Search and rescue

Search and rescue

Syrus was back in the void with Gluttony, but the Ravens weren’t anywhere to be seen. “Is it because they’re summoned?” Syrus wondered, but didn’t bother to question it.

“What do you wish to make?”

“I want to make another summon and I want it to be focused on search and rescue. Make it as strong as possible right now.”

“Do you wish to sacrifice potential for immediate power?” the voice asked.

Syrus smirked. “That would be very stupid of me, but right now, yes. That’s what I need, but I also want you to make the summon open for evolution. Once I get stronger and get more resources, I plan on evolving the summon,” Syrus explained. “I want its potential growth to be connected to my skill.”

“Giving a creature focused search and rescue that much potential? Not very antagonizing.”

“Who said I was going to use for everyone? I’m no saint. I want power to protect what’s mine,” Syrus stated. “I don’t care what happens to the rest of the world.”

“Understood,” the voice replied. “Based on your current power and abilities, the strength of the Unit would be Bishop grade. Granting a name would not be possible.”

After the voice finished, Syrus found himself back once again. He stepped out of his hut and went to an open area.

“Have you succeeded?” Tia asked when she noticed him.

Syrus nodded and several maps appeared in his hands. “They’re still scouting, but they’re done with the surroundings,” Syrus handed her the map as he walked by.

He stopped in the middle of the clearing and summoned his latest creation. The goblins nearby jumped in shock when a black wyvern appeared out of nowhere.

“It’s mine!” Syrus yelled to reassure them.

Syrus opened the wyvern’s stats and was pleasantly surprised.

Chaos Wyvern Stats: Strength: 40 Constitution: 50 Agility: 50 Dexterity: 40

Summoner’s unity – allows the creature to use any non-combat skills of the summoner and their units.

Syrus held in a cackle. The system was really something else. He didn’t even consider a skill like that. With that skill, the wyvern would be able to use his tracking skill and the Ravens’ mapping skill. Along with its stats, it was an incredible creature.

“Let’s go find my mother.”

------

Sylvia tore through a group of zombies, clearing a path for her mother and daughter. Her class was spearman which gave her a physical enhancement skill and a skill called “Grip” that just made her held on to her weapon tighter.

Her mother, Aurora Blake, had a non-combat class called “Chef”, while her daughter, Samantha, was far too young to awaken yet, so she also couldn’t fight.

As the eldest daughter and a mother, she needed to step up and protect her family. Even if she was getting tired, she needed to get them to safety.

“Sweety... you need to rest,” Aurora spoke. “You’ll collapse at this rate,” she said in concern.

“I’m fine. We need to get to somewhere safe first before I’ll rest,” Sylvia replied as she raised her spear.

“Looks like we found a feisty one boys,” a group of men armed with guns revealed themselves.

“I bet we could get her to fight for us we grab those behind her,” one of the men in the group pointed to Aurora and Samantha.

Sylvia glared at the men raised her spear. One of them fired at the ground near her mother and daughter. “I’d be careful if I were you. You might mess with our aim,” one of the men spoke.

Sylvia dropped her spear and raised her hands in surrender. The leader stepped forward with his gun aimed at Sylvia. “That’s a good gi-”

He was interrupted by a large shadow flying over them. They all looked up to find a black wyvern flying over them. The men began firing at the wyvern, while Sylvia used that opportunity to grab her spear and carry her mother and daughter away from the scene.

She heard several loud crashes and a powerful roar behind her, but she didn’t look back and kept running.

“Sylvia!”

She heard a familiar voice call out to her. Looking up one of the ruins, Sylvia spotted a woman with dirty blonde hair styled in buns. “Hanna!”

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

“Over here! Hurry!” Hanna gestured for to hurry up.

Sylvia rushed over and ducked under one of the destroyed walls into the ruins. Once they were away from the fight, Sylvia now had the opportunity to breathe in relief.

“Thank you for helping us,” Aurora thanked Hanna.

“Don’t worry about it. Sylvia’s a friend,” Hanna replied. “Haven’t seen you in a while,” she turned to Samantha.

Samantha just nodded shyly.

“Thanks Hanna,” Sylvia spoke. “Are you alone?”

Hanna nodded. “I was originally in a group, but we split up since they wanted to head to their homes,” Hanna answered. “I went to mine, but the apartment already collapsed.”

“Where are you heading now?” Sylvia asked. “I couldn’t find any news on a bunker before signal went out.”

“I heard some OD players are making settlements, but I don’t think they’ll allow everyone inside.”

Sylvia glanced at her mother comforting Samantha. “We need to try.”

Hanna nodded. “I’ll lead the way to closest one I saw after getting some rest.”

“She was just here...” Syrus muttered as he arrived at the scene.

“Please spare us,” one of the surviving tugs begged as he tried to crawl towards Syrus.

“I’m looking for a middle-aged Asian woman,” Syrus leaned down at the man. “Have you seen someone like that?”

“T-three of them! They were just here before your dragon arrived.”

“Wyvern,” Syrus replied. “It’s a wyvern,” Syrus aimed a gun at the man.

“W-wa-” *Bang*

“I’m not sure what happened here, so I don’t know if it was good thing I sent you ahead,” Syrus spoke to his wyvern.

The wyvern could fly at an incredible speed. Fast enough that Syrus would easily fall off if he were riding on it, so he sent the wyvern ahead to secure the safety of his mother. It took him around half an hour to arrive, and his wyvern already did a lot of damage. It didn’t take a genius to figure out what happened here, so Syrus did not hesitate to wipe out the thugs that threatened his mother.

“Since they’re close, we can take it slow in the sky,” Syrus hopped on the wyvern and took off.

Following the trail of mana, he was surprised to find it was heading towards a settlement that was visible nearby. The settlement looked even more developed than Tia’s group, but Syrus didn’t know how they would react to a wyvern.

However, Syrus didn’t care.

------

“It’s pretty close,” Sylvia commented as they spotted the settlement.

There was a long line to the entrance that was being monitored by heavily armored elves. There seems to be an interview being conducted before granted entry, causing the buildup of the line.

“This is the closest, but I heard they separate people depending if they’re a player or not,” Hanna pointed out.

Sylvia began to hesitate since she might get separated from her daughter. But this place was supposed to be safe from monsters.

As she was hesitating, one of the guards called out to her. “Are you a player?!”

“Yes,” Sylvia answered as the guard approached.

“Players line up over there,” the guard pointed at a shorter line.

“But my daughter,” Sylvia said.

The soldier reached to grab her arm, but Sylvia moved away. The soldier’s stern expression turned sour, and he drew his sword. It didn’t take long for the other guards to follow the first guard’s lead and raise their weapons at Sylvia and her family.

But the guards suddenly turned their attention at the sky. “Wyvern!”

The soldiers formed a line to face the wyvern, but they still didn’t allow the civilians to enter the settlement as another line of guards blocked them.

“At least someone got it right,” a familiar voice called out. “I’m looking for my mother.”

“Syrus!”

Sylvia watched as her mother rushed past her and towards the wyvern without fear. “Mom!” Sylvia called out.

Much to everyone’s surprise, the wyvern bowed as Aurora ran towards it, allowing Sylvia to watch as her younger brother got off. She sighed in relief and lowered her spear. She felt Samatha cling to her waist. “It’s alright. It’s your uncle Syrus.”

Sylvia wasn’t exactly close with Syrus considering her poor experience with all the other men in her life. Her father left them. Her own husband left her. That left her with a deep distrust of the opposite gender. But Syrus was still family, and hopefully she could trust him.

“Identify yourself!” one of the guards yelled.

“We have a settlement of our own. You don’t have to stay here,” Syrus gestured for them come over.

Sylvia nodded and approached with Samantha, ignoring the guards behind them. “Son, can we bring her too?” Aurora pointed to Hanna. “She helped us back then.”

“Certainly mother,” Syrus nodded.

Hearing the conversation, Sylvia gestured for Hanna to come along. Hanna pointed to herself in confusion.

As everything was happening, the guards grew more annoyed for being ignored. The only thing stopping them from attacking was the intimidating wyvern.

Everyone got on the wyvern, but before they could leave, someone decided to stop them. “Hold it!” an elven woman wearing a golden set of armor shouted. Her green cape fluttered as she marched forward with no fear. “Which clan are you affiliated with?”

Sylvia didn’t know what the elf was talking about, but she thought ignoring her was no longer an option. Unfortunately, Syrus didn’t think the same way. He simply ignored the woman and ordered his wyvern to take off.

“Identify yourself, or we will shoot you down!” the elf yelled.

Sylvia grew concerned at the situation, while Syrus just smirked. He snapped his fingers, then a living mannequin appeared out of nowhere and dove towards the elves. The mannequin unleashed a primal roar that disrupted the elves. It landed on the ground, causing a powerful shockwave.

“Vermin!” the elf charged with her sword and shield.

The mannequin swung its fist and the elf raised her shield to block. But what surprised everyone was the force behind the attack. Her shield dented upon impact and blew her back. As the creature began fighting the elves, they left the scene on the wyvern.

Syrus laughed at the scene as they flew away.

“What was that?” Sylvia asked.

“My summoned creature,” Syrus replied. “This one too,” her brother patted the wyvern.

Sylvia wasn’t surprised to find out Syrus became so powerful. He was always quick to adapt to every situation he was put in. It would be more of a surprise if he didn’t get ahead of everybody. Being a summoner also fit him considering how he didn’t like dirtying his own hands.

But she was very grateful to him in this situation. Without him, she could have been separated from her daughter.

“Where are we going?” Aurora asked.

“It’s hard to explain,” Syrus replied.

About an hour later, they spotted a small settlement with small green people.
