Chapter 38: The Dinner

Battle really was the place where he truly felt at home.

With a few quick steps he jumped through Undead ranks, swinging his blade left and right.

287 Damage dealt!

167 Damage dealt!

It was quite ridiculous how big of a counter Undead creatures were to his class.

Not only were status effects like 'Bleed' or 'Fear' completely ineffective on them, the actual damage a blade did was also reduced.

He would have to focus on slowing them down or disabling them while Sanja would be their Main Damage dealer this fight.

Spinning on his heels he accelerated his own momentum and lashed out with his sword, effectively putting even more power behind the strike.

Following a disgusting wet snap, a system message appeared before him.

301 Damage dealt!

You have put a status effect on your opponent!

Cripple: -20% movement and attack speed until the battle is over.

"Blinding Light!"

Sanja screamed behind him and seemingly out of nowhere 3 Undead Soldiers were bathed in a white light.

All 3 of them had their health reduced by nearly 80%, that was how much damage healing magic did to undead, it was stupidly good.

Arrow after arrow left Saracesse's bow, whistling through the air and embedding themselves into skulls and bodies.

Just like with a blade weapon, arrows also were a lot less effective and even with her level advantage her attacks did a lot less damage than Sanja's.

"Flame Barrage!"

Following a sharp hiss, a visible snake made of pure fire erupted from Lilliana's wand, roasting a couple of Undead Soldiers.

They made sure to take care of as many small fries as they could before aggroing the Elite Undead.

No one in the party had any desire to fight with a strong enemy while being attacked by over fifty other creatures.

Cracking spines, knees, hips and heads, Makoto was a whirlwind of hurt, going through countless ranks of Undead without ever even being touched.

At the same time Lilliana was either roasting them alive or putting Ice spears into them, Sanja just straight up smited them like a God and Saracesse could fire up to 50 arrows in one minute, it was pure chaos but they got the job done.

"Only the big boy left."

Sanja commented, wiping a bit of sweat from her forehead.

"Everyone get ready, we have no idea how strong an Elite Undead inside the Labyrinth is, be careful."

Nodding to his words, all of them got into position and after one more look Makoto stepped forward.

Increasing his tempo with every step, he soon enough ran towards the giant that seemed to be made entirely out of grey and decaying flesh, the smell alone was enough to upset his stomach but he kept running forward.

Interestingly enough the Elite Undead had been standing in a daze while his fellow brethren were slaughtered but after Makoto got close enough its head whipped around with a disgusting crack and dead eyes stared into a crimson pair.

Letting out a deafening roar the Undead General jumped forward with surprising Agility.

Unable to avoid collision at this point, all he could do was have his sword pointed forward while a gigantic grey hand swatted him to the side, like he was an especially disgusting fly.

You have received 671 Damage!

Makoto's entire ribcage felt as if it was crooked and a mouthful of blood flew with him through the air.

Immediately a blazing fire snake surrounded the Elite monster to keep it from pursuing after him.

Sanja, well aware of his incredible regen focused on dealing damage and used 'Blinding Light' together with 'Healing Hand' every few seconds to drastically damage the creature.

Saracesse showed the Skill 'Scatter Shot' for the first time and a rain of arrows descended on the stunned giant, practically pinning him to the floor while another deafening roar filled the room.

With 'Blood Rejuvenation' Makoto was back on his feet in seconds and his health was full soon after.

Shouting his anger and frustration to the disgusting Undead he ran towards it in a zigzag pattern and with a quick spin and jump sunk his blade into pulsating flesh.

Black blood exploded forth, drenching his left side and with a howl of pain he jumped back and tried to wipe the vile liquid away from him, it felt like acid that burned through his skin when he was sprayed with it.

Otherwise occupied, Makoto's concentration was not on the fight for a few seconds but that was enough to receive a kick into his gut that nearly made him puke out his intestines.

You have received 751 Damage!

It was insane how much power was behind every motion of this Elite, closer to a Boss than anything else really.

Wiping another trickle of blood away from the corner of his mouth, Makoto stood up again, an unwavering fire burning in his eyes while the 3 girls bombarded the creature with everything they had, decreasing its health at a rather rapid rate.

This fight showed that his Class could really be called the perfect meat shield, his incredible endurance in a prolonged battle was enough for any long ranged damage dealer to have an easy time.

Still wanting a bit of action except only receiving attacks, he jumped back into the fray again and exchanged blows with the giant, spitting out one mouthful of blood after the other.

"Light of Heaven!"

With a massive roar and engulfed into white flames the Undead Elite received divine punishment by Sanja and the last few percent of its health disappeared into nothingness.

It was not the longest or hardest fight he ever had but Makoto was again made aware of the fact how incredibly difficult even a simple elite could be in the later levels.

It was a clear indicator from the game telling him to only engage them in a party from now on, which made sense to begin with.

The actual loot turned out be simple junk or low level equipment while the Undead General had dropped a black pointed hat for the Mage Class.

Seeing the small Lilliana with this pretty big and pointed black Hat on her head was enough to crack Makoto up and she looked at him with a mix of embarrassment and hatred in her eyes.

"You really look like a true witch now."

He said and with an annoyed expression on her face she stomped on his foot and ran off ahead.

Saracesse made a strange face and then looked between him and Lilliana a few times before also storming off without saying a word.

"What did I do wrong?"

Was all he could say as he looked after both girls, turning towards Sanja who was still next to him.

He threw a questioning look her way and she only let out a long sigh before also going on ahead, ignoring him

"Come on guys, wait up!"

…..

They all hunted for a good while longer and Makoto was very close to leveling up when both Sanja and Lilliana called it a day.

"We have to go now, got a 12 hour shift tomorrow and so does Lilly, we will see you guys on the weekend again alright?"

Both Makoto and Saracesse nodded with a smile and waved them goodbye.

A short moment later, only 2 figures remained under the setting sun.

"Shall we go too?"

She asked and he nodded.

They were on their way back to the Inn and Makoto was dragged into a few shops before convincing her that he just didn't have the money for any of the items.

Thankfully buying his lie, he was able to shield his savings from certain doom and they walked back on the busy street while holding hands.

Pressing his hand, Saracesse tried to get his attention and when he looked into her eyes he could see incredible lust running wild inside of them.

"Talk about impossible to satisfy, just how much do you want to do it every day?"

He jokingly said and she only showed a crooked smile, not breaking eye contact.

"Well then you just have to try even harder and longer."

Laughing at her response they reached the Inn, only to suddenly stop.

An entire squad of Soldiers was waiting for them outside the building.

A man in heavy and expensive looking armor was currently talking with the Innkeeper until the man frantically pointed at Makoto and Saracesse after seeing them appear out of the masses.

Turning around and showing him a threatening expression, the man approached and stopped a few feet away from them both, one hand pressed against his chest.

"Council Member Forrowfell is inviting you to Dinner. He has told me to tell you that it is about a certain favor."

Surprised about this early summoning, Makoto turned to his left but the Soldier interrupted him.

"He said to come alone."

A bit disappointed, he nodded and turned to his lover.

"Sorry Saracesse, I have to go but I promise I will be back as soon as possible ok?"

With a worried expression visible on her face and eyeing the squad of soldiers a few times she nodded and kissed him farewell.

"I will wait for you my love."

It hurt leaving her behind alone time after time but there just was no helping it so with a bit of guilt in his stomach he followed the man in heavy armor while the rest of the Soldiers escorted him.

They ascended many layers and went north, back towards the Labyrinth.

Soon enough the surrounding buildings were clearly all of noble origin, showing incredible size and luxury.

Stopping shortly before a mansion, painted in the colors red and black, he was guided to the front door.

This was clearly one of the more expensive buildings in the Noble district that he had ever seen.

After only a short knock, a Butler with grey hair and a serious expression on his face, opened the door.

"I deliver the foreigner Makoto on Council Member Forrowfell's orders."

The man reported and the Butler gave him a short nod only to then wave him away.

"This way, Sir."

The Butler said and somewhat unsure, Makoto followed him inside.

The entire mansion was decorated with pictures, statues, vases and all kinds of artifacts.

A treasure trove of riches so to speak of.

After going through many rooms that all showed incredibly expensive objects, he finally met Narkas Forrowfell again, sitting at a large table and currently cutting apart a steak.

"I hope you don't mind me having started already but I haven't eaten all day and sent for you hours ago so please excuse my rude behavior."

"No it's alright, really."

Showing him a big smile, Narkas continued to devour his steak and a Maid, a beautiful woman wearing an actual maid outfit, served Makoto his own steak together with a few baked potatoes and a green salad to go with it.

It tasted absolutely gorgeous, he normally wasn’t a meat lover but this was probably the best thing he ever tasted in his entire life.

Was this how the high class in society always ate?

That just seemed so unfair.

After finishing the incredible meal with a somewhat disappointment and greed for more, Narkas began speaking.

"I would like to have some privacy with my guest please."

Immediately all the surrounding Maids and Servants showed a deep bow and excused themselves.

Looking deep into his eyes, Narkas began talking again.

"Now then, where to start.

Maybe I should tell you a bit about myself.

Yeah, that might be a good idea.

You have to understand, I was not born into a nice situation like this, no, quite the opposite actually.

I was born in Khalief, the land of the Mithril dragons, a kingdom far to the east of here.

To be more precise I was born in the slums of the capital, Ferasil, the Eternal city.

Born with nothing but a shabby roof over my head and two parents that both struggled to even find proper work, life was not easy.

It is really incredible on how little food a human being can exist, hunger was the only thing eternal for me in that city, just like with many others.

One fateful day someone had the brilliant idea to rob our hut, already possessing next to nothing my parents begged the guy to leave them a few coppers so they could at least feed me.

That was the last thing they ever said.

He stabbed them both in the throat and disappeared into the night."

Makoto had to swallow hard after seeing the incredibly dark emotions in the others eyes but continued to attentively listen to his story.

"Having nothing and no one left to hold me back or take care of me, I started begging my way to the docks and was able to board a ship heading west.

I worked day and night on that boat, getting nothing else except a roof over my head and one meal a day but that was more than enough for me.

Arriving in Talis after many weeks on sea I started to work in the docks and saved up enough money to travel to the Capital, to come here.

After walking through that gigantic gate for the first time I decided that this would be the turning point and changed my name to Narkas Forrowfell.

I was a no name inside an incredibly big city, for the first few years or so I worked odd jobs until I was accepted as a Servant to one of the richer houses in the City.

After years and years of loyalty and servitude, all I got was a smile as they fired me.

Again on the streets and without a home I decided to use the rest of my savings to buy myself a new set of clothes, this time noble ones, and applied for an assistant position at the Council, luckily enough I was able to get the job.

First it was hard for me as a foreigner, there was a lot that I didn't know but I learned quickly.

I met many people, exchanged favors for others and increased my influence over others after years of playing a dangerous game.

It was important to know which people I could step on the toes and which ones I should definitely leave alone.

Formerly of low birth I was able to elevate my position by black mailing, forging and breaking nearly every law in the country to get where I am right now.

After the king declared me a noble I started to tidy up behind me and befriended enemies, paid back debts and corrected mistakes, it might not have been pretty but I tried my best to calm the storm I had created on my way to power, well aware that if I didn't do that, the next thing I would wake up to would be a dagger in my heart.

All of this happened 10 years ago, since then not much has changed but I noticed one thing, no matter how hard I tried to get a wife from noble birth to start my own house, all houses inside and outside the kingdom refused me, some kindly and others in quite the rude way.

Even after all of these years of trying to better this country and help its people I was still not seen as one of them, I would always stay the same foreigner that stole his way to nobility in their eyes.

A lowborn scum born in the slums of Ferasil.

I am already past my prime now, youth has started to leave me and I can feel the years catch up to me, still with no wife or child to call my own and only having a limited amount of influence.

To put it blunt, I do not have many people that I can trust."

Stunned about this incredibly lengthy and detailed explanation, he needed a moment to digest it all.

"So why exactly are you telling me all of this?"

Makoto finally asked, unsure what the point of telling him his life story was.

"The reason is simple really, I heard word about you from the Tournament after asking around a bit.

Seems you made quite a name for yourself as the mad beast with crimson eyes and cloak that fought both graceful and wild.

I have discovered some information.

The Head of the Magic Institute was never directly involved with the Blood Moon Cult, but there was someone inside the Capital that had enough influence and power to help fund the entire thing, I was able to dig up a name Makoto.

House Stimridge, a wealthy noble family that has deep ties with the Royal Families.

This might explain why there was never any drastic actions against the Cult, neither from the Council nor the king, it could also be that both had been kept completely in the dark but I know for sure that house Stimridge was deeply involved.

I want you to help me uncover this possible conspiracy as there is no one in this city that I trust enough and you are still owing me a favor so that is two birds with one stone."

Quite interested by this request and always willing to find out what really happened behind the scenes, Makoto didn't hesitate at all.

"What do you want me to do?"

"I want you to pose as a new Servant for house Stimridge as the previous one has suddenly gotten terribly sick."

Narkas showed a mischievous smile on his face and continued.

"Getting a house far to the north of here together with a sack of gold coins really is one of the most terrible illnesses."

Right away a new system window appeared before him.

The Ones in the Dark: (Quest)Infiltrate house Stimridge under the guise of a Servant and find out who else is behind this conspiracy and how the powerful and prestigious house Stimridge was involved with the Blood Moon Cult to begin with.Rewards:UnknownPenalty:If refused, Narkas Forrowfell will see you as someone who breaks his word, making it impossible to ever get on friendly terms with any of the nobles in Asuria.Requirements:Incredibly high Intimacy with one of the Council Members (or owing a favor as insurance).

"Would it be ok if I accept the request now and carry it out in a day or two? I have some important business to take care of..."

"Oh, well that would be fine too really, I forgot that you foreigners always seem to wander off for some time."

Happy that he was able to log off without having to worry he accepted the Quest right away and bid Narkas farewell.

"Good luck to you boy and inform me when you know who else was involved or what the house Stimridge was after."

"Sure enough, until then."

Waving one last time he left the incredibly luxurious mansion and returned back to his lover Saracesse with new determination in his stride.
