Chapter 2: Ned
---------------------------------------------------------------------
He’d managed to shut the group up. Everyone was listening to music except himself. He heard shouts from a familiar voice.
There were windows which showed the courtyard of the school. Ned looked out the windows and saw several students running away from the ferals.
That’s Mr. Williams!
His favorite teacher in charge of history. Ned liked having discussion with him even if the class called him a teacher’s pet or a smartass. Ned liked history and civics. The funny stories Mr. Williams would share about his army life. He had been a drill instructor until he retired and started teaching.
Mr. Williams was leading a large pack of students towards the school entrance. He tried to keep order while the students were panicking and screaming.
"Keep running!" Yelled Mr. Williams as he stopped. Some of the students stopped for their teacher.
"Go without me! I’ll hold em!"
He didn't have to tell the students twice. They noticed the pack of crazy people behind them. They left him without a second thought.
He was an older man of 50 who stood at nearly 6’2 feet.
The nearest feral approached Mr. Williams. Before the feral lunged forward he was already in the air and was thrown back. The next Feral came but Mr. Williams was ready and with a strong right jab to the face he knocked the Feral back.
The rest of the pack of ferals was wary of Mr. Williams.
That’s weird. Are they afraid?
They surrounded him while Mr. Williams put up his guard. Still a few of them ignored Mr. Williams and continued their chase of the fleeing students.
Once he was surrounded they lunged forward in unison. The punches and attempt of shaking them off were in vain.
They bit into every part of his body tearing away his flesh.
respected him even more. Mr. Williams did not scream and continued to struggle until he was on his knees. The ferals dog-piled on to him blocking Ned's view.
recited a prayer and made a small salute to his Teacher.
Did they make it out ok?
Ned was concerned about the students who had left Mr. Williams to escape. It was basic knowledge that during a disaster you just had to sit put and wait for help. Was he making the right choice? Would it be safer if they ran into the city? If we run where do we go? What about food? I’m sure they use schools as evacuation centers. Right? What if I lose people on the way out of this school? They’re my responsibility.
Why do I have to make a choice for them?
He looked at all the faces in the teacher’s lounge. Some he knew others he did not. Of course he didn’t want any of them to die but what if he just left by himself?
He sighed
“I don’t know why I’m stressing out.”
We’ll just wait here for help.
sun was going down but it continued to rain. Ned looked at his watch.
7pm huh.
By now everyone in the teacher’s lounge was asleep or trying to sleep.

Did I make the wrong decision in staying here rather than trying to escape?
He noticed a light in the Lounge.
“David what are you doing?”
David was using his phone as a light source to illuminate his notebook.
“I’m writing down important info.”
Ned glanced at what David had written.
"Why don't you stop? Help will get here soon anyways."
"They won't."
"Don't be stupid David it takes the government a few days.I mean look at Katrina."
"This is different. I mean look at the news on my phone."
David brought his phone up for Ned to watch the stream.
None of the news outlets were reporting anything about what was going on in the city.
“See the government is hiding it but look at the forums on Reddit.”
He was right the forums on Reddit were filled with threads about the ferals.
“Have you tried calling your parents?’ asked Ned attempting to change the topic
“Yeah they’re not answering. What about your parents?”
“Well my mom died when I was young and you remember I told you my dad’s on a business trip.”
“Yeah, Ned”
“Hmm?”
David turned towards Ned.” Do you think we’ll be ok?”
“I’m sure the police or National Guard will show up any minute now but for now let’s try to sleep.”
****
The next morning
The internet and service networks were down on their cellphones.
There was however still power since both the refrigerator and microwave were operational.
“Ok this is how were going to do it. Each one of us will get one of the lunches in the refrigerator however you can decided to eat it all now or split it up in to threes for breakfast, lunch and dinner.”
“Dafuq you mean one lunch a day?”
“Steven right?”
“That’s my name yeah.”
“Well Steven We don’t have enough food in the fridge for all of us so until rescue comes were going to have to ration it.” Ned opened the fridge
“So take your pick people.”
They lined up and microwaved their food. Most split their food into threes to eat later.
“You’re not eating?” asked Antonio
I’m saving it for later besides I can go a day without food.” Responded Ned
“So then what’s our next move?” asked David after taking a spoonful of casserole
“I told you guys we wait.”
“What we need to do is get weapons.” Ramiro walked up to the trio.
“Weapons?” Antonio looked at Ramiro
“Yeah were gonna need em.”
“He’s right,” David put his spoon down “After all the government is leaving us for dead.”
They’re not!” said Antonio out loud bringing attention to himself.
Ned looked out the windows.
“What weapons could there be in a high school?”
Ramiro smiled
