Prologue: Know Yer Enemy

Prologue: Know Yer Enemy

I'm not one to tell a man bout his business. Way I figure it, the ways of a man are tween him and his conscience. Or his god. If you believe in that sort of thing.

I used to believe in something. A long time ago. But that was before they came. They changed all that. After nine months of lyin' in rat turds, foul smelling sewage, and bugs. You start to see things a bit different.

People used to say when the aliens came to Earth, they'd be smarter, faster, and stronger. They weren't lying. They are definitely all of the above. We didn't stand a chance. Now, I don't know if being cunning is a whole other thing. But, they were that too! They used our own minds. Our own hatreds. Our own shortcomings and shortsightedness to do us in. And, they did it in the most innocent way. An observer would say: 'They played the game pretty straight'. We never saw it coming.

Stolen story; please report.

Well, the sun's goin' down now. Not much light to finish writing this letter. I'll have to stop for a bit, and hope that the sun catches me again on this side of life.

If you should find this letter, and I've gone the way of all men, please find my uncle (Simon Titus Ringgold) and deliver it to him. At the beginning of the invasion, he was living in Charleston, SC. He's the only family I know of remaining.

Signed,

Jamie Henry Ringgold. (Sometime in January of 2029)
