“Brbbrbbrrrrbrbbrbbbr” the slime happily gurgled

It had taken about 5 hours of playing with the congeal skill to accomplish. This mostly entailed slithering it’s way up trees, splattering itself onto the forest floor, and regrouping it’s biomass. In the process it managed to bring said skill up to level 3, making it far easier to coalesce, and frankly much easier to move around in general.

Apparently even beings composed entirely of liquid could get stiff just like any other creature.

Wondering what to do next, the slime decided to play with the skill it was most curious about. It picked a spot it deemed worthy of targeting and evoked the skill.

The spot it selected also just so happened to coincide with the head of a spider monkey that had been curiously watching the spectacle. A stream of water jetted out of its gelatinous surface, spraying the off guard monkey hard enough in the face to knock him backwards. Try as he might, he failed to grab on to any branches or vines, falling just over 30 feet before making a dull thud on the forest floor.

This sudden spike in experience left the slime with a general sense of what the fuck just happened. The contrast of 5 hours to reach level 2 and 30 seconds to hit level 3 was jarring to say the least. And what was with those strange notifications. Thanks to the telepathic nature of the notifications it understood that they were alerting it of the damage it had inflicted upon the weird hairy creature, but it couldn't quite figure out why the system would alert it of such a thing.

At a loss the slime made its way over to the freshly deceased monkey to investigate. The first thing it noticed was the weird red stuff coming out of the thing. Even though this was the first time it had ever seen an animal it was still able to recognize the leaking appendage as a head thanks to its monstrous instincts. Said instincts were also likely why it had subconsciously aimed for the area it did.

Naturally the monster's next course of action was to taste the red substance it identified as blood, immediately followed by the body itself. To say it found this flavor pleasant would be like calling the sun hot, this unexpected pleasure made it quite literally vibrate with delight.

By this point even a being as simple minded as this new born slime was able to make the connection that killing things was an incredibly lucrative source of experience and proficiency, not to mention a great chance to consume more of those yummy things.

Not one to plan or hesitate, it immediately shot up into the canopy and surveyed the area for potential targets. As it turned out there were quite a few, it spotted 3 more of the hairy things grouped together, several strange winged creatures of various colors and sizes, and a long green thing. This was rather easy considering it did not see in the traditional sense, like all slimes it more or less had a spherical field of vision that did not care about silly things like camouflage or even solid surfaces for that matter. More or less it had a perfect 3D model of everything within a 10 meter radius of itself, quite a useful ability in combat.

Not privy to what had just taken place below, the group of spider monkeys were quite startled by the appearance of the black goop and decided to make a run for it. This was the right move as the monkeys were undoubtedly faster than the slime, or at least it would have been if not for two things. Seeing an opportunity to strike the snake that had been disguising itself as a vine wrapped its strong body around one of the escaping monkeys with blinding speed, constricting it completely before the creature could even register its presence. The remaining 2 monkeys did not even have time to register this, as a powerful level 3 shoot skill hit one of them in neck hard enough to throw its head back with enough force to tear the muscles and break some vertebrae. A second shot soon accompanied the first aimed this time at the final monkey, but it dodged... The stream was fast but unlike the slime's previous targets this one was not caught off guard. It had seen the skill and thus the element of surprise was ruined giving it the chance to quickly scamper off out of the slime's perception radius.

Now, onto the next order of business. The snake was still in the process of squeezing the life out of the monkey it had caught. And although the slime was not happy to have one of its targets stolen, it could also tell that this was not an opponent to be taken lightly. The slime recognized the speed it had displayed earlier as a dangerous weapon, not to mention the fact that it could quite literally see the 6 feet of pure muscle that allowed it to perform the feat.

Despite all this, it was relatively unperturbed since it was not yet familiar with the concept of fear and despite the opponent's powerful body and impressive speed this hardly seemed like a threat to a creature with total immunity to blunt force. It shot a beam of water at the snake's head which was quickly dodged thanks to its flexible nature. Learning from this miscalculation it prepared to fire another shot at the section of snake that was coiled around the now dead monkey.

That was when it suddenly noticed something strange, the long green thing's muscles seemed to have subtly thickened at some point in the last 3 seconds. A creature that relied on sight would not have been able to pick up on the minute change, but the appearance of several new muscle fibers along with the timing was quite relevant from the slime's perspective. The beginning of this 3 second time frame was punctuated by the untimely death of one unfortunate spider monkey. Leading the slime to a conclusion.

It's opponent had just leveled up.

And although the slime did not know it yet, this was the beginning of a new era for life on earth.
