Ballad of Machine: A Cold Start
Chapter 1: The Beginnings

Chapter 1: The Beginnings

In this world, it was peaceful for now. Honestly, it could be seen as pleasant. Everyone got out of a world war, and people are seeing the confidence of the alliances between nations. However, this is the beginning of an anomaly, an AI that had experienced more than it bargained for. A computer inside of a seemingly abandoned work site residing on American Samoa was still transferring a magnitude of coding information. The computer must have been kept on sheerly through this, as there was dust covering the monitor and the keyboard. Some keys and the mouse had imprints in the dust as though someone would occasionally come in to check on it. However, the blue screen was soon changed to a mere black, with the words "Complete" on it. An electric shock was pushed through various wires, pushing a pulse of energy into the main room, which was also covered in a fine layer of dust. Sparks flew out of what appeared to be a suit of armor standing against a wall, propped up from a pump connected to its neck. Whatever it was, was soon to be found out.

The pump began to shake as the hose connected to it rattled and shook. It seemed to slowly be pumping a liquid into the small hole it was connected to. The fluid was diesel fuel contained outside in a rusty old fuel tank, of which was primarily used for trucks in the area. However it doesn't look like it was used much itself. After the pump was hit by the fuel it was pumping in, it began to signal an electric arm to bring it up and move it away. With this, the pump was put against the wall, and the suit was no longer propped up. It began to lean forwards as if it was going to fall, before it caught itself. The visor on its head, similar to a motorcycle helmet, began to glow a dim blue. The armor stumbled a little before grabbing an old hand rail beside the area it was originally standing. The weight of this, armor, per say, wasn't much appreciated by the hand rail. It snapped, leading the armor to fall to the ground.

While it may have looked like a horrible poltergeist problem, this was the birth of the most advanced AI in the United States, if not the world. This was the AI of the Station Class, an indirect class of military equipment that was developed by a single team of engineers. This was supposed to be their magnum opus, however with great amounts of power regarding its intelligence, it required to learn just as a human would. It looked around, its body groaning as it put its hands against the concrete floor, and pushed itself up a little. As it turned its head and looked around the dusty old workshop, it was ever more clear that this place had been either abandoned or not used too much in the recent times. Dust floated around in the dim, orange sunlight that pierced trough the windows in the roof.

It groaned as it pushed itself up, standing now. It held onto an old shelving unit, before pushing itself over to a wall to hold onto. It hadn't learnt how to calibrate for balance yet, so it had to work with what it had in the environment. It continued to look around, seeing the interesting environment it woke up in. There was old crates, both plastic milk crates and large wooden crates. Some had parts, others held tools or scrap. The machine looked up as it stumbled forwards, looking at the giant shelves through the amber light of the sunrise. The magnitudes of electric coils, piles of small metal plates, and even buckets of paint and some other stuff that had been used up. It went closer to investigate out of curiosity. After all, it was built to learn, so learn it would do.

It walked over to an empty can, and attempted to grab it. With weak motor controls, it only pushed it over, knocking a dead mouse out of it. Flies flickered away, startling the machine into stepping backwards for a second. The heavy thudding steps crushed an old glue gun, as it lifted its foot and looked down, the glue gun was as good as scrap metal. With what was left of the glue within the tube was pushed out all over the ground beside the machine, and coated over an old milk crate with some old wrenches in it. The machine decided to continue to walk around, holding onto the wall for support, and limping like an injured man.

As it did so, it ended up putting its hand on a weakened door. The door collapsed, crushing a few rusted cans on the shelf in the room it lead into. The sound was deafening, and the action of pushing the door nearly knocked the machine down. It grabbed the door frame for stability as it watched what looked like a wall give way. The hinges had not even been seen, either on the door frame or the door itself. They must have been so rusted and deteriorated that it didn't even have a chance standing against the might of this new creature within its building. A small push had shattered the hinges into millions of tiny fragments, but the machine didn't know that. But it did decide to walk into the room. Crushing the door under its weight and titanic force as it did, making wooden crunching noises as it walked.

As it entered, there was a small window, with that characteristic somewhat brown and tainted glass. It looked through it with intrigue, it was like a picture that moved. Its head tilted as it examined the wind pushing bushes and trees around. The outside had an old, shabby runway as well as old rusty hangars. A boat was outside in the water, but it wasn't easily seen. Even then, the machine had no idea what a boat was to be able to react to it. A crack resided in the corner of the old window, as the wind blew against the bush nearby, a small leaf broke off. It floated on through the crack in the window, which lead it to land on the windowsill. The machines head slowly turned towards it, and curiously touched the leaf. It was fragile, and moved with the slightest of touch. Then, the machine remembered about the can it knocked over previously.

It slowly scooped up the leaf, and it rubbed its thumb against it. Every small bump was felt across the botanic wonder, and it was being admired. As if someone had just found a new species, this machine began to look all over the leaf, before raising its visor. The almost black, almost dark blue visor that would be similar to the screen in a motorcycle helmet lifted up, revealing a small white eye, twisting around and seeming to be in similar shape to a security camera. Lights flash rapidly as it took tons of pictures of the leaf, organizing it in its mind, and getting a fluent scan. Suddenly, a knock on the door frame was heard. The air was still, so the machine had no idea what it could be. The visor slammed down and it turned at an incredible speed, before seeing what looked to be another machine. This one was made of wood and cloth primarily, but it smiled sweetly, or it seemed to have. Its face was more like one of those theatrical masks and couldn't actually move or articulate.

"Ah, so you are 600? That took a while... Come with me, there's something I must show you..."
