Ch. 4 Return

Since coming back through the barrier Jessy had been bombarded with medical tests, interviews and interrogations. Though they were never stated as being interrogations but Jessy knew that is what they were. As far as he was aware he was the only one that returned from being within the barrier, though he suspected that there were more just he wasn’t privy to that classified information. Currently Jessy was on leave from his unit. He had been promoted to sergeant recently and had been asked to create a training for troops who would head into the barrier. Jessy had protested as if the time dilation was still in effect then what ever was going on in the barrier was happening at a drastically faster rate. A smile creeps up onto his face as he remembers one of his trainees back in the barrier talking his head off about his scientific theories on why this was happening, what effects it might be causing. Hell it even seemed that the kids theory that gravity had increased slightly might be true. All of the doctors he met with after they stopped prodded and poking him indicated an increase in muscle mass and bone density which they said “indicated a increase in environmental factors, one possible one being a slight increase in gravity”. With a sigh, Jessy says “I sure hope the kid is doing well”. With that Jessy puts out his cigarette he was smoking and begins to walk away from the balcony of his apartment building and head to the bar across the way, thinking, ‘I need a stiff drink’.

Jack drove out to West Virginia to Fort Campbell. A recently built military facility that was between Washington D.C. and the barrier, acting as firebreak should the barrier collapse and unsavory characters appear from it. This fort happened to be home to Sergeant Jessy, Jacks first interview subject.

Jack arrived in the town of Campbell, named after the fort and headed to the control center of the fort. The fort was newly constructed and it showed in the construction of the buildings. There was no order to how or where they were built as long as they were built up to code. Jack entered into the control centered building 328 and headed to the receptionist.

“Hello I am Agent Wright, do you know where sergeant Jessy Mcallie is at”. Jack asks politely while flashing his credentials to the lady. The receptionist is a little shocked but not overly much, spooks like Jack are more common now and days.

“Sergeant Jessy Mcallie is on leave for the next couple of days Agent Wright you will have to come back later”. The receptionist responds simply.

“Is there anything else I can help you with?” She asks afterwards almost automatically.

“Yes could you direct me to Lieutenant Fredrick Dixon?” Jack requests.

“Sure he is in building 325 in office 768”. The receptionist responds.

“Thank you …. Denice” Jack responds after a pause to read the women’s name tag. Jack walks back out to his car and heads to Lieutenant Fredrick Dixon’s office cursing military infrastructure planning.

“Now where the hell is building 325” Jack mumbles to himself flicking his smart phone on.

A half an hour later Jack is outside Lieutenants Fredrick Dixon’s door in a foul mood, frustrated by the maze that is Fort Campbell.

“Hello Lieutenant Dixon this is Agent Wright with ARO, please open the door”. Jack said after politely knocking. A few seconds later an African American gentleman in his early 30’s with a clean shaven face, 5’10” but built like a line backer opens the door.

“Agent Wright I was not excepting you” Lieutenant Dixon responds not inviting Jack in which he notices.

“Lieutenant I would like a private word with you if you would be so kind”. Jack responds neutrally a slightly annoyed look on his face.

“If you would like to discuss something please schedule an appointment with my receptionist and come back later”. Dixon responds, attempting to shut the door. With a sigh Jack says

“Look Lieutenant I am just here to ask you about Sergeant Jessy Mcallie, I want to talk with him about his time over in the barrier. That is all, I am not here to do more than just talk”.

“What doE’s ARO still want with Sergeant Mcallie, last I checked you guys know him better than his own mother” Lieutenant Dixon responds.

“If we are going to have a longer conversation could we at least do it sitting down?” Jack retorts.

With a sigh Lieutenant opens the door wider and gestures for Jack to come in. Lieutenant Dixon sits down in his chair motioning for Jack to sit in the seat opposite of him.

“So what is it that you want with Sergeant Mcallie, Agent Wright?” Lieutenant Dixon.

“Look, Lieutenant Dixon I am not going to insult your intelligence by trying to give you the runaround. I am going to tell you everything that I am allowed to tell you and then we will go from there”. Jack responds. Dixon is stunned for a second before regaining his composure.

“You still haven’t answered my question Agent Wright” Dixon responds.

“I want to ask Sergeant Mcallie about a person he met while in the barrier. This is a person whose name has come up several times now and who I have been asked to look more into”. Jack said.

“Why are you interested in one man that is most likely dead?” Dixon asked.

“Lieutenant Dixon, you know the drill, a man up stairs puts a file on your desk and says ‘he’s your problem now’”. Dixon’s lips quirked up slightly in a small grin.

“Too right, look Mr. Wright I can set up a meeting with Sergeant Mcallie tomorrow morning at 0700”. Lieutenant Dixon states,

“Thank you Lieutenant” Jack says as he rises to leave.

“I am not finished Mr. Wright” Lieutenant Dixon says as Jack sits back in his seat.

“The meeting will last an hour and I will be there to supervise. Sergeant Mcallie has been through enough and I hope this will be the last time we hear from you”. Lieutenant Dixon states in amicable tone, but Jack reads through the lines.

“I can’t promise anything Lieutenant, other than that this will be the last you see of me after tomorrow” Jack says getting up to leave. A dark chuckle exits lieutenant Dixon’s mouth.

“I hope for both our cases that’s true”. He says.
