When they got home, after the dinner both mommies had a discussion.
“Dear, I’m exhausted both morally and physically, and I feel you are as well. The current situation is way too time consuming and is getting in the way of our lives. I think it’s time to get a nanny to look after our child, what do you think?” Sophie said.
“Great minds think alike.” Karen gently smiled back and caressed her hand, “Even though she only sleeps and eats, she requires a lot of attention. And carrying her around is quite tiresome. I already made some calls and set up an interview for tomorrow.”
‘You two are just bored with a child that is not yours.’ Alex inwardly snorted while listening to them, ‘You used me as a plaything, showing off to others and now you need me to grow up and start getting good grades so you have something else to show off with.’
But he didn’t really care. Main thing was he’ll get someone new who takes care of his daily needs.
And the new person arrived two days later. Bianca, a large middle aged woman of Hispanic descent, held Alex in her arms.
“Oh, Alex, you’re so big! Can you already sit? Or maybe crawl?” Bianca asked with a smile.
“No, no! She’s still far off. She’s only eight weeks old.” Sophie proudly replied.
“Really? I think my children were so big when they were six months old.” Bianca said, obviously trying to praise, “But what do I know – it was long time ago. And the two of you have four breasts together, so she probably has way more milk to eat. Hahaha!”
“Khem.” Karen coughed while slightly blushing at the primitive language she was not used to, “We don’t breastfeed her. She is getting her special substitute, an advanced soy milk product. We are preparing her to become a proper vegan, just like us.”
‘Wtf? VEGAN? Are you f*cking kidding me?!’ Alex almost jumped out from Bianca’s hands and kicked Karen in the face.
He didn’t ask for a steak, but he was just recently born! He needed a real milk, not a product made of beans mixed with water!
But Bianca just shrugged, apparently this was not the first rich couple she worked for, “Ok. It’s your baby. Although it might be the reason she grows so fast. It’s probably something really expensive.”
It was obviously another try to suck up and compliment the lesbian couple.
“You think something might be wrong with her?” Sophie asked in worried voice. For some reason she kept asking this almost every second person she met.
“How do I know? I’m not a doctor.” Bianca shrugged again.
The discussion soon turned to more regular subjects. Bianca got introduced to their apartment and her duties, and the two mommies soon left while Alex still lie in Bianca’s hands.
“I think we should call a doctor to check on her. Too many people keep saying there is something wrong.” Was the last thing Alex heard Sophie saying and Karen’s ‘mhm’ in reply.
‘No one ever said that! You keep f*cking finding problems when there aren’t any!’ Alex inwardly shouted.
“Hahaha! Your two mamas are too funny!” Bianca laughed, turned the big TV on and sat on the sofa with no intention to do anything useful, “That is why my grandmother always used to say: ‘Bianca! A woman needs a real man in her life!’. She was very old and very smart, you know?”
To Alex’s surprise, the next week passed by without any incidents. His both mommies went to work early and came back late. On few days he even didn’t meet them. But he was more than fine with that.
Besides bringing food, Bianca also didn’t pay much attention to him. She mostly watched the big TV and maybe cleaned up a bit any other day.
The trouble, possibly, came a week after. Karen, hand in hand with Sophie, came home early and brought along an elderly gentleman. Although he looked old, he was extremely energetic, talked quickly and his eyes shot all over the place.
‘A natural pickpocket.’ Alex immediately thought.
But it turned out to be even worse. Apparently the old guy was a doctor of some sorts Karen got to check on Alex. Both mommies didn’t drop the stupid idea about being something wrong with their adopted daughter and found a specialist.
This ‘specialist’, after stealthily inspecting the apartment, was currently inspecting Alex.
“What is it, doctor Schwartz?” Sophie asked in distress, seeing the expert furrowing his brows and sighing over and over.
“Sigh … it is worse than I expected.” Doctor shook his head, “This child has serious signs of early-mid autism. If not treated, she could become … sigh.”
The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.
“Oh, god!” Sophie gasped and began to sob, and Karen immediately hugged her to calm her down.
‘Wtf?! This is a scam! How the hell you don’t recognize it!’ Alex inwardly screamed, ‘There are so many signs of autism, basically every single person has at least one! You, Sophie, as a trained psychologist should know that!’
But either she was too passionately playing the role of a griefing mother, or was just stupid and therefore continued to sob.
“Is there anything we could do?” Karen asked while caressing her back.
“Luckily we found it out early enough, so it is mostly treatable.” Doctor expertly explained, “The problem is, since she is so young, it is extremely delicate job and I’m afraid … I’m afraid I’ll have to do it personally, and we’ll need to meet at least every two days! After a couple of months we’ll see the progress and then I’ll instruct you on how to continue on your own. You know, I have too many patients and can’t spend my life on just one!”
“So bad, huh?” Karen sighed.
“Which one of you is her birth mother?” Doctor asked, “I’ll need your full medical history as well as that of the father. If possible, the closest relatives as well.”
“Well … she’s adopted. We don’t really know where her birth mother is, but we could ask the clinic that helped us.” Sophie weakly said.
“Hmm. It is unlikely they will disclose any information. But I could introduce you to a person, a friend of mine. He’s a private detective and is used to deal with special cases like this one.” Doctor said after thinking for a moment.
‘Oh my god! How stupid can two people really be? This is a double scam! And it’s so obvious! Even Bianca there in the corner is laughing at you!’ Alex was almost desperate, but then suddenly remembered how his clients were scammed over and over during his first life. Not by him, of course, but because of those scams, he even got few jobs to retrieve some items. Apparently rich people had a weaknesses the poor ones didn’t – they could be scammed for buttload of money without realizing it!
“Hahaha! I wonder which one of your mamas is more stupid?” Bianca laughed after the doctor and lesbian duo left, and then grew sad in an instant, “A beautiful, healthy girl … sigh … I hope they won’t feed you some weird medicine.”
But a second later, after throwing herself on the sofa and turning on the big TV, she already forgot about any real life troubles.
Alex, on the other hand, didn’t. He lie on his bed where Bianca left him and stared at the ceiling, trying to think of a way out. Unfortunately nothing reasonable came to mind. While he could explain out loud the scam doctor was pulling and even write it down, although clumsily, he didn’t want to risk becoming a lab rat for the rest of his life.
After calming down and thinking everything over, he came to conclusion that nothing really happened. Even if someone was scamming his two mommies, it had nothing to do with him. The only risk factor was if the doctor turned out to not only be a charlatan, but also a pervert. But in that case Alex would simply crawl over the balcony ledge and ‘start over’ in the life number four. Indeed, he could already roll over and even crawl a little, although he was very careful to not show it to anyone.
With his mind at ease, Alex was ready to embrace his fake treatment. Luckily Bianca’s worries about the good doctor feeding him random medicine didn’t come true. Either the old bastard still had some sense of propriety or just didn’t think of it, but he mostly played some simple games for newborn development that many parents do, except he, of course, did everything in style.
For the mirror games, be brought his own mirrors and three at that! To do the massage, he personally mixed a special oil, that did, of course, cost a lot. The smiling games and the games with puppets also were played in a very special way that surely looked much more expensive compared to what regular mothers do with their children.
Alex had to give it to the old man – he really worked hard for his money, although this was still a scam. He even personally brought Alex out for a walk in the park downstairs – an exercise for which his two mothers lately were too busy. And he did it every time, no matter what the weather was.
The old guy actually was doing his best and tried to think through every move he did. He even brought a special and expensive cradle Alex could be put in when he slept on the balcony. Of course, that cradle was made out of a simple baby carriage and padded with a new cloth.
It all went well until one Saturday doctor Schwartz arrived for the regular visit and brought another crook along with him. The whole family just finished a brunch on the balcony, well – the two mommies did. Alex was still fed the magic soy drink by Bianca.
“So good the two of you came!” Sophie said seeing Karen escorting both old men in and pointed at the sofa for them to take a seat.
Bianca, seeing the show was about to start, carefully put Alex in his cradle and also came in.
“I met Eitan downstairs by coincidence. Turns out he was also on the way to see you.” Doctor said with a wide smile after they sat down, “I was not certain if you decided to hire him, but if you did, I’m sure he’ll do a great job.”
“Actually I already completed the task.” The guy named Eitan said with a similar smile as if the two discussed this subject for the first time, “Although it was not easy and I had to grease some hands in the clinic, I got the name. After two more days I found her, but unfortunately I was too late.”
“What do you mean?” Karen asked furrowing her brows.
“Well, I’m not sure how to tell you this, but the biological mother of your daughter died over a month ago.” Eitan explained.
Even though the conversation was inside, the balcony door was still open. Hearing this Alex suddenly once again felt stabbing feeling below his heart. His vision swam and for the first time in this life tears rolled down his little pink cheeks.
‘Mom died?’ He couldn’t explain how he felt and why, but for some reason these news brought him the sense of emptiness ... emptiness, helplessness and despair.
‘Why? You were obviously a young girl, right? What happened to you?’ Alex thought and tried to swallow the huge, bitter knot that suddenly appeared in his throat.
‘F*ck! Why the hell I feel this way? What does that have to do with me?’ Alex inwardly screamed.
Karen obviously didn’t feel that way.
“But you did get her medical file?” She asked in a plain voice.
“I did. Unfortunately the father is unknown, but you already guessed that when you gave me this task.” Eitan explained.
“Alright, show me what you brought.” Doctor Schwatz said and began to browse the relatively thick file, “Hmmm. Interesting. Her health was remarkably good. That was probably the reason you chose her. How did she die?”
“Well … she committed a suicide.” Eitan replied while sighing.
“What?!” Everyone in the room, even Bianca and also the doctor in a somewhat exaggerated manner yelled out.
“She overdosed on sleeping pills. According to the medical examiner’s report, it was definitely on purpose – she knew what she was doing.” Eitan explained.
