Chapter 2

Chapter 2

.::. 1 Year Ago. .::.

So you ask, What is this challenge you speak of? That you give yourself such an advantage in?

Coding. Duh.

...

Fine I'll tell... The truth is, I don't really know the details...

I stepped into the club room. Our club was given permission to use the Computer Lab after classes were over of practice before the competition. Before that we used an empty classroom with a few old crap-tops connected to a slightly higher spec desktop for extra processing power. These computers had to be at least a century old, as old as the old geezer ... *cough* I mean principal *rolls eyes*. I mean, he refused our club any money to or actual computers, and last year we were refused the right to use the Computer Class's room. It was only when he took a vacation due to medical problems this year (I wonder what happened to him  ) that we were able to get the new replacement principal to let us use it. Have I ranted long enough?

"Hey! Vinny! pull up the competition site on the main screen." I casually called to Vincent as I strolled into the room.

The room had a single, medium sized screen in the front.

Doing as I had asked, "Hmmh" he grunted. What did I say about socially lacking? He is the epitome of it.

Pointing at the top of the screen, "Click on the specifications tab over there," I mumbled. Vincent heard it and proceeded to do as I said. The page that loaded now contained the information of the details regarding the contest, released only about 2 minutes prior to us loading it.

"Alright, we got the details." I paused an read around a bit. "It seems that this year we have to program a micro-controller to preform some task that interests the judges. Soldering stations and a large variety of electronic parts will be available. This years competiton will have competitors using microcontrollers to perform a task that will catch the judges interest. The micro-controllers have the power of the most powerful of today's PCs compacted into a small DIP silicon chip. For further Specs. on these micro-controller, Click Here, blah blah blah... ah here we go. The Micro-controllers will be programmed using C#. Guides and tutorial books will be available duri..."

"Uhm.... Whats C#?" Sam who had been waiting quietly in the corner of the room spoke, interfering with my reading.

"Oi, I was reading! Don't interrupt me!"

Sam rolled his eyes. "You're just saying that because you don't know what it is!" He squeaked.

"Mhh", Vincent grunted in agreement.

"..."

"Of course I know what it is! It's... a programming language!"

"See! You don't know what it is! That much is already obvious!"

"Gah... Then you explain what it is!"

"Ahh.. Uhh..."

"Its's the same for you!" I complained

Sam's face twisted. He was upset, and the water would soon start to flow.

The door opened and dragged on the floor. "Hey, don't start crying in the classroom, I was on cleaning duty today and if it isn't spotless tomorrow, I'm in deep shit", K announced his entrance.

"Oho, finally here. Thought you'd still be stuffing you face back at the dorms" I remarked, remembering the party that someone had in the dorms last night. I was laughing on the inside, but held as straight of a face as I could.

"Hey, don't bring that up! It was a one time deal!" he cried, punching me on the shoulder.

I held my stinging arm and waited for the pain to subside, which didn't take long, as his heart had not been into it when he struck me. I chuckled and began to order my army as the men had finally assembled.

"Alright, alright, settle down. Now, Men! Stand at attention!" I shouted, but quietly as to not arouse the suspicion of any wandering persons, as the halls were emptied, but only to a certain extent, and deepened my voice.

"Yes, Sergeant!" they replied in unison, except for Vincent........ Introvert.

The army that will assist in the overtaking of the world was coming together nicely.

"So, we now, with the help of corporal Vincent, know that the this mission will have us traversing through uncharted territories. One year ago we failed to bring home the gold, or any metal, for that matter, and must win this year.

We are going to start Operation Infiltrate the GIN Computer and Extract useful Data..."

"You names suck," K insulted me b

"You suck. Eggs. *

Private K, I want you on Security. Private Sam, I want you on guard. "

We had designed a few positions for each of us to hold. Security protected us from being traced as we hacked into computers and networks. The guard stood watch to protect the ones within the room from prying eyes. Of course, K and Sam fit those two roles, respectively, with great precision.

"Corporal Vincent, your job is to make it over to the school's computer mainframe. In that room, the GIN*** recently installed a computer hooked up to their private network for student research. I couldn't get permission to use it, so you must plug this wireless dongle into the computer so we can 'borrow' it and when I give you the signal over radio, unplug it and leave."

Vincent was great for stealth. Despite his large build, it was like magic. No one saw or heard him. Must be his military training. Or his spy training, depending on which country he had worked for.

"Questions?"

Sam raised his hand immediately.

"Yes Sam, ask away." In my head I rolled my eyes.

He flinched. "Is all this really necessary? I.. uhm.. don't like it... It sounds really... scary.... can't we just use the normal net?"

Of course not! The normal net's for losers!

"I shall tell you the truth. Once long ago I uncovered a book while searching... for something... and it contained in it the secrets of an ancient concept that went by the name of.... C#." I began to tell the story as if I had discovered something monumental. For all I knew, it could be.

"Then show us! We'd have a big advantage over the others with that."

I took a pause for dramatic effect.

Damn, I'm cool! I imagined how I looked at the moment. I was having another one of my daydreams... They come and go.

And then I tried to remember what had happened to it, and froze in shock.

"... Sadly I can't. The book is at my parents house and we... aren't speaking to each other all that much... I also don't remember much of what I learned because my computer was taken away soon after I found the book and I forgot everything... Recently the thought had popped into my head. I tried looking for it on the internet, but nowhere could I find any mention of it."

"So that was useless and we listened to you for nothing?"

"Of course not!" I cried. "It's a backup plan in case this yields no results."

Plus, this seems a lot more bad-ass than getting the book.

As if he had read my mind, K put his hand to his face. Then he moved it away from his face and slammed it back to where it had just been. The sound could be heard throughout the halls. His über face-palm will forever be held in the world records.

"Now, where was I... About a two hundred years ago the new internet networks using fiber optic cables came out. Everything that did mot breech the new policies was allowed to stay. Sites that the government wanted to be taken down were, and confidential information was stored using the the old network, while the availability of the old network to the public was also cut. By hacking into this computer that is connected to the GIN's network, because they took hold of it for its convenience, we can gain access to old files and find out more."

I pretended to wipe sweat from my brow.

"Well your rants do actually make sense some of the time!" K joked and smiled. The grin, however, was wiped off his face as he noticed my expression

Eyes roll once more. This idiot...

"Shut it.

Since the computer is mainly used by the students for research, even though when they are using whe computers they are always watched by teachers, they restrict certain privileges, such as viewing certain files. We should still be able to find what we are looking for."

Pausing to look at them, I finally decided to continue.

"Men, get ready!"

"Roll out!" **

"Yes, Sargeant!" they replied in unison, all but Vincent, who gave a simple:

"Hmhh!"

*Ostrich eggs...

**No, they can't turn into anything else, without serious dis-figuration, and injury.

***GIN = Government Intelligence Network (for the lack of a better name. I need to level my 'Naming sense'...)

Please don't hate (like people will listen). It's my first fanfic, and story that has been made available to others to read for that matter.

Also, I do read this over myself when I finish writing, but may not catch all of the mistakes (I have no pr). If anything doesn't make sense, please leave a reply and I will explain it or fix it if it's a mistake.
