First Encounter

When I awoke, I wasn’t logged out as I had expected to be. I tried sending a message to the support team to no avail. Hopefully this is just some sort of bug to do with the tutorial being separate from the rest of the game. Although it is a bit worrisome nobody in my family has even tried to come and get me yet. Did they just forget about me while I was playing the game? Might as well at least finish the tutorial in an attempt to logout.

Before heading out to the mine it’d be best to equip myself with some equipment for the job.

“Excuse me, Cassius?”

“Aye, watcha be needin’? Oh it’s just ye again.”

“I was hoping to buy some equipment for the job since I’m a bit low on equipment for the moment.”

“Fine, what do ye be needin’?”

“I could use a sword, some armor, and a pickaxe.”

“Aye, ye really are low on equipment.”

Cassius then looked me up and down as if evaluating me.

“How much ye be willin’ to spend?”

“For now, I only have 8 silver to spend.”

“8 silver hmm. I’ll see what I have for ye, give me a bit.”

After a few moments Cassius came out of the backroom carrying a set of equipment.

“For yer weapon I suggest going with a iron sword and shield. Lookin’ at ye, you probably want to use a buckler. They be lighter and easier to use. Yer armor, I suggest hardened leather or kobold leather. Kobold leather is a wee bit pricier, but ye won’t regret the choice.”

“Hmm, what makes kobold leather better than hardened leather?”

“It be a tad tougher, but it also be lighter. Yer movement will be restricted even less by it.”

I thought he might be insulting me by bringing out all this light equipment. Though it makes sense since I declared I would be a magic swordsman. I wouldn’t want heavy equipment to weigh me down and interfere with the mixture of spellcasting and swordsmanship.

“What is the price of all this equipment?”

“This iron sword here will be 1 silver and 50 copper, the buckler is 1 silver, the leather armor is 3 silver, and the kobold armor is 5 silver.”

“I’ll take what you suggest with the Kobold armor. I shouldn’t be sparing expenses when it comes to increasing my fighting capabilities now should I?”

“Aye, cuttin’ corners will get ye killed.”

After buying the armor I proceeded to exit the town through the north gate. Leaving the town was fairly simple, all I had to do was show them my guild card and they easily let me exit the city. It seems to be a universal identification system. It must be some part of the lore for the world.

As I wandered along the path towards the mine, the landscape soon turned from plains to a large forest filled with tall trees. Almost resembling pine trees but much taller. The view was quite realistic, and the smell of the pine trees was quite vivid as well. I usually spend most of my time indoors, so the fact I’m experiencing these sights and sounds of nature is quite interesting.

Brustling is coming from the nearby bushes. Could be some sort of enemy. This must be the first battle of the tutorial! I should ready my stance to get ready for it.

“Blaaagh”

A disgusting voice came out of a small goblin holding a wooden club and wearing only a loincloth.

“Man you think they’d cover you up, or at least the smell coming from you. Just because the game seems realistic doesn’t mean they had to make the creatures so disgusting or their smells so bad…”

Unfortunately, the goblin didn’t give me much time to prepare myself and was already charging at me. He swung his club down at me, but luckily I was able to bring my arm up to block it in time.

“Gah! What is this? Why does a goblin hurt so much? More importantly why does this game hurt so much?”

I quickly took out my sword and shield and struck back at him. He was able to easily dodge it and hit me in my side. Again a blunt pain impacted my back. I don’t understand why this game hurts so much. Turning around I’m able to block the next attack with my buckler. The club gets deflected shifting it’s trajectory towards the side. Kicking out, I hit the goblin in the stomach forcing him backwards. He stumbles but quickly brings his club back up. Charging in I slash clumsily at him and barely land a scratch on his bicep but stumble from putting too much force into it.

The goblin quickly swings his club at me as I roll to the side to avoid it. Rushing back to my feet I slash at him again. He raises his club to block my slash and it is knocked to the ground. Fear began to form in the goblins eyes.

If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

“Heh, not so tough without your club are you?”

He picked up a small stone nearby and threw it. It hit me in the head causing me to fall the the ground. The last thing I saw was blood dripping into my eyes, and a goblin laughing over my body.

When I came too, I was lying on a bed in a room.

“Sigh… You’re really weak for a user aren’t you?”

The guildmaster, Gilroy, was standing next to my bed with a disappointed look on his face.

“And you even came from camelot? I thought all of you were supposed to be strong there?”

“To be honest, I don’t remember anything before waking up in the town square. Everyone just assumed I came from Camelot, so it seemed convenient to go with at the time.”

“You were taken out by a single goblin… Most F rank adventurer’s have issues with them since they usually travel in groups of 3 or more. Though I heard you only lost to one.”

“Yeah… I really didn’t know what to do I don’t quite remember much…”

It seems like he doesn’t know users are new the the game. It could be that he remembers the beta testers and thinks we should all be caught up with them.

“I see. I think it would be best you go through adventurer training. You’ll be assigned to a group and go with them on a mission. They’ll be higher rank so you won’t be in any danger, but they’ll help you and watch you as you try to learn how to be an adventurer.”

“...Thank you.”

“We’ll wave the fee for failing since this was your first request, but future requests you’ll have to pay the fee.”

“Thanks, again. Oh, by the way who saved me from the goblin? I remember waking up being carried on someone's back after I blacked out, but that’s it.”

“Oh, it was another user. I didn’t catch his name he left not too long after coming to Jultem.”

“There was another user here!? He even helped me out… I wonder who it was.”

“I’m sure you’ll meet again one day, for now rest up. Tomorrow you’ll join your group.”

“What happened to my wounds? I was sure I had suffered injuries from the goblin.”

“The healer employed with the guild tended to your wounds. Normally this would cost you, but this time it’s on us. Next time don’t lose to a goblin so easily.”

A woman dressed in what looked to be a religious habit. The main color was white, but there were hints of red and gold trim and crosses.

“Hello, I’m Maria. Don’t worry I’ll make sure your wounds are healed.”

“T-Thank you.”

She was quite beautiful for a nun. Though she couldn’t be more than 15 or 16 years old. I wonder why such a young girl is working as a nun? She began to pray and soon a yellow light started to cover my body.

* Healing Ability I obtained.

Quickly I took out my guild card and began to examine it. What is this? A healing ability? Don’t tell me I’m going to become a healer now because the first ability I’ve seen is a healing ability? All this because I couldn’t defeat a simple goblin. Wait, don’t tell me…

...Phew. I was afraid I would have gotten the healer class. Looks like I will still be able to choose later, probably at the end of the tutorial. Speaking of which is this supposed to be part of the tutorial? Are they giving me the opportunity to choose from a variety of classes? And who was the other user that saved me? I wish he would have stuck around to give me some more information, especially if he was around during the beta. It sure would have helped a lot.

“Sorry, you’re mostly healed now, but I don’t have enough mana yet to continue to heal you. You’ll have to finish healing from rest.”

“O-Oh. D-don’t worry about it. I’m sure I’ll be fine, thanks for what you’ve done so far.”

She seems so kind. Even though she’s done this for nothing, she’s still apologizing to me that she can’t completely heal me. What kind of rough work is the guildmaster putting her through?

“You should get some rest yourself if you’ve used all your mana. You’ll need to make sure you have enough if someone more important than me comes in.”

“It will be fine, my shift ended a while ago already.”

She gave me a beaming smile causing me to blush a bit.

“In that case, thank you for staying later to heal me. It helped a lot.”

“It’s not a problem, I just can’t stand to turn away someone who needs help. Well I better get going, it’s getting late.”

She proceeded to walk out the door only to turn around and say one last thing.

“Try not to get hurt again, but if you do I’ll be around to heal you.”

What a nice girl. I wouldn’t mind being treated by her again. Though I don’t think I want to be injured like last time. It might even be worse if it’s something stronger than a goblin… I can even imagine the pain. Why did they make the feelings so accurate in this game? Well I guess I better get some rest. Hopefully I’ll be logged out this time...
