Chapter 3: Strange Happenings

The days blended into weeks as Cyrus settled into life at Sunnydale High. He remained on the periphery of the Scooby Gang, observing their dynamics and subtly gathering information. His integration was slow but steady, and he was beginning to understand the delicate balance of intervening without altering the timeline too drastically.

One evening, as Cyrus was leaving the library after another session with Giles, he noticed something strange. A student he recognized, Jesse McNally, was acting out of character. Jesse moved with an unnatural grace, his eyes darting around as if searching for something or someone.

Cyrus's heart sank. He remembered this episode all too well. Jesse was about to become a vampire, one of the first real tests for Buffy and her friends. The thought of intervening was tempting, but he knew it could have catastrophic consequences.

As Cyrus followed Jesse discreetly, he found himself at the entrance of The Bronze. He watched from the shadows as Jesse slipped inside. Cyrus took a deep breath, steeling himself for what he was about to witness. He knew Buffy would soon arrive, and the events that followed were crucial.

Inside, the music pulsed, and the crowd moved as one. Cyrus kept to the edges, his eyes locked on Jesse. The young man's movements were erratic, his unease palpable. Cyrus felt a pang of guilt. He could save Jesse, but at what cost? The timeline was a fragile thing, and any significant change could ripple out in unforeseen ways.

Buffy arrived not long after, her keen eyes scanning the crowd. Cyrus saw her spot Jesse and the vampire leading him towards the back exit. He followed at a distance, ensuring he remained unseen. Outside, the alley was dark and foreboding, the perfect hunting ground for the undead.

The fight was quick and brutal. Buffy's skills were impressive, her movements a blur of precision and power. Cyrus watched as she dusted the vampire, only to realize too late that Jesse was gone. He had been taken, just as Cyrus knew he would be.

The next day at school, the atmosphere was tense. Buffy, Willow, and Xander were on edge, their concern for their missing friend evident. Cyrus maintained his distance, knowing that his involvement needed to be minimal. He had to let events unfold as they were meant to.

Later, during lunch, he found a secluded spot under a tree to eat. He was deep in thought when he heard a familiar voice.

"Mind if I join you?"

He looked up to see Buffy standing there, her expression a mix of curiosity and suspicion.

"Sure," he said, motioning to the spot next to him.

Buffy sat down, studying him closely. "You've been here for a few weeks now. Haven't seen you around much."

"I like to keep a low profile," Cyrus replied, taking a bite of his sandwich.

"Sunnydale's not exactly the place for that," she said with a small smile. "You never know what might happen."

Cyrus chuckled softly. "Yeah, I've noticed."

Buffy's eyes narrowed slightly. "So, what do you do for fun, Cyrus?"

"Read, mostly. Explore the town. It's got a lot of... interesting history."

"You don't say," Buffy replied, leaning back and crossing her arms. "Ever run into anything... unusual?"

Cyrus met her gaze, his expression neutral. "Depends on what you mean by unusual."

Buffy studied him for a moment longer before nodding. "Just keep your eyes open. Sunnydale can be dangerous."

"I will. Thanks for the heads up," Cyrus said, offering a friendly smile.

As Buffy walked away, Cyrus let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. Buffy was sharp, and her instincts were almost supernatural in their accuracy. He would have to be even more careful around her.

That night, as Cyrus lay in bed, his mind replayed the events of the day. He was walking a tightrope, balancing his knowledge of the future with the need to remain inconspicuous. Each step had to be calculated, each action measured.

He thought of Jesse, of the pain his friends would soon endure. It was hard to stay detached, to let things happen as they were meant to. But he had to. The fate of Sunnydale, and possibly the world, depended on it.

The darkness outside deepened, and Cyrus knew the real battles were just beginning. He was a silent guardian, a shadow in the night, and his mission was only just starting.
