In an event he would forever consider a cosmic tragedy of the grandest order, August Langley tripped and died.
It was a casual thing, little more than an unfortunate series of circumstances hardly worth mentioning were it not for their combined significance.
He’d been late waking up that morning, so he’d missed the bus. Because he’d been in such a rush to get moving, he hadn’t stopped to check the weather, and was oblivious to the torrential downpour of near-freezing rain pelting the dorm until he’d stepped right out into it. As missing one more day of class with the most vindictive professor on campus was very likely to ruin his life, he’d made the foolish decision to suffer through said torrential downpour instead of turning back for an umbrella or calling a cab; after all, near-freezing wasn’t freezing, right?
And because he’d decided to forgo his umbrella and run through the streets with nothing to shield his eyes from the rain, it was rather difficult to spot the man sleeping at the wheel until he'd swerved his truck onto the sidewalk straight at August. It was only by the kindness of a stranger August managed to keep his life; a pair of rough hands had pulled him just out of harm’s way in the nick of time.
Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.
But the strangest part of it all was what they’d said afterward—
Survive, son of man. Prove them wrong.
Then the man gave August a pat on the shoulder and left as quickly as he’d appeared, vanishing into the morning fog without so much as a goodbye. Reeling from his near-death experience and still extremely late for class, August didn’t have the mental capacity to contemplate the odd encounter. His brain categorized it as a weird LARP thing, and he went on his merry way.
Of course, August knew well fate had a way of correcting itself in such situations—there was a series of movies about it and everything--so while certainly upsetting, tripping on the stone stairs leading up to the main building on campus and falling straight into a conveniently misplaced cart of various sharpened gardening implements wasn’t entirely unexpected.
Thus August’s brief journey through life on Earth came to an end.
