The D.O.

They had been on the road for about eleven minutes now. Jonah's eyes were constantly focussed on the lights and the people on the streets they passed. It was a Saturday night, so students from colleges and universities nearby were going out drinking and partying. The blinding lights and mix of human desire encapsulated Jonah to the point he started drooling in deep focus. A mix of thoughts swirling his head including what that monster was, why his father had to die, were his relatives okay?

"Oi. You good back there?" The man asked.

Jonah snapped back and wiped the drool from his mouth with his sleeve. "I'm okay. Just thinking."

"Don't lose your wits just yet."

The man continued to drive until they reached an office building downtown which was ten stories high. They both got out of the vehicle, Jonah looking up at the building in front of him.

"This is one of our buildings. I work here with a bunch of others and the manager of this sector. When we go in, make sure to not talk too much until you're with the manager."

Jonah nodded and entered with the man. They went through the doors and saw an old man reading a newspaper at the reception.

"Hey Larry. You got my locker key?" The man asked.

"Yep. I'm assuming that's Jonah Kekel?" The receptionist said while handing the keys to the man.

"He sure is. We're gonna go and meet with the manager now. Take care."

They both went to the lift and went inside, heading to the top floor. They got out once they reached it and headed for the manager's office. A man wearing a tracksuit and cap left the manager's office and saw Jonah and the other man at his side.

"Yo! Lucky. Is that Kekel?" The man asked.

Jonah felt a hand touch his shoulder and looked around to see the man with the cap standing behind him. "Yo. I'm david!" He said gleefully.

Jonah jumped and stepped back a bit, looking at David in suspicion.

"Don't do that David." The man next to

"Can't help it. I like to mess with newbies." David shrugged with a smirk.

"What did you just do?" Jonah asked.

"No need to tell you just yet." David grinned.

David went into the elevator behind them and waved goodbye. They continued to the managers office and entered. The room was rather big. It had two portraits of ships behind the desk and chair, there were two filing cabinets on either side of the room and a chair sat in front of the desk. Behind the desk there was a woman with long blond hair typing away at her computer. She looked up and saw both the man and Jonah.

"Oh Luke. It seems you've brought Mr Kekel as I requested." She spoke in a soft undertone and a polite smile.

"Yes. Shall I leave you too alone?" Luke responded.

"Please."

Luke closed the door and left Jonah alone with the manager. "Come. Sit down Mr Kekel."

Jonah awkwardly sat down in the chair, sat up straight and looked the manager in the eye.

"Firstly, I'm very sorry for your loss Mr Kekel. I would imagine you and your father were very close. My name is Charlotte Terrors, the Manager of this branch of the Detective Organisation, D.O. for short." She stood up and walked around her table. "I assume you want to hear why your father was killed by monsters? Surely you aren't looking for revenge?"

"I don't want anything like revenge, or something stupid like that. My dad didn't raise me that way."

She was now intrigued. She had assumed that Luke was bringing him here because he was hell bent on getting revenge for his father. "Why are you here then?" She asked.

"I want to know what these monsters are before they fuck up my life. It was all good until the insane property damage they did on my apartment complex. So I want to find a way to stop them before anything goes worse for me."

Charlotte laughed and went back to her seat. "So you're joining the D.O. out of pure spite and selfishness?"

"Joining? First off, do you pay well?" He scoffed.

"The Detective Organisation is a large group across the world. Recognized by each government, but we aren't well known by the public. Of course we pay well."

"Starting salary?" He asked.

"Forty thousand a year I think." She said casually.

Jonah was stunned. The starting salary was pretty amazing. But the starting salary wasn't the only thing he wanted. Sure he wanted to find out the history of these creatures, but he also wanted to find out what ground breaking thing his father discovered to make him such a huge target. If this company was recognized by the governments in the world, then it had to be pretty ground breaking for sure. There was also a slight bit of resentment towards the monsters, who wouldn't feel angry at the murderers of their father. Maybe he really did want revenge as well.

"How do I sign up?"

"You sign up after the test."

Jonah was confused. "A test? I'm not every good at tests."

"This isn't a normal test Mr Kekel. It takes place once a year. The next is in four months I presume. I'll ask Luke to help and get you ready for it since you're already so behind."

"Behind?" Jonah thought, what did she mean by behind?

"Well. I've loved our little chat Mr Kekel. I think Luke is still here so hitch a ride with him to a hotel. Take this with you too." She handed Jonah a small brown slip of paper with markings on it. "It's a sort of protection charm so that no monsters come to kill you."

He left the room after shaking her hand and went to where Luke was. "She said we have to stay at a hotel."

"Besides the hotel, you have plans on working here?" Luke asked.

"It'll probably be part time since I want to at least occupy myself with school or something. Get my mind off of things." Jonah replied.

"If you aren't too sure about this job, I'll still teach you how to fight off monsters since you're a target and all."

Jonah nodded, "I don't wanna die too early."

They went into the elevator and went down, the manager watching from the glass walls in her room.
