School - Elementary School is disappointing

School Year 1 - One week before the first day

Yes, yes, it's almost time. We all turned ten a little while ago and soon we're going to start schooling. In case I haven't mentioned it before - school is for reading, writing, math and natural studies at our age, though there are other subjects we can choose. Like magic.

Don't misunderstand, but...what I have seen of magic so far has not been all that promising. It's full of weird misnderstandings the way they teach it here! Just the word 'elemental affinity' is enough to tell me that this is the absolute backwoods hillbilly home of lower class hedge witches trying to sound pompuous. Because, point one, fire is not an element, it's a process. Point two, you don't really control any elements at all with this magic, so unlike metal magic for example, or spirit magic, the name is totally misleading in the case of 'elemental magic'. What elemtal magic controls is simply motion. It's telekinetic practice. Speed something up, let it rub together and you get fire. Make it stop, icy coldness. As for the water and earth aspects of the magic...please, you just use your telekinetic control to move water or earth, or air or your favorite teddy bear if you want. It has absolutely no connection at all to any type of element! Total rubbish people are spouting around here...

By the way, I am a fairly proficient telekinetic. Telekinesis has nothing to do with any sort of power, it's simply control and willpower that influence your surroundings. Certainly no imaginary mana is involved! Whoever invented that idea deserves to be hit with a stick. That silly idea has been around as long as that elemental magic nonsense.

Ahem.

I'm a little bit touchy about the topic, I admit that much. But why would people offer this stupid subject as something first graders can choose to study? Now Lily is all hung up on it, just because it sounds good...I don't want to take this stupid 'elemental magic'...

Unfortunately when I suggested the Runt should go with her to that idiotic lesson they both got angry at me. And I honestly don't know why! It's not my fault the school is being idiotic about magic education or that my obedient lackey took the bait.

School Year 1 - first day

Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions.

Have I ever mentioned what we look like? Well, if I did it was when we were younger so it might be time for a proper description. First of all, we are cute the way all healthy, clean young girls with pretty dresses and bows in their long, glossy hair are cute. We're not great beauties and not ugly either. The Runt is really pudgy while I admit that I may have overdone my diet a bit so I'm a tiny little bit bony, all ellbows and knees. Lily is pretty normal and fit. Our hair is dark brown, nearly black, our eyes are a somewhat lighter color and almond shaped. Milk coffee colored skin makes us look nice and healthy and the only really defining dacial feature we have is a rather pointy chin.

In other words, standing around in the schoolyard along with a dozen other children everybody looked pretty similar. Everybody had dark hair and eyes as well as brown skin, all had about the same height and all children were dressed in blue uniforms, girls in dresses and boys in pants and vests. Everybody had long hair and each child had a leather bag with them.

To be honest, I'm going to be surprised if our teacher can tell us apart at all. Except maybe the Runt. She's rather noticeable, especially given the fact that she's already munching her sweets and managed to get blue frosting all over her face and hands.

Ah, I'll take that back. By the time we sat down in our classroom to wait for our teacher to arrive several other kids followed her example and about half have colorful sticky decorations around their mouths.

The teacher was an excited! young woman who started playing games for us to get to know each other. There was absolutely nothing she taught us that day. And, it being the first day, we were let go two hours later. I can't belive this is supposed to be a real school. But then, the ten year olds we are now are about the same as five year old human children. What did I expect? Maybe Lily is a tad abnormal because she always follows me around. And even the Runt could count as somewhat exceptional...

Maybe we're not really normal children and I had more influence on my sisters than I realized. But then, after some of the idiotic things we've done these last few years...I doubt anyone would think we're mature.
