Chapter 2 - The New Beginning

Chapter 2 - The New Beginning

Feeling the sudden shift of weightlessness, Azazel opened his eyes.

He was floating in the middle of a dark, mysterious space.

Far away in the distance was an endless expanse of thousands of tiny little bright white dots.

Looking down, he saw that his hands and legs were almost completely transparent. Along with that, he had lost his trousers and was naked from head to toe.

“It’s… it’s not nothing.” He was almost beside himself with jubilation.

He still had no clue what this was or where it was, but it wasn’t a void. He still existed, he could still form thoughts and feel.

Holding his transparent hand out in front of his eyes, he stared at it, turning it to see it from all angles.

Through the haze of his hand, his eyes caught a slight twinkle coming from one of the dots.

“Are these all stars?” He muttered to himself, breath taken by the sight.

He had never seen any stars before, stuck in an underground cavern his entire life. But now that he focused and once more laid his eyes on those little dots, he instantly knew what they were.

It was such a beautiful sight. Those books hadn’t done the real thing justice.

As his eyes scanned the stars, they fell upon a certain one. It was twinkling brightly, and he felt a sort of attraction towards it. Like it was calling out to him, whispering his name.

He wanted to get closer, to feel it, to touch it.

Instinctively, he took control of his body, urging it to float in the star's direction.

He started out slowly, but bit by bit he sped up. In his peripheral vision, lights whizzed by him as he passed other stars on his way.

Still, these distances were vast, and hours passed one by one as he continued his journey.

In this space he had no sense of time, merely feeling lost in the attraction, doing whatever it took to get there.

Before he knew it, hours turned to days, then weeks.

Little by little he got closer to his goal, and as he did, the attraction towards it only grew stronger. It took up all his attention, occupying his focus.

He had no interest in the scenery left, his mind obsessed with the star.

And then finally, after roughly nine months, he was right before it.

It was small, just a tiny orb that he could hold in his palm, yet he had spotted it from so far away. The attraction was incredibly strong now, and within he knew that something had brought him and this tiny star together.

It pulsed with life and urged him to grab hold of it.

Driven by his instincts, his palm went forth, cupping the star.

Immediately he felt a jolt as something passed through him, and just like that, the weightlessness vanished.

All the lights cut off, plunging him into total darkness as he started plummeting downwards at a rapid speed.

As he fell, a blue box materialized from nothing right in front of him.

Incompatible Races Detected

Attempting merge of human and demon

The text was all blurry from falling so fast, and he could hardly read it.

From within his body came a horrible sensation of pain, radiating through his entire body.

Every cell inside of him was screaming out in suffering, muddling his head from the signals overloading his nerves.

His eyes turned bloodshot, and he couldn’t focus as another blue box popped up before him.

Merging 50%

It was all he could do just to stay conscious.

But just as the edges of his vision began to fade, he was jerked to a sudden stop, the sensation of falling disappearing instantly.

At the same time, a plethora of new senses washed over him.

First there was light, so bright and sudden it blinded him. His eyes had trouble adjusting from the total darkness, and he couldn’t see anything but white.

Then came the sounds, the cold, and the feeling of being wet.

But worst of all was the pain. Somehow it was even worse than before. It felt like all of his bones were being broken and reforged over and over.

He screamed out, wailing from the torment as his eyes started coming into focus.

There was another flash of blue as another box appeared, making his pain subside.

Merging Succesful

Resulting race is half-human / half-demon

He skimmed it, shocked by the words. But there was no time to process it, as he noticed his current situation.

He was in a room, all white, held in a woman’s arms as four people stared at him.

“He’s perfectly healthy,” The woman said.

She carried him over to a bed where another woman lay, panting and completely out of breath.

Azazel was handed over, and he watched in amusement as the exhausted woman became re-energized and swept him up, holding him close to her chest.

Looking up at her, he was full of confusion from seeing her misty eyes that were full of love.

Everything suddenly clicked into place in his mind.

I was born, he thought, not knowing what to do with that information.

His eyes jumped around the room, trying to take it all in.

A man sat beside the bed, holding the woman’s other hand. He was watching Azazel with that same look in his eyes.

He squeezed the woman’s hand and then pulled out a strange sort of futuristic syringe. A clear light blue liquid sloshed around inside of the clear glass chamber.

Without warning, he held Azazel’s arm and brought the needle up against his tiny shoulder.

There was a click from the injection of the needle. Azazel felt the tiny prick, and as the liquid started flooding into him, it brought a sense of clearness and euphoria with it.

He was still mellowing in the feeling of it, when the man brought out another syringe, this time with a light green liquid inside.

Like previously, the needle was injected, and the feelings intensified. His head had never felt so clear before, so at ease, so euphoric.

But there was no pause in the man’s movements, and with another syringe spent, he just kept going, taking out one after another, all with different colored liquids.

Azazel felt like he was drowning in the sensations. Meanwhile, those blue notification screens kept popping up one after the other.

After the man had administered the last injection, one more notification popped up. It stayed for a short while, giving him time to read it before fading away. And as it did, it took the addicting sensations with it.

Tier 5 Awakening Crystal used

Max Level increased from 40 —> 50

Azazel had read what each of the notifications said, but did not know what they meant. What was a level? What was an awakening crystal? He could read the words, they were in his native language, but it made little sense.

“How many did you use darling?” The woman on the bed asked, biting her lip like she was nervous to hear the answer.

To Azazel, her words just sounded like gibberish. He didn’t understand a single thing she said.

“Up till Tier 5, the same as his siblings,” He said, giving her hand a squeeze. “Don’t worry, Kaden is my son, I won’t treat him any different.”

The woman nodded, clearly feeling some relief.

Azazel read the words on the notification and was just as confused as earlier. But then another giant source of blue appeared, taking up a majority of his vision.

Azazel was starting to get overwhelmed by all the things taking place.

First, he couldn’t follow the conversation between the man and the woman at all, and now another damn box, and a gigantic one at that, had appeared out of nowhere.

What is this world? What are these things?

It was all so strange, there was no explanation for any of it in the books he had read. Not even a hint or mention of it. He was sure of that, having read those books from cover to cover multiple times.

Not willing to just give up, his eyes swept the panel, carefully reading over it as he tried to interpret the meaning of it.

The first words he saw were status panel, right at the top in big bold letters.

That wasn’t too hard to guess. Something about his current status, most likely? Probably.

Then there was Kaden Hale, which made no sense whatsoever. He really didn’t understand it. Was it a name for something or a word? There was no way to know.

As for the age thing, that was obviously showing his own age. That much was easy to follow.

He was glad to have something on there that he knew what was, but before he could even rejoice, there was a new thing that stumped him.

It was the half-human, half-demon thing.

He had read the thing about the merging, but forgotten because of everything going on.

Still, while it was hard to believe he was now some hybrid human demon thing, it was clearly not the most surprising thing that happened to him today, so he chose to ignore it for now.

Especially as he had already found something else to be the object of his questioning. What in the devil’s name was a class? And why was it locked?

His infant head hurt just thinking about it, leaving him with no choice but to also ignore that for the time being.

By now he was so lost that it would do him no good to dwell on the status panel any further.

While he had been doing his thinking, the woman and man had been watching him.

The man himself was smiling widely from watching Azazel’s confused expression.

“The status panel must have appeared for him after I said his name,” The man said, chuckling with a hint of nostalgia in his eyes.

“You were like that too once,” The woman said.

“Haha maybe, I wouldn’t know, you’d have to ask my father.”

As they watched him, Azazel was watching them right back, trying to glean something from their conversation.

“Looks like he’s a curious one.” The man waved at him, an exaggerated friendly expression on his face. “Aren’t you little Kaden?”

Azazel listened intently while the man spoke, his eyes brightening when he heard that unfamiliar word he had seen on the status panel. Or at least he thought that was what he heard, but he wasn’t sure how that word was pronounced.

Still, he wasn’t even a tiny bit closer to figuring out the meaning.

And by now, the exhaustion from all the thinking he had done was weighing on him. His infant brain just wasn’t up to such a strenuous task.

His eyelids grew heavy and his eyes soon started slipping.

“Looks like the little guy is sleepy,” The man said, and the woman gave a hum of agreement.

Azazel tried to stay conscious, doing his best to keep his eyes open. But he couldn’t fight it, his eyes close once more, and just like that, he was out like a light.
