At the age of 9, a young boy went to watch his father's first official boxing match in Minneapolis, The bright lights shined down on the arena, it was so loud he could barely hear himself think, it smelled of B.O. and popcorn, he, his adopted older brother, and his grandfather walked to the front of the boxing ring and wished his father good luck and took their ringside seats. His father is a heavyweight with a rugged face and brown hair; his muscles are the size of watermelons; his opponent is the reigning heavyweight champion, a muscular white man with a shaved head. The bell rang and they both walked towards each other, his father having his hands low and swaying back and forth while the champion took up a defensive stance.
His Dad threw a left hook, then swung his arm quick enough that the champion couldn’t react and the sound that it made when it hit the champion's face the boys knew exactly what they wanted to be when they were older Boxers. 10 years had passed Sully and his Older brother Robert now 18 and 19 Sully standing at 6’7, with tan skin, and lime green eyes, was wearing a pink hoodie with a black rose on it, a pink beanie with some brown hair coming out from the bottom. Robert stands at 6’6 with long dreads, nice brown skin, oak brown eyes, and cargo pants with a dark purple hoodie.
“Shit I can’t wait for the school day to be over,” Sully said, resting his head on his desk. Sully's voice was energetic and chipper even though being bored in the classroom.
Robert said in agreement.
“Yeah, it's boring as fuck.'' Robert's voice is a lower tone, sounds tired, and just doesn’t want to be there. They didn’t have many friends besides one kid named Coby, a larger fellow with long brown hair and light green eyes wearing a Snoop Dog jacket and white sweatpants. Who sat beside them?
“So what's the plan After school?” Coby asked in a higher tone of voice similar to a young Jack black.
“Well, Robert has his first pro boxing match today. I have to go to the gym and train for a little while before we head to watch that but other than that I think we're free.” Sully responded.
“Robert, who are you fighting today?” Coby asked
“Buck tumble, he won 3 out of 3 matches, I’m a little nervous,” Robert said with a yawn.
“Why?” Sully asked him with a confused look on his face.
“He’s 3 in 0 right now, Sully and he’s my first-ever opponent. I’m pretty fuckin concerned!” Robert shouted his tired voice now sounding pissy instead of tired everyone in the class turned their heads to look at them, Coby hid his face but you could hear his laughter, Sully didn't even try to hide he was bursting with laughter. Robert hid his face in embarrassment. The Teacher let out a sigh and was about to say something but the bell rang.
“Finally we can leave this hell hole,” Robert said, standing up and walking out the door with Coby and Sully following close behind. They stopped by their lockers, grabbed their backpacks, and headed out the front door of the school. They started their walk to East Central Gym. Coby and Sully were chit-chatting behind Robert while he was staring up at the sky. Sully took notice and walked up behind him and lightly punched him in the shoulder.
“You good big bro?” Sully asked
“Yeah, you good bro?” Coby chimed
“Just nervous is all, so don’t worry about it,” Robert responded
“Dude you’re worrying about it for nothing. You’ve got the most talent out of any new boxer I’ve seen.” Coby told him.
Robert gave him a side-eye.
“Hey man I’m just trying to cheer you up. I do mean it, however.” Coby told him
“Yeah Rob, you don’t have to be worried about it,” Sully told him with a slap on the back.
Robert let out a sigh and shook his head.
“You guys are right, I can do this!” Robert yelled out and Coby and Sully Started chanting Robert’s name
They continued their walk to E.C.G. but they had to make a quick stop at a local restaurant to grab some food. When they walked inside they were immediately greeted by a female host, she greeted them by their names and walked them to a booth. The inside of the building was lit up with bright lights, the atmosphere was filled with friendly energy, and the inside of the building was covered in nice decorations of old car parts and even memorabilia of old music artists.
“Why do we always have to come to this place?” Coby asked while getting settled at the booth that could fit him.
“Because Sully has a huge crush on one of the waitresses,” Robert responded, Sully slugged him in the chest.
“Shut up, I do not have a crush on a waitress.”Sully scolded him.
A tall waitress standing at 6’2 walked over with dark purple eyes, long black hair, gothic makeup, larger breasts, a bigger waist, and tan skin. She was walking towards their table but quickly turned around after realizing who they were.
“Hey Carman, where are you going?” Coby shouted
“To get your food!”She shouted back.
“But we haven’t ordered yet!” Robert chimed in
“You order the same thing every time!” Sully let out a laugh
“I see why you like her Sully.” Coby teased. Sully’s face went red and he hit Coby in the shoulder pretty hard
“Shut up will you!” He said in a ticked-off voice
Coby rubbed his shoulder, while Robert laughed at the two of them. They chatted for a while until their food showed up. Robert's order was a medium rare steak with a side of steamed vegetables, Coby’s was ten wings covered in honey barbeque sauce and a side of fries, Sully's order was a salad with French dressing and some chicken in the salad. They all told Carman thank you and she nodded and went to check on her other tables.
As they were finishing their meals Robert waved down Carman for the bill, She placed a receipt book on the table, and Robert looked over at Coby and Sully with a confused face.
“What?” Coby and Sully said in sync.
“Take a look at the receipt,” Robert said, sliding the book across the table over to them. They opened the book to see the bill was paid for and a note written on the check and sent Sully up to the front desk. I need to talk with him.
“OOOOOOHHHHHH” Coby started and Robert joined in.
Sully shook his head at them, and they all got out of the booth and walked toward the front of the restaurant Coby and Robert went out the front door but Sully was stopped by Carman.
“W-w-wassup?” Sully stuttered.
“I know you’re busy most of the week but here I am.” Carman said, handing him a piece of paper “I’d like to hang out with you outside of the restaurant sometime.” She said with a smile. Sully’s face lit up red he couldn’t find the right words to say to her so he just said some random gibberish and walked out of the restaurant.
“What happened?” Robert asked
“Yeah, why are you so red?” Coby chimed in
“I think she asked me on a date?” Sully said, covering his face out of embarrassment “and I just ran away from her like a weirdo.”
Coby laughed while Robert rubbed his back. Sully let out a huge sigh while clutching the paper and they began their walk to the gym. When they arrived at the gym an old man was waiting outside standing at 6’4 with his arms crossed, he was wearing a Chicago Bears hoodie and brown jeans, he had long, bushy snow-white beard, well-kept hair, very muscular arms a well-built lower body, and a large beer belly.
“Oh shit,” Sully mumbled.
“YOU TWO ARE LATE!” The old man's deep voice boomed, making everyone walking past E.C.G jump “GET IN THE GYM NOW!” Coby tried to sneak away from them until “YOU TOO Coby! YOU MAY NOT BE A BOXER BUT I'LL MAKE YOU WORK LIKE ONE!” They all walked into the gym, the inside of the gym was almost empty but there were only three other people inside, the inside of the gym smelt of sweat, and B.O, there were used heavy bags along the left side of the gym most of the heavy bags were torn and slightly ripped, next to the bags there are used jump ropes that had lost most of their color, a weight rack was across the room they start at 5 and go up to 100 pounds, there is also some other boxing equipment close to the rack, being headgear, spare gloves, some sweat filled hand wraps, and in the middle of the gym is a large boxing ring for sparing the ropes were new all white and the corner pads where dark blue and they sparkled under the gym lights the white floor of the ring was marked up by the shoes of the members of the gym.
“ALRIGHT!” Everyone in the gym stopped what they were doing and turned to the old man. He looked around the gym and pointed to a short, Italian man, with a very large muscular build, short well-kept hair, and gray eyes, he stopped his training with another guy, the one he was training with had hit mitts, a black shirt that was tight around his arms revealing his muscular arms and wearing gray sweatpants, he also has well kept brown hair and round glasses. “GET IN THE RING, WE NEED ROBERT IN TIP-TOP SHAPE FOR TONIGHT!”
“SOUNDS GOOD MIKE!” he shouted back.
“Good luck Nathan.” the one who was holding the mitts told him.
“Thanks, Andrew.” Nate gave him a thumbs up while walking towards the ring.
“Sully, can you remind me of Nate's position in the gym?” Coby asked.
This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.
“Sure, so in rankings of strength, he's in at least the top 3 here at the gym, potential as a boxer is pretty high but he doesn’t want to pursue the career, boxing style is unique a mix between a brawler and counter fighter, so his ranking in the gym is about a junior level, unlike Robert who is one of our higher ranking members,” Sully explained.
“And Robert's place is?” Coby asked again
“Well Robert is our best boxer here in the gym currently, He has the best chance of becoming a pro boxer, He uses a fighting style that heavily relies on head movement and dodging, but those are two things that he excels at so he makes it look easy, so I would say he’s senior level,” Sully told him.
Coby nodded in agreement. Nate pulled up the rope to enter the ring, he’s wearing a white tank top that showed his massive bicep and shoulder muscles, black shorts, normal red boxing gloves, and normal headgear. Robert hopped over the ropes after getting changed into some dark purple shorts that had pink blended in the middle with white speckles that resembled a galaxy, a black tank top that revealed his bulging biceps and massive shoulder and chest muscles, his signature dark purple boxing gloves with white speckles that resembles a galaxy, his shoes are just dark purple with black bottoms, and normal headgear that made his braids all scrunched up.
Mike hopped into the ring and began to explain the rules “Ok we are going to do only one round we don’t Robert to get hurt too badly.” They both nodded and went to their corners while Mike got out of the ring and rang the bell. Robert dropped his hands to his waist, while Nate pulled his fist to his chest and darted forward. Robert began to hop up and down until Nate closed the distance between them and fired off a jab towards his chest.
Robert turned his body to let Nate's punch hit the corner pad, Robert swung his fist upwards and landed a swift uppercut, the sound was loud it sounded like a whip cracking across the floor. Robert pulled his right hand to his face after landing the uppercut and fired off a body blow to the left side of Nate’s body. Nate stumbled back disoriented, and out of focus. Robert took advantage of this and dropped both of his hands below his waist again and dashed forward. He used a quick combination of flicker jabs. These jabs utilize the boxer's arm like a whip.
The combination landed cracking across Nate's face, Nate tried to fire off a jab of his own but Robert countered it by slamming his left fist into his now unguarded chest, Nate's legs began to shake after Robert's attack made direct contact with his ribs. Nate fell to one knee and Mike ran in and separated them.
“Good work Robert,” Mike told him as he was helping Nate to his feet.
“Thanks, gramps, thanks for the help, Nate.” Robert took off his glove so he could shake his hand.
Nate took off his glove and shook his hand.
“Good fight Robert, I hope you win your debut match tonight.” Robert smiled and hopped out of the ring to check on Sully, Sully was using the hit mitts that Nate had used before, and Coby had them both on and would raise one of his hands to signal for Sully to hit it. Sully’s boxing style utilizes his long arms and his long reach he keeps his right arm in an L-shape and it swings back and forth like a pendulum, as soon as Coby’s hand went up Sully fired off his flicker jab with his right, arm and once the punch landed it sounded like a gunshot.
“Looks good as ever, Sully!” Robert told him. “Now I want to see that straight of yours.”
Sully’s left fist was lifted to his cheek so he could defend the left side of his face but it is also used as his secret weapon. Coby held his right hand up to his face and Sully fired off his left. It was laser quick and the sound it made was as loud as thunder. The mitt slammed into Coby’s and he let out a small grunt. Sully pulled his left arm back to his cheek then fired off more flicker jabs to his face.
“Alright, that's enough!” Mike shouted at Sully. “Get ready to head out you three, the fight is in eight hours.”
Sully stopped punching the mitt Coby was holding and took off all his gear.
“So me and Coby have eight hours off?” Sully asked, Mike nodded, and Sully responded “Ok cool we’re going to go run around town for a bit and will meet you at the stadium.”
Coby and Sully walked out of East Central Gym after Sully had changed back into his regular clothes. They walked into town, stopped at a gas station, and grabbed some snacks. Sully grabbed a water bottle and a beef stick, and Coby grabbed a sandwich and a water bottle as well. The total came to eight dollars and ninety-four cents. They walked out while talking about Robert and how he was going to win his match tonight. A couple hours had passed and they discussed what they should do for the next four hours.
“We could just head over there and wish him luck in the locker room,” Sully suggested
“Nah, Then we would just be sitting in the seats for four hours. I don’t want to do nothing for four hours,” Coby said.
Sully nodded in agreement. He threw away his garbage. They had realized they were right next to their favorite restaurant they usually visit and Coby had suggested they go and talk with Carman since Sully made a huge fool of himself. Sully reluctantly agreed and they walked to the restaurant but stopped by a nearby alleyway after hearing someone scream.
“What was that?” Coby asked
Sully responded with, “Someone screaming?”
They heard it again and realized immediately it was a woman. They darted down the alley to see two grown men pinning Carman to the wall, Her nose was bleeding and her eye was swollen. The man on the right was a local gang member by the name of Shark. He had dark red hair that was spiked up and several scars across his tan face, he wore a biker jacket with sleeves cut off, black jeans to match his biker jacket, and black steel-toed boots. The guy on the left was Stone, a bald white guy with a biker jack with the sleeves and the name of their gang on the back, the Eastern Eagles, blue jeans, and white and blue Nike shoes that had blood spots on them.
Coby whistled, getting their attention.
“LOOK WHO IT IS!” Shark shouted.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH HER!” Sully yelled his voice filled with rage, he took a step forward, but his chest was met with Coby’s arm.
Shark let go of Carman and let her fall to the ground “NOTHING YOU KIDS NEED TO WORRY ABOUT!” Shark turned to Stone and nodded to the side, Stone started walking towards the two.
Sully was going to meet Stone in the middle of the alley but Coby looked at Stone with a glare that made the sun feel cold. Coby began to walk towards Stone and they met in the middle of the alleyway their stomachs touching one another. They stared each other down and Sully waited for one of them to make a move.
“Stone, what are you waiting for, beat his ass already!” Shark called out to him.
Stone wrapped his arms around Coby’s large waist, but Coby responded with a swift headbutt. Stone's arm pulled back to his face, his hands were drenched in blood. Coby didn’t give him any more time to react and slammed his hands into Stone's forehead. This covered stones eyes and he grasped down on top of his head. Coby pushes his arm down sending Stone backward, Coby slams Stone’s head into the concrete alleyway floor. The back of Stone’s head began to leak with blood.
“STONE!” Shark yelled, “YOU FAT FUCK ILL KILL YOU!!!”
Shark reached into his pocket, pulled out a switchblade, and charged at him. Coby stood over Stone’s unconscious body and waited for him to get close, and once he was close enough he fired off a quick punch hitting Shark in the chest making him fall forward and drop the switchblade. Coby kicked it away, and Shark began to cough.
“You… Son of a bitch.” Shark mumbled, Coby walked over to check on Carman.
Sully ran over and joined Coby on the floor. Carman was beaten and bruised.
“Is she ok?” Sully asked, Coby checked her out.
“HOW THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW???” Coby exclaimed
Coby could hear Shark getting up behind them. Coby stood back up and turned around to see Shark picking up the switchblade. Coby put his fist up for another fight but Shark fell forward unconscious, Coby didn’t drop his guard because someone was standing behind Shark. Coby and this new person just stared at each other. He stood at 6’0, had black curly hair that was just above his eyebrows, was wearing navy blue jeans and a black hoodie, and had light brown skin.
“Woah relax big fella that's my sister Carman,” He told him.
“And why should I believe you, huh?” Coby said not letting his guard down.
“Check her wallet, there is a picture of me, her, our father, and our mother.” He told him
Sully checked her pockets but found no wallet. He got up for a second after propping her head up on his shirt and checked shark pockets then Stone pockets and found her wallet. He opened it up to find the picture of all four of them.
“He’s good Coby,” Sully told him.
Coby lowered his hands and walked back over to Carmen. She was breathing steadily but she was bleeding badly. Sully pulled out his phone and called nine one one. They arrived after thirty minutes of waiting Sully didn’t leave her side while Chris thanked the both of them for helping his sister and once she was moved into the ambulance he hopped in and went with her to the hospital. Sully was in tears Coby rubbed his back to calm him down.
“Hey I know you’re upset but we only have about…” Coby checked his phone for the time. “An hour and fifty-four minutes.”
Sully shouted in confusion “WE WERE HERE FOR THREE HOURS AND SIX’S MINUTES!”
Coby nodded and Sully whipped away his tears and they bolted for the middle of the town. They arrived in a nick of time with ten minutes to spare so they ran to the back of the building and were stopped by a large bodyguard.
“What are you two doing back here?” He questioned them.
Sully responded, “We are here to see one of the fighters.”
“Oh yeah? Which one?” He asked
“Robert is his older brother, and we need to wish him good luck!” Coby told him
“Oh yeah right, Robert is black while he’s light-skinned.” He said.
“IT’S CALLED HE’S ADOPTED DICK!” Sully exclaimed.
Sully took his boxing stance and the bodyguard reached for his taser on his side but they were interrupted by the door behind the bodyguard slamming open.
“INSIDE RIGHT NOW YOU TWO!!!!” Joseph shouted at Coby and Sully, They walked inside Coby sticking out his tongue and Sully flipping him off. “I’m so sorry about them sir,” Joseph said while bowing his head. Sully and Coby were chuckling while walking to the locker room but were met with swift punches to the top of the head.
“OW!” Sully and Coby shouted, grabbing onto their heads.
“You two are incredibly late, and you were causing trouble with the bodyguard. HE WAS JUST DOING HIS JOB!” Joseph proceeded to be berated while walking into the locker room.
Sully looked at the floor and apologized while Coby complained and tried to explain why they were in the right, but Joseph wasn’t having it. They all walked into the locker room to see Robert in his gear. His boxing gear consisted of dark purple shorts that had pink blended in the middle with white speckles. It resembled a galaxy, his signature dark purple boxing gloves with white speckles that also resembled a galaxy, his shoes were just dark purple with black bottoms, and his dreads were put up into a ponytail. Mike was wearing a black t-shirt with E.C.G. on the back, and so were Andrew and Joseph.
“Looking good big bro,” Sully told him while giving him a thumbs up.
“Hope you're not nervous Robert, you’re going to kick this guy's ass!” Coby held up his hand for a high five. Robert walked over and gave him a high five that sounded so loud that it echoed.
“Thanks you guys, I needed that,” Robert said with a smile
“That's what we’re here for bro,” Sully told him, Coby nodded in agreement.
“ALRIGHT! You two to the stands we got 5 minutes before the match starts.” Mike shouted. Coby and Sully walked out of the locker room and sat in the stands. “Are you ready Robert?” Mike asked.
Robert took a deep breath in and nodded. Robert walked out the door with Mike, Joseph, and Andrew following close behind. They could hear an announcer introducing Robert.
“IN THE RED CORNER WE HAVE THE ROOKIE ROBERT SHEIL, HE STANDS AT 6’6 AND FROM AND I WISH I COULD SAY SOME NICE THINGS ABOUT HIM BUT I GOT NO INFO ON HIM, ACTUALLY I HEARD FROM AN ANNOUNCER IN THE AMATURE LEAGUE HE’S HAD A PERFECT RECORD!” Robert Could hear Sully and Coby shouting and cheering him on in the background. As he walked out he held his hand up to the sky, everyone in the E.C.G. knew exactly what that meant. “I WILL REACH THE TOP.” The announcer began to announce his opponent. “BUCK TUMBLED HE STANDS AT 6’5 AND HAS A RECORD OF THREE WINS AND ZERO LOSES, ONE BY KNOCK OUT THE OTHERS BY TOWEL, WILL THAT CHANGE TO NIGHT, WILL JUST HAVE TO SEE!” The rest of the crowd roared for Buck.
As he walked out, he had a very large muscular build making all of his muscles bulge out, he wore a brown cowboy hat, he wore black shorts with brown tumbleweeds stitched onto them, and his gloves were brown with sheriff stars on top of the knuckles, his boxing shoes resembled cowboy boots and are dark brown in color, shaggy black hair and a scruffy beard of the same color, and he has baby blue eyes. As he was walking out he was line dancing to his walk-out music.
When he got to the side of the ring he ducked under the ropes and had his coach take off his hat. “Thanks, partner,” he said with a Southern accent. His coach popped in his mouth guard for him and he bit down on it, setting it in place. He rolled his neck making it pop, he eyed Robert with eyes that said “I’m going to win and show the people here that I’m worthy of being a pro.” Robert stared back with “I won’t lose not to you or anyone else.”
