“Sir we can’t just release it, it’s not finished yet. The consequences would be unimaginable.” Jonah said his voice trembling. “I say you release it so you are going to fucking release it.” The general spoke angrily. “But sir-” Jonah started before the general interrupted him. “Either you do or I execute you and have someone else do it.” Jonah was silent in response. “That’s what i thought.” The general stated evenly. As the general walked away he turned his head and spoke,” I expect the virus to be released by 0900, if it’s not it’ll be your head.”

As Jonah was finishing up the last of the virus canisters in his lab he heard klaxons begin to blare and scrambled to get up. When he did so he looked out his labs main window and saw hundreds of soldiers running to planes, helicopters and jeeps. Fumbling Jonah loaded one canister with what he hoped would be the solution to what was about to the worlds largest problem yet, a set of viruses with traits taken from the most contagious diseases all designed to spread a set of antibodies. Antibodies that would counteract the virus. As he heard doors hissing open he scrambled one last time to load the canister into the carrier drone with the rest and as he did he grabbed a syringe and took a dose of the vaccine. Right as Jonah slipped the dose into his pocket the general stormed into Jonah’s lab. “Is it ready?” The general asked angrily. “Yes sir.” Jonah stated meekly. “Good, i’ll have the bombers get ready.” Said the general. “May I take my leave sir?” Jonah asked worried. “Yes you may.” The general stated sharply. As Jonah walked around the towering general he felt a hand clamp down on his shoulder. “Good work Jonah, your government thanks you.” Said the general as he released Jonah’s shoulder.

“Barbara you don’t understand, you need to get yourself and Josephine to the bunker right now.” Jonah said as he sped down the highway. “Yes I know you’re scared but you need to trust me.” He continued. Before he could speak again there was a massive whoosh of air and as Jonah looked up he saw a formation of jets flying over heading in the direction of louisville. “Honey, they're rushing the schedule I need you in the bunker right now i'll be home soon.” Jonah said accelerating to ninety miles per hour.

One one and a half hours after the release of the virus
Pulling into his driveway Jonah exited his car and ran for the door of his house, as he did so he pulled on a gasmask with practiced precision. Yanking open the door Jonah saw a horrid scene, he saw a massive puddle of blood surrounding a small feminine corpse. As he approached he saw that the corpse had no face and that they were wearing a pink tutu. Falling to his knees Jonah began to sob. As he sobbed he heard a faint shuffling noise. Looking up Jonah saw his wife shambling towards him, blood covering the lower half of her face like some type of mask. In a panic Jonah scrambled backwards and as he did he ran into someone. Turning Jonah saw a soldier wearing a gasmask holding an M110 rifle. In a flash the soldier raised the rifle and fired a round into Barbara’s chest. As Barbara was hit by the round from the rifle she stumbled yet kept shambling forward. The soldier aimed and fired again this time nailing Barbara in the head. Barbara crumpled to the ground now without the top half of her head. The soldier then shouldered the rifle and extended a hand down to Jonah. As he helped Jonah to his feet he spoke,”Sir we need to leave. The general asked me to escort you to wherever you need to be and to follow your orders.” “How kind of the general.” Jonah spoke bitter. “With all due respect sir we need to move, they likely heard the shots.” The soldier spoke as he began to exit Jonah’s home. “Understood.” Jonah said meekly.

Three miles into louisville
Three hours after the release of the virus
“So what’s your name?” Jonah asked the soldier as they walked through the eerily quiet city. “It’s Miles.” Miles responded curtly. As they continued down the street there was a massive bang and Jonah felt a bullet whiz by his head. Miles then tackled Jonah into an alleyway adjacent to the street. “Stay here.” Miles whispered to Jonah before bringing his rifle down and aiming around the corner. Miles fired his rifle and there was a scream of pain from down the street. Suddenly a hail of automatic gunfire came from down the street and Miles barely managed to duck behind the brick wall of the alley before the bullets slammed into it. As the gunfire ceased Miles turned the corner and fired twice in quick succession, each shot resulting in an associated scream of pain. Ducking back into cover Miles deflty checked how much ammo he had left in his mag, fifteen rounds. As Miles went to peek back around the corner his helmet was blown off his head. Quickly retreating Miles looked back to Jonah only to see him huddled in a corner. Miles then grabbed a smoke grenade from his belt and skillfully pulled the pin and tossed it into the street. As the smoke began to billow from the grenade Miles ran back to Jonah and pulled him to his feet. “We need to move now!" Miles told Jonah hastily. Running across the street, smoke as cover, Miles heard a gunshot ring out and then heard a scream behind him. Turning Miles saw Jonah on the ground bleeding from a chest wound. Quickly he grabbed Jonah and began to drag him across the street. As he did so he heard another gunshot ring out and felt a bullet whiz by his head. Speeding up Miles drew his 1911 and kept pulling Jonah with one arm. Aiming in the general direction of the gunshots Miles fired three times. Finally making it to the other side of the street Miles dropped Jonah and holstered his sidearm. Jonah let loose a second scream and spasmed in pain. Miles knelt down by Jonah and began to administer aid when Jonah spoke haltingly,”Take the—Syringe—inject yourself—it’s—cure.” “Where?” Miles asked as he began to look through Jonah’s pockets. “Must—inject—" As Jonah finished his sentence Miles saw his head flop to the side. Finding the syringe Miles took it and injected himself with it. Looking back at Jonah Miles started to feel light headed and in a blink the ground was rushing up to meet him and then it all went black. As Jonah saw Miles fall he had one final thought, alea iacta est…
