What kind of class is pupil? Could it be some sort of starting class that everyone gets? That would make sense based on the stats. I hope everyone doesn’t have the same cookie-cutter class and skills. From what I’ve read online about the wide array of possibilities from the class system, I expected something a little more.

“Um… Can I see your card to complete the registration?”

As I handed her the card, a blank look came across her face.

“...I-it says you’re class is Pupil. The orb hasn’t ever given incorrect information before, but... this must be a mistake. If you’re the age of 16, you should already have advanced from pupil and gained a class.”

“If I may ask, what exactly is the pupil class?”

“...Pupil is a class gained by those at the age of 10, from then until their 15th birthday, they train and earn a variety of skills. On their 15th birthday, they can either visit a temple, or pray to Mimir to receive their true class. It’s unheard of to go past your 15th birthday and not have received a new class. Maybe the guildmaster will have more information about this.”

When we arrived at the guildmaster’s room, Nadia knocked twice on the door.

“Come in.”

“Excuse me.”

As we entered the room Gilroy was sitting at a desk doing paperwork.

“You’re the guildmaster?”

“What? Do I not look like a guildmaster to you?”

“Well… No? I thought you were an adventurer.”

“I used to be. Though I can still hold my own so don’t you worry about that. Anyways, why did you bring him here Nia.”

“Nadia… sigh. There seems to be a bit of an issue guildmaster. Garoth here… well, it seems he never obtained a class after becoming a pupil.”

“Well that shouldn’t be a problem, he’ll just have to wait to join until he’s old enough. And you tried to tell me you were 26, wahaha.”

“Well guildmaster, you see. He’s actually 16 already, he’s past the age of receiving his class.”

“WHAT!? Are you telling me he didn’t receive a class when he came of age?”

“Yes, that seems to be the case. Do you have any idea what he can do?”

The guildmaster pondered on the issue for a while, pacing the room. A confused and anxious look was plastered across his face. When I think about it, the NPCs here seem pretty lifelike. This game must be pretty advanced but… The way he’s thinking so hard about this, did I somehow obtain an unexpected class? Is there some sort of glitch?

“For now, go ahead and have him start guild activities. Hopefully as he does work for the guild he’ll gain a class based on the skills he has.”

“Well, that may be a problem. He only has the learning skill all pupils start with.”

“YOU! I thought you were some magic swordsman. Yet you don’t even have a class, or even any skills! Ugh. Give him some miscellaneous jobs, don’t let him take any subjugation or escort missions. How can someone as incompetent as you be a user?”

It seems I’ve made a mistake by proclaiming I’m a magic swordsman. I hope this doesn’t somehow affect my standing with the guild. With any luck however I can quickly obtain a class and rise in guild ranks.

“Yes guildmaster. Okay come with me Garoth.”

“Okay.”

When I first entered the guild it was rather empty, but now as it’s later in the day adventurer’s must have returned to turn in requests. This game really puts an emphasis on realism. It looks like my future prospects will still be good. Over there, there’s a woman wearing robes wielding a large staff. And there, a man wearing plate armor with a large two-handed sword slung across his back. There’s even someone with what looks to be an elemental fox hopping around him. It seems like there might be a decent variety of classes after all.

“I’ll help you pick out your first job since you’re new here. There’s a few you might be able to handle. You can pick any one of these three.”

The first one that caught my eye was a request to mine crude iron from a nearby mine. Perhaps mining would help me raise my strength or even obtain a mining skill. While I don’t plan on being a craftsman it could help me to get materials I need to get better weapons and armor in the future. The other requests are just to gather herbs, and help an old lady find her cat. I don’t see how those would help me at all.

“Okay I’ll take this one.”

“You’ll have two days to complete this request. If you have any you can talk to the owner at Forgotten Furnace Smithy. You can deliver directly to him, or report to the guild and let us handle delivering the goods, however there will be a 5% cut in the reward to do so.”

Well that seems like an odd name for a blacksmith’s shop, but why does it sound so familiar?

...Now I remember why it sounds familiar.

“Oi. If it isn’t Mr. Camelot. What are ye here for? Some equipment for some big request?”

“N-not exactly haha… I’m actually here to do your request to mine crude iron.”

“Why would ye, want to do a request like that? Yer a user right? Souldn’t ye be doin’ better work than minin’?”

“W-well you see, I actually wanted to learn about materials myself. I figured if I learned about materials I would be able to better gather them for new equipment to be forged for myself.”

“Hoh? That’s quite the interestin’ idea ye got there. I like where yer head's at. Alright, there’s a small mine about 20 minutes walk to the north-east of here. It’s not a big mine, and the ore you can find there ain’t great. But. It’s one of the only mines near here. The ore ain’t the best but this ol’ dwarf can refine it to be good as the best quality iron out there. Here’s a minin’ pass to get you into the mine. Now, all ye got to do is fill up this bag with ore from there. Though ye best be waitin’ for tomorr’w, it’ll be too dark to head there soon.”

Well I guess I should logout and take a break now. Hmm… that’s odd. I can’t find a way to logout. Now that I think about it, I can only use my inventory, where is the rest of the interface? Maybe I have to logout at an inn? The lack of interface could be for immersion. I wonder if the skills are all action or thought based? Well I guess I’ll head to an inn.

Arriving at White Horse Inn, I asked the guild master how much rent for a room would cost.

“Rent will cost you 2 silver coins per night. An extra silver coin will provide you with a meal and hot water.”

Hrmm.. I don’t need to eat a meal, but it would be neat to experience eating in virtual reality for the first time.

“I’ll take the meal as well.”

If inn’s cost this much, silver must be fairly easy to get, especially with this starter mission, perhaps I’ll get far more than 10 silver to get some equipment.

The smell of pepper and pork filled the air. In front of me was a large bowl of stew. It seems to be some sort of pork stew, perhaps with a bit too much black pepper. The bread seems a bit tough, but when I dip it in the stew it softens up quite a bit. !!! What is this? It tastes like I’m eating it in real life. The flavor is quite good too, it tasks like pork, but almost a bit gamier. It’s quite tender however, and the flavor matches well with the pepper. I wonder if all food in this game tastes as good as this?

A bed, table, and nightstand. Not the most furnished room, but at least the quality seems alright. There’s a candle on the table for one to read or do work as well. The bed seems quite comfy. Though it doesn’t compare to modern day mattresses, it’s not uncomfortable. There might be ways to relax in the game. Alright, let’s logout. Maybe I have to lie down and act like I’m sleeping to logout? As my eyes grew heavy slowly I drifted to sleep. When I awoke and my eyes opened it wasn’t what I expected.
