Chapter 5 : Unexpected Visitor

Our face had drastically changed and looked nothing like what it used to be. It wasn't just the inhuman changes that appeared, but the entire base of the face had changed. I didn't look like my sister or any of my family members I had expected to look like if I ever were to turn into a girl.

We looked to be much older as our face was well-developed with sharp cheekbones and eyes that seemed to give off a glare. Our nose was straight, and we had full lips. The hair color and eyes remained the same.

The only thing that was different was that our hair now reached our waist, and the whites of our eyes had changed from white to black. Bloody red marks ran down our left eye, giving off the appearance as if we were bleeding from it. Our ears were elongated and were much longer, and Our height had also increased because the ground was much farther.

Damn, that's hella scary. I thought as we continued to look at ourselves.

The face that looked human but at the same time didn't. It had triggered a sort of unconscious fear in me that caused me to want to step back.

Our mouth opened, showing the four fangs on the top of the jaw and also the two at the bottom.

"Excellent, now I look more the part of an ancestor.” She said, her tone exuding with pride.

She tossed the mirror to the side as she walked towards the door.

Well, I guessed that beauty was in the eye of the beholder, but anyway, damn, this has been a long day of twists, turns, and weirdness. How did I even get in this situation anyway?

As I moped to myself, my roommate walked out of the room and back into the corridor, apparently ready to leave. Seeing as I had nothing to do but being left with my thoughts. I decided to gather more information by talking to my new friend? Roommate? I needed to find Something to call her if I was going to be stuck with her like this.

[So--] I began to say but was unable to finish my sentence as my roommate suddenly stopped and became more on guard, emotions such as fear and malice radiating from her.

[What’s wrong?] I asked, but she didn't answer me but lowered us closer to the floor in a crouch.

I was confused as to what was suddenly happening, but that confusion didn’t last for long.

A feeling that made my hair stand on end slowly reached me and caused our body, which hadn't reacted to anything since I got into this world, to respond for the first time. Our body shivered, not from the cold, but from fear, as a chill went down our spine.

Before I could comment on the growing uneasiness, my roommate shot forward in a sprint toward the end of the corridor, towards the wall.

[Hey, wait-]

We smashed through the wall and got outside, but we were still about three floors high, so we plummeted to the ground right afterward.

Blinding light erupted from the building we were in, along with a powerful shock wave that sent us flying.

We crashed through one of the rooftops of the house below us and spun several times in the air before landing on the ground with a 'thud'.

Our body felt wrong in so many places that I couldn't think for a moment because of the influx of information telling me everything that was wrong with the body. There was no pain, however, so I was able to recover quickly to start asking questions.

[What the hell was that!?] I said in a half shout.

[Something annoying.] She responded in a cool tone as she twisted our body around to lay on our back.

Our body within the few seconds I used to talk to my roommate, had almost fully recovered because I didn't feel as much wrongness as when we landed.

We got up and stood to our feet when our legs were fully regenerated and looked at the direction we flew from.

There was a small chunk of roof missing from the rooftop we went through and behind that house. The building we were in, and that should've been visible to us because of its tallness, was gone. Apparently, it was erased by the powerful explosion that just happened.

[No, seriously. What's going on? what the heck was that--]

[Hush, be quiet.] She silenced me as she slowly looked around.

Arrows of light came flying at us from above, but my roommate easily avoided them by sidestepping.

"Is hiding and attacking from afar all that is left of the order knight's honor? Show yourself so you do not embarrass yourself more than you already have.” She said contemptuously.

A few seconds passed before we heard a voice.

"Well, now? Since when did blood suckers worry about our honor?" a gruff voice sounded as a man in armor stepped out of an alleyway.

He had short black hair and looked to be around the age of someone like my dad.

He was tall and looked to be muscular, judging by how big his armor was. I was sure if we were to stand side by side, he would be about two to three heads higher than me. Well, considering how short I was and how this new body closely matched the old one by height, that was understandable.

Nodding to myself, I then moved to the next glaring question, that is. Who this person was, and Why was he glowing?

The man glowed with a shimmering light that was almost blinding by how bright it was. The light was coating his entire body like an aura.

I was sure this wasn't caused by my night vision, considering I was able to distinguish things that were giving off light and things that didn't.

The man walked closer while he drew his sword that was at the hip.

[Ehh… who is this?] I asked my roommate, who was glaring and standing, ready to fight the person in front of us.

[His name is Thomas, and he is an 'order knight' in an organization that is dedicated to destroying the undead.]

[Wait, you actually know him?] I said, confused because I was under the impression that my roommate was born at the same time I came to this world, so there was no way that she would possibly know anybody, right?

And on that topic, how did she know the things that she did if she was born about an hour ago? I mean, she could speak fluently and was able to do acrobatics that I couldn't imagine doing if I had control and I was older. So, where did she learn to talk? And how did she know about this guy?

The man stepped close enough that the light he was emitting was able to reach us, and once it lit up our face, he froze in his tracks, and his eyes widened in shock.

[Yes, I do know him, in fact, however, not directly.]

“Mia?” He gasped as he looked at us with shock and disbelief.

[Because you see. I was born from all the people who had died in this place, and as such, I have all their memories and experiences. And as luck may have it. It seems that I have the appearance that may just help us survive this situation.]

The man stepped back.

“Impossible! How?.... no, this must be some sort of trick!” He said hysterically as he pointed his silver sword at us.

[Quickly kill him now while he is distracted!] My roommate said to me with urgency.

I blanked out for a moment, unable to understand what she was asking of me.

[What?]

[I said you should kill him while we have the chance. His allies might show themselves any minute now.]

[I can't do that!] I blurted in a panic.

Kill? Was she serious? I had always been a person who would regret killing even a fly or any small insect. At best, I would capture them and set them free outside. I did not see myself killing anything bigger than a bug, let alone an entire human being. And how was I supposed to kill him? You’re the one who was in control of the body right now.

[What do you mean you can’t? Are you not related to the gods? Killing a single insignificant human shouldn't be a problem for you.] She said with impatiens as she looked nervously at the raving man who was talking to himself.

I mean, even if one day I might be able to end someone with just a single thought, that day isn't today. I was just a kid not that long ago. At best, the thing that I could do that could be considered somewhat godly is that ‘essence vision’ thing. I did not know anything else, especially one that could kill someone. And even if I did I couldn’t.

[I don't know, okay! I'm just like you…. I…. I just became an apostle recently, so I don't know what I'm doing. I can't kill him!]

[………] Though she didn't say anything, I could feel disappointment and frustration coming from her.

The man stopped and took a stance with his sword as he looked at us with anger.

“Who are you?” He asked, his voice cold as ice.

“……”

My roommate didn’t answer but seemed to be preoccupied by Something on her mind.

The man stepped closer. His aura glowed much brighter than before.

“I asked who you are!?” He bellowed.

[Ehh… shouldn't we say Something?] I asked.

She ignored me but seemed to have made up her mind because she opened our mouth to speak.

“Hmph, you seem to already know. What? Has Liz’s idiocy rubbed off on you to the point you can’t tell who I am? Thomas?” She said playfully as she wore a delicate smile.

My roommate’s words caused the man’s expression to falter and his aura to burn less brightly.

We stepped forward and casually walked closer to the man.

“I know you must be confused right now, but trust me when I tell you I am the person you think I am. I….. I may look a little different, but I’m still the person whom you lost to in crusader kings not a few nights ago. You’re terrible at that game, you know that? Thomas?” She said with a bittersweet tone as she continued to get closer.

The man stepped back and began to retreat as uncertainty and wariness colored his face.

“Where are the others? Where is Alice? Are they not here with you? I'm certain they would be just as surprised as you are when they look at me.”

"Stay back!" he yelled as he pointed his sword at us again. His face, now cold as a mask, stared at us with emotionless eyes, but even I, a seventeen-year-old kid who didn't have much life experience, could tell that he was conflicted.

We stopped and stared at him with a smile, which caused him to be more shaken up.

He took a deep breath as he stood straight and held his sword higher, pointing it at our face.

“Mia Charlotte de Bourbon, as one of the priestesses of the Sisterhood of Saint Teresa and a knight of the church of order. You should know full well of the code that states that 'no brother or sister of humanity should suffer the fate that you’re going through right now. Please don't resist so that I can put your soul to rest and end the torment you must be going through.”

“I see; you don't have to worry. I will not struggle or do anything else besides talk. I simply wonder if I can’t see and say goodbye to the others before I’m gone for good. I’m certain Liz must be blaming herself for what happened.” She said with a sorrowful voice.

I wanted to give her a round of applause for the acting she was putting up. If I wasn't able to feel what she was feeling, I would have fallen for this act, too, because it looked too genuine to be fake. However, all I could feel from her heart was malice and frustration, like she wasn't getting the outcome she wanted.

"They're not here. I’m sorry, but I don’t think it will be possible for you to meet them.”

The frustration vanished, and a glimmer of hope could be felt in her heart.

“You mean to tell me that you’re here by yourself?" She said, concerned, but her true feelings leaked out in the form of a giggle in the end.

“…..”

"Ohh, my apologies for the laughter. You see, I never pegged you as someone who would do Something so foolish as to fight a vampire alone. Alice would be more likely to do it, but certainly not you. What was the plan if another vampire was here instead of me?” She said with glee as she wore a huge grin on her face.

The man put up his guard again as he looked at us with murderous intent.

"Who are you?" He said this time, his voice even more serious and deadly than before.

“I already told you I’m Mi--”

His sword flashed, causing us to duck and roll to the side as we barely dodge a powerful attack that sliced the building behind us.

“Don’t you dare try and utter her name or anyone else's name for that matter? What I want to hear from you is who the fuck you are and your relations with everything that happened here. For instance, why you look like her and how you know so much about our personal lives. And don't try to lie because I know it has Something to do with the corpses that disappeared.” He fumed as the top half of the house behind us fell to the ground, making the ground rumble.

[Hey, why are you making him angry? Wouldn't it have been better to have kept up the lie till we escaped?] I asked with concern and fear, seeing that we were pissing off a guy that could cut a house in half clean off with a single strike.

[Hmph, if he is by himself, escaping him shouldn't be that hard.]

[Then why aren’t we doing that?]

[Because it’s almost daytime. We can't move around in the sunlight, and if he were to track us down after we had escaped, we'd easily be sitting ducks waiting to be slaughtered.]

[So what are we going to do?]

[Easy, kill him before the sun comes up.]

I got the urge to protest that we should at least not kill him, but seeing as he was ready to kill us. I figured it would be best if I became neutral and kept my mouth shut. We were not in a position to be at our leisure and fight someone with the intention of not hurting them. And as a matter of fact, could we even fight this guy?

[Can we win though?]

[Hmmm……. I can’t guarantee, but most likely.]

[You’re not sure?]

[This is my first time fighting another, and all I have to go off of is experience and knowledge provided by others. I can’t guarantee to win when I myself am still naïve in the art of combat.]

[Really? Then, If you're so unsure, then why are you smiling?]

Our mouth had moved, and we were baring our teeth in a terrifying grin.

[Am I now?]

She reached to our face and touched the grin that was there.

[Hmmm, I suppose that’s an unladylike thing to do.]

Unlady- like huh? Wouldn't that be a bit rich coming from someone who was standing in the street completely naked?

She changed our expression and made it neutral again.

[I can't promise to win because I find making empty promises to be disingenuous and deceitful. Which are things I hate--]

[But didn't you lie to this guy, though?] I cut her off.

[In truth, I didn't. I am Mia, and many other people as well. Anyway, that's beside the point. What I was getting at was that I was going to need your help in fighting him.]

She looked at the man Thomas, who was glowing more and more, and somehow, he had created a small stream of wind to flow around him. He glared at us with rage as he continued what I assumed was a power-up.

[What do you expect me to do?]

[To keep him at a distance with your magic while I find an opening to attack. Normally, I would have done it myself without relying on another’s assistance. But since I can’t use magic right now as I am too immature in the art and lack knowledge about my affinity. I will have to rely on you to defend my back.]

Magic? I had completely forgotten to ask the goddess about it, but it seemed that it existed in this world. I found that to be one of the good news that came from my reincarnation situation, but there was an immediate problem.

[Ehhhhh…. I can’t--] I began, but she cut me off, too enthusiastic to even listen to me.

[Here is the plan: we will take advantage of his ignorance about Ancestors. He currently shouldn't know that we are able to use magic, unlike normal vampires that normally can’t. I'll try to tire him out, and when his defense is lowered, I need you to hit him with your strongest technique, and we'll see if he still lives after that. If he does, I'll end him by landing the finishing blow.]

[Like I said, I can't--]

[Or maybe it would be better if we fought him head-on instead of running away and trying to achieve a convoluted plan?]

The hell? We were gonna die if we did that because I can’t use magic.

[Will you just let me talk--]

[Yes, you're absolutely right! Plans are worthless. We should give Thomas the death of a warrior. Additionally, defeating him this way will allow us to drink--]

[Will you just listen to me!?] I shouted.

This seemed to give her pause because she stayed quiet and listened.

[…….?]

[Good, thank you. I was about to tell you before you interrupted me multiple times, but I can't use magic.]

When I said that, all the enthusiasm left her, and all that was left was confusion and disbelief.

[Are you…. Not a spirit?]

I sighed internally at this girl’s inability to listen. I was sure that I had told her multiple times that I was reincarnated, and she herself even referred to me as a soul once, so why was she calling me a spirit again? Unless spirit meant Something completely different than the fantasy creatures I was imagining?

[What’s a spirit?]

[….]

[….]

Silence fell between us as we both became confused. She was confused about Something, and I was confused about her confusion. We stayed quiet for several seconds, and I started to think that she'd forgotten about the fight.

[Are you some kind of demon, perhaps?]

Why did she jump to that!? What about me was demonic?

[No, I'm not; at least, I don't think so...... Anyway, please tell me what a spirit is.]

She sighed with our physical body as she began to explain.

[…… All incorporeal beings that are not undead or demonic are classified as spirits. You claimed to be reincarnated, but you’re not necessarily alive since you incarnated into me, an undead. As such, you're not Something that could be called a soul.]

[Ohh, I see; I guess I am a spirit then.] I said, thankful for the information.

[………How long have you been a spirit?]

I paused, the question taking me back a little since I didn’t know why she suddenly wanted to know that. I answered honestly because I didn’t see a reason to lie to her.

[A few hours to a few days? Maybe? I’m not sure because I don’t know how long I was in the goddesses’ domain.]

[Did you not know how to use magic while you still had a body?]

[Actually, there wasn't any magic in the world I came from, so no.]

[What race were you when you were alive?]

[human?]

[how old.]

[seventeen.]

[Even now?]

[Yeah?]

[……] She sighed before talked again.

[I see, which means you’ll be completely useless in this fight, huh?] She said with disappointment.

I didn't respond because, well…... she was right. I was completely useless here.

She sighed and focused on the guy in front of us. Though there was a bit of annoyance coming from her, she seemed to not be mad but more cautious.

“I’m surprised you still haven’t run away yet but stayed and waited for me. Are you that confident of defeating me?”

"I'm surprised that's all the power you can muster up. Were Liz and Henry the only donors to your suicide mission?"

He did not respond but only clicked his tongue before he launched himself at us.
