Chapter 1: Don't tell me what I can be

Yes by the way, I did steal the whole black fog thingy from Howling Thunder I'm sorry forgive me it was a cool skill >.<

BTW this is also my first time using tables? or whatever so I have no idea how it's gonna turn out... so... yeah... please criticize me! I spent lots of effort on this chapter :) I would love if you guys would help me improve and such and such

-------------------------------------------------------

My sword slashed through the red skinned giant, leaving a trail of red blood and black smoke. I could sense something coming from behind, and the moment right before the silver sword touched my skin I burst into black fog reforming inside the demon's guard and slitting his throat with my dagger.

Kicking the body of the dying monster, it fell onto the others who had been taking the chance to crowd around me. In the short time it took them to reform again, I had charged up enough mana for my favorite spell- "May the Heavens Judge thy Sins! Cry, Lightning!" I said, the tip of my sword pointing to the sky, where ominous black clouds were forming, crackling with blue static. When I finished the chant, lightning fell upon the crowd of demons and screams could be heard as flesh burned. One reason why I rarely used this skill, other than the large amount of mana needed, was the fact that Black Storm was so realistic you could smell the flesh as it burned. Not fun.

By the end of that (not so) fun light show, only six or seven of the giant red-skinned demons were left. Two throwing knives ended up in the chest and eye of one of them and it fell too it's knees before crashing onto the forest floor. Lowering my center of gravity, I dashed to the closest demon, my shadowcloak fluttering behind me. I jumped to the side as a club came down, landing with a large boom where I once was. My feet met the scorched wood of the towering tree nearby and I pushed off it, using the momentum to swing my leg around and kick the demon in the head. It staggered as I dropped back down to the floor, turning into fog the moment my feet touched the ground.

Black tendrils of thick cloud expanded, until all the demons were surrounded by the gloom. Small static jumped from cloud to cloud, a foreshadowing of what I was about to do. 'From the Darkness, see the light. Unleash and burn, Electricity!' I thought, bolts of lightning frying the last few demons. Once they all fell to the ground dead, I reformed myself and brushed off any pieces of dirt on my clothes.

Surveying my work, I nodded in satisfaction before continuing on my journey. I was currently making my way to the small city of Renal up north. It was for level 60-ish players, so the mobs had posed no problems for me. Or rather, I one shot them pretty easily... It had been a lot more difficult when I first started playing but now it was too easy. I would have traveled to higher level areas and done some cool B or A rank quests, but I was dying to meet some people. Meeting people is fun after all, and I've never really been a loner type of person. Never mind, I lied. I am very much the loner type... but not on purpose! It's because I'm rich and disabled and I get wheeled around by my attendant, Inha.

Anyways, I was roughly half a days walk from the city, which lay at the base of some epic volcanoes. Most cities up north snowed, but only Renal ashed (that's not a thing but you get the idea). There was even a fun level 70 boss dragon inside the volcano with plenty of neat mechanics to keep users busy. Well, that is if they actually made it to the dragon before frying to death. I think that while playing the game I discovered many quirks similar to that which made me question how evil my father (and his employees) truly were. After all, Black Storm was as evil as it was fun.

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

The rest of my walk was pretty uneventful, nothing impressive popping up. It was probably because I had totally wiped the area's demon population earlier, I mean, I had stopped counting my kills after the went past fifty. Just kidding. I had probably only killed thirty demons max.

Reaching the town, I confirmed that Renal really did snow ashes. Or whatever you wanna call it. Anyways, ash drifted down and I made footprints in the layer of cinders beneath my feet. The sky was dark gray, black smoke coming from the tip of the three volcanoes that rose into the air beside the city. 'Well, at least it can't kill me in game...' I thought, studying the smog.

Flitting from shadow to shadow, I was headed toward the town house when I heard the clanking of metal and froze. Peeking from the edge of my vision was bright gold plated armor smeared gray from the soot. 'Eeeehhhh someone was here??' I thought, immediately disappearing into another shadow. 'Aw c'mon, I can't believe there was actually someone here...' I grumbled to myself, muttering angrily. Let me explain. In my confidence near the beginning of the beta, after mastering my abilities, I had set the system to reward anyone who saw me with a title. After all, I planned to try and go through this entire testing period without being seen. Such was the pride in my talent as a Shadow Blade. 'Well... it's not like I lost anything...' I thought, comforting myself.

Lance's POV

I was ahead of all the other testers, the only player so far to reach level 60. Stepping foot in the northern city of Renal, I frowned as ash fell from the sky and stained my golden armor. With a sigh, I decided to polish it again later. I walked towards the center of the town, checking my quest as I did so. Looking up, I saw... something dark flicker past me. It froze for a second, the dark murkiness of it's body rippling like it was made out of water. The best way to describe it... let's see... it was a shadow. Yes, that's what it was. A shadow.

*Ding!* The system sounded and my eyes widened a little as I received a message.

Congratulations! You are the first one to see the mysterious walker of shadows. As a result, you have gained the title Light in the Dark.

             Title: Light in the Dark

You are the first one to shine a light in the darkness and encounter the walker of shadows! (Name: ??? Level: ???)

Effects when equipped:

20% increase in night vision

30% chance to see through "Sneak" skill

15% increase in dark magic resistance

5% increase in light magic proficiency

My jaw dropped. 'Wha...' I thought, looking up from the system message. The shadow had already disappeared, leaving behind nothing to hint at it's existence. I looked back down at the blue window.

'Hah, I've got awesome luck, as always.' I grinned before waving away the message with my hand. 'I'll be sure to come back and look for that shadow thing after the official release...'
