I had already forgotten how long I'd been running through the streets. Every corner I turned, they were always there.
The nervousness added more fatigue to my body than running. I needed to call my mom, but what if they were still there? What about the police? I needed to stop to call them, or maybe should I just go to a precinct and report them? But where? I'd been running for the past few minutes, maybe hours, and I didn't recall any of this place at all.
While lost in thoughts, two black cars appeared in front of me. "How come they were in front of me when just moments ago they were behind me?" I looked back to check the cars behind me and saw that the other cars are still following me. I stopped running and just accepted my defeat and sat down on the pavement.
The cars quickly surrounded me. Men in black suits got out of the cars, some handled the traffic, and some surrounded me. A girl then got out, too, moments after.
The girl had long black hair and pale skin. She looked like a model from this famous magazine that every woman reads. She looked so pissed too, but why? She walked up to me like a boss. The way she walked asserted dominance with her peers.
"Why stop? If you already wasted everyone's goddamn time, then why stop at all?" she shouted. "Take him!."
Take me where? The thoughts of being killed and tortured suddenly ran through my head. I was then escorted by her men to the car where the lady got off. I wanted to resist, I wanted to escape and run again, but I couldn't. They didn't even take me with force, I just went with them nicely, and yet I couldn't summon any strength to run away.
The lady then sat next to me. The long awkward silence was broken when she introduced herself.
"I'm Agent Ashley Farnsworth. I'm from the Bureau of Defence. I was tasked to recruit mimics. Mason Field, I'm here to recruit you to be one of the heroes who would protect us from the devastation those demonic invaders would cause."
"What... me?"
"We'd been eyeing you for a few weeks now, and we're sure that you were truly a mimic," she said.

I was dumbfounded at the moment. How could I be a Mimic? I'd never wanted to be one, so why me?
Agent Ashley looked at me. "I guess you're not convinced? Well then, tell me how can a normal human being run from a car, which is obviously faster than the fastest man ever, for hours, without showing any signs of fatigue or recovering fast?"
I was then shocked when she told me that and noticed that the fatigue I felt earlier suddenly disappeared. I still wanted to ask them questions about me, but my parents' image crossed my mind. "What happened to my parents?"
"Don't worry, they were completely safe. We didn't do anything to them. They also knew what you just learned just now. We came to your house to pick you up, but you suddenly ran like a fugitive would do if they saw us. Considering your personality, you were not the type to do bad things, but even so, if you had done anything in the past that we didn't know, it would be instantly forgotten if you fought for us."
I still wanted to ask a lot of questions, but the car suddenly stopped in front of this massive building. When I got off, I never realized that the cars before were already gone, and only the car we rode in was here.
I then followed Agent Ashley calmly like a puppy. The inside of the building looked so eerie and gloomy. Was it a building for a funeral or something?
The people there all avoided making eye contact with Ashley; it only proved the superiority she had over these people.
"We'd been expecting you, Agent Farnsworth. He was currently in the main room," said the lady at the reception.
We then headed to the elevator and proceeded to the 38th floor, the second-highest floor of the building. Two heavily armed men were guarding the door of the only room on the floor.
When we entered the room, I never expected it to be this big. It was even bigger than our own house. The room was quite dark, with little dimmed lights on the ceiling. In the middle of the room was a massive table with at least 12 to 15 chairs on it. In the farthest part of the room was this man sitting on a table behind a desk and 5 screens of a computer. The desk was not alone. Many desks were on top of each other like a pyramid. And the highest desk was where the man sat.
"Another one, huh?" he said. "So why visit me? What did you need me for?"
The man was far from us; I couldn't see how he looked.
"I just wanted to confirm something," Ashley said.
"I see, then give me a second."
Suddenly, this large projection appeared in front of us. Pictures of me and so much information about me were in there. How long had they been spying on me? How well did they know me? A sudden feeling of nervousness that already quieted from me came back.
"Anything else?" Ashley asked.
"Everything you see is the only thing I know." He replied.
Ashley then smirked as if she were expecting something. She looked confused for a moment. She then looked at me, signalling that I should follow her, we then left the building.
While riding in the car, she then took out a folder from the compartment under the seats. I guessed those were my documents, but I didn't ask what was in it, though.
"As you know, each mimic has their own set of unique powers they possess. There are three categories for mimics: sensory type, body modification type, and energizer type. We were headed to one of the test facilities to determine what kind of mimic you were, so if I were you, I would use that chance to rest, as later on, your perseverance would be questioned," Ashley said.
I didn't have high expectations for myself. I had never once aced a test in my life, and I had heard that the tests for mimics were quite hard. Only 2 out of 10,000 who took the exam passed. That was too low; my chance to pass that test was just as slim.
