Chapter 22

Chapter 22

The night was quiet once again but everyone was preparing for the hunt. "We should not harm the dragon," said Marcel. "Then how else do you suppose we take the artifact?" said Captain Nameless. "Everything is about killing is it not?" said Gus. "Oy! Spare me the lesson old man, you taught me everything I know," said Captain Nameless while tapping his sword. "If only you did not fall asleep at the important ones," mumbled Gus. "Everyone ready?" said Captain Nameless. "Aye!" every one from his crew yelled. "Oy! If you are not coming we will leave you behind," said Captain Nameless and went towards the jungle. "He does not even know where to go anyways," said Gus. "Let us prepare and head out as well, maybe we can get to the baby dragon's parents before they do," he continued. Marcel's crew followed him and Gus into the jungle. After a couple of hours of walking, they reached the spot where they saw the baby dragon. "Where to now?" asked Greg. "Here!" Gus pointed to the ground. "He left a couple of marks, we should follow them," said Gus and followed the marks. After a couple of minutes of following the marks disappeared. "I think this is where he took off," said Marcel. "Hm..." Gus scratched his head and looked around. "I can not see where he would go from here," said Gus. "Let us keep searching, it should not be far from here," said Marcel confidently. They searched but as the noon was coming the heat was making them sweat once again. "Ah... It is too hot," said Anna. "I think I will head back to camp," she continued. "I will come as well," said Bia. Rob and Tim accompanied them to the camp and the others kept searching. After a couple of hours, Marcel noticed that some trees had scratches on them. Looking closer at them he saw that those continued the path they were following. Marcel followed the markings on the trees alone and found a big tree. There was a hole big enough for him to fit through and saw that the whole tree was hollow. He climbed down the hollowed tree and got into a strange place underground with all kinds of shiny colored crystals. Marcel carefully stepped around them and managed to advance through the cave he was in. A loud roar made him tremble and lose balance. He fell down to the ground as the loud steps were getting closer. He crawled behind a crystal and waited. The steps were closer and closer, and they suddenly stopped. "What have I told you about going outside during the night?" said a voice not familiar to Marcel. "Roar... I was hungry!" said a child's voice. "Why not eat the crystals as I have told you?" said the other voice. "I do not want any more crystals!" said the child's voice. Then a sound of wings flapping went the way Marcel had come in. "Grr... He is getting on my nerves!" said the voice and went away. As the loud steps were going deeper into the cave Marcel peaked over the crystal and saw a giant purple dragon. On his tail, there were the same markings that resembled the artifacts. Marcel slowly made his way out of the cave and went to tell his crew. Gus and his crew were resting in the shadows of the trees. When they heard what Marcel had seen they were shocked. "If Nameless hears of this it will be bad," said Greg. "First we need to find the baby dragon, I heard him getting out of the cave. If they find it first who knows what the other one will do," said Marcel. "I agree," said Gus. They split up and went searching for the baby dragon. Gus and Marcel searched around the hollowed tree. "We should probably wait here," said Gus. "Why?" asked Marcel. "It is obvious that he will come back sooner or later. I do not think he will stay outside if he sees other people in the jungle," said Gus. Marcel nodded and then they hid behind some bushes. After a couple of minutes, the sound of flapping wings was getting near the hollowed tree. It was the baby dragon. "See? I told you," whispered Gus. "What now?" whispered Marcel. "We capture him," said Gus. The baby dragon landed in front of the tree. "Argh... those people will not let me eat anything, especially if they are as strong as the last ones," said the baby dragon to himself. Not long after he finished his monologue Gus jumped on him grabbing his wings and Marcel tied them together with some vines. "Roar! Let me go!" said the baby dragon. "Help! Roar!" he continued. Gus covered his mouth. "Shhh... We will not hurt you!" said Marcel. "Do you understand us?" asked Marcel. The baby dragon shook his head and Gus released his mouth. As soon as Gus took his hand from his mouth the baby dragon bit him. "Ouch... You little!" Gus raised his hand. The baby dragon closed his eyes, but before Gus released his anger Marcel stopped him. "We said we would not hurt him and I am planning to keep my promise," said Marcel while holding back Gus's giant fist.

"Now..." said Gus. "We should take him back to our camp," he continued. "That would be a bad idea," said Marcel. "Ah... right! My useless pupil might make a stew out of him when he returns," said Gus and the baby dragon's face changed colors. "We should keep him somewhere only we know. Perhaps a temporary camp," said Marcel. "Roar! My mother will get angry if I am not going back," said the baby dragon. "Then how about we make a deal? We let you go and in exchange you will talk to your mother about us. We want to explore the cave you live in if possible," said Marcel. The baby dragon looked at him and spit some fire. "Grr... Sorry about that," said the baby dragon. While Gus put out the fire the baby dragon shook his head and agreed to talk with his mother. Marcel freed his wings and he took off. "Was that a good idea?" asked Gus. "We will find out later," said Marcel. "For the time being let us get back to the camp and tell the others," he continued. They arrived at the camp and the others were waiting. Marcel began telling them what they found and then decided to spend the rest of the day at the camp. Not long after Captain Nameless also returned. "There is nothing in the jungle, only trees, and monkeys, ey," said Captain Nameless. "Oy! Are you sure that you saw a dragon? Maybe it was a weird-looking monkey," he continued and everyone started laughing. "You might be right... Maybe it was too dark outside," said Marcel while the others were still laughing. "How long will we keep searching then?" asked Captain Nameless. "One or two more days perhaps, if we do not find anything we can leave," said Marcel. Marcel and his crew knew the truth and did not say a word about it. The night fell and Anna with Captain Nameless's chef prepared the dinner. While they were enjoying the dinner noises were coming from the jungle. "Oy! Is that your flying monkey again?" said Captain Nameless while laughing. "I will go and check it out," said Marcel and grabbed his sword. When he entered the jungle he felt a warm wind at his legs. "Roar!" the baby dragon said. Marcel went towards the sound. "Try to not make too many sounds, some of the people in the camp think you do not exist," said Marcel. "Why?" asked the baby dragon. "They will hunt you and your mother if they will find out you are real," said Marcel. "Roar! Let them come!" said the baby dragon spreading his wings. "What about the thing I asked you about?" said Marcel ignoring the baby dragon attitude. "I have asked my mother and she said only one of you will be allowed in the cave," said the baby dragon. "Why?" asked Marcel. "Roar! She did not say, but be grateful that she even considered letting one of you enter," said the baby dragon. "Now I have to go back to my camp. Thank you!" said Marcel and went back to the camp. "What was it?" asked Captain Nameless. "Just a monkey," lied Marcel. "Oy! I told you!" said Captain Nameless and extended his hand towards one of his crew mates. They made a bet after Marcel left, about what made that noise. The night has passed without any other events. When morning came Marcel woke up Gus and whispered to him what truly happened last night. Gus told Marcel to go alone to the cave and that he would cover for him while he was gone. Marcel went to the hollowed tree and went down into the cave. The baby dragon was waiting at the entrance of the cave. "Roar! You came alone, yes?" asked the baby dragon. "Yes, as you told me," said Marcel. "Follow me," said the baby dragon and started flying. They walked for a couple of minutes and the more they went the lower they got. The baby dragon stopped and said, "Wait here a bit," and then continued flying down into the cave. A loud roar resounded in the cave. After the roar, a powerful gust of wind pushed Marcel and forced him to his knees. "Roar! Come!" said the baby dragon. Marcel got up and went towards his voice. The room opened up and the dragon's mother was waiting.

"Hello," said Marcel. "Hmm... So you are the human that kidnapped my child," said the dragon mother and spit out fire. "We did not mean to hurt him in any way," said Marcel and kneeled before the dragon. "He also told me that. Roar!" the dragon waved her tail. "So... What brings you here?" asked the dragon. Marcel got up and said, "We came here searching for an artifact,". "An artifact you say?" the dragon looked curious at Marcel. "What is an artifact?" asked the dragon. Marcel explained to the dragon what is an artifact and what it means for him or others searching for them. "Roar! I see!" said the dragon and flapped her wings. "Follow me!" and she took Marcel to a smaller room. "I was never able to get in there," said the dragon. "And I would not send my stupid child there," she continued. Marcel crawled into the room and from inside a cold wind blew in his face. When the room started to open up everything was covered in ice. Marcel was trembling and did not stay long in the room. When he got out the dragon was waiting. "What is it inside?" asked the dragon. "There is a room with ice and it was too cold for me to explore further," said Marcel. "Roar! Can I go with him?" asked the baby dragon. "I need to get back to the camp and change my clothes," said Marcel. "Fine! But you can only go inside the room with this human," said the dragon to her child. Marcel returned to the camp and Captain Nameless was sitting on a log. "Where have you been?" he asked Marcel. "I was exploring some leads I found yesterday," said Marcel. "And you were not going to share it with us, ey?" said Captain Nameless and got up. "And what brought you back, ey? Forgot somethin'?" Captain Nameless got close to Marcel's face. Marcel could feel his breathing. "Ehm... I came to take my jacket," said Marcel sweating. "Oy! A jacket? On this weather? You are messing with me ey?" said Captain Nameless and started laughing. He backed off and took a seat. "Suit yourself! I was just joking," said Captain Nameless and drank from the cup. Marcel calmed down and went to take his jacket. He made sure not to be followed and went back to the hollowed tree. The baby dragon was patiently waiting for him at the entrance. "Ready?" asked Marcel. "Roar! Ready!" said the baby dragon and they both crawled into the cold room. "Brrr... You did not lie about being cold here," said the baby dragon. "Why not spit some fire to melt the ice?" asked Marcel. The baby dragon spit fire and melted the ice, the water soon froze again. "It is not working," said the baby dragon. "Yes, I can see that," said Marcel. "Let us continue," and then they went deeper into the cave. The more they were walking the more cold it was. "I... I can not go anymore," said the baby dragon. Marcel took off his jacket and put it over the baby dragon. "Better?" asked Marcel while trembling from all joints. The baby dragon opened his mouth and breathed hot air warming up Marcel. "Thank you!" said Marcel. "Roar!" and continued going into the cave. Marcel saw the markings on the walls beneath the ice. "We are going in the right direction," he said to the baby dragon. "I am almost at my limit!" said the baby dragon while trying to warm Marcel up. Marcel looked at the baby dragon and saw it was exhausted. "Let us get back and let me think of another way to through here," said Marcel and grabbed the baby dragon. They got out of the cave and the dragon's mother was waiting for them. "You found anything?" she asked. "It was too cold to continue," said Marcel and laid the baby dragon on the floor. The dragon noticed that Marcel's jacket was on the baby dragon and he was exhausted. "Roar! What happened?" she asked. Marcel explained and she calmed down.

"I need to think of another way to go through this strange room," said Marcel. "I wish I could help you find this artifact," said the dragon. "Perhaps there is a way..." said Marcel and scratched his head. "Could you spit fire in the hole?" asked Marcel the dragon. "Roar! Sure, but how will this help?" said the dragon. "If there is a way to warm up the room just enough for us to go through, we might be able to find something more about this artifact," said Marcel. His words convinced the dragon and she got to work. She started spitting fire in the hole warming up the room. The ice melted so fast that the water started flooding the room they were in. After a couple of minutes, the dragon stopped and pushed the water out with her wings. Marcel was holding the baby dragon in his hands as the water drained. When the baby dragon woke up they went back in. This time the room was much warmer and there was less ice. "It worked!" yelled Marcel so that the dragon would hear him. "Roar!" the dragon said as confirmation. This time the markings on the walls were more visible. "Hmm... I wonder... Could this be some lost language?" said Marcel to himself. He did not give much thought and continued advancing through the room. They arrived at a wall that was still covered in ice. The baby dragon spit fire and melted the ice. As the ice was melting a door appeared. Marcel slowly opened the stone door and behind it was a golden horn. "Roar! Is this the artifact?" asked the baby dragon. "It must be," said Marcel and grabbed it. He blew air in it and the horn made a sound similar to the roars of the dragons. The sound reached the dragon mother's ears and she roared back. They went back and the dragon stopped Marcel. "Who made that sound earlier?" asked the dragon. "This!" Marcel showed the golden horn to the dragon. "Grr... Do it again!" said the dragon. Marcel blew once again in the golden horn and it made the same sound. "Impossible!" said the dragon and jumped. "What?" Marcel was surprised by the dragon's movement. "This sound takes me back to when I was a child. I vaguely remember a man that had it and used it to call us, the dragons," said the dragon. "I have not heard this sound in ages. Roar!" the dragon continued. "You did not know it was in there?" asked Marcel. "No... I am one of the last dragons living, and I had no idea this was inside the cave," said the dragon. "I am happy I was able to find it," said Marcel and gave it to the dragon. "Keep it!" said the dragon. "But this means a lot to you," said Marcel. "Hearing this sound is more than enough for me," said the dragon and flapped her wings. "You can return to your friends now," said the dragon. "Thank you!" said Marcel and left the cave. The baby dragon followed him up the hollowed tree. "Will you come back?" asked the baby dragon. "I do not know..." answered Marcel looking sad. "If we ever meet again, keep that horn with you," said the baby dragon and went back into the cave. Marcel returned to the camp. "Oy! Look who decided to come back!" said Captain Nameless. "Hope you found what you were looking for," he continued. Marcel looked at the sky and saw it was getting dark. "Yes!" he pulled out the golden horn. Everyone in the camp was shocked to see it. They spent the night celebrating and drinking until morning. When the sun was rising they left the island and Marcel blew in the horn one last time. Both the dragons roared back and Marcel was happy.
