Chapter 19: Bestalow

Chapter 19: Bestalow

“Bestalow, Bestalow, I have love, I want to show. Let those dear, oh dear to me, end the day, oh so happy…”

Sola sang to herself as she hung up banners on the wall, reaching up on her high stool.

“Gifts for those, close to my heart, let my thanks, just be the start. Let the Old Gods, let them see, that you make me, so happy!” She finished, finally pinning up the other end of the banner and nearly falling off.

She hopped off, looking around the room and admiring her decorations, as a ring came out from the kitchen and Julia pulled out some baked sweets from the oven.

“Whoa!” Sola cried out, rushing over to try some, before Julia moved her hand away.

“Sola, they’re hot.” She warned. “And they’re for everyone tomorrow, remember?”

“Yeah, I know.” Sola let out, sitting up on the kitchen counter.

“Are most of the decorations up?” Julia asked.

Sola gave a thumbs up. “Yessir! Lelvow itself would be proud!”

“I’m sure they would be.” Julia smiled, tussling Sola’s hair, as the dorm’s door opened.

“Happy Bestalow!” Harley called out, bringing Julia and Sola into a hug. “I’m so excited for tomorrow.”

“Same!” Sola cheered, getting off the counter. “I can’t wait to show you my gift!”

“No jumping the gun.” Wess advised, joining them. “We’re waiting until tomorrow.”

“Aww, can’t I get a peak early?” Harley teased, Wess batting her off.

“We respect Bestalow tradition in this dorm room, Harley.” Wess declared. “Don’t spoil it for the rest of us.”

“Vonodo.” Essex spoke up, having entered with the others, now standing off to the side of the room. “What is the purpose of this decoration? And what is happening tomorrow?”

The others looked confused.

“It’s Bestalow.”

Essex blinked.

“We’re celebrating Bestalow with Team Vanguard.” Julia informed.

“Is that a form of merriment?” Essex asked, shocking the others further.

“You don’t know about Bestalow?!” Harley cried. “You poor thing!”

“What have you been doing with your life?!” Sola exclaimed.

Essex shook her head. “I have heard of this event, but we do not celebrate in the Segaru Clan. Indulgent time can be spent working and aiding others and is heavily discouraged. The only celebration permitted is Boncala Day.”

She bowed to the others. “Relias. I do not intend to be ill-informed of common customs.”

“It’s not a problem.” Julia excused, grabbing her hands. “It just means we can show you everything about it!”

She spun around the room, showing off Sola’s decorations. “Every year, we put up decorations and hang out with our loved ones to show them how much they mean to us. We also gives gifts to those we care about.”

Julia pointed to what looked like the academy Spire, but scaled down, with almost branch-like appendages coming off of it, each carrying a present.

“You tell the people giving you your gift what you want, and then they have to add something to it that shows how much they know you.” Harley said, joining Julia’s side.

Essex nodded along. “So…if someone were to ask for a book, you would gift them a book about something they are passionate of.”

“Exactly.” Julia said, blushing in embarrassment. “You can also be a bit vague about it. I indulged a little and asked for something really rare…”

“And guess who had to get her gift?” Wess joined in, sighing out loud. “You better appreciate it.”

“I’m sure I will.” Julia grinned, pointing to the decorations. “And as part of the celebration, each state has its own Old God that’s used for the holiday.” Julia explained, holding up some of the other decorations. “Central Point celebrates with Lelvow, the god of homeliness.”

Essex walked around, noticing the small, yellow figure adorning the banners and balloons across the room.

“All my decorations have Enprov on them.” Sola explained, sidling up to Essex. “I already left them back home, but I wouldn’t have hung them up anyway. It’d be disrespectful.”

“And that’s most of it.” Julia finished. “We’re inviting Team Vanguard over tomorrow night to celebrate and exchange gifts with them. Usually, you’d get more then one gift, but it was easier to organise this way.”

“Wait, hold on.” Harley said, raising a finger. “So, Essex didn’t know about the gift giving?”

Essex shook her head.

“So, who was she supposed to give a gift to?”

Julia looked over her list and grimaced. “Florey.”

“I may still have time to retrieve something.” Essex said, already opening the door.

“Every shop is closed. The best you could do at this moment is some sunscreen from the convenience store.” Wess advised, Essex realising what she was saying and closing the door again.

“…I suppose I am lacking options.” Essex admitted, blushing a little. “What would be appropriate to say at this moment?”

“Oops.” Harley said.

Essex sighed out. “Oops.”

“Since you didn’t ask him for anything, maybe you won’t get a gift either?” Sola suggested, pouting a bit. “But that’d really stink for your first Bestalow…”

Essex rested a hand on her shoulder. “I will appreciate the company of others. That will be my gift.”

The others looked at her sweetly, Julia blushing excitedly.

“Essex…” She said, playfully swatting her arm. “Save the sweet stuff for tomorrow, silly!”

Harley sidled up to Wess. “And a happy Bestalow to you too.”

“Likewise.” Wess replied. “Whose gift were you in charge of?”

“Chops.” Harley grinned. “She’s so getting the best gift.”

“Really? Ten…” Wess said, before looking back at Essex. “…possibly eight, gifts are being exchanged, and you consider yours to be the best already?”

“Trust me, it’s a good one.” Harley bragged, side glancing Wess. “You care to make a wager?”

“Harley, you know I don’t like betting.” Wess pointed out, before thinking it over. “…but I suppose since it’s nearly Bestalow…twenty capitals?”

“Let’s make it fifty.” Harley said, pulling out a fifty note from her wallet. “So, I’m saying Chops gets the best gift. I’m guessing you’re betting on your gift?”

Wess shook her head and tapped her chinned. “I’m going to say…” She scanned the room, then landed her finger back on Harley. “You.”

“I get the best one?” Harley asked. “Isn’t your gift for Julia?”

“Yes, and it’s a very good gift.” Wess said. “But I think you’ll get the best.”

“Alright.” Harley shrugged. “It’s really a win-win for me.”

“Wow, so advantageous.” Wess remarked, smirking to Harley. “You sure d-“

Wess felt her tablet vibrate in her pocket, as she pulled it out, reading her latest messages and groaning.

“Something up?” Harley asked.

“It’s Cyrus.” Wess groaned. “He was planning on coming over tomorrow so we could celebrate Bestalow, but now he insists on going back to the Southern Wayside to celebrate with his family. Honestly, he complains about not being able to spend time with me, and now he’s the one showing me up.”

“You could always catch up with him before he leaves.” Julia suggested, now hanging up more decorations with Sola and Essex. “There’s time before the party.”

“It’s a matter of principle, Julia.” Wess pointed out. “…and it’s disappointing.”

Harley looked down at her. “Did he stop putting out?”

Wess refused to reply, simply deciding to leave the dorm room and go about her business, as the others gave Harley a look.

Harley shrugged. “What? It was worth asking.”

———

“Bestalow, Bestalow, I have love, I want to show.” Joleicia sang, nudging Saxin. “Come on, join in.”

“Alright.” Saxin agreed, idly peeling potatoes. “Let those dear, oh dear to me, end the day, oh so happy.”

“You really should sing more.” Lenin said, entering the dorm and pecking her cheek.

“I sing plenty when we perform.” Saxin pointed out, handing the potatoes off to Joleicia.

“Yeah, but not enough off stage.” Lenin goaded, leaning by the kitchen counter. “Your voice is really pretty.”

“Oh, I know.” Saxin advised, closing their distance. “But don’t worry, we’ll both be singing plenty tomorrow night…”

Lenin’s eyes lightened up as he remembered their plans. “Oh yeah! I forgot about that.”

“Are you guys performing?” Joleicia asked, closing up the oven. “We can totally accompany you!”

Saxin and Lenin giggled to themselves. “Considering your persuasions, I really don’t think you’d want to.” Saxin clarified. “It’s not music related.”

Joleicia took a second before it connected. “…oh. Oh! You guys mean…okay, nevermind.”

“Thanks for the offer, though.” Lenin said, as Chops and Florey returned to the dorm, just ready enough to leave again.

“Morning classes are finally done.” Chops let out, collapsing onto the couch. “Give me a second and we can go food shopping…”

“All good!” Joleicia cheered. “Shepherd’s pie is in the oven and should be ready once we get back.”

“You sure it’s a good idea to leave it unattended?” Lenin asked. “I’ve had a couple experiences with fires before and they usually don’t work out.”

“Don’t worry, Team Valiant’s just across the hallway. If this place goes up, they’ll be the first to know.” Joleicia advised, clapping her hands. “Let’s get ready for the big shop!”

The team went about grabbing their effects, leaving Florey as the odd one out, still standing near the entrance in his own little world.

“How was class?” Joleicia asked, grabbing her backpack.

Florey awoke from his daze. “Oh…good. Got, uhh, got a lot of stuff done.”

“You better get ready, Florey.” Chops said, having dragged herself from the couch. “It’s almost time to go.”

“Right.” He replied, heading to his bunk to empty his bag, dropping off a few of his textbooks, before pulling out…

…the papers. He realised, looking over them carefully, making sure to hide them with his body. Mr Cecil will want an answer soon.

Florey kept reading ‘EHM’ in his mind, slowly but surely, floating off into his daze again.

“…”

“…”

“…”

“Florey?” Joleicia asked, the rest of the team standing by the door. “Are you ready to leave?”

Florey took a moment to reply.

“Just a second.”

He stuffed the papers back into his bag, following behind them with it slung over his shoulder, hanging back as the others talked amongst themselves.

———

“Gifts for those, close to my heart, let my thanks, just be the start…” Julia mumbled to herself, heading back through the dorm halls. The following evening had fast approached, as she’d spent most of the morning preparing the dorm, almost over preparing. Fortunately, Julia was finished for the day and could duck out to get some air and stretch her legs, as the time planned for the party was soon approaching.

“I’ve gotta share some more Bestalow stories with Essex…” Julia mulled. “I’m sure she’d get a kick out of them.”

Julia skirted around the hallway, getting herself pumped for the party as she approached her dorm.

“Finally, a get together with Vanguard!” She cheered, pumping her fist in the air and dancing through the hall. “And on Bestalow of all days! If dad could see me no-“

“Hi Julia.”

Julia froze mid-dance, realising Joleicia was outside her team’s dorm and in the hall, as Julia’s anxiety was starting to set off alarm bells.

Joleicia looked back at her. “Were you just dancing through the hall?”

Julia stayed still, failing to reply.

“I mean, it’s cool if you were.” Joleicia dismissed. “I do it when no one’s looking.”

Julia sighed out. “Sorry, just got excited about the party…”

“No need to apologise.” Joleicia exclaimed, slinging an arm around her. “Who wouldn’t be excited? It’s the season of sharing and love!”

Julia let herself calm down and giggled. “You make it sound really corny.”

“Oh, oops.” Joleicia let out, rubbing her neck. “Anyway, the rest of Vanguard’s already in your dorm. I hope you’re ready for festivities!”

“I should be asking you that.” Julia laughed, opening the door for both of them, a-

“HAPPY BESTALOW!!!”

Julia froze in place again, the roar from the collective teams throwing her off guard, as they dragged her and Joleicia inside.

“Wow!” Joleicia gasped, dotting around the room. “Look at all the decorations! You guys really went all out!”

“Julia!” Harley called, bringing her in for a hug. “Look like you’re already excited!”

“Tell me about it…” Julia said, still recovering. “Could you guys not yell at me next Bestalow?”

“We wanted to surprise you!” Sola clarified, joining in. “Maybe it was too much.”

“Eh, I think it was just enough.” Chops agreed, slugging Julia’s arm. “Gotta keep you on your feet.”

“Or on the floor from a heart attack…” Julia remarked, Saxin stepping into the middle of the room and tapping her champagne flute.

“Attention!” She called. “Now that everyone’s officially here, it think it’s only fair Wess, Lenin and I give you the official Northern Wayside Bestalow greeting before we commence with a night of revelry and cheer.”

Saxin cleared her throat, as Lenin, followed by a somewhat reluctant Wess joined her side, bowing to the others.

“Celamõi, de vela semã.”

A light applause broke out in the room, before the party officially commenced, everyone chatting amongst themselves, swapping anecdotes, telling jokes, and sharing their Bestalow gifts with one another.

“Why’s there a broken fish tank by your bed?” Joleicia asked, surprising Julia and Wess.

Julia and Wess looked back it at, admittedly forgetting how weird it was to keep around.

“Souvenir.” Wess said.

Joleicia blinked a few times, before shrugging it off. “Why not? I’ve got a collection of bullet shells back home that just sits there.”

“Wess has a sword that just sits there too.” Julia pointed out, indicating to the wall above the fish tank. “You two sure collect a lot.”

“Well, you keep giving me stuff.” Wess clarified, looking to her present hanging from the Spire. “But I guess I’m turning that around tonight.”

Wess went and grabbed Julia’s present, Julia protesting. “Isn’t it a bit early? Nobody else has opened anything yet.”

“Nope. We’re not dilly-dallying.” Wess professed, holding out the gift. “My gift to you.”

Julia looked back at the lovingly wrapped gift, before letting out a sigh and opening it carefully, slowly reading the cover of the book and gasping in surprise.

“Lelvow, thank you!” Julia confessed, flipping through the pages excitedly.

Wess nodded happily. “It was hard to track down, and not nearly cheap enough, but you asked for something rare. May I present the infamous Team Spectrum autobiography wh-“

“Where every time Vector is written, it was accidentally corrected to Vasectomy!” Julia exclaimed, jumping up and down. “Wess, this is incredible!”

“You should expect nothing less.” Wess bragged, Julia hugging her happily. “Alright, you can calm down. I already know you have a copy of the proper version.”

“Yeah, but this is really special.” Julia admitted. “Thank you. Really.”

Wess found herself staring, not really sure what she was feeling, as she looked to the floor.

“It’s…no problem…”

Having found a moment of silence, Wess cleared her throat, and for the first time looked unsure of herself.

“Julia…I‘ve been doing some reflecting, and…I don’t think…” Wess started, stumbling with her words. “It’s…I haven’t thanked you yet. You, umm, I’ve lost the exact phrasing, but you…broke me out of my shell…somewhat…and since it’s Bestalow, I wanted you to know…you’ve become…a good friend to me over this past year…so thank you.”

Julia teared up a little, happily showing it off and grabbed Wess’ hands. “You’re more than welcome.”

Meanwhile, Joleicia teared up like up crazy, standing on the sidelines as to not interrupt the genuine moment.

“You two are so cute…can I take a photo of you guys?” Joleicia asked, taking out her tablet. “Just a real quick one to remember this moment.”

“Only for you, Joleicia.” Wess excused, standing beside Julia in front of the fish tank, hand behind Julia’s back.

Joleicia lined up the shot, before giving the thumbs up and heading around the party to collect more memories, as Julia leaned into Wess.

“I think you got me out of my shell too.” Julia agreed, grabbing her hand, as they appreciated the eventful night, before Harley slotted herself into their moment.

“Look at my two favourite teammates, hanging out.” Harley grinned. “Apart from Sola and Essex.”

“Of course…” Wess groaned, Julia giggling beside her. “Thank you once again, Harley, for killing the earnest tone.”

“I didn’t kill it, I made it better.” Harley pointed out, Wess rolling her eyes.

“Have you presented your present?” Wess asked. “Or received yours yet?”

“No.” Harley moped, pointing to Julia’s new book. “Is that yours?”

Wess blinked. “It has Team Spectrum on the front and Julia’s holding it. Who else would it possibly be for?”

Harley shrugged. “Joleicia?”

Julia laughed to herself, patting Wess’ shoulder. “It’s an okay guess. You just reminded me, I’m gonna go give Joleicia her gift.”

Wess waved her off, as Harley handed Wess a spare cup of punch, Wess inspecting it questioningly.

“I don’t see Cyrus yet. Is he still a no show?” Harley asked.

“…unfortunately, yes.” Wess admitted, attempting to stomach the punch. “I’ve texted him, but scheduling’s been a nightmare on his families end, so he’s either going back home tonight to celebrate later, or not celebrating at all. I’m…so unbelievably frustrated, and it’s not even at him.”

Harley leaned back with her. “I think you should be. It’s pretty last minute to be standing someone up on Bestalow.”

“I did it to him just a few weeks ago. He can’t help holding it off this late.” Wess complained. “I guess I’m just envious that he has a family he wants to spend time with…”

Harley knocked her shoulder. “You’ve got us, and Graham. And Belvedere.”

Wess chuckled to herself. “Oh yes, who needs a boyfriend when you have a broadsword?”

She laughed despite her emotions, as Harley tried to analyse what she was thinking.

“…do you still wanna be with him?” Harley wondered.

“…I don’t know…” Wess realised. “I know the answer’s yes, I mean heck, I still got him a gift, but it’s just…”

Wess stood up from the wall and readjusted her appearance. “He gets one more hour. If he doesn’t show up, I’m going straight to him for an answer. I don’t deserve to wait around.”

“Good on ya.” Harley agreed, cheering her with her glass. “But in the event you make it work, I’m really happy for you two.”

“Way to cover your bases.” Wess replied. “He’s making a decision tonight. Excuse or not, I’m going to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth.”

———

“Ooo, what could it be?” Avalon prefaced, shaking his box up and down, as the rest of Team Exemplary sat around the lounge area of their dorm. He kept shaking it, trying to guess its contents from the sound, as Acadia leaned over to Leandra.

“So, what’d you end up getting him?” Acadia asked, curled up in her blanket.

“What do you think? It’s what he’s wanted for ages.” Leandra said, catching Roman’s attention.

“A girlfriend?” Roman dryly remarked, Claudius chuckling to himself.

“That’d be pretty rough considering there’s no air holes.” Claudius suggested, all four of them laughing to each other, as Avalon finally gave into the temptation and opened it up.

Support the author by searching for the original publication of this novel.

“Oh my, it’s a…!” He exclaimed, before giving it a proper once over. “Wait, what is this?”

Leandra looked confused. “It’s a Northern royalty banner. You asked for something royal.”

“I wanted the OLDER print, back before the monarchy disbanded.” Avalon clarified. “This is one of the worthless newer ones.”

“They…don’t make the old ones anymore.” Leandra reasoned, starting to get pissed. “And they’re crazy expensive, too.”

“For good reason. They aren’t this touristy stuff.” Avalon reasoned, laying the banner back down.

“Your face is about to be full of fisty stuff…” Leandra mumbled, Roman holding her back.

“Well, I always say not to half-ass these things.” Avalon suggested, clapping his hands excitedly. “Who else is ready for more gifts?”

Avalon kept digging around the gift pile, as Leandra felt her spine crawl.

“I don’t know why I bothered…” She admitted, Roman patting her back.

“Cause you care.” He said, turning to her, Avalon handing his gift to Claudius. “Like an idiot would.”

“I could’ve gone back and seen my family for Bestalow. But no, let’s spend it with the team…” Leandra grumbled, Acadia bumping her shoulder.

“Don’t worry. My present for you kicks ass.” Acadia assured, as Claudius looked over his gift.

“Oh, wow.” Claudius said, unpacking a pair of very plain socks. “They’re…red.”

“You asked for something red for your feet.” Avalon said, visibly proud of himself.

“I asked for a bread-making kit…” Claudius muttered, Acadia leaning back.

“At least all our gifts are equally unliked.” She commented, Avalon and Claudius getting into an argument. “Anyway…”

She handed her gift to Leandra. “Happy Bestalow.”

Leandra managed a smile, as Roman perched his head on her shoulder while she unwrapped, pleasantly surprised with what was inside.

“Damn.” Roman remarked, as Leandra pulled out a hand-woven banner with the team logo stitched in. “That looks custom built for your shield.”

Leandra ran her hand on the fabric gently, as Acadia was visibly embarrassed.

“D-don’t tug the fabric too much. I’m not the best at sewing…” Acadia mumbled, rubbing her hands between her thighs. “You wanted something flowing, so I thought it would look good outside of combat…”

“Is that a Team Banner?!” Avalon exclaimed, yanking it from Leandra. “This would look incredible on my cap-“

“It’s for my shield!” Leandra yelled, pulling it back quickly. “And be careful with it! It’s got delicate seams!”

Avalon rolled his eyes, displaying his hands to the others, truly not reading the room. “I’d say this is quite the successful Bestalow!”

“For warm feet…” Claudius muttered, Avalon clapping together joyously.

“Happy Bestalow, everyone!”

———

“So, how’s Bestalow been for you?” Saxin asked, suggestively leaning on the wall.

“Pretty good.” Harley said, rubbing her neck. “I was hoping I’d be the one getting your gift, but…”

“Oh, don’t worry.” Saxin excused, leaning into her. “You’ll get to make up for that, I assure you.”

“Anytime soon?” Harley chuckled.

“Well, sooner then you might think.” Saxin teased, shaking her empty champagne flute. “Looks like I need a refill.”

Saxin sashayed off to the punchbowl, Harley taking her chance to admire her sway, before slumping back exhaustedly.

“I’m never gonna sleep with her…” Harley lamented, as Saxin filled her glass up joyously.

“The only thing better than alcohol is fresh fruit.” She remarked, before noticing Florey against the wall, watching the party from the sidelines.

She made her way over, waving gently. “You know, a social event is best experienced socially.”

“Thanks, but I’m comfortable here.” Florey stated, staying put.

“Alright. We’ll be here if you get lonely, though.” Saxin professed, joining back with the others, as Florey was left to his own devices.

He rested his hand on his leg, staring at the two teams playfully chatting, dancing, chugging punch, all while various terms floated in his mind.

“Is this party not to your enjoyment?”

Florey turned his head to Essex. “Not especially.”

“That is…unfortunate.” Essex sympathised, joining him. “I do not experience these events often, so I am ill-equipped with how to enjoy them.”

“Pretty sure you just talk to people.” Florey reasoned. “But Bestalow has presents and all…”

“Reliasda Selo, Florey. I must apologise.” Essex said. “Upon hearing of Bestalow’s customs, I have not provided a gift.” She cleared her throat. “Oops.”

Florey raised his hands. “It’s fine. I didn’t really want anything anyway.”

“It is a blunder on my part, however.” Essex said. “And I did not provide you with details on my desired gift.”

Florey raised a hand and headed over to the spire to grab his gift. “I still got something for you. It was kind of a safe bet.”

Essex unwrapped it and realised it was a simple case of weapon polish.

She bowed back to Florey. “Grela. I am thankful.”

Florey looked a bit awkward, backing off a little. “It’s just some polish. You don’t need to be so thankful…”

Florey was visibly uncomfortable, as Essex stared back at him and straightened her back.

“Does this attitude relate to your recent outburst?” Essex asked bluntly, surprising Florey.

“…can we stop talking?” Florey asked, Essex staring out at the rest of the party.

“Scull the pie! Scull the pie!” Cheered Chops, Harley and Sola, as Joleicia desperately tried to rip the shepherds pie away from Lenin.

“Don’t scull it!” She complained, Lenin feeling guilty and giving it back, as the peanut gallery booed.

“He was gonna scull it!” Chops complained.

“I really wasn’t.” Lenin pointed out, Joleicia placing the pie back on the table.

“I made the pie for everyone, Chops.” Joleicia admitted, looking around the table. “Hey Julia!”

“Yeah?” Julia said, turning her head to face her.

“Can Lenin scull the punch bowl?” Joleicia asked, getting an excited reaction from the others.

“I…guess?” Julia shrugged, as Joleicia tried passing the bowl off to Lenin.

“Oh…no tha-“ Lenin gagged, pulling himself away. “I hate that stuff. I’ll throw up halfway through the bowl.”

Essex’s ears perked up, before Florey watched her join the group and grab the bowl of punch.

The group got excited again. “Scull the punch! Scull the punch!”

Essex lifted the punch bowl above her head.

“I will scull the punch!”

“Yeah!!!” The room cheered, everyone surrounding Essex as she prepared, save for Florey, still propped against the wall.

She took a second, evaluating the mood of the room, before throwing her head back and chugging as much punch as she could.

“Go! Go! Go! You animal!” Chops called, pumping her fists.

“Show that punch who’s boss!” Sola cheered, mimicking punching motions in the air.

Essex looked unstirred, having already reached the halfway mark, before lifting the bowl even higher and pushing through until the end, finishing with a triumphant lift of the bowl and a resounding cheer.

“What a woman…” Saxin cooed.

“I know…” Lenin agreed, Essex lifting her arms into the air as some acknowledgment of her achievement.

“I always said she could roll with the punches.” Harley remarked, getting a guilty chuckle from Julia.

Florey found himself smiling, amused at the joint camaraderie of the teams, even if he wouldn’t let his own questions go.

Should I be with them? Florey wondered, playing with his hands as a distraction. Do I deserve to be?

Joleicia and Chops lifted Essex onto their shoulders, parading her around.

I’m never going to be a Venator. I know that much at this point. So, would it be worth my time? I mean, of course I like them…

Saxin and Lenin roped Wess into cheering Essex on.

We’ve had arguments, and Joleicia’s…but we still get along, even if we don’t feel like a team.

Sola was demanding the bowl be filled back up so she could try, getting encouragement from the others.

No, that’s stupid. We’re still a team, I can still go here. They can help me out. Like they always…

Florey then noticed Julia, weeping with laughter as Harley told more bad jokes, enjoying herself thoroughly.

…always have.

———

Liddy waited out in the hall, hesitating for a second as she stood outside Rose’s door.

I hate to do this on Bestalow… She thought. But I can’t leave it any longer…I’m sorry, Rose, I have to break up with you.

Rose heard a knock at the door, stunning her in place as she finished up the last of her decorations.

“Coming!” She hurried, heading to the door, before opening it up to Liddy, holding her present and decked in a giant winter coat.

“Hi, Rose.” Liddy greeted, bringing Rose into a warm embrace. “Where are your teammates?”

“Oh, they all left to spend time with their families. So now we get the whole night to ourselves.” Rose boasted, showing off her decorations, along with a candlelit dinner out on the balcony.

“Oh, Rose…” Liddy said endearingly, melting a little at her kindness. “That‘s sweet, but I need to…”

“Come on, come on!” Rose encouraged, dragging her to the balcony.

They made themselves comfortable outside, Rose revealing an absolutely stunning dress, as Liddy was finding it harder and harder to remember to break up with her.

Come on, Rose. Why’d you make it so form fitting? Just give me a minute…

“I hate that we have to be on different teams…” Rose lamented. “I wish you could be with me more…”

“Well, that’s actually something I wanted to talk about…” Liddy started. “I th-“

“Wait!” Rose exclaimed, before clapping her hands. “We can just become our own team after graduating!”

“Our own team?” Liddy asked, Rose clasping her hands around Liddy’s.

“Absolutely! Then we can spend as much time together as we want!” Rose exclaimed, leaning over the table and bouncing around playfully.

“Okay, okay, calm down!” Liddy laughed, feeling warm again despite herself. “Can we finish off dinner?”

“In a minute.” Rose said, reaching under the table, pulling out two small boxes. “You asked for jewellery, so I got you a little something.”

I forgot I asked. Liddy realised, mentally face-palming herself.

Rose slid a box over, waiting desperately for Liddy to open it, as Liddy slowly lifted the lid, stunned in place as she lifted up the necklace.

“Rose, this i-“

“Wait! Wait wait wait!” Rose interrupted, opening up the other box and pulling out a similar necklace. “And get this…”

Rose leaned over the table and joined the two necklaces together.

“Oh, Rose…” Liddy let out, nearly tearing up. “They form a heart…”

Liddy tackled Rose to the ground, cuddling her adorably, as Rose took as much time to admire it as possible.

“Whoa, I need to get you jewellery more often.” Rose remarked, Liddy nuzzling her neck.

“Shut up, please, and let me apologise.” Liddy finally said, straddling Rose on the floor. “I…feel really bad. I came over to break up with you, but you just had to be the absolute sweetest person ever.”

Rose looked a bit shocked. “I’m sorry, what? Break up? Why?”

“Cause you’re really pushy.” Liddy explained, as Rose felt a bit insulted by her bluntness. “And I hardly get a word in edgewi-“

“What do you mean I’m pushy?!” Rose complained, now angry at Liddy. “I don’t push, I’m just excited to show you things.”

“And you make a point of that whenever you get the chance.” Liddy reasoned. “While interrupting me, too.”

“That’s…” Rose started, before reflecting back on their time together. “…oh…yeah.”

“I mean, we could have talked this out, but since yo-“ Liddy started again before Rose pressed a finger to her lips.

Rose sat up, still letting Liddy straddle her. “…man, I feel dumb. I mean, I get excited when I’m with you, you know…”

“Of course I know, silly.” Liddy said, rubbing her arms. “I love that about you.”

Rose shook her head. “I wanna make this up to you. I’m gonna let you do whatever you want tonight. No more interrupting from good ol’ me.”

“Really?” Liddy asked in surprise.

Rose nodded, as Liddy sat up and faced her, ready with her answer.

“I want you to [CENSORED] [CENSORED] [CENSORED] in my [CENSORED] [CENSORED] until I [CENSORED] myself, before [CENSORED] [CENSORED] [CENSORED] [CENSORED] [CENSORED] all over me.”

Rose looked understandably surprised, before glancing back at the spare bedroom and facing Liddy again.

“Okay.”

Liddy got all giddy, as Rose took her hand and led her to the bedroom.

I love Bestalow.

———

“Sure is windy outside.” Chops remarked, staring out at the balcony. “Good thing Julia got you that scarf.”

“I know.” Joleicia said, snuggling up to it. “She’s so sweet.”

Chops stared out at Wess, admiring herself and her new coat in the mirror, having just gotten it from Chops a minute prior.

“She asked for something elegant.” Chops pointed out, finishing off her punch. “Figured a coat was both elegant and practical.”

“That was nice of you.” Joleicia realised. “I thought you two didn’t get along very well?”

“…she’s not all that bad.” Chops admitted, avoiding eye contact. “Maybe she’s loosened up. Heck, she even thanked me for it…”

“Ahem.” Harley interjected, Chops turning to face her. “I didn’t know there’d be absolute babes at this party.”

Chops let out a weak laugh. “That’s your best pick-up line? Can’t you think of one from when we were going out?”

Harley tapped her chin. “Uhh…do the curtains match th-“

“Eww, guys.” Joleicia let out. “It’s Bestalow. Can you keep it clean?”

“No problem, Jojo.” Chops assured, Joleicia folding back into the rest of the party, as Chops faced Harley again. “I’m assuming you’re dropping off my gift?”

Harley lifted up the giant gift from behind her. “How did you know?”

Chops grabbed it eagerly and started tearing off the wrapping, getting truly excited as the image was revealed to her.

“I…there’s no way…” She said, lifting up the painting. “It’s Hardison’s ‘Voyager!’ How the hell did you buy th…wait.”

Upon closer inspection, she noticed some slightly shoddy paintwork, as a couple flakes came off the frame.

“It’s not quite a Hardison.” Harley explained. “You said you wanted something classy, but really cheap. So I thought, what better gift then a recreation of a famous painting? Hardison’s still your favourite, right?”

Chops grinned happily. “You know me really well.”

She put down the painting and hugged Harley. “Thanks. You’re still a great gift giver.”

“My goodness, is that a Hardison?” Wess exclaimed, baffled by the sudden painting. “By the gods, how did you…oh wait, it’s a recreation…”

“Meow, Wess. Love the coat.” Harley remarked. “You doing anything later?”

“Not you.” Wess retorted, Chops snickering to herself.

“Had to burst my bubble like that.” Harley said, hooking Chops with her arm. “By the way, Chops really liked her gift, so you better hope mine’s better.”

“Oh, it will be.” Wess assured, as Sola’s ears perked up.

“Oh yeah!” She realised, waving Harley over. “Harley!”

“Alright, coming!” Harley replied, fist-bumping Chops. “Enjoy the painting.”

“Pretty hard not to.” Chops reasoned, staring at Wess. “Jealous?”

“Of a cheap knock-off?” Wess remarked, inspecting the painting. “They couldn’t even get the pointillism technique consistent…how cheap was this?”

“Harley so gets me…” Chops cooed, as Harley met up with Sola.

“Oh! Oh! Harley!” Sola exclaimed, grabbing her gift from the spire. “Your gift! Take it take it take it!”

Harley picked up the present and shook it around, noticing how flat and light it was in comparison to the others.

Oh no, did she get me socks? Harley thought, opening it up. Alright, don’t want to hurt her fee…

Harley took a second to register the writing, as the weight was suddenly understood to be tickets instead of socks.

“So?” Sola asked.

Harley mouthed the words, before checking their authenticity.

“The Ancient Collrino Pottery Exhibition…” Harley read allowed, before growing a grin and sweeping Sola off her feet. “You remembered!”

“Remembered what?” Julia asked, overhearing them.

Harley let Sola down, but still hugged her madly. “I don’t know how long ago it was, but I mentioned wanting to go to this exhibition. I’m not great at saving money, so I couldn’t afford to go even though I really wanted to.”

Harley started hugging Sola again, causing her to laugh profusely. “And then you just had to be the best and get it for me!”

“Haha! Stop! Stop it!” Sola laughed, struggling to breath, before Harley finally put her down. “Oh boy…I just remembered you really wanted to, so it seemed like a no-brainer.”

“No-brainer? You don’t even like pottery!” Harley cheered. “And you still remembered it!”

“Well, yeah.” Sola said, blushing a bit. “…it’s cause it was important to you.”

Harley blushed a bit too, as Wess wandered over to them.

“What’s all the celebration for?” Wess asked.

Harley leaned over to her. “Hate to say it, but think you win our little bet. I just got the best gift.”

“Already?” Wess wondered. “That was quicker than I thought they’d be…”

“They? No, Sola got me the gift.” Harley said, waving the tickets. “And there’s just enough tickets to take the whole tea-“

“Hi there.” Harley heard, feeling a set of eyes on her, as she turned to see Saxin and Lenin standing right beside her.

“Oh, hey guys.” Harley said, showing off the tickets. “Look what Sola got me. There might be enough for you guys too.”

“Harley, you’re awfully sweet.” Saxin cooed, drawing her attention fully. “And I’d like to think we’ve become very good friends.”

Julia and Sola looked to each other, as Harley scratched her neck. “Definitely! It would’ve been good seeing my dads for Bestalow, but I’m glad we did this team swap thing.”

“As are we.” Saxin agreed, looking to Lenin.

“But just because we’re all celebrating Bestalow together doesn’t mean you can’t get another gift.” Lenin pointed out, confusing Harley.

She looked back at the spire. “I…don’t see another present from you guys.”

“Oh, no, not like that.” Saxin excused, resting a hand on her shoulder. “But it’s still a physical gift, and one you need to unwrap…”

“…but it’s not there.” Harley said, truly struggling to fit the pieces together, as Saxin rolled her eyes and whispered into her ear.

“…ah…oh…oh!...oh shit! That’s makes so much sense now!” Harley realised, Wess face-palming in the background.

“How thick can she be?” Wess remarked.

“Wait, so we finally…” Harley repeated, starting to get excited, before looking to Lenin. “Oh, I’m assuming you’re…okay with this?”

“Actually…” Lenin said.

“…he’ll be joining in.” Saxin finished, Harley grinning like an idiot.

Harley tried to hold back her excitement, as Saxin and Lenin guided her to the door.

“Joleicia, dear! We’ll be using the Vanguard dorm room for a while! Just a heads up!” Saxin called, Joleicia popping her head up.

“O-okay. Just don’t break anything.” Joleicia advised. “And…clean up after yourselves, I guess?”

Harley turned to leave, before noticing a smug Wess on the sidelines.

“Did you know about this?”

“I heard those two mentioning it a few days back.” Wess explained, smiling back to her. “Go have fun.”

Harley nodded back. “I hope everything works out with Cyrus.”

Harley handed her tickets off to Sola, hugging her again before hopping excitedly to Saxin and Lenin, as Julia and Sola looked to each other awkwardly.

“Uhh…”

“…yeah…”

“…well, she liked the tickets.” Julia said.

“Yeah.” Sola nodded. “She probably didn’t want to damage them.”

Julia smiled, as Wess hooked a present off the tree, then headed for the door. “Wess, where are you going?”

“I’ve been putting this off for too long. I’m confronting Cyrus.” She admitted, straightening herself out. “And dropping off my gift.”

———

Faller slinked through his front door, leaving his bag and coat by the entrance, as Ferris was laying on the couch in the dark, only illuminated by the TV light, flipping through channels idly.

“Nothing’s on except Bestalow specials.” Ferris admitted, Faller collapsing beside her. “You’re making dinner.”

“Give me a minute to walk through the door…” Faller asked, resting his hand on the brim of his nose.

Ferris sat up. “Nothing new?”

“I keep hitting dead ends.” Faller admitted, grabbing a beer. “The only good leads are that autopsy and Coatsworth, but he’s yet to do anything definitive. Maybe if I’m lucky, I’ll catch him in the bathroom monologuing his evil deeds.”

“We can always break into his house.” Ferris suggested, opening up a new beer bottle. “Rummage through his unmentionables. Maybe leave the taps on if we’re feeling adventurous.”

Faller didn’t dignify her with a response, taking the remote and flipping through channels as well.

“I told you this was a waste.” Ferris brought up, leaning back into her seat. “You dragged me to that academy for nothing…”

“It wasn’t for nothing.” Faller said, still changing channels. “I’m still alive, aren’t I?”

“Not if you throw yourself at the next Behemoth Wailing…” Ferris pointed out, stealing the remote back from him.

Faller let her take it, before finishing off his bottle and reaching into his pocket, pulling out a small box and handing it to Ferris.

Ferris took notice and let out a groan. “You got me a gift? I didn’t ask for anything.”

“Just open it.” Faller said, nursing another beer.

Ferris decided to take it, opening it up and seeing it was two earrings, each with a topaz embedded in, the light glinting off of the TV.

She took a second to look them over, before realising Faller was staring at her and closing the box quickly.

“They…look fine.” She begrudgingly admitted. “…you’re just wasting money.”

“I’m allowed to…hey.” He sat up and raised his bottle. “Happy Bestalow.”

Ferris rolled her eyes and grabbed her bottle, clinking them together. “And cheers to more drinking.”

“Ain’t that the truth.” Faller agreed, sinking back into the couch, as they continued to flip through channels together.

———

Wess hurried down the hallway, trying to remember her way back to Cyrus’ room while reading over the room names in search of ‘Team Salvation.’ She stumbled around for a while, before turning a corner and noticing Cyrus outside his room, trying to get a handle on some suitcases.

She found herself trudging over in anger, before slowly composing herself and continuing toward him.

He nearly dropped his other suitcase, before noticing who was approaching. “Wess! Hey! Sorry, I’m on a really tight schedule, so I can’t talk right now.”

“No, you can wait.” Wess stated, tapping her foot. “I’ve been doing it all afternoon, after all.”

Cyrus looked confused. “Wha…the party! Dammit!”

He kicked his suitcase, then grabbed his foot in pain. “…ow…that was dumb…”

“You aren’t charming me with your clumsiness.” Wess reasoned, maintaining her ground.

Cyrus waited for the pain to go before explaining himself. “…I just got the go-ahead from my parents a couple hours ago. I’ll be heading back to the Southern Wayside and celebrating Bestalow with the rest of the family. I spent the last hour packing like crazy so I can catch the last train.”

“You couldn’t have texted and let me know?” Wess asked.

“I…was…” Cyrus tried, before sighing. “No, you’re right. I screwed up. I shouldn’t have left you hanging.”

He grabbed up his suitcases again. “I’ll make it up to you when I get back.”

“Oh no, you don’t.” Wess said, blocking his path. “We’re talking this out.”

“Wess! I need to catch that train!” Cyrus complained.

“WE need to talk about our relationship. Because frankly, I don’t feel like we’ve been in one for a while.” Wess pointed out.

“Don’t get snippy at me!” Cyrus argued back. “And don’t be hypocritical! You did the exact same thing last week!”

“The…team got a sudden assignment. I couldn’t be the only member not participating.” Wess justified.

“But it keeps happening! Julia needs this, Harley needs that, Essex has this thing going on. Am I still not important enough for you?”

“Of course you are! But people need me, so I just can’t make it work!”

“Neither can I!”

The two stopped yelling for a minute, letting themselves breath, as Cyrus propped himself up on the wall.

“So, that’s it. We can’t make time for each other.” Cyrus complained, before finally hearing it. “…I…guess we really can’t make it work…”

“…that’s…why I came over.” Wess confessed, struggling to get the words out. “…I think we need to have that conversation we don’t want to have.”

“…yeah, I think I…I think I follow you…” Cyrus sighed, ruffling his hair. “Is that really why you came to see me?”

“I figured I should give you the courtesy of a break-up in person.” Wess reasoned. “…I still don’t want to, but…”

“…fuck…” Cyrus let out, lying back onto the wall. “…sorry…”

Wess scoffed. “That’s my line.”

She closed the distance and stood beside him. “…nobody can say we didn’t try…”

“…I guess part of me thought this could still work.” Cyrus explained. “I mean, we still like each other and all…”

“…yeah.” Wess agreed, looking over at him.

She took Cyrus into a hug, bringing him in close. “It was fun while it lasted…wasn’t it?”

“I mean, the sex was.” Cyrus retorted. “Really, that’s all I was in it for.”

Wess laughed to herself, before noticing a tear from Cyrus’ eye, as she wiped it away for him.

“Hey.” Wess said, pulling out her gift. “Happy Bestalow.”

“Oh.” Cyrus realised, reaching into his bag and taking out his. “I was gonna drop this off outside your room before I left…”

They opened them together, Cyrus chuckling at his and Wess hiding her embarrassment.

“‘How to Be a People Person?’” Wess read aloud, covering her face.

“Shampoo?” Cyrus remarked, getting another laugh from Wess.

“Oh, don’t be too mad. It’s travel size.” Wess replied, as Cyrus rolled his eyes and put it into his bag. “Keep dressing well, okay?” Wess insisted. “You’ll never get hired if you can’t look like an adult.”

“Ouch.” Cyrus replied, laughing a little. “One last stab before you go, huh?”

“Had to make it count.” Wess said, breaking the hug while holding back tears of her own. “Do you want help with your bags?”

“It…might be a bit weird. We did just break up…” Cyrus pointed out, Wess still processing it.

“O-oh…” She stuttered, before taking her leave. “Well then…I’ll…see you.”

Cyrus waved her off, taking a minute to let himself cope before heading to the train, as Wess disappeared out the middle distance.

———

Florey had been tapping his foot against the wall repeatedly for a while. Despite everyone else having the time of their life, Bestalow wasn’t cutting it this year.

To him, he had more important things to do.

“Where are you going?” Essex asked, watching him pass as she stood by the door.

“Out.”

With that, Florey slammed the door, the sound mostly unheard over the noise of the party, except for Julia, having caught the door closing in the corner of her eye.

She walked over to Essex. “Who just left?”

“Florey.” Essex said. “He is currently frustrated.”

“…I should check on him. Just to be sure he’s okay.” Julia professed, as Essex held her back.

“He has been in a similar mood as of recent.” Essex advised. “…he may not wish to discuss anything.”

Julia let out a breath, before swinging out the door. “I’ll make him.”

Julia opened the door to find Florey out in the hallway, leaning his head against the wall, his foot tapping rapidly against the ground.

“Hey stranger.” Julia greeted, getting no response. “Is the party not to your liking?”

“The party, the people, the academy…” Florey listed. “…heck, let’s throw the Venator industry into the mix too.”

Julia blinked confusedly. “What’re you talking about?”

“Julia, you know!” Florey complained. “It’s what I’ve been complaining about for ages! It’s this stupid, hypocritical academy that refuses to even try and end the conflict! It’s the students and teachers that sit by and watch, wasting time on people who shouldn’t matter, and it’s the Venator system, which has only been failing for the last century!”

Julia noticed her breathing picking up but approached Florey regardless. “Is this because of Avalon?”

“Avalon’s a symptom of the problem!” Florey pointed out, kicking the wall. “But as we all know, symptoms don’t mean anything, especially according to high and mighty authorities like Miss Ferris!”

“Alright, alright. Let’s calm down.” Julia said, resting a hand on his back. “Let’s talk this out. Clearly, you need to vent some stuff.”

“Vent?” Florey said, pacing around the hall instead. “…I don’t need to vent. I need somebody to see what I mean. Everyone else is so dumbstruck with cool weapons and their new teams that they can’t see what’s right in front of them.”

Julia sighed out and faced him again. “Remember in Year 7, when Mr Rubin gave you a 34 on that biology exam?”

“…no.” Florey lied.

“Exactly, you’re obviously still angry about it. You like to hold grudges.” Julia smiled. “But instead of just complaining, you got better at it. Now you’re one of the smartest guys I know.”

Florey looked back at Julia, visibly happy, happy with herself, and turned his back to her again.

“What’s the point of being smart if no one’s listening?” Florey criticised. “You clearly aren’t, or else you’d be making arguments against my points, not me.”

Florey turned back to her. “If you’re not gonna agree with me, at least admit why we haven’t spent time together.” Florey argued, stumping Julia.

Julia shrank back a little. “That’s…that’s not what we’re talking about.” Julia said.

“So? How much have we actually hung out this year?” Florey pointed out. “Some shared classes? A few training sessions? This party? You’ve been talking with everyone else except me”

“I’ve…been busy with my team. I’m sure you have too.” Julia justified, avoiding eye contact. “It’s been hard…”

“It’s been hard?” Florey reiterated. “What kind of excuse is that? Just cause you’re hanging out with your new friends doesn’t mean it hasn’t been hard on me too, you know.”

Julia shook her head. “Is that what this is about?”

“I dunno. You’re so good at reading me, you tell me.” Florey argued, facing away from her, drawing Julia’s sympathy.

“Florey…we’re friends. That’s not stopping anytime soon.” Julia reasoned, closing the distance. “But back in school, we were all we had. I’ve got other people in my life now that need me. I can’t always be there for you, and them, and myself.”

“But why am I such a low priority?” Florey complained. “We meet again after years, and now I’m an afterthought?”

“That’s…” Julia started, sighing out and looking ashamed. “…I’ve needed to draw the line somewhere…and I guess you were it…sorry Florey.”

“…I guess I’m not your pet project anymore…” Florey retorted, pissing Julia off.

“You were neve-alright, lose the attitude.” Julia demanded. “You don’t get my help if you’re gonna act like this.”

“I didn’t ask for help!” Florey yelled. “And neither did Wess, but you just had to shove yourself into her business! Cause that’s your thing!”

Julia started yelling too. “My thing? I was being nice! She’s my teammate!”

“And I’m your friend!” Florey cracked, his voice breaking up. “So stop obsessing over your team and give me the fucking time of day!”

Florey tried to hold back a few tears, failing to do so, as Julia’s anger melted away, letting her reach out for him.

“Piss off…” He groaned, hitting her hand away, as he tried to clean his face. “I’m not five. You don’t need to babysit me anymore…”

Julia rubbed her hand, before looking back at him, huffing out, and heading back into the party.

“You can come back in when you stop acting like an asshole.” Julia demanded, slamming the door.

Florey took deep heavy breaths, before kicking the wall once more for good measure, leaving a sizeable hole in it and stinging his foot.

He grabbed his leg in pain, trying to take his mind off of everything that was going through his head. The noise from the party certainly wasn’t helping.

But there it was again. That same acronym…

EHM.

Reaching for his pocket, he pulled out his room card, letting himself into Team Vanguard’s room, just catching the sounds of Harley, Saxin and Lenin enjoying themselves in the study.

He dove for his bag, pulling out the papers and a pen, before slamming the papers to his table, messily trying to sign them without staining the page with too many tears. He cleaned his face again, managing to sign his name in full, as he held out the papers in front of him, assessing the weight of his commitment.

He looked around the room again, searching for any excuse not to continue and truly finding nothing to hold him back, as the wind outside started to pick up to noticeable speeds.

In a hurry, he grabbed his bag, stuffed as much as he could carry inside, and left the room promptly, holding the papers to his chest as he walked, dropping his room card to the ground as he exited the dorms.

———

Wess wandered back down to Team Valiant’s room, making a point to clean herself up with her pocket mirror to hide the red around her eyes, as she found the rest of the team cleaning up around the room, Joleicia and Chops leaving just as she entered.

“What did I miss?” Wess asked, Sola dropping a couple bottles into the bin.

“The party went a bit sour.” Sola explained, helping Essex clear up the gift wrapping.

“Florey stormed out earlier, so we decided to call the party off early. Vanguard’s out looking for him.” Harley explained, sitting with Julia, who was rubbing her hand. “How did everything go with Cyrus?”

Wess cleared her throat. “We decided it was best to breakup. It was clear we couldn’t make it work.”

“You guys broke up?” Julia said, popping her head up. “I’m so sorry.”

“That is unfortunate.” Essex added. “Oops.”

“No, Essex…” Harley advised, as Wess scoffed openly.

“It was mutual. We both handled it well.” Wess said, somewhat standoffish. “Honestly…it was about time we moved on.”

“But he was so nice!” Sola cried. “You can still make it work!”

Julia grabbed her hand. “Do you need to talk about it? Because I’m fine to ju-“

“Whoa, come on everyone, back off.” Harley said, stepping in between them and Wess. “She just needs some time to herself. I’m sure Wess wouldn’t want a bunch of people obsessing over her right after a breakup.”

Harley turned back to her. “Right?”

“…yes.” Wess admitted. “Just…for a while.”

Julia nodded. “Okay. But we’re here if you need us.”

“…thank you.” Wess replied, as the others went back to cleaning, Harley turning to face her.

Wess eyed her up. “What?”

Harley outstretched her arms. “Come on. I’ll leave you alone after.”

Wess rolled her eyes and bore the hug, wrapping her arms around out of courtesy, as Harley patted her on the back.

“Breakups are never easy.” Harley said. “I’ve gone through plenty, so I really know how it feels. I know you don’t want to talk to us about it, but we're the next best thing, since you just broke up with the guy I know you’d like to talk to instead.”

Wess didn’t reply but thought it over as Harley released her from the hug.

“Or, you know, take out some frustration on a training post with Belvedere.” Harley suggested. “Whatever works.”

“…I’ll see how I’m feeling.” Wess confessed, joining the others as they cleaned up, making quick work of the dorm.

“That’s the last of it.” Julia said, looking over at the still constructed spire. “I’m fine with leaving that until later.”

“Agreed.” Sola chimed in, storing the last few decorations away. “Goodbye, Lelvow. Until next year.”

“I would like to thank all of you.” Essex stated, bowing to the team. “This was a fun event. I wish to enjoy my other ‘Bestalow’ as much as this one and learn further about the associated customs.”

Julia and Wess looked to each other cautiously, as Harley patted Essex’s back welcomingly. “I’m glad you had fun. I thought for sure you’d be regretting drinking that whole punch bowl by now.”

“…in truth, I have been putting off discomfort as to not disrupt anyone’s enjoyment.” Essex said, turning to the bathroom. “If you will excuse me.”

Essex hurried in, leaving Harley to help Sola put some things away, and Julia and Wess to reflect on their night.

“It hasn’t been a very good Bestalow.” Julia admitted, rubbing her arm. “The party was nice, but…”

“…yeah. The night could have ended much better.” Wess confessed. “I guess not every night can wrap up so nicely.”

“I was expecting a bit more for such a merry holiday.” Julia said. “And now Florey’s run off to who knows where…”

Wess watched Julia struggle to compose herself, before resting her hand on her shoulder and smiling. “He’s sure to come back. If you’re really close, then there’s no reason he won’t try to apologise.”

“…unless I was in the wrong…” Julia admitted, before shaking herself. “Sorry, I shouldn’t be so down on myself.”

“It happens to all of us.” Wess pointed out, grabbing a leftover wine bottle and a few glasses. “The wind’s dying down. Want to join me on the balcony?”

Julia nodded. “I think I need that.”

They headed out to the balcony together, as Harley and Sola watched from the study, just out of sight.

“Rough night for those two.” Harley admitted.

“Yeah. But I’m sure they’ll help each other through it.” Sola said, looking up at Harley. “And we can help too.”

Harley tussled her hair. “That’s what it’s all about.”
