Chapter 7 - The First Level

Chapter 7 - The First Level

After several months on his new schedule, it was truly beginning to wear on him. He didn’t want to admit it, but it was more than he could handle.

But he had improved a lot, so it was about time that he could go back to his original two-hour schedule.

He had done some quick calculations to check, and now he was only wasting a fifth of his practice time by getting into the right state. Because his concentration had improved so much, he was almost getting two experience points per day. That was good, considering the theoretical max was one for every two hours spent.

But was he on target to reach his goal? He pulled up the status panel and saw that his experience had reached 51 out of 100.

Halfway there, huh…

It was neither bad nor good. By now he had spent two months on this, so he was over halfway to the 100 day mark. If he slowed down to two hours a day, he would only get around 1 experience point per day. With the time left, it wasn’t quite enough. But missing the target was fine, as long as it wasn’t by too much.

Although he looked forward to awakening his bloodlines, he could afford to ease up on the training and take it slow for a bit.

Which is exactly what Kaden did. For the next few weeks, he spent most of his time relaxing, just enjoying the lack of responsibility and taking his time.

He spent most of his days outside, either staring at the sky, or hanging out with Godfrey and Amy.

The two of them often trained together, and Kaden enjoyed watching whenever possible. It was nice to get an idea of the skill level of the younger generation.

Though he had been surprised to see that neither of them used a spear like their father. Amy used some sort of tiny bow, while Godfrey wielded a sword and shield.

Their weapon choices also meant that Kaden never got to see them spar with each other. It was disappointing, as he would’ve liked to see them fight, so he could get a proper idea of their abilities.

In all that time, he hadn’t seen his mother even once. He had overheard some of the wives gossip about her seeing some sort of doctor, but he didn’t know what about. However, the funny looks they shot him were enough for him to tell that something wasn’t right.

But as the experience bar ticked ever closer to the end, he put it out of his mind. They could gossip about what they wanted, he had more important things to take care of.

The excitement was getting to him, and he wanted to finish as soon as possible, even ramping up his training just out of impatience.

And precisely 52 days after the schedule change, it finally happened.

After skimming both of the notifications, Kaden felt something happening within his body.

His heart stirred, violently pounding and sending his blood rushing through him. It was euphoric like nothing else, like pure power was running through him.

But his heart only started pounding even harder and faster, roaring like the beat of a war drum. His veins were threatening to burst from the chaotic streams of blood being pumped through it.

The back of his head struck the floorboards, and he felt muddleheaded, unaware of how it had even happened. Dark spots appeared in his vision, and his conciousness started slipping.

He started feeling panicky, wondering if there was something wrong with him. Struggling to open his mouth, he tried to scream, but nothing came out.

A blood vessel in his left eye burst, and blood flowed out, blocking his vision. Was he going to die here without even knowing why? He spat at the thought.

His hands clawed against the floor as he tried to turn himself over.

There was a burst and soon his other eye began to fill with blood as the dark spots in his vision spread inward. He fought to stay conscious, not letting himself be claimed by that dark realm. His hands still dug against the floorboards, desperate to drag himself out of this room.

But as they dug into the wood, nails broke, and hands were cut. The results of his struggle were little more than increasing the bleeding.

And then everything finally went black, just as a shimmer of blue appeared in the last little remaining part of his vision.

Kaden groaned as he came back to conciousness, pain and exhaustion still lingering in his body. His eyes blinked and then he noticed that right before him, an ever familiar blue notification was staring back at him. Mocking him.

Oh… He didn’t know whether to feel shocked, pleased, or angry. He was pissed that this had happened to him, but pleased and shocked with the results.

The part of him that was pleased won out in the end, as he took a look at his status panel to check out both bloodlines.

Level 1 - Experience 0/200

Not much had changed as none of the boosts were enough to put a noticeable dent in his attributes, but this was just one level so far. He would get more.

As for the bloodlines, he focused on them and was surprised when the window suddenly expanded to include the whole information.

Putting that surprise aside, both of the bloodlines certainly seemed good. More than good actually, but he wished that he had something to compare them to.

He was happy to have the extra attribute points, and the weapon proficiency was something that would aid him a lot.

After all, he had never trained with a weapon before, so it was a tremendous advantage to already have some minor proficiency with it.

But he couldn’t really make any further conclusions than that.

Finally he checked out the bottom of the status panel and was instantly stumped by the new experience requirement. A whopping 200 experience til the next level.

With just one level, the experience required had doubled. Doubled! He had already spent nearly a hundred days on a single level, but now it was going to take him even longer for the next.

Sure, he had gotten better at meditation, but even if he reached the absolute limit of perfection, he would only gain slightly more than one experience per two hours.

It wasn’t the 400 hours that scared him, he could get through that, it was the idea of what would come after. 800 hours was also doable, but 1600 would be insane, not to mention 3200.

Best not get ahead of myself, I don’t even know if that’s how it works.

He managed to calm himself down for now, deciding to just take it one step at a time and see what happens.

For now, it was time to celebrate. He was itching to find his father and tell him the good news. Without sparing a thought for his bloodied state, he dismissed the status panel and skipped out the door.
