“I can’t believe I have to stay in a special case dorm,” Zeph growled walking up the school stairs, “I think this is the way…”
“Hey, kid,” A voice said firmly, “That way is restricted.”
A girl crossed her arms and stood just at the base of the stairs. She wore a white shirt with a tie. She paired the basic school uniform with a red skirt and some white stockings. Her brown hair was cut short; up to her neck. A black bow sat on her head giving her a childish but strict vibe.
“Uh… sorry,” Zeph said nervously, “I’m lost…”
“Oh, do you happen to be a new student?” The girl said suspiciously, “Usually they don’t arrive so early. Maybe one or two days after the ceremony”
“I think… I was sent to a special case dorm?” Zeph stammers walking down the stairs, “I never got a to-”
“A special case? Wait I think Mira was supposed to tour you?” The girl interrupted looking closer at Zeph’s face, “I don’t have my glasses right now…”
I’ll bring you back to the older kids' dorms because the special case dorms are closed.”
“Why?” Zeph blurts out, “oops… I mean do you happen to know why-”
Stupid Zeph! Zeph thought You can’t get on the bad side of the seniors! The girl stared at Zeph for a while before bursting into laughter. What happened? Zeph panicked Did I do something stupid?? The girl wiped her tears.
“You’re like a statue!” The girl giggled, “I’m Amelia and treat me like your older sister not some sort of scary creature.”
“I didn’t think you were a scary creature, Zeph said as his face turned red from embarrassment, “I just don’t talk to new people a lot…”
“Some kid the same grade as me decided to host a party,” Amelia explained, “Most special case kids are troublemakers. So like usual, they broke a couple of things.”
“I’m assuming you aren’t?’ Amelia said, “Oh well because you probably just got here today. The teachers wouldn’t have a way to see if you were a troublemaker or not.”
“Ya,” Zeph said warming up a little, “fainted after getting a gem…”
“Fainting?” Amelia asked shockingly, “Shouldn’t you be resting then??”
“I saw a bunch of kids enter the infirmary,” Zeph said, “So I just left because there weren’t enough beds.”
“That’s nice of you but you should be resting. Gem summoning takes up a lot of energy,” Amelia said grabbing Zeph’s arm, “Come on we have an empty bunk in our room. Tomorrow dorm management is going to be sorted.”
“Am I allowed to?” Zeph asked nervously, “I mean because I’m new and all?”
“Amelia Makka of the 2nd year student council has allowed Zeph.. uh,” Amelia announced.
“Violette… Zeph Violette,” Zeph said.
“Zeph Violette to stay one night in the 2nd year’s dorm room,” Amelia continued, “Under one condition! DON’T SNORE!!”
“I promise I won’t snore,” Zeph laughed, “Lead the way!”
BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRING!
Zeph wakes up startled. He barely
slept all night. The room was fine of course and Amelia’s roommates were very welcoming but he couldn’t stop thinking about the strange dream-like vision he had the day of the gem ceremony. Such as a warm but cold feeling… he tried to shake it off but just couldn’t.
Amelia and her 2 roommates, Miko and Lori, were quite welcoming of Zeph but today was his big day. The 3 girls looked like opposites. Miko had long blueish-black hair almost hiding her face while Lori had short hair that barely reached her neck. Their looks weren’t the only thing. Miko seemed shyer, Amelia too cheerful and Lori acted like a delinquent.

“Zeph breakfast gates are closed for 1st years,” Lori said putting on her piercings, “The cafeteria is always packed so first years aren’t allowed to attend.”
“So where do I get breakfast?” Zeph asked.
“I’m afraid you have to buy it outside of the school,” Amelia said, “But you’re in the special case kid.”
“And?” Zeph asked, kinda offended, “What about it?”
“Special cases aren’t allowed… outside the gates,” Miko whispered as she exited the washroom, “Amelia will buy you some… breakfast.”
“Ya Amelia gets breakfast for us then at 9 all first years will be in front of the school gate,” Lori said, “But we need to sneak you there because you aren’t allowed in the school yet.”
“What would you like for breakfast?” Amelia asked, “The cafeteria has everything. Toast, egg, bacon, pancakes, sandwiches, rice, noodles-.”
“Pancakes…” Zeph replied, “With strawberries.”
“What would you 2 like?” Amelia asked.
“Egg tomato rice!” Lori smiled, packing her things in her bag.
“Again?” Amelia sighed, “The staff are going to force you to eat something else very soon.”
“Can’t wait,” Lori laughed, “Let’s see if they can change my diet.”
“With that stubborn personality they aren’t going to,” Amelia said, “What would you like Miko?”
“I want to try something new…” Miko said, “But I’m not sure what…”
“Can’t you order something like uhh chicken nuggets and ice cream?” Zeph said, “Something new?”
“No there is a food restriction…” Miko sighed, “They have everything but don’t serve everything…”
“Have you tried Banitsa?” Zeph suggested.
“What now?” Lori scoffed, “It sounds weird.”
“No, it isn’t!!” Zeph snapped, “We found it in an old recipe book when only humans existed..”
“It’s kind of like egg, yogurt, cheese smacked into a bread-like thingy!” Zeph said,” I don’t know much about it but human culture isn’t the same anymore.
“Sounds good,” Miko smiled, “I want to try Banitsa!”
“I thought human culture disappeared?” Lori said, “You know all the gems and stuff?”
“Humans still exist tho!” Amelia replied,” So that means tradition and culture will still lurk around. Not the same as before though…”
“So pancakes for Zeph, Banista for Miko and more egg tomato rice for Lori!” Amelia said.
The three nodded. Amelia quickly ran out of the dorm after Miko whispered something in her ear. Lori let out a relieved sigh before digging through the closet.
“What are you looking for?” Miko asked approaching her.
“Disguises!” Lori said whipping out a black cloth from the closet,” So we can hide in the crowd!!”
“We won’t be needing those,” Miko said.
Zeph never got to see the school well during the gem ceremony cause of all the people. He didn’t expect the school to be THAT big and colourful. It looked like a castle with all those different towers and windows scattered around. Miko was right too no one turned an eye to them not even the professors.
“People usually bring younger students to look around the building,” Miko said,” My younger brother didn’t make it in because he lacked enough crystal blood.”
“But disguises look cooler!!” Lori complained.
“They will make us stand out more,” Miko firmly said, “and we can’t get kicked out of the school yet-”
“What was it about disguises?” A blond-haired lady approached them, “and about being kicked out of the school?”
“M-miss Merica!” Miko stammered, “We were just joking around…”
“I was just trying to scare the kid,” Lori lied ruffling Zeph’s hair,” You know big day and all?”
“Isn’t he the missing special case?” Miss Merica asked.
“What? Hahahaha… I have no idea what you mean,” Lori awkwardly laughed, “Anyways we should get going now, NICE TALK MISS,”
“Now hold on Ms. Aziz,” Miss Merica said grabbing Lori’s hand, “Come with me-”
Lori reaches into her purse and tossed something at the professor. The object smashes and green dust appears. Lori (Zeph assumed) covered his eyes quickly. He heard a loud yowl which seem to be from the professor. Suddenly Zeph’s head felt spinny and nauseous. Lori removed her hand from Zeph’s face and Zeph noticed he was back in their dorm.
“How did we get here?” Zeph asked looking around still sick, “I think I’m going to throw up…”
“It’s my ability-” Lori started.
“Don’t vomit on the floor,” Miko interrupted, “Vomit in the toilet.”
“No, I think I’m fine now,” Zeph said firmly, “Yep all good.”
“Anyways as I was saying,” Lori repeated, “It’s my ability, teleportation.”
“Woah,” Zeph said amazed. He had never seen an ability up close other than telekinesis, “Are there any side effects?”
“Nope,” Lori smudgily said, “No side effect-”
“She gets nauseous if she does it too much,” Miko interrupted again, “Everyone's ability has side effects.”
“What’s your ability?” Zeph curiously asked.
“I can make drawings come to life,” Miko responded, “also you probably haven’t learned that asking for people's abilities can come off rude?”
“Oh… no?” Zeph said, “How so?”
“What if you had a weak ability or one you didn’t like,” Lori continued for Miko, “Those people didn’t need to be reminded of their ability but it’s fine here in the school.”
“Oh sorry then,” Zeph apologized, “I’ll remember that.”
Amelia walks through the door with multiple boxes in her hands. Her expression looks displeased and she glares at Lori. Just as she steps into the dorm, Zeph notices the very same professor Lori attacked following behind her.
“Well well well,” The professor said, “Hurry up and follow me you four”
