The Village of Hazy Memories was a rural area located in a valley. A deep white mist surrounded the valley where even the rays of the sun couldn't pierce through it. The inhabitants of the village believe in the God, Yaarn the Weaver of Forgotten Memories.
Yaarn only accepted souls into his Kingdom after everyone who knew the deceased forgot about them. The only exemption to this rule was the priest conducting the ritual sending the soul of the deceased to Yaarn. Because of this eccentric Burial Rite procedure the inhabitants of the villages had strict and strange rules.
People of the village weren't allowed to show their faces, so they all wore strange and hideous masks to cover their face. The people weren't given names and they all addressed each other by the particularities of the masks they wore. A person wearing a bull's mask would be called Raging Bison, crow mask would be Sickly Bird, etc.
Parents didn't even know when they conceived a child and there was no such thing as marriages as they would only do it for the sake of increasing the population of the village rather than love. Children would be taken from the mother secretly and the person who took the children was always blind or not allowed to see.
Education for children in the village followed a master and disciple relationship as the teacher was only allowed to teach one on one with the child until the child reached maturity which was symbolized by the donning of a mask on their face. During the process the child was not allowed to see the teacher and vice versa so it would be their own capability to learn.
Once they had reached maturity they would create a mask of their own choosing that fitted with their personality, and they would abandon the master and disciple relationship and go into a school with others who had reached maturity. In the school they were finally able to see their instructors who always wore a mask.
In the school they would study under which career they wanted to be in the future. The most common one chosen for the students would be the normal civilian jobs like farmers, fishermen, guards who watched over the village, etc. The more prestigious pathway would be those who followed the pathway of divinity.

These people would become priests and preachers of Yaarn. They would be able to officially conduct Burial Rites and ceremonies under Yaarn, and be blessed by its godly power. These people were called Forgotten Priests as their power was to distort the cognitive abilities of mortals and the most powerful of them, Apostles of Yaarn, had the ability to erase people or places from the known reality with just a single thought.
Those erased by the Apostles of Yaarn were forgotten by the world like they never existed and even the Apostles would forget about them. Because of this dangerous power the other power of the world usually didn't provoke the village without good reason.

"Ooh Its 'Tragic Face', I heard he will be selected by the temple to become a Forgotten Priest."
Students stared and gossiped at a teen wearing a pitch black mask in the face of despair. He was of average height and wore a dirty monk's gown. He had black prayer beads on his right arm and held a staff decorated with various jewelries. His skin was ashy white with dirty white hair. He was barefooted and looked like a beggar but no one underestimated him.
He was selected to become a priest for the temple which was a prestigious status and would be able to easily punish any one of them in the future if they slighted him. He got his name 'Tragic Face' from the mask he wore and he never socialized with anyone except the priests of the temples.
As the teen stood there in complete silence the noise died around him as a hulking man with a demon's mask with fiery eyebrows walked towards him. The man looked barbaric but he was a monk of the temple, who was tasked with identifying and recruiting students who were fitted to join the temple.
The man walked up to the teen and stared at him, the teen stared back at the man and the man broke the stare down by opening his mouth.
"'Tragic Face' you have been selected to join the temple. We have observed you for the past 4 years and we have identified you as a suitable candidate to become a messenger of the Great One. Do you accept?"
It didn't take long before the teen replied with a dull voice.
"I do accept, to preach the blessing of the Great One."
With the teen's confirmation the mist around the valley gathered towards one place and started rushing towards the teen. The other students were scared and confused by the event but they soon didn't have to be as they all passed out.
"It is great that you accepted such an honor, but the ceremony cannot be done here. When you wake up you'll be in a place that'll be far from familiar with you."
The teen tried to keep conscious as the mist gathered around him, but he soon couldn't as his body grew fatigued and his eyes weary. With the monotone voice of the monk as the last thing he heard his vision went black as his body was carried by the mist to an unknown destination.
