After a comfortable night's sleep Leonard... no, Lucian. He wakes up early, at about 6:35 a.m. He was happy to wake up early because it was exactly what he wanted, he wanted to wake up early so that he could get to know more of the house and the streets where he lives, and then get acquainted with his sisters, Mary and Evelyn.
He quickly removes the sheet from his body and stretches, then gets out of bed. He walks over to the closet and looks for some nice clothes to wear.
He soon puts on a white dress shirt, a brown vest, black pants and black shoes.
He looks in the mirror behind the left door of his closet and smiles slightly.
“Time to explore!” He thought excitedly. He needs to find out more about the place he's living in.
He grabs the handle of his door and then turns it and pushes the door open, opening it slowly so as not to make too much noise, he doesn't know if his sisters are awake or not.
He leaves the room and finally has a better view of the hallway. The house has one floor, the corridor he is in has his door and two others on the left and one on the right.
The corridor also leads to the living room and the front door of the house is visible from afar.
He walks down the corridor with wooden floors and brick walls and ceiling painted a bright yellow.
He arrives in the living room, where there is a square table with three chairs, a simple kitchen with several small cupboards around it, a slightly torn sofa and the front door.
He decides to go into the kitchen and prepare something to eat. He opens the drawers and realizes that he has very little, the only things he can find are 4 slices of bread, a small amount of goat's milk and a tiny amount of cheese... the food situation is complicated...
He prepares a simple loaf of bread with cheese, he puts little cheese on it to save money, and he decides not to drink milk because he has little, and he thought it would be better to leave it for his sisters when they woke up.
After eating all the dry bread and cheese, he plans his goals for today “Right now, I'm going to walk down the street, get to know my surroundings and a bit of the city I live in... I know I live in Murren, the mainland, but I don't know the city yet... After that I'm going to go back home, try to get to know my sisters better and then I'm going to Durf Watson's house, I need to see how he's doing and try to find out what that strange object he mentioned in his letter is.
Lucian opens the front door and leaves his house, where he now finds himself in his street. The street is very simple, with very old houses and apartments, along well-lined cobbled streets with almost no potholes, where horse-drawn carriages and a few people walk by, there are lampposts and a sign not far away.
He approaches the sign and reads it, noticing “Rua Ferrilhada” written on it.
“So my street is Ferrilhada... right, what's my house number?” He goes back to his house and looks for the number, and finds it stuck to the wall, an iron number “4”.
“Now I know my address, that's wonderful... well, I'm going to walk down the street a bit more and familiarize myself” he then returns to his exploration of Rua Ferrilhada.
It's a simple street with little dirt, but it's very busy, there are people walking up and down it all the time, the streetlamps are out, and the sun is shining above everyone, but it's not that hot.
Lucian soon arrives at a new location, which looks more disheveled and dirty, where the streets are bumpy and there aren't many people walking around, but rather sleeping on the streets, especially in the narrower alleys.
Lucian is startled by the scene he sees: how did this happen? What is this place? He then notices a sign, approaches it and reads “Porto Velho” and a memory enters his mind.
Porto Velho is a place where people in precarious situations are more likely to end up living, where here, people sleep on the streets, work every day to get meager coins, and suffer from hunger and thirst. Then there's “Porto Ferro”, where people with average economic stability live, which is also where Lucian, Mary and Evelyn live, and the street they live on, Rua Ferrilhada, is called Ferrilhada because it's the street closest to Porto Velho, as well as being the well-known site of the Wuthering Heights Cathedral and the Moonlight Lady. And lastly we have “Puerto Rico” where people with great economic stability usually live, being a place of wealthy people and other cathedrals of the Wuthering Heights Church and the Moonlight Lady, the difference between Porto Ferro and Puerto Rico is how fabulous and beautiful each one is.
He soon feels sad about the situation in Porto Velho, because he knows he can't do anything to help them apart from giving alms.
Suddenly, someone tugs lightly at his pants, and he turns to see who it is.
A child with some bandages and disheveled hair, he wears very simple and torn clothes, he says in a hoarse voice, his lips dry from not drinking water for so long... Sir... do you have some money for me?” he says while continuing to hold Lucian's pants.
Lucian searches his pockets for money, but finds nothing, and then he feels sad and sighs... I'm sorry... I don't have any...” The boy, hearing these words, walks away and returns to an alleyway, and they notice him lying down next to five other children and a man, who, like him, are wearing dirty, torn clothes.
Lucian sighs and decides to return to Rua Ferrilhada, then turns around and walks back to his house.
As soon as he arrives, he notices movement coming from his house, a yellow-walled house with two windows at the front and a slightly torn curtain at each window.
He enters the house and observes where he was seeing the movement, it was coming from the kitchen.
He soon sees two girls, one taller, a little shorter than Lucian, with slightly wavy brunette hair and dark blue eyes, wearing a pink dress with a white apron over it, this is Mary, the eldest of the brothers.
The other girl, like Lucian, has wine-colored red hair and brown eyes like him, only lighter than Lucian's. She wears a very light blue dress with some white details, this is Evelyn, the youngest of the brothers.
This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.
The two were chatting while they ate their bread and cheese and drank their goat's milk.
Their attention returns to Lucian who has just opened the door, and Mary smiles at him. “Good morning Lucian, what were you doing out at this hour?” she says doubtfully, but keeps a pleasant smile.
Lucian smiles back and takes a seat at the table next to Evelyn. “I was just out for a walk, the wind was nice out there.” As he settles back in his chair, he looks at Evelyn. “Good morning Eve, did you sleep well?” he says.
-I did, Lucian- she said as she put the bread in her mouth and ate.
-“After all, Mary, I've already eaten, you don't have to prepare it for me,” said Lucian to Mary, who nodded and sat down at the table.
Lucian remained silent as he observed the conversation between the two, he wanted to find out more about them, but if he asked things that might be obvious to the real Lucian, the two would probably find it strange, so he decided to remain silent.
Mary soon started the conversation - So Eve, how's school going? I heard you got into trouble, we got a letter from your principal - she frowns slightly as she looks at Evelyn.
Evelyn almost chokes on her bread - How fast! How could he deliver the letter so quickly?” she says indignantly, and then realizes that she has given herself away.
-"Eve... what have you done? The letter only specified that you'd been expelled from class.
-Ok... I skipped class in the bathroom to build things...
-Again Eve? I know you want to become a blacksmith, but you have to study at school first before you can really focus on that. If you want to build or manufacture something at school, wait until it's over and you can do it here at home, silly.
-Right Mary... when are you going to open your sewing store anyway? You always say you want to raise money for it.
-When your brother and I get more money, I'll build my store.
-You're a great seamstress, you always repair our clothes so they don't get torn.
Lucian soon looks at his own clothes, and notices some stitching marks made to fix some torn parts, it's quality, probably because of the economic state the family is in, she must not have very good sewing items, but if she gets some better sewing items the results could be splendid. She's very skilled.
Conversation comes and goes, they both have simple conversations, about Evelyn, telling her about her day at school yesterday and Mary talking about economic matters, which impressively interests Evelyn, even though it's a subject that a 15-year-old teenager probably wouldn't be interested in.
After that, Mary gets up and says - Evelyn, let's go, you've got class - she says as she takes Evelyn's empty plate of food and piles it on top of hers, then goes to the sink and washes the dishes.
Evelyn runs off to get ready, and Lucian continues to sit there quietly.
Mary noticed Lucian's restlessness, and approached him - Lucian, is everything all right? You didn't say much today - she said, poking his arm in a silly way to attract his attention.
Lucian smiles at her in a forced way, but she doesn't notice his forced smile, and says - It's okay Mary, I'm just worried about a friend of mine, he seems to be having a bad time - he says, referring to this “friend”, Josh.
Mary smiles at him kindly, she has a unique and comfortable atmosphere around her, it's comfortable to sit next to her and talk to Mary- All right then Lucian, let's drop our sister off at school? we need to be good brothers, even though we have to go to work right away- Just as she says this, Evelyn appears, already dressed, now in a black dress with a white collar, brown women's shoes and long white socks- I'm ready- she says as she checks a gray one-strap backpack.
The three siblings soon left the house together, and they had a medium walk to Evelyn's school, which was a little far away, but not that far, it was about a 12-minute walk.
Evelyn says goodbye with a short hug to her two brothers, and then waves her hand as she enters the school, which has cube-shaped walls that run the length of the school, and the school was very simple... it looked like a prison, but nothing different from the ordinary world.
Soon after, Lucian and Mary are walking together, the two of them having conversations on the way to their jobs, Lucian feeling that he is getting a little closer to his sisters, but that he needs to improve more in this regard.
Mary soon says goodbye as she arrives in front of her place of work, which is a simple structure made of reddish wood and stone, with a wooden sign above the two entrance doors reading “Bar da Diversão” (Fun Bar) - this is the restaurant where her sister, Mary, works.
He nods as he watches her go to work, then moves a little away from the restaurant, then leans against a wall of a house and starts to remember his goal again.
“Okay... I now need to go to Durf Watson's house, which is at 7 Nurston St. I need to see how Durf is and ask about Annie and Josh, and then ask about the strange object that the four of them had seen before I transmigrated. Ready!” He then looks around the busy street around him, looking for something that will help him get to No. 7 Nurston Street.
He then finds a large wooden plaque that is staked into the ground by two wooden legs.
He approaches it and finds its location on the large map showing the Porto Ferro area, where there was an arrow pointing to the location of the sign he was currently standing at, and then he finally finds the place he wants to visit.
He spends 4 minutes standing in front of the sign, memorizing the path he must cross to get to Durf's house, and then he finally moves and makes his way to Nurston Street.
After not long, 6 minutes, he arrives in front of Nurston Street, he looks at the number of each house and then he finds house no. 7.
He then knocks on the door calmly and without force. “Anyone home?” he asks with a louder tone in his voice.
After a few minutes... nothing... nothing was heard from inside the house, no voices, no footsteps, nothing.
“Maybe he's asleep, it's still early, or he's already gone to work, but I'll try again” He knocked on the door again. Anyone? Durf?” he says in a louder voice than before... but again nothing.
He sighs and realizes that maybe he's out of the house.
Just as he was about to turn around, he suddenly steps on something strange that appeared to be fragile, because when he stepped on it, it felt like it had been crushed, a strange sensation that gave him goosebumps.
He looked down to see what he had stepped on. A finger... a dark-colored little finger was on the ground, crushed where a pool of blood was slowly spreading, it was small, the finger had been damaged by Lucian stepping on it.
Lucian is startled to see the finger and takes a step backwards, but stumbles and slams into the door, where it strangely opens as the impact of Lucian's back hits the door and pushes it inwards.
He was still disgusted by the scene he had just seen, but as he looked inside Durf's house to avoid the sight of a smashed finger, he was even more frightened than before.
A woman was on the floor with her belly turned upwards, with a knife stuck in her, where the blood was already dried on her white dress stained red, she had white skin and black hair together with brown but dead eyes.
Next to her, there was another person, a dark man with short curly hair, who was wearing a black dress shirt and a white bow tie, but his situation was sad, he was holding a knife and his neck had a deep cut with dried blood, which stained his black dress shirt red near the collar.
Lucian almost vomited at the sight of this scene, but managed to hold it in, he felt incredibly bad about it, but before he could think better of the moment, someone poked him on the shoulder, which startled him.
He turns around abruptly and sees a woman with very light blonde hair and emerald green eyes, she is wearing a white dress shirt with the sleeves pulled up, pants with straps that are attached to her shoulder, and a pair of black shoes.
-“Who are you?” says the girl in a delicate voice, but at the same time with a hint of menace.
The girl removes her hand from Lucian's shoulder and slowly reaches into his right trouser pocket, her emerald green eyes becoming frightening to Lucian. She pulls out a pair of throwing knives from her pockets and holds them close to her face, leaving a gap in the middle between the two knives, as she watches Lucian intently -Answer now... or else.
She points the throwing knives with a swift movement towards Lucian's face - I won't hesitate to kill him.
