Chapter 5: Pokessence

Chapter 5: Pokessence

The waves crashed against the body of the blue-skinned Lapras as the winds howled furiously while Archer held onto one of the appendages of its saddle-like back. He squinted, and the wind kept hitting his face harshly. "How can you be alright with all these sufferings, Shane?! Do these things not bother you at all?"

Shane laughed heartily as he looked on his back. "But, of course I'd be fine. I've been riding her on the sea ever since I caught her back when I was 20. Don't worry, you will get used to it, well, probably."

"Can you just tell Jane to slow down a bit? I feel like I am inside a Magnetic Bullet Ride!"

"Sure," Shane agreed as he whispered something on Jane's twirling ears. "I can afford to be a bit late, considering this is your first time on Surf."

"Thanks, I appreciate it." Archer felt that their pace slowed down, and soon, he could now bear the beatings of the harsh winds against his frail body. He massaged his head because he was feeling dizzy, his stomach was gurgling and he tasted something acidic that was about to reach his troat.

"Bleeeergh!"

"Bwahahaha." Shane guffawed for a long time as Archer kept emptying his stomach, vomiting all the way until he felt all the food he had eaten earlier were spewed out.

Still chuckling, Shane looked back at Archer. "Are you alright now? Still feeling dizzy?" he said with a hint of concern in his voice. "I have some pills to help you feel okay."

"I need all the help I can get, so thank you Shane," Archer answered as he took the pill from Shane. "Do you have any water with you?"

"No need. Just chew it, it tastes like fruit, anyway."

"Alright." Archer popped the pill inside his mouth, munching as he tasted the citrusy flavor, and he felt instantly refreshed. "Wow, this is really effective. You should have given me some before we started the journey."

"I just want you to experience the organic feeling of what surfing is all about." Shane sneered, pulling out a vial, and offered it to Archer. "This is an antidote. Just take a hold of it."

"Why?"

"Better safe than sorry. We'll never know if we'll meet some poisonous critters along the way."

"At the sea? Well, maybe some poisonous sea Pokemon." Archer scrutinized the vial that he was holding, and observed that the fluid inside was purple and viscous. "Do you just have to drink this directly?"

"Yup. A vial is good enough to take care of many types of poison."

"Many? Not all poison?"

"Yep," Shane affrmed. "But thanks to the scientists who continuously improve our medicines, soon enough, every poison from all Pokemon will be treatable."

Archer gazed at the blue sea and the silhouette of the distant islands, and enjoyed the beauty of nature for the first time here in the Pokemon World.

The messenger was right. I should live and enjoy. There's a lot of things to do and explore. And -

Archer's rumination was cut off suddenly by Shane's voice, his brows in a furrow, staring at the direction as to where Shane was looking. The seawater infront of them were full of huge bubbles, as if boiling. A few minutes later, about eight blue creatures popped out, its eyes staring at them as the three red, circular thing shined on its head. Archer took out his book, which automatically opened and showed the correct data:

Fuck the guardians! What 'nothing to control'. Such assholes.

Archer gripped the vial firmly as the book disappeared. He kept his guard on as he saw their tentacles swaying, as if waving their goodbyes. "Are their poisons treatable?" he whispered.

"Yep. They're one of the common ones so its natural for us to have an antidote against their poison." Shane took two Pokeballs at his belt and raised them up. "Don't be afraid, Archer, my two friends are enough to kick their asses. Just sit down, relax, and enjoy the beauty and power of my Pokemon."

"That's reassuring."

Shane chuckled. "Everyone, come out. It's time to do some demolition job."

Now this is getting ridiculous. Now I need my own Pokedex, ASAP.

"Pidgeotto!" The Bird Pokemon flapped its wings as it stayed on its place while the Magnet one floated just above us, creating a 'Bzzzzzzt' sound.

Archer noticed that Shane was just sitting, as if watching a television, not commanding his Pokemon to attack. Curious, Archer poked his back and asked, "Why are you not attacking them? They looked scary as fuck, they might hurt us."

Shane smiled. "Just wait. I'll explain everything to you later."

The scenario was just the same for about five minutes, everyone just remained on their places until one of the Tentacools lifted its tentacles and its two circular alien-like bulge flashed on its head. Together, they shoot bubbles toward the flying Pidgeotto when all of a sudden, Shane instructed, "Pudgee, use Whirlwind attack!"

"Pidgeotto!" Pudgee screeched as it flapped its wings as fast as it could, producing a big hurricane that moved toward the Tentacools, blasting away the bubbles that they shot earlier. It kept on attacking as it hovered in the air, the hurricane now pulling the eight Tentacools up from the sea. Soon enough, they were swiveling as the wind carried them. The tentacools were quivering, as they shot smogs and bubbles, but to no effect.

Shane stood up and commanded, "Magna, now its time. Zapped them with Thunderbolt."

"Bzzzzzzt!" Magna glided in the air, facing the swirling Tentacools. Flashes of light became visible, then came a big bolt of thunder coming from its body, hurling it towards the poor enemies. It lasted for about half a minute until the hurricane and the thunderbolt disappeared. Splashing sounds could be heard as the Tentacools fell into the sea, swallowing them until their bodies could not be seen. Once again, the sea was calm, betraying the earlier fight as if it did not happen in the first place.

Archer was still excited from the previous fight,  and for the first time, he witnessed how a true Pokemon Trainer battled. He couldn't help but admire this brawny Trainer, and with an expectant look, asked him, "Now can you tell me the details? All of it, please?"

"Sure. But let me recall my Pokemon first." Pointing his pokeballs, he called his friends. "Magna, Pudgee. Good Job. Now, return." The Pokemon vanished and the only Pokemon left was Jane, which was just swimming without a care in the world.

"Come on, man. Tell me why you've waited."

Shane smirked. "Well, do you know that each Pokemon Trainers mostly carry six at a time?"

"Yes. But I'm wondering why?"

"Because of the energy we call Pokessence that is present inside our body. It is this essence that helps us keep the Pokemon healthy inside the Pokeballs while we carry them with us. Pokessence is also used by trainers to make Pokemon out of the Pokeballs and command them in battles. Have you understood?"

Archer held its chin. "Yes, I do. But can you tell me what is Pokessence."

"Okay, let's go to Pokessence 101. As a general rule, Trainers have positive Pokessence and Pokemons have negative Pokessence. DIfferent trainers and Pokemon have different Pokessence capacity allowed on their bodies, which is called Pokessence Limit, measured in Ess. Pokessence Limit determines how many pokemon you can carry at a time, and most adults have Pokessence limit equivalent to six Max Evolved Pokemon. Pokessence Limit could only be increased via physical, mental, spiritual or other 'induced' trainings. It is theoretically possible to carry as many as you'd like, as long as the total Negative Pokessence of the Pokemon you're carrying is equal or less than that of your Pokessence Limit.

In short, a trainer with 1000 Ess capacity can have with him two Pokemon possessing 500 Negative Ess each, but any Pokemon he catches will be transported to the Poke Lab. Same with a trainer with 500 Positive Ess capacity could carry five 100-Ess Pokemon, and any Pokemon he catches will be transported to the lab as well. Similarly, a Trainer with 1000 Ess capacity can carry ten 100-Ess Pokemon, and anything he catches in excess will be transported. Is it clear?"

"Yes, very clear." Archer was amused at the new learnings he had heard, very different from the games and anime. "But why does Pokemon have different types?"

"Good question, and that will lead us to Pokessence 102. Pokessence have different natures, which gives the Pokemon their basic types. Currently, scientists have discovered about 18 Pokessence natures, but they believe that there are still undiscovered ones, and usually, a Pokemon have several types inside its body. Pokessence not only determines it basic typing, but it also determine what skill types it can be strong with. As a general rule, if a particular pokessence comprises 25% or more of its Pokessence Limit, then that is the type of the Pokemon. If a Pokemon has a Pokessence type totalling 15% or more compared to its Pokessence Limit , then it can have an oomph using that skill type, the higher the percentage, the stronger they will be.

Let us use my Magnemite as an example. Magna has 200 Pokessence, of which 100 Ess is Electric, 50 Ess is steel, 40 Ess is Normal, and 10 Ess Flying. Since it contained 50% Electric and 25% Steel, then it means Magnemite's first type is Electric, then its second type is Steel, making it dual-nature. It can also dish powerful skill using the same type. But since its Normal Pokessence is only 20%, it is not enough to affect the nature of Magnemite's body, but it is greater than 15%, so it can have stronger Normal attacks as well. Flying Pokessence is negligible. So we can conclude that Magnemite is Electric-Steel type, and its skills are Electric, Steel and Normal in decreasing power. Understood?"

"Uh...huh. But what about Pokemon having no particular Pokessence type, can it still learn the skill?"

"That's hard to say. Sometimes it can. But it is very underwhelming when it comes to its power."

"What about Pokemon trainers, do they have typing as well?" Archer inquired.

"Yep. Just like Pokemon, us Trainers have different types. It determines the capability of the trainers in utilizing the full potential of a certain Pokemon, especially when using Z-Power or X-Power. Don't you know that we can also learn techniques just like Pokemon? The best example is Sabrina, a Psychic Type Trainer having Psychic Pokemon. She has a staggering 85% Psychic Ess and 15% Normal Ess, that is why her Pokemon are all Psychic types, and are very strong because she can utilize them to its full potential. A plus point for her since she can also cast Psychic on you. Double jeopardy, both from her attacks and her Pokemon. See?"

Archer realized that many possibilities opened up for him.

So it all matters to one question: what is my Pokessence Type?
