Part Thirty: Hardly Any Light In You All

Part Thirty: Hardly Any Light In You All

I activated Mage Link as soon as I swooped down through the window, scanning for those strange Light Runes that make up a Human. However, there were no signs of a human within here. I squawked. The two maids who were Once Nana and Sydney stood in standby mode, as they called it, awaiting my orders. I hopped on the ledge and noticed a peculiar third gathering of Nature Runes underneath my bed. It was in the shape of a long and wide lump, rather than a Human. It was slender and lacked legs, with a pair of tiny arms and hands near where its neck would be if it was a Human. I caught a forked tongue slip out of its mouth in a flash. A snake? I cawed. The creature was waiting for my arrival, wasn’t it?

— Ormr of the Ophioloft Labyrinth, level 26

— Class: Snake Assassin

Bound to Balaris of Sharra

HP: 100%

Mana Pool: N/A

Stamina: 100%

Stats

— Attack: S

— Magic: N/A

— Defense: S

— Magic Defense: B

Warning: This Entity specializes in Poison and Venom based attacks, but that portion will be nullified by the Passive Skill: Poison Immunity. However, its physical damage will still be applied to the HP of User ‘Charlotte.’

A measly level 26 Monster, huh? Its stats were high, but my own were higher. This creature wouldn’t feed me a lot of experience if I were to kill it, right? It did not seem to pay attention to me as I landed on the ground in my bird form. Perhaps it was waiting for me to fall asleep in my bed. What shall I do with it? It would be a perfect specimen to test out a prank I had in mind with my Portals.

— Skill: Metamorphosis activated. Original Form: Charlotte selected.

Still, the snake did not move. How gullible did it think I was? I activated Mage Link and created a spell circle. When it manifests, a Portal will appear flat against the floor facing down. If I were to link this Portal to one outside, it would just crash to the ground and die, right? My senses alerted and time seemed to slow as I saw the fangs of Ormr launching towards my face. Ah, I nearly forgot my Reflex stat allows me to focus on moving much quicker while in combat. Wisdom said I was moving faster regardless, but it felt like time slowed down and I could move like normal while they couldn’t, so there!

“You’re no fun,” I calmly told the snake and seized its head with my hand. The snake’s bite clamped down on my arm with a hiss, as poison began to seep into the wound from its attack. My HP dropped to 85%, but the pain meant nothing. The poison Status Effect also did not work on me. Ha! The maids immediately moved to kill the snake, but I stopped them. I still wanted to test my Portals out. The view of the floor came from the Portal’s spell circle on the ceiling, but it seemed like I could not link it to one outside. “Perhaps I should link it to one closer by. Hang on, I know!”

I set another spell circle link right above the second one on the ground. It would keep falling over and over if I tossed it in there! That wasn’t as fun as seeing it splat on the rocky road outside but it’ll entertain me. Perhaps I should throw him out the window myself? That wouldn’t be as much fun, I supposed.

“Urk! Can’t breathe, can’t breathe! Mercy!” Ormr cried out. Right, I was crushing its neck within my grasp. The toy will expire if I don’t ease up, wouldn’t it?

“Mercy? You attacked me first!” I pouted. A part of my arm lost a bloody chunk from where the snake bit me, but I could heal that with a potion I could create with those flowers I stole. “How could you bully a little girl like me?”

“L-Little girl? Please! You’re crushing me with one hand!” The snake’s body contorted and flipped around, like that cat’s tail, but only more erratically.

My Mana channeling completed, and the terrific disharmonized buzz of two Portals emerged to life.

“I’ll let you go, but first, you have to assist me in my test! Yes?” I squeezed harder to encourage an agreement out of the snake.

“F-Fine! Put me down! I-I’ll not bother you again! I swear!”

“Okay!” I raised him up and prepared to throw him into the Portals. “Down you go! Nana, can you fetch the cauldron for me?”

“Waah!” The snake’s voice carried through the Portals as he kept falling through them over and over again. I checked the Portal Skill’s progress on the bar as I cast a Water spell in the cauldron and tossed the flowers inside of it. The Brewing Skill activated, making the water bubble and nearly splash all over me. I really needed to get another hat, I thought. The Portals were ranked E, but if I keep these up as long as I could it would rank up, right? A chime buzzed in my head, but it did not sound like Wisdom was going to agree with me.

— Wisdom’s Intervention activated. Only Souls and Skill Points are able to rank up Portal’s Skill.

“Eh? No fair!” I took a sip of the Healing Potion I crafted. A bright swirl of green and blue spheres flashed all around me as my HP went back up to 100%. Well, perhaps I can keep watching the show. “This shall be your doom! Eternally falling, with no reprieve! Haha!”

My head suddenly felt woozy and I felt Nana’s arms catch me as I stumbled. Curses! My mana pool was running out! Perhaps I could craft a Mana Potion to keep the game going? It was too late, I guessed. Ormr’s body crashed to the stony floor, nearly killing him. Should I eat him? Wait, I should question him! Then I’ll cook him into a meal!

“Well?” I asked him, pulling out two violet flowers. These will restore my Mana Pool just enough to keep me from passing out. “Who sent you to attack me?”

“M-my Master, Sir Balarissss, adventurer,” the snake’s head wobbled. His HP was at 60%, but I was not sure if that was from me crushing his bones or the fall. “He was paid by a certain member of the Church to disssspatch you. I did not know you were a Witch! Forgive me! Forgive me, One!”

“Is a Witch important to Monsters?” I wondered aloud to myself. “So the people behind the assassination attempts are the Church members themselves.”

“A new Witch, yes?” Ormr bowed. “Witches are from the One, as are we. The Light, she hates the One. D-Do what you will with this lowly being.”

Wait, I have heard of the One before recently. I always thought this One God and the Goddess of Light were the same Entity, though it seems that that’s not entirely true. Could it be that they’re fighting over control of this Realm? One who rules over the Humans and the One who rules over the Monsters, locked in an eternal struggle to the death. I grinned mercilessly. What a dance that must be and I get to pull certain strings of it. If these two Gods are at odds with each other, then it made sense why these lowly members of the Church of Light were trying to get rid of me. If a Goddess had to run an entire System and rule over a Race of weaklings on top of a battle with another God it meant she was just too busy. So she simply wasn’t able to smite me instantly where I was because of the One’s meddling. She’s a Goddess, of course she would be able to, right?

On second thought, I didn’t actually want to know the real answer why the Goddess of Light couldn’t get rid of me herself instead of sending these assassins to me to do it for her. It’s too much to tell from just one snake. I glared at it.

“What of your Master? And your labyrinth?”

“He issss from the Sharra Capital, took me away from the thirteenth floor and placed me under a contract,” the snake uttered. “The Ophioloft Labyrinth is in the North, the Humans call it the Leonreim Territory.”

“And will you reveal who I am if you return to him?” I could use him to find the Snake’s Labyrinth, but if he was to reveal my identity things could get complicated for the Spiders. I dodged a splash of water and quickly drank the Mana Potion I crafted. “We can’t have that if he forces you.”

“His Skill hosts many monsters, some less tamed than I am,” the snake’s eyes looked sad. “He will not miss me if I am gone or not. If I was more powerful than he is, then the contract would be nullified.”

“I see,” I think I could see what he wanted. “Then I’ll make you strong enough! Malcom!”

My shadow stirred as the Body Spider began to emerge from it. Such a convenient Skill! He bowed.

“Take him to wherever the Umibōzu is inside the Labyrinth, he’ll whip this snake into shape well enough!” Yes, I’m brilliant! It’ll either kill this assassin or make him a valuable ally. I don’t care either way! The snake’s eyes bulged from horror as the Body Spider regarded him as if he was an insignificant bug, but the shadows swallowed the two and I was left alone with my true target: My bed!

“Lady Charlotte.”

Heavy knocking pounded on the door. I stirred awake and the unpleasant rays of sunlight came through my window. The Body Spiders were no longer in the room, but it was completely clean with no traces of blood from the wound nor water from the cauldron. More knocking invaded my ears while I pouted. Fine. Who wants to attack me now?

“I’ll not entertain you any longer,” the voice on the other side warned me. “I will be entering now.”

The door swung open and Emma entered, much to my surprise. Weren’t you dead or something in a secret basement in the Manor? I meant to explore it, but through the eyes of the Messenger Spiders crawling around down there nothing stood out to me besides that corridor. A Feeder Spider would be required to burrow through the hidden tunnel behind one of its walls. Emma must have had her memory wiped clean of that incident, since she did not seem to be shaken up over it.

She instead looked oddly at the new decorations my room had, but said nothing on the matter. Stone floors and black furnishments, as gloomy and dark as the Spider Worker could get it! Just like I wanted, even if I wasn’t sure how they knew that. I paused my thoughts and regarded the servant. She was still a monstrous Level, three levels below me, yet her true power was sealed underneath that Enchantment debuff. I noticed Nana and Sydney move in before her.

“Wait, are you one of those?” I asked her blankly. Emma looked at me rudely, which answered that for me. She was still a half-elf and not one of mine. “What is it?”

“Your Father has requested you for dinner tonight and the Prince wishes to see you now,” She said. “These two imbeciles will get you ready and take you. You best behave yourself.”

Emma shot me a glare. What if I don’t? I wondered, refraining from grinning evilly to myself. I watched the blue hair swish as she moved to the window, closing the curtains, picking a black feather off of its sill. Even if her mind was under some type of Spell’s control, some of the habits she had still remained. I sat up and yawned, noticing my Mana Pool was at 60%. Eh? My Mana Potion did not fully recharge it before I went to sleep?

— Skill: Familiar: User ‘Charlotte’ must commune with her familiar in order to recharge her Mana Pool faster and restore used Spellpages.

Right, I forgot. I have not used many Spell Pages or Mana during my time here, so I sent Attor away. Humans really do have it peaceful here, don’t they?

“Do you enjoy being in this place?” I asked Emma. “I suppose you don’t have a reason to treat me as a Lady, being in a Human’s manor and all.”

Emma’s face twisted into anger for a moment, but relaxed as she closed her eyes. The pair of Body Spiders both could serve as shields if she decided to attack! I noticed Sydney’s Shield passive abilities activated the second she detected hostility flash within the half-elf and she stood between us as she got me ready.

“I owe…” She shook her head, still looking at the feather. That was my feather! “I owe Master Bohun my life. You best make him proud, Lady Charlotte.”

She gave a scoff and exited the room, but it was half-hearted. So softness resides within thee, O rude servant! I thought, as Nana hefted me up. Gah! Why are all of the Spiders so strong? Whatever love or debt she has because of my Father was not my business! Best of all luck to her and her endeavors, I’d say! However, I wished nothing but the worst for the sleezeball Prince, on the other hand. If I could set a Pact up with Nana or Sydney, I would Hex him to death on the spot! The wordless maids patted me down and soon I found myself in a new dress made of Spider silk.

“I’d say to that guy, ‘bibbity boppity boo! All Toads shall be more handsome than you!’ HA!” I chuckled to myself. “Or would that make all the toads attractive?”

I felt grossed out by either outcome. The maids led me, while I scanned the halls for Malcom. No sign, I peered through several Nobles making small talk. He must be on his way to Tiltoast. There was nothing but to face the Prince head on! A familiar face waited for me outside his room. It was Twig, the two faced kid! I eyed him, making him snap to attention, though his eyes were on my maids. After seeing the mute pair, he turned his attention back to me.

“L-Lady Charlotte,” He stammered. “The Prince and his associate awaits you inside.”

“Associate?” I asked him. Twig’s cheeks turned pink, but he also seemed to be looking for someone in my entourage besides the maid. Ah, I get it. Does he like Hannah more than me now? Or was his blushing and bashfulness all an act to get my trust and gain information? Wait, why was I thinking that?

“It’s a man,” Twig’s voice squeaked at the mention. “He hails from the Leonreim Territory. G-Good luck in there, Lady Charlotte.”

I activated Mage Link out of habit, while the boy avoided eye contact with me. Do my eyes look horrifying while in this state? What he said was true; inside were two smaller signatures of human shaped Light Rune confluences, with bigger sources of Light Runes standing nearby. He brought stronger people with him. The maids opened the door for me and I entered with them. This was bad, I thought as I saw four men inside. We were outnumbered, though the two boys were useless. Their level 30 bodyguards would make things messy if a fight were to break out. There was something odd about them, however, I scanned them.

The pair of bodyguards looked dumb and identical, with their somewhat disproportionate Stats being similar as well, sitting at a mere Rank A. Something seemed off about them, though I could not tell what. They had high levels and strong Classes that several large bandits possessed, however, there was hardly any Light attached to them. Why was that? I turned my attention to the Prince and the blob for a boy eyeing me greedily. This was not good. I knew where this was headed and I did not like it one bit. If I were to kill one, he would not even shower me with experience. Where did it all go then?

“Ah, if it isn’t my dearest Lady Charlotte,” Prince Devon said with that arrogant smile of his. “Finally willing to show your face around here again. I have brought a good friend of mine and soon he will be your good friend.”

“Is this the infamous bastard your Territory boasts about?” The blob spoke through a glob of spittle in his mouth. His voice seemed like it was squeezed out of him.

“Ah, you’re from Leonreim, I presume,” I stared at them both. The Prince looked angry, as if he expected some kind of formality out of me. Tch, I think I was supposed to bow? Human traditions and greetings were difficult for me to remember! The boy instead laughed and nearly choked as spit landed on his rich, Noble lapel. I was too distracted by the boy’s status.

“She’s every bit of a beast like you have said,” Billy clapped his hands, though he backed behind one of the large lumps of his bodyguards for protection when I glanced at him. “I quite like such a rude and uncivilized treat. You two agree, yes?”

“Yes, young Master,” Borr said. He tried to sound as formal as possible, but his brutish nature overtook his voice. Storr agreed, looking at me as if I was a piece of meat. This trio was oddly bloated in power, like the large pieces of fruit and bread on the table. Their level seemed high, but almost too high for soft Humans like them. For one, most of the level 30 Humans I have seen gained their own Height of Heroism, yet these two towers of jelly did not possess that buff. How odd, yet my chances for victory over them in a fight seemed much higher than I presumed. These individuals were food, but how shall I separate them like fruit from the branch? There were also guards, including the one I crushed a while ago, avoiding eye contact with me.

“Lady Charlotte, I know what you are thinking,” Prince Sharra kept his evil grin on his face.

“Oh?” I did not attempt to hide the slyness in my voice, nor the horrifying grin on my face. “Tell me, what is going on in my uncivilized mind?”

“You’ll go to your Father and reject my poor friend, but he and I have already come to an agreement,” the Prince proudly said, moving his arms to showcase the fat Noble kid known as Billy III Leonreim. “You belong to my dear friend, here. He’ll treat you as well as any caged animal could be, I’m sure. You’ll never find a better fiance, ever.”

The two began to laugh at me as if they relished in my disgust. Their schemes were on full display, but I couldn't help but think of going out to the town later today. Dinner with Father, as I imagined, was later tonight, right? On second thought, I noticed the rain pouring outside the window. The weather changed as swiftly as my mood. There were probably other things I could do here instead. Still, the chance to go to the Leonreim territory and get away from my Monster of a Father could bode well. These weak level 30 pretenders would be easy to defeat if I wanted to escape.

“I accept the proposal,” I simply smiled. Their laughing ceased as their ears registered my words. “This would be a wonderful opportunity to unite our Territories.”

“Is your head on straight?” The Prince gawked at me. Billy, was none the wiser and continued to clap.

“Wonderful! Wonderful! Your beauty and smartness begin to shine through all the dirtiness,” he cheered. “We shall have a feast this weekend, yes! A celebration is in order!”

“Ah, wonderful indeed, dear,” I addressed him. “Though I understand if my behavior does not please you to be around me during the party.”

“Oh, how considerate,” Billy howled, grasping at the bread. “We shall make arrangements, but we shall be seeing each other, my dear Charlotte.”

His lisp made it hard to understand him, but as I turned to leave Devon stopped me.

“You seriously do not make sense,” he groaned, as if he was defeated. I did not know his strategy, but it was clear he was in the dark when it came to my own. “Surely you are planning something!”

“This was your idea, no?” I smiled over my shoulder. “Now I must be off, I have studies today and dinner with my Father tonight. Be seeing you very soon, my dear.”

A small flicker of fear spread across Billy’s face the moment his wits connected behind his eyes when he saw me, but he started laughing and eating instead. Prince Devon fumed as the fat Noble patted him on the back, thanking him profusely for setting me up with him. It seemed he wanted me to squirm and lose my temper, but this Charlotte is now a fiance! Whatever that means! The Noble will be good food for the Spiders when the time arrives!

“L-Lady Charlotte?” Twig’s voice came from behind me. I turned to him with a questioning look. “S-Surely you’re not accepting that man, right?”

He froze when I let out a soft chuckle.

“Well, what do you think?” I asked him before I headed off. Let us see what the little Informant Class inside of you can dig up from that question, O Twig! I hope whatever dark secrets you find does not disturb you, should Geer’Sha and Wisdom allow it. A notification was playing in my head, from one of the Body Spiders. I assumed Malcom wished to speak with me, but I was not in a safe place to summon him. So it was time to head to the Library! The Ward shimmered as the bubbling Light magic allowed me and the maids to pass through. Even the door itself was an illusion, a construct of mana runes conjured by the Spider.

“Well, you can come out now,” I told Malcom, who was resting inside my shadow. Instead of Malcom, however, white hair emerged. “Blanche!”

Her face still had a dull look, which led me to believe she preferred it that way. Dark and gloomy was my style, while expressionless and an unreadable face was hers. That was fine by me! She bowed, while I noticed the pink streak in her hair also painted her skin like someone spilled a glass of juice on her.

“It’s been some time since we last saw you, Your Majesty,” she spoke softly as well. We lingered in complete silence for a moment, but suddenly she snapped straight and pulled something out from her sleeves. I caught a glimpse of a vial full of shining lights bouncing inside of it. The contents glowed, despite being obscured by her pale fingers. “I believe preparations for the Labyrinth are complete. We await your return as soon as things are finished on your end, of course.”

“Right. What’s that?” I eyed the bottle she clutched, not knowing what she meant by preparations on my end.

“An item we’ve recovered from those bandits you told us to slay some time ago,” she held it up for me to take.

— Brewing: Experience Bottle M [Rare] obtained. Using this will currently level Charlotte up from level 33 to level 34. Possessing this bottle will grant passage to the Seven Nights Auction.

Well, who was I to say no to such a gift? I peered at the vial’s glass closely. The contents weren’t liquid, but matched the tiny experience point orbs that tended to fall out of a body when it expired. The soul was ripped out, rising in mist from their eyes and mouths, then raining down in a small but wondrous shower of lights. It never occurred to me that you could collect Experience Points and trap them inside of a bottle. A small logo was etched onto the bottle’s side, in the shape of seven Human skulls arranged in a circle pattern on it. How interesting, I mused. If those Bandits were called Man Harvesters, then that would mean they kidnapped and slaughtered their fellow humans and took their Experience Points for themselves. That was something the Spiders were doing, so I guess I could not blame them for creating that large pile of bodies I pulled Blanche’s human host out of. I wondered if the bottle itself contained seven humans worth of experience inside of it.

“Know anything about the Seven Nights Auction?” I asked Blanche. I received a cocked head and a blank stare in response. “I guess not.”

“F-Forgive me, Your Majesty,” Blanche bowed her head. Eh? Why is she doing that? “The Man Harvesters I destroyed all mentioned a certain House Leonreim seeking reparations.”

A small chuckle gathered at my throat, making me grunt and interrupt her.

“Oh, how wonderfully convenient this all is,” I cackled. “You brought me good news, Blanche. I believe I still have unfinished business here, yet this bottle gives me enough of an idea on what I should do to cause these Humans more trouble.”

Blanche politely waited for me to cease my laughing fit, although I secretly wished she could take a page out of my Spellbook and cackle with me!

“Oh, I’m sure you’re aware of it now, but I believe the Church is going to send some of their guys to your- er - Our Labyrinth,” I told Blanche. “Best of luck, O General!”

“Your blessings mean a lot to us, My Charlotte,” Blanche bowed, before sinking into my shadow.

Now that I was alone again with a pair of silent maids who followed me everywhere, I guessed this bottle changed my plans slightly. I popped the corkscrew plug out from it and prepared myself. Down you go, I think! The shining baubles of experience drained out and began to swirl in beautiful green and blue helices around my body. Immediately, I felt a lot better. This was a level up! It’s been so long! I spent way too long killing those pesky bandits and every random human I could scrape up here as well as diligently using every Stat point I gained on myself. I think I deserve a level up finally! That’s not how this works, I heard Wisdom’s Intervention attempt to activate and tell me off, but I said so! Even though at this rate, I feel like the numbers don’t actually seem to matter so long as they’re higher than the opponent I’m facing. It seemed like both the fuzzy butt’s Statuses and my Status were also at odds with the Goddess of Light’s System, since our Levels were higher and still Humans managed to slay several Spiders. Still, a number going up was good, no matter how hard I spun it! The colorful sparks of lights wore off, allowing me to see the changes myself.

— Experience Bottle [Medium] used.

— Charlotte has leveled up to 34!

— Spellpages has increased! A Tier 4 Spellpage has been added.

— HP has increased from 1360 to 1500.

— Attack has increased to rank E! 2750 to 2850/2940 (Master Rank)

— Magic Attack has increased to rank E! 2800 to 2900/2940 (Master Rank)

— Defense has increased! 1320 to 1350/1420 (Prestige Rank)

— Magical Defense has increased! 1360 to 1410/1420 (Prestige Rank)

— Reflexes remains the same. Requires Stat Points to increase. (1560/1700) (Prestige Rank)

— Skill Points has increased from 17 to 117!

The numbers were too large for me to count, but suddenly two new choices appeared underneath the Level Up Screen, making me lean on Nana for support.

— Class has gained a new choice for Weapon Proficiency. Choose between the following weapon classes to be able to wield as a Skill:

- Staff: Used by Spellcasters to increase range and damage at the cost of being cumbersome and slightly slower than wands.

- Scythe: A magical melee weapon that provides monstrous damage and devastating magical attacks, but offers little defense.

- Guns: Non-magical weapons that provide range and heavy firepower by shooting bullets, but are quite slow to reload and require strength to use.

— A Tier 4 Spellpage has been added. Choose one out of the following Tier 4 Spells to prepare for use.

* Blood Lance: Launches a Celestial Blood Lance at a target location. This bolt deals increased damage to targets that are not immune to Chaos and Blood attacks, as well as stealing Health from them.

* Web of Light: Blasts an enormous web shot infused with Light Elemental damage. This attack pierces all defenses and is especially strong against targets that are not aligned with the One.

* Enchant Land: Causes a permanent and massive Forbidden Woods growth to spawn in a generously wide area around the User.

Forget what I said about the numbers; this was a great Level Up! What the Human Realm shall I choose here? For the first choice of weapons, I considered the staff since my magic attacks were what I relied on most of the time. However, since I had wands already I decided that was good enough! If I run out of Magic I was mostly saved due to my Martial Arts Skill, though guns intrigued me. Those pesky things harmed my underlings in the past with relative ease and from range, so what if I used them to be pesky myself? I grinned at the thought, feeling even more smug from the idea of revenge. Guns it is! The little chime in my head confirmed my choice, so I focused on the list of spells next.

These Tier 4 spells seemed like they stemmed from different entities. Blood Lance’s Celestial effect seemed like it was from the Ocean Realm boss while the Enchant Land spell seemed like it was from Geer’Sha. Was I effectively choosing which God I should follow if I select one? This decision suddenly seemed more important, which meant I should use the Tier 4 spells sparingly in order to keep the balance equal between the gods living inside my Labyrinth. I shook my head. That doesn’t make any sense, does it? Geer’Sha was still dormant inside that chamber and I haven’t heard from her in awhile. I still did not know much about the One, though it seemed like it was attached to the Web of Light Tier 4 spell. I owed it a lot for distracting the Goddess of Light, anyways. I smacked my forehead in frustration. Which shall I choose? I suppose Blood doesn’t make any sense for my current setup and Geer’Sha has given me plenty of options for altering the landscape around me. Therefore, that left me with one option!

— Tier 4 Spell selected and prepared. Web of Light has been added to the Spellbook!
