The feathers also had a minute amount of this white and black filament, which looked almost like a structural skeleton for the feather.

[You have inspected 1/500 lifeforms with Electro-Metavision]

500 lifeforms, just seemed like an enormous amount, but chunked down to 50 or a 100 a day, and it would be doable, I had an innate feeling that I had to find 500 different types.

I couldn’t just scan 500 ants, but all living things were eligible. Well this feather technically wasn’t living, but it was organic.

I dismissed the notification, and turned my attention back to the Peryton corpse, and tried tapping the 2 hindlegs together so the claws clanged against each other, an unmistakable metallic sound.

Well if these weird Peryton creatures had metal in their antlers and claws, then their feathers might also be reinforced with metal. It was a wonder they could fly, being semi-metallic birds.

I was considering my options, maybe I could make some sort of sleeved vest with a hood, out of this metal bird, perhaps a bit like Aztec eagle warriors.

Using one claw, I started to cut the other claws off, with enough of the bird finger left to form a sort of handle, this could work as a skinning knife.

It was a very sharp skinning knife, and my mighty armor ended up with a bit more holes than strictly necessary. All in all it ended up being a hooded cardigan garment,

[Hooray, through hard work you have learned new skills.

Skills are the butter of civilizations!]

[Your skill in “Skinning” is now 1.09]

[Your skill in “Leatherworking” is now 1.21]

You have crafted Perythorax, a feathered gambeson with coif.

Armor: 7 Durability : 14/14 Quality : Exceedingly low

Well, I’m sure my bambushka would have slapped me silly with the craftsmanship I had shown, but still, exceedingly low, that seemed a bit harsh.

I had opted to remove the antlers, it would have looked imposing, but would have made hiding my big hippo silhouette more difficult. And having a weapon loosely mounted on my head, seemed like a great way to get a critical head injury.

Instead I had one antler in each hand, they would probably be useful at blocking, they were sharp, and I had experienced on my own body the damage they could wreck.

I looked at the mess of offal and intestines, and grabbed some pieces, skewering them on one of the antlers, and wrapping some innards around antler so it could dry out a bit, maybe it could be handy in taming a predator. I thought about putting it in my inventory, but it felt good to have an iron weapon at the ready, even if it wasn't very handy.

I decided to get the last bit out of the day and try to head towards one of the sides of the swamp valley and started my lonesome waddling towards the closest cliff face of the valley sides.

It started raining and I realized that I had yet to drink as a hippoman. I found a plant with large leaves and used it to catch rain, gaining precious few drops.

I also took a small bite of the leaves, they didn't taste very bad, so probably not poisonous. Electro-Metavision didn’t have them shine out in toxic green either, but I still decided to wait a couple of hours before eating more, as it could be something that took a while to poison my Hipponian ass.

I waddled and waddled and then waddled some more. It was rough going the further I came, but swamp holes which would stop a human, I just waded through, pretty sure that my wound must have crusted over enough for me to not get a septic shock by the swamp fluids getting in my insides.

As I neared the cliff sides of the valley, I saw an actual babbling little brook, with running water, and paused there to fill my stomach with water. The plants that I had tasted some hours before also grew here, and I decided to take my fill.

The last rays of the sun was withdrawing from the sky. So it was time to stop, and this campsite at least had freshwater.

I followed the brook to a picturesque waterfall at the steep cliff-face, and was quite winded.

Turning around I could see the breathtaking view of the swamp valley, a smattering of green and brown all muddled together in the dusk. There was no way I would be able to spot my Hipponian people in that mess, or was there.

I activated Electro-Metavision, and the swamp tableau in front of me lighted up in colorful pulsing filaments, too numerous to make out individually but a pattern could be seen. I scanned the immediate surroundings, all ordinary, then widened my search.

Glaring at the horizon, I saw a spot to the north, in the valley floor with slightly different colors. I couldn’t make out any details, but the difference in color must mean, well something.

At this macroscopic level, I thought there must be quite a lot of stuff different from the rest of the swamp, for me to see a change of coloration. Then again, I didn’t really know that much about my supervision spell. I stuck a stake in between some rocks, indicating my position, and another stake out a few yards indicating the direction of the anomaly.

I followed the brook back down, to a small pond, and waddled in. It was a bit unnatural, but logically I was a lot safer sleeping submerged in a pond, rather than just lying next to it.

As I submerged I went over my character sheet again. Terry would probably have foregone sleep just to grind one spell again and again, because he had read on the forums that it could unlock some badass stuff at higher levels, but I needed a clear head if I wanted to make solid decisions. Just before I fell asleep, the thought came to me; does Hipponians dream of semi-aquatic militaristic sheep ?

“‘Help help i’m drowning i’m drowning”, I flailed around and started to scream underwater, water filled my mouth, and I immediately closed it again.

Ok, i’m not drowning, in my sleep I had dreamt of steaks, milkshakes and all sorts of western goodieness, and quite reasonably completely forgotten the insanity of my new life. I stood up on my legs, and hawked a bit of water out. It was a beautiful starry night.

I activated my super vision and looked around, yep everything checks out, swampy plants, insects.

Wait insects were a good protein source, so I spent some minutes with super vision on, snacking weird three legged crickets which were hiding in small hollows in the knobby trees around the pond. And also advancing my quest for new lifeforms.

Might as well, while i'm not in bed I thought, or actually sleeping on all fours in a pond, subconsciously rising about every something minutes to breathe.

Trying my best to get my Hippo snout to whistle a merry tune I walked up the brook again, to my positioning stakes.

I kept Electro-Metavision on as it was much easier seeing, as most surfaces had some organic material on them, which were lit up by their glowing filaments.

When I reached my position stake, I could easily see the discoloration of the filaments in the horizon, something different was out there, and seemed to be stationary, at least from afternoon to night.

I came back in the morning, and sighted along my position stick, through the direction stick, and the anomaly was still there.

Target is stationary, I thought to myself.
