Into the rabbithole

Into the rabbithole

I enter the auxiliary staircase room and the first thing I notice is that it goes really deep down. The stairs are basic metal grates spaced evenly for a human to use them, and the room is wide as both of the stairs plus the railing in the middle. The walls are made from concrete, looks like they are supporting walls, and are painted in forest green with white paint marking which level this is.

I start my long descent down the stairs. It looks like the second level is not far down, but there are more levels than that. I’d assume that the lower levels are where I should look, but I must leave no stone unturned, even if it takes a long time. After a minute I reach level 02.

Level 02 seems to start the same as the previous one, with the main corridor leading from the elevator. This time, the biggest room seems to be the warehouse, which is currently open and displays large amounts of crates and what appear to be empty glass tanks. This level seems to have less guards than the previous and there are researchers here.

I get to the intersection which branches out to two corridors, like on the first level. To my right are the toilets and across is the bathroom. There is no mess hall nor the janitors room on this level. In the other corridor all I see are just rows of offices. The offices have large glass windows stretching from floor to ceiling and they have vents on the ceiling.

All the ceilings in the compound seem to be suspended and have those standard panels which can be removed. The lights are also just large panels but I presume they are led and just have diffusers in the square shape. The walls are mostly out of concrete but there are some, usually smaller, walls which are made out of plaster. The floor is made out of metal grate separated from the concrete below by a few centimeters of air. There are pipes down there, and near the bathroom I could see some water. I could also see some drains here and there, but that’s probably for when the whole site floods.

While I was looking around, a researcher approached me and asked me if I needed something. I replied that everything is alright and I was just looking around. That was a close call, I must be more alert next time.

I start looking around the warehouse looking for any notable material. I focus mainly on the empty tanks. The tanks are 3 meters tall, and are around a meter and a half wide. They look like they could fit a massive person inside, and the glass looks like it could withstand a tank shell. I also notice many valves and bumps designed to fit various tubes and hoses both from the outside but also from the inside too.

After inspecting the tanks, I move on to crates. There are no crates of note around, with most of them being for food, supplies, weapons and building materials. There are some where it doesn’t say but I can’t really open anything. I take a photo of them and the tanks so I can send it to HQ after.

I head back to the auxiliary stairs room and continue my descent.

----------------------------------------

It reads Level 04 and there is already a bulkhead door. Thankfully the door is open and I pass through. This level is done in a seemingly different style to the upper levels. The walls have tiles which come to around a meter in height and there are alarms scattered here and there, the presence of security cameras doesn’t decrease. The corridors have more vent openings on the ceiling. Under the floor there are even more pipes than on the upper levels and the grate seems to be thicker.

I also spot rails integrated to the floor and grates being separated by them. It seems that they are transporting something heavy down here. The corridors aren’t the usual T shape, but are in the L shape. Near the elevator and the staircase there is only one room, and that is the smaller storeroom. Inside the storeroom there are supplies for Internal Security. It’s about time I take off this military uniform and slip into something more appropriate.

After dressing in the security uniform I continue down the hallway. The first thing that comes into my sight is the 3 meter wide and 1 meter tall security office window. There is a guard there and I wave to him. He waves back and I just continue. The next thing that I see is the barracks for Internal Security and the armory next to that. As I already have a weapon, I just take more ammo from there and continue.

Looking around, the corridor seems empty in this area. There is nothing but the security block and the rails on the ground. I continue walking through the corridor for a kilometer more and then I stumble upon a turned on force field gate. It is a large red EM field which stretches from floor to ceiling and is segmented into 2 sections. First section is a large rectangle which is used for blocking the rails, and the second section is a bulkhead door which is locked.

Looking around me, there is another security office, but there is no one there. I look through the window and see a large lever which is used for turning off the force field and a smaller button used for unlocking the door. There seems to be a vent on the other side of the gate.

I realized that there is no other way across so I get back to the armory. Once there, I climb on one of the shelves and I pry open the ceiling vent. I get inside and proceed to crawl my way back to that corridor. The vents are made out of metal and I try to make less noise so I crawl slower. I notice that there are a lot of branchings for the vents and that there are frequent fans blocking my way.

After a lot of detouring and crawling, I finally reach my desired vent. I start unscrewing this one as well, but I hear that there is someone walking in the corridor. I soon hear the sounds of a cart moving. It looks like they are moving something to the elevator. I quickly grab my camera and wait for them to pass below me so I can see what they are carrying.

Soon they pass beneath and I see the cart slowly driving along the rails. It is mostly just a platform made out of diamond plate with the batteries and electromotors in the front, propelling the thing. On the platform was something rather unnerving. Over a dozen human sized body bags. Filled. They looked like a dozen ruffians were brought to their end, judging by the sizes.

I take a photo and wait patiently until they advance far enough. Then, when I hear the doors of the elevator open, I pry open the vent. I fall down about 5 meters and look around to see if anybody spotted me. Nobody did. Looks like the corridor continues to a locked room, where the rails end, and two auxiliary rooms. I first check the auxiliary rooms.

The room on the right is a storeroom. Inside there is medical equipment and supplies. There are hazmat suits suspended on a rack too. In one corner, there is a biohazard waste container which looks to be full.

In the other room, there are toilets and showers. At the floor tiles of the showers I can see some blood, which was probably washed after whatever they did back there. I can only guess that the locked room is some sort of operating room. But why would they lock it? And who are they operating on?

After inspecting the auxiliary rooms, I head to the locked room. There is no side bulkhead nor a door, so I will have to figure out how to open up the large rolling door. There is what appears to be a keycard reader to the side and a bright red glowing light above the door signaling that it is locked. I remember that I got a keycard from the guard I killed outside so I quickly grab it and push it through the reader. The light changes color from bright red to bright green. I then get to the center and start opening the door with the handles on the floor.

The door opens to about a meter and a half in height and I enter the dark room.
