DENNIS, THE RAT LICH
CHAPTER 21: HURGIN

CHAPTER 21: HURGIN

The hurgin is a delicacy brought by the otherworlders. It is tens of thousands years old and a surprisingly famous delicacy in the Necra Mazoul. It is a delicious layered meat cake covered with a generous layer of a substance called ‘mayonaisse’ and is garnished with mustard frosting. The cake typically ages and ferments for three days and three nights in a cold damp environment as it is dusted with a special fungus that keeps it from spoiling. It is said one adapts to the chewy texture the more it is eaten, releasing the flavors that are soaked into the meat by the ‘mayonaisse’.

The ‘mayonaisse’ is a thick, cold, and creamy sauce that originates from a land called Nipon. It is made by emulsifying oil, egg yolk, and an acid, typically either cockatrice stomach acid or fire lemons. However there are many variants to the recipe, causing a huge debate to the proper way of producing ‘mayonaisse’. It’s color varies from near-white to pale yellow, and it’s texture from a light airy cream to a thick gel.

The frosting is from a plant called mustard. A plant that came from an otherworlder’s feces and was first grown by druids for it’s decorative purposes. The seeds are taken and ground and added to a mixture of various powders, vinegar, and cockatrice stomach acid to form a thick, pungent, and slightly bitter yellow sauce that is now famous for birthday parties. It pairs well with meat and is usually offered to an ancestor’s grave, or to the elderly in hospices as a sign of respect.

Despite the hurgin being consumed by most countries, predominantly of the ratkin, batkin, roachkin, flykin, and almost all of the goblinoid population, it is unloved by most otherworlders and is considered taboo to consume such. It is said to diverge from the original purpose of the food, but many disagree on this and have settled on the theory that it is a ploy to divide the relationship of otherworlders and most of the population.

Many cults are known to have been formed with the explicit purpose of destroying the hurgin, yet it is outlawed by all government authorities. To this day, hunts are still rampant in exterminating such cults. Thus creating one of the four permanent quests posted in all adventurer guilds, the anti-hurgin cult extermination quests.

To this day the formation of the hurgin is a symbol of peace and prosperity, while being a grim reminder of the lives lost in the ‘Mayonaisse’ wars. Several memorials are lit up yearly in celebration of the peace achieved in the conflict, and it is now considered a ceremony for otherworlders to protect those who consume the hurgin on this day.

Dennis has finished four plates of the hurgin in bar of the inn they resided in. He has taken the face of pure bliss as the pungent aroma wafted through the air. Judith and Kathzka however, were wearing the ceremonial masks of protection worn by otherworlders.

Upon smelling the dish, many patrons have flocked to the establishment, quickly purchasing the dish and consuming the meatcake whole. Droves of individuals have formed lines that spun across the inn’s outer walls and a numbering cue had to be established. This has forced Kathzka to call upon her children to assist in the endeavor. Due to her serving the dish, many establishments have also done the same in an effort to piggyback in the frenzy it has caused. This made the aroma spread in all of korilstadt as the hurgin is served in all it’s corners.

Due to the influx of new adventurers from other worlds, coupled with the recent hurgin frenzy, many have quarantined themselves and has led to the cessation of most traffic in the republic. Despite the wealth flowing in, kathzka has regretted serving the hurgin as the pungent scent has filled the very atmosphere, and colored the sky with a slight yellow tint due to the shear amount of hurgin being served.

The hurgin festival or hurgin plague, as the locals have called it, has led most adventurers to seek refuge in the dungeon towers by taking most quests. This in turn has caused the influx of the ingredients to make the hurgin, which causes people to consume more hurgin, which causes the demand for more hurgin, effectively making a hurgin feedback loop and the overall decrease in the republics defenses.

Adding onto this, many humans, elves, dwarves, and several other races have temporarily left korilstadt only to be replaced by a different set of races drawn in by the news of a hurgin festival. After this incident, many laws would be established to regulate the consumption of the hurgin along with facilities made to take in the safety of it’s consumption. Many rebellions will be stoked by this proclamation as it is seen as an attempt to infringe upon the right of most people, ensuring another set of factions splintering and forming their own worlds.

She has single-handedly caused cascade of events that resulted in the cessation of activity within the city and the inevitable hurgin inflation in several planets. Yet unbeknownst to her, she has sparked the flames of a new ‘Mayonaisse’ war on the horizon.

“Mmmhm sho ghood” Dennis said, momentarily abandoning his worries by ingesting a slice pungent meat cake. He was carrying dishes left and right while cleaning the leftovers after licking the utensils clean. He dumped the dishes in an area where he summoned a team of water elementals via spellstone.

This all started when he kept sobbing in the inn, which made Kathzka roll her eyes and served a slice of hurgin, a dish that famously comforted ratkins. After that several people flowed in by the word of hurgin being served, then more, and more, and more.

Judith was now working as a cook along with katzka’s children as they attempted to feed the hungry flood of people.

“Yes thank you that would be two gold coins”“Yes please hold on for a moment””Judith, we got five in table four, eight in table six, and a supreme meal in table eighteen in the second floor. Go go go!”

“Yes ma’am!” Judith and several others yelled from the kitchen. Several temporary workers who couldn’t pay their tab were enlisted into the workforce directly under Judith and Kathzka’s children.

Kathzka was in the zone. She held a flaming sword while she delegated things to her staff. She opened the spatial enchantment under her table. The inn rumbled as stairs another floor appeared atop the last one. She has done this several times as she manned several counters that popped out of nowhere, quickly outpacing her staff despite being pregnant.

Completely under control as she worked her magic managing everything in the inn. Despite looking small from the outside, her in was big, really big, designed to temporarily hold a small army big. She invested in it and slowly became the leading inn in the republic. With her years managing the guild of inns and eateries, of which she was still the head of after several failed coups, she juggled several teams ordering them around.

“Dennis send these stack of quests to the adventurer guild and get the ingredients from my supplier!”

“Yes ma’am!” Dennis made a salute as he took the stack of papers and bolted out of the inn.

He ran through several lines, squeezing in and out of the flood of bodies.

“Excuse me””Pardom me””Coming through””Aaah!”

Several establishments were also having their own lines as they attempted to mimic the success of Kathzka’s inn. The hurgin was considered a religious dish by some religions, so many have warped to korilstadt after hearing of the news.

Dennis dove into an alley, navigating the winding passages till he saw a metal door with a red light.

He brushed his robe and made the knock he was taught earlier this day.

A metal slit opened and a pair of eyes glared menacingly at him. A hoarse voice spoke, it was as if whoever was behind the door smoked since birth.

“There once was a woman from krue..”

Dennis gulped as he prepared to say the next words.

“Who filled her vagina with glue”

The man nodded then continued, by far the easiest part.

“A drought made it harder with time”

“To piss, but she’s jailed for a crime”

“She shot the hardened block in a hole”

Dennis gulped, he was close to finishing it.

“Then she drank from the...toilet bowl!”

The man nodded and opened the door. What Dennis saw was of course.

Another door.

This time it had a cavity in the shape of an oyster and a pearl on top. It had two key holes right in the middle. Dennis pulled out the key that Kathzka gave him.

The key was a five fingered hand, with the middle finger and the ring finger pointing in the direction of the wrist. Each finger had sharp red claws, except the aforementioned. He shoved the key in and said the spell phrase.

“Qu-Eef!” The ancient spellword denoting primal wind magic.

The metal door shook as gears spun from the flowing tempest released by the key. The metal bent and folded in an unearthly scene as several pieces peeled and shaped itself into another door, but this time it had a doorknob encrusted in gems and fine gold.

Dennis stepped inside to see the suppliers that Kathzka said would give him the ‘Mayonaisse’. The cult of the white dawn.

He quickly closed the door and entered the carpeted floors, as five veiled figures figures wearing white robes confronted him. He bowed in reverence of their noble mission. It was dark, but there was a glow that came from the figures as they circled him.

“Welcome child, lift your head. As we have promised, we shall provide the holy sauce.” They moved their cloak to show a barrel just behind them.

Dennis took out a small box and handed it to the figure, both knees still pressed on the floor.

They took it and the five figures opened it.

“Aah! So the inn keeper has finally acquired it. After years of ”

The figure held the intricately designed jug filled with patterns of clouds and vines.

Everflowing jug of holy oil

Artifact, Mythical, Sacred

Allows one to do the following:

* Infinitely produce oil of any type and of any purity by pouring it

* Manipulate all oil and fats from a 10 meter radius sphere

* Consecrate any oil produced by it

“Never shall my kind go hungry, never shall they need to seek for warmth. I will provide it.” – Saint Tros, patron of weight gain

They all teared up as wet stains seeped through their veils. Many of them sobbed and wailed as the treasure they have searched for a long time has finally returned to them.

“Praise be!”

“Praise be!”

“Glory to the white dawn!”

The five individuals were clamoring, before being quieted down by the tallest one.

“Ahem”

“Very well, she will receive a lifetimes worth of ‘Mayonaisse’ and a decade’s worth in mustard paste.”

The five figures bowed.

“We thank you child, please send our deepest gratitude to the innkeeper. May the white dawn shine a path for you.”

With the farewells done, Dennis got up and was escorted out of the area and found himself back to the main road.

He took out the stack of quests.

“Okay next up the Adventurers guild.”
