Synopsis

Suzi, mother of 3 adult children, Maeve, Reed, and Rio, left her husband of 25 years, Aiden, over two years ago to break into her career of choice as a Mortician and Funeral Director in a city that offered more culture and opportunity for a woman with pink hair and tattoos.  While she has found success, she still struggles with the guilt that plagues her over leaving her family behind.  She seeks a therapist to address her anxiety, depression, and personality disorders, only to decide that he is no longer helping her. She is a witness to a violent crime involving her therapist, which reconnects her and Aiden and has also awoken a primal new personality within her.  Suzi is attacked by a Sleep Paralysis Demon when Judas, her newest persona, takes over and 'captures' it within her head.  She discovers she can speak a demonic language and begins to try to solve the murder/disappearance of Dr. Adamson.  The fact that her consciousness can now see the new entity and that it refers to itself as a demon leads Suzi down a rabbit hole of an existential crisis, where she turns to a priest friend who tries to ease her mind but believes her 'demon' is a result of trauma. Suzi returns to work, where she mingles with a multitude of other characters: an independently wealthy fellow mortician who is obsessed with her; a young, naïve fledgling intern whom she has taken under her wing; and a mourning family whose departed family member has left her his estate and attacks her at the funeral home, putting her career at risk. Suzi also describes many embalming and death industry processes, particularly using a new 3D printing reconstruction method.   After another incident leaves her near death, and in another hospital bed, Suzi discovers she can pass her personalities to others with weaker wills, which results in an exciting night of with a promiscuous nurse that takes on Annie, Suzi's 'lust' personality.  Aiden returns to her apartment only to be kidnapped because of the doctor's phone, and her dog is shot and left for dead.  Suzi returns home to find her dog and seeks help from her step-brother and landlord, Ricky, who happens to have a suspicious past and connections to a para-military team in whom Suzi reluctantly gets involved, which also happens to include Detective Wilson from the Adamson case. They determine that a John Doe found beaten to death in a park is Aiden, who was revived but is now in a coma, and it could still go either way.  Of course, guilt sets in as she realizes that her dog's injuries and her husband being on his deathbed are all due to her not turning the phone over when she should have.  She rallies Aiden's family and her kids, sans Maeve, who will still not speak with her, to 'be there' should things go wrong with Aiden. Suzi meets an angel, Kariel, who tries to help and provide guidance on her purpose, where she fits within the battle between Heaven and Hell, and what angels can do for her.  She investigates the case with Detective Wilson and learns that there are holy and infernal items in the world that she can use, but before she realizes she can use them, all but two are taken away.  Using said items, each takes its toll on the users, so a balance must be maintained, and she learns the balance might be costly.  One of these devices, created and imbued with the spirit of another angel, tests her to know herself, not to fear, and to fight self-doubt, which has plagued her for years. She obsesses over finding the demons that hurt her dog and husband, but finding them and the battle to capture them cost her more than she knew she would have to pay, losing a couple of her friends in more than one way.
