Prologue

The play of children is unpredictable, imaginative, and in many ways a kind of magic that cannot be replicated. The pure chaos in their hearts and minds as they run free in backyards and playgrounds can create and destroy worlds, give rise to epic hero’s and terrible villains, all of this with no consequence or even lasting memory to prove it happened at all. On a Wednesday like any other, children’s play such as this filled a perfectly normal playground during recess. A group of young children, around five years old, were conducting a marriage ceremony inside a circle of mushrooms. The marriage ceremonies hosted by children are special, each filled with the conglomeration of the children’s misconceptions as to what happens at a wedding, and the misconceptions are as unique to each child as their own fingerprints. This particular group was following the lead of a very spunky young boy, with bright green eyes full of unbridled chaos. Under his direction, the children stole a jump rope and gathered every stone they could find, stacking them into a pillar in the center of the circle. Once the “necessary” items had been gathered, the children formed a crowd outside the circle to witness the union of the green eyed boy, and a fair haired little girl with a laugh like birdsong. Across the pillar from one another, they bound their hands together with the jump rope, and with hearts full of a child’s first love, vowed to be together forever. After the knot was tied, the other children showered them with confetti made of torn up leaves before running off to their next adventures, squeezing in as much fun as possible before the bell summoned them back inside.
